Airport Extreme DNS lookups stalling; creating page load delays

As of the last few days, maybe a week, I've noticed my Airport Extreme (the most recent version, tall squarish one) has been getting slow at random times. Nothing on the network locally would be causing it. The slowness appears to be in DNS lookups... you know, that bit the browser does behind the scenes to turn google.com into 173.194.37.4. At first I thought it was just a slow DNS server setup we had configured in the Airport (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but I've switched them to something that performs a bit better (if you can call 12 ms vs 14 ms lookups, "better", lol).
The issue manifests itself over wired and wireless computers connected to the Airport.
We also have a airport express (the short squarish one, newest model) that is setup for the purposes of creating a roaming network. Another thought was maybe it flipped over to try to issue IPs, so I looked to ensure it was on the proper settings, and it is.
The software on the airport management client (in windows) and the airport extreme + express are updated. I have already tried to reset them from scratch and reconfigure, to no avail.
Interestingly, what leads me to believe it's related to DNS Lookups is, when I am experiencing the issue, if I download a file - say a really large file, just to test, the download speed is as it should be from my ISP. But if you try to browse to any ole page, apple.com, google.com, arstechnica.com, or sites that are generally really quick, like msn.com or wsj.com, it would be faster to tap it out in stone.
We're experiencing this on a interesting set of devices, Windows 7 and 8 computers, an iPad, a Android tablet, android phone, iPhone, and a Windows phone.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've found a few older threads with similar issues, but they are outdated and/or seem to chalk it up to a bug and Apple needs to fix via update. This is just super frustrating.

Hi tbonecopper,
If you feel you are having DNS-related slowness on your Airport Extreme, you may find the following article helpful (it is written with a computer focus, but the same principles should also apply at the router):
Non-responsive DNS server or invalid DNS configuration can cause long delay before webpages load

I have a 1st generation AirPort Extreme and want to create a guest network, can I?
This version of the AirPort Extreme does not have guest network capability.
Can I do this by adding an Airport Express?
Why not simply buy a new Airport Express.....which does have main and guest network capability*.....and sell the AirPort Extreme?
    * The AirPort Express will need to connect to a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway type of device.....for the guest network feature to work correctly.

  • Page loading delay

Is there a way to go in to Safari and set the page loading delay to a shorter time ?

Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions.
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:

  • HH3 Airport Extreme DNS / router address issues

I have a HH3 hard wired (ethernet) from HH port 1 to the small circle port on the Airport Extreme.  The AE extends the network around the house via Airport express and we have done this by creating a new network so we can connect either to the HH or to the AEBS network.  The AEBS is set to bridge mode but wrong DNS and router addresses are given out by both HH and AEBS when the AE is turned on (192.1.68.1.2 instead of 192.168.1.254).  We can bypass the issue by setting these manually but would prefer not to have to.  If I turn the AE off, the HH issues the correct DNS and router addresses.  I am asking the same question on the Apple forums but not everyone there is familiar with the HH.

Bizarrely, having tried every configuration on the AE, reminded of something vofsanity said to me in a previous thread, I unplugged a powerline extender and the problem seems to have fixed itself!

  • When I reopen my computer (macbook pro) it connects to my dsl connection and not to my airport extreme network that I created

I purchased yesterday an airport extreme, everything works fine, but the thing is that when I close my laptop (just shutting down the screen) and then reopen it, instead of conecting to the airport extreme network I created, it connects to my DSL connection. Is this normal? Do I have to keep entering my own airport extreme network after I close/shut down my computer? Thank you very much

Hi Bob, I solved it, it had to do with the preferred networks. But thanks anyways!

  • Safari 5.1 Stalls on Page loads

This is the worst version of Safari EVER.  I'm switching to Chrome for now. I have reset my Safari, turned off extensions, deleted plists, done a Safe Boot, but it keeps stalling on page open.  It works for about 2 hours on a fresh reboot, but then chokes like crazy. Frustrating, annoying, IMPOSSIBLE.
I'm on 10.6.8 and Safari Version 5.1 (6534.50).  The program doesn't stall itself, because the menus are accessible, it just can't load web pages..
Apple is starting to suffer from the Microsoft problem of bloat beta releases.... Not going to upgrade to Lion either for the foreseeable future...

i'm having difficulty, as well with about 95% of my sites. i attempted the url you suggested earlier and it loaded quickly.
my solution is hitting the 'reload' button and it works 95% of the time.
however, this is a fine temporary fix, but i have to say that it's quite frustrating. i'm thinking this started happening a couple of weeks ago. couldn't tell you why.

  • Safari's initial page load delay... where to turn off or change?

    Hi,
A while back I read that Safari puts a few seconds delay when loading a new webpage, .. and 4.03 still has it. I just can't find where it was that I read how to take it off.. Does any one know?
Basically I want Safari to start drawing the page as soon as it gets to it, kind of like opera does.
Just in case Why don't I just use opera? I prefer Safari, but I don't always need the initial page that is loading but a link on it... and I find myself waiting.. and on fast connection, just to load a page I shouldn't have to be waiting until the browser feels the page load is complete.
    Thanks
    Oscar

    HI,
There's no delay feature that you are referring to in Safari. If you can find the article you read, could you please post it here?
Have you tried emptying the cache?
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Empty Cache
    Also, try using Open DNS

  • Intermittent page loading delay

Sometimes I will open up a site and the blue bar in the address bar will stay 1/4 or so of the way loaded. It will eventually go and load the page (10 seconds or so). If I notice it before it loads and hit the refresh button, it loads instantly.
It doesnt happen all the time, but it does happen on multiple websites.
Is this something that can be reset, or does it sound like Safari is opperating normally.
    John

I notice this a lot. It seems to coincide with falkag servers (have a look at the activity window) or some other ad-providing server. These servers must get overloaded. Sometimes it is page elements which have a js (javascript) suffix. I think these 'hangs' are well documented in other posts on this board.
However I have noticed that it happens more on my iBook with an Airport connection than with my iMac which is plugged directly to the AEBS Ethernet port.
This 'hanging' is the most frustrating part of the browsing experience. I am not sure whether it is an Airport, an OSX or a Safari (webkit) based problem or just a general network slowness related to advertising.
It may just be coincidental, but when Safari 'hangs' on a page, and I open the Activity window to see what is causing the hang, the connection speeds up - as if opening the window unstopped a blockage. I can't see this as being a 'solution' - it must be a coincidence that I have opened the window at the same time as the page download 'unhangs' (if you see what I mean). Anyway, try that yourself (open the Activity window) and report back. I would be interested in your experience.

  • Airport Extreme created an unsecured, third, network

My Airport Extreme is set to create two secured networks, one is 802.11G, the other is N. My iPad and iPods can see the two networks. However, my Macs see a third network that has a 12 character, random name. This network is not secured. When I connect to this network, Airport Utility gets full access to the Airport Extreme.
I also have 5 Airport Expresses on this network. When I connect to this third network, none of the airport expresses are visible in airport utility. Of course, when I connect to the G or N network, airport utility sees the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses.
So, what is this third network?

Here's the report system profiler: The two "chipotlenet" networks are mine and so are the "you are b watch" networks, which are the guest networks. I'm now connected to the mysterious third network which gives me access to my Airport Extreme, and the Internet but not to the Airport Expresses that are hanging off of chipotlenet.

  • Craigslist extremely slow with Airport Extreme

Odd problem - Got an airport extreme last week. Each of the hundreds of web sites I visit on a daily basis loads fine, except craigslist, which is extremely slow to load every page and every image etc. I can browse craigslist easily on the same laptop in other locations. How can I fix?

Thanks. If the problem occurs on every Mac or other device using that base station, there really is not anything else worth checking. It could be a DNS problem associated with your ISP, or it could be a corrupted parameter in the base station. To fix the latter would require a "hard reset" followed by configuring it again:
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
If the slow page loads still occur, you might temporarily try a public DNS such as OpenDNS, which will bypass the DNS your ISP uses. You can try that before or after resetting the base station.

  • Windows PCs extremely slow in Airport extreme networks

We have a large deployment of Aiport extreme mesh network. Since the beginning we been experiencing issues with all PCs. Usually my macbook pro will do a speedtest and give 30-35mb/s on it while the PCs will only do 2-3 and its intermitent. They are always reporting connectivity drops too. Also access to a NAS is extemely slow from the PCs. Anyone have any clue as to how to fix this. I assume its a windows issue but after doing lots or research everyone reports it but no one has been able to fix it. Any clues as to what could be the culprit. All PCs are 2011 or late 2010 Lenovo with windows 7
    Thanks for any help

  • How to share files over Airport Extreme?

I have a G4 iMac connected to the Internet via an Airport Extreme. I also have an eMac in another room which can access the internet over the same Airport Extreme.
I have created a video file on the eMac but I need to burn it to DVD which means I need to get it to the iMac.
I know I should be able to send it over the network but each Mac can't seem to see the other, if you get my meaning. I have tried to switch on File Sharing and such like but I wonder if I am doing something wrong. Should there be an icon on the iMac desktop representing the eMac or something and vice versa? If that should be the case, I haven't got this.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to get File Sharing set up between my two Macs, I would be most grateful.
PS The eMac can access the internet just fine and use the iMac's Printer if it needs to.

Try these suggestions (copied from another discussion) which cover two alternative ways for getting file sharing between two Macs to work:
The first step is: on each computer, go into System Preferences, then Sharing, and turn on "Personal File Sharing". On that page, you'll see, at the top, the computer's name (which you can change), and at the bottom, the IP number (eg 10.0.1.2), which you may need as an alternative.
Then, on each computer, go to Finder, then click on Network. You may straightaway see the other computer appear - you can click on it, click "Connect", and then either log in as a user (it has to be a user that's been set up on that machine), or a guest.
As a guest, you can access all Public folders on the computer.
As a user, you can access that user's Home folder
As an admin user, you can access the whole hard drive.
So, if you have different user accounts set up on the computers, it's best to use Guest access and then put the files you're sharing in your user's Public folder.
Now, if that computer doesn't immediately appear, go to the Finder, click cmd-K (to open the Connect to Server dialogue), and type in
    afp://ip-address-of-other-computer
    eg afp://10.0.1.2
You'll then get the same login dialogue as above.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.
