Airport Extreme doesn't see my USB disk

Hello,
i have changed the usb disk (full) that i connected to my airport extreme. I replace it by a new one (MEM UP, 2 To), formatted in mac os extended.
This new disk is mounted by the Mac but when i connected it on the Airport, the Airport doesn't see it : "no disk detected".
There isn't hub, it is connected directly.
Have you got an idea ?
Thanks,
Rudy

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered....and your new hard drive may require a bit more current than the old one.
It is always a good idea to use a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme whenever you are using a hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
A powered USB hub may not solve your issue, but there is also a chance that it will. Might be worth a try.

  • My Airport Extreme Can't See My USB Disk

Hi. I have a new airport extreme out of the box, factory fresh. I plugged in my USB hard drive and cannot see it displayed in the Airport Utility under Disks. I have tried different hard drives, different cables, rebooted the airport, restored it to default settings but still no joy.
The first disk I tried was a factory fresh Buffalo formatted to NTFS. Then I tried my USB disk that was the Time Machine backup on my old Mac that I had connected via a USB cable. Neither can be seen.
    At my wits end....
    Thanks for any help

The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32 to be recognized at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is underpowered. For that reason, it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive......even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
If the drive is formatted correctly, and you have a powered USB hub, and the drive will still not appear in AirPort Utility, then it is time to take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store or service to have the USB port checked out.

  • Airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't see cable modem

A new Airport Extreme refuses to see an Optimum Online cable modem. As for troubleshooting, I've seen the new AE working at an Apple authorized store, bought a brand new ethernet cable, but still only get a blinking yellow light. I can plug my G5 directly into the modem with no problems. Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem once. Turned out Verizon (the ISP) had their DHCP server bind to the MAC address of the first machine connected to it and wouldn't issue a new IP address to another machine (MAC) address, unless you either:
    1) let it time out like 45 mins!
    2) you spoofed the MAC address of the old device on the new device. (Can't do this on the AEBS, unfortunately.)
    3) you connected the old machine and (rather than just disconnect it after it got an address from the DHCP server), you actively released the DHCP address.
Until I found out this vital DHCP server behavior info (after waiting an hour on hold with tech support and then working through level 1 support's noob scripts), I too was playing around with resetting the modem, etc., etc. The problem however was the ISP's DHCP server 'security'.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't see ethernet ADSL router

I'm having a problem trying to connect my new Airport Extreme base station to a one port ethernet conexant adsl router. It simply doesn't see that the router exists.
The way I have it setup at the moment is the router distributes an IP address to the airport and the airport distrubutes IP addresses to wireless devices. At least that's what's supposed to happen.
I have an Airport Express connected to the router and that works fine. Connects no problem on its default settings. The Airport Extreme however doesn't connect with its default settings.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Is it possible the Airport Extreme just doesn't work? I've connected the Airport Extreme to my laptop via the WAN port to set it up and that worked Ok so as far as I can tell the WAN port works fine as does connecting wirelessly. The two just don't talk to each other.

    Try the following ...
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the ADSL modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the ADSL modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the ADSL modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the ADSL modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)

  • Airport Extreme doesn't see wireless router

I set up a wireless router for my G5 iMac and have turned airport on. the default SSID is belkin54g which my PC laptop sees and connects to just fine. The strange thing is, on the iMac, it showed up in the list of available networks. At first I got all bars, then it quickly dropped to one and then it completely dropped connection with the router when it was sitting on the same desk. If I create a computer to computer network I get all bars filled but it doesn't connect to the internet. Seems like I'm missing a setting on the iMac since the PC has no trouble. The model is a Belkin 54g 4 port wireless router.
BTW: This is on 10.4.2 and the latest airport update.
    Any help would be great!!!

To My knowledge, The airport utility only sees Apple airports. So seeing your 2wire via that app I do not believe works. The program I like is iStumbler. I see all kinds of things in my neighborhood.
Anyway, I claim Chipset conflict. Back what may be the security down. OR turn it off and work your way up to find what level is needed. After no security, try not broadcasting SSID, after that tweak it until you don't see it and then back off to the one that works. Every one says wireless is wireless. Even in my work place, we cannot get PC's and Mac at the same level on of security on the same access points.
Bottom line, start fresh, tweak till it works. Because at the apple store, the chipsets are the same, or meant to work well. Why you may ask.... They want you to buy and Apple extreme with all the features.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't recognize USB Drive

I have a USB external drive that is working fine when attached to my iMac but my airport extreme doesn't see it at all. I have tried resetting the power to both devices.
    AEBS version 7.2.1
Does the drive have to be formated a certain way for it to work? Right now it is "Mac OS Extended" I have also had it formatted as OS Extended (Journaled). Neither are working.

  • Airport extreme doesn´t recognize usb hard disk

After one year of no problems using it, suddenly, the airport utility doesn´t find my usb hard disk connected to an Airport Extreme base station. There is a firmware upgrade to 7.7.1 for this same but unfrequent and rare issue (Apple´s words), though it is only forseen for the new base stations AirPort Extreme 802.11ac and mine is 802.11n.
Has anyone experienced this problem, any solution?
    Thanks in advance.

I just called Apple Care and I'm astonished by the answers that the operator gave me :
    - he couldn't confirm if Airport Extreme could handle 4 TB disk drive or not. More : he said he cannot obtain this information.
    - he advised me to plug on my Aiport Extreme a 4 TB drive borrowed to a friend, or buy a new 4 TB drive in a shop with a 4 days refund policy (to return the drive after the test).
I was very unsatisfied by these answers, arguing to my operator that for me HE is Apple and I expected him to have informations about the specs of Apple products. In the end he advised me to go in a Genius bar with my hard disk. So I asked him a ticket number to give to the Genius bar. He said there was not.
I'm very frustrated by the very low level of information of this call :
    - Apple Care didn't confirmed an information that looks correct according to newsgroups or a technical support reseller,
    - Apple Care couldn't confirmed the problem was handled by a developpement team at Apple, neither when it could be published.
Another point about Apple Care : when I called Apple Care Yesterday, they said they couldn't handle my request because I haven't the serial number of the Airport Extreme. I said I wanted to confirm the incompatibility for ALL the Airport Extreme, but they argued they must give me a correct answer for my case, especially. Today, after giving the serial number, they said they couldn't answer.
The Apple technical specification of Airport Extreme don't show any limitation in the size of the drive :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP628?viewlocale=en_US
The MacWay reseller technical support confirmed me that no Aiport station they sell are supporting today 4 TB drives.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't recognize USB disk

I have a USB external hard drive that I've used for a number of years plugged directly into my Mac mini.  I'm trying to move it to the Airport Extreme as a shared hard drive, but the device is not recognizing it.  It won't show up in my Finder sidebar, nor will it appear in Airport Utility in the list of disks.
For contrast, I've got another drive that shows up fine whenever I plug it in.
    Things I've tried:
    - A USB hub plugged into the Airport Extreme.  If I plug both disks into the hub, the second one works just fine, while the first still won't appear in the Finder, and in Airport Utility it is displayed as a "0MB" capacity drive with no volumes.  If I don't plug in the second disk, I don't think the first disk shows up at all.
    - Different USB cable.  Same result.
    - Reformat the drive (via Disk Utility, as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)").  Same result.
    - Rollback the firmware.  Currently at 7.6.  I tried 7.5.2 and 7.4.1.  Same result.
    Any ideas?

Some older drives just won't work at a network USB location....probably a firmware limitation on the drive electronics.
Check to see if the firmware on the hard drive can be updated.
If you have checked your powered USB hub to verify that all ports are functional, and checked USB cables, I think you have to conclude that you....like me in the past....have found a drive just won't work where you want it to.

  • Airport Utility doesn't see functioning Airport Extreme Base Station

I have an Extreme (n) Base Station which serves as a WDS main with one relay Express and one remote Express. All three are functioning properly. Now I want to add a second remote Express paired with the main Extreme. However, Airport Utility doesn't see the Extreme, even when hardwired. So I have no way to add in the Apple ID of the new remote.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Is it necessary to restore default settings on the Extreme and reconfigure EVERYTHING?
    Thanks.

Not yet. Hoping there is some other approach, since if I reset it and then it loses the connection before configuration is complete, I lose the functions that are working now.

  • Airport Extreme AC (5th Gen) and USB Hard Drives

I just got a new iMac.
Previously I had three external hard drives chained together directly via firewire 800 on a Mac Mnin. In the old configuration, Time Machine backed up to one of HDs pretty quickly. Since the new iMac doesn't have firewire - I took those same hard drives - using their USB 2 connections and put them on a hub connected to Airport Extreme. I see them under shared drives and access is great - but the back up speed is not very fast. Is there a better way to connect these drives for the purposes of Time Machine backups? They are formated Mac OS exteneded, etc
    Thanks.

The confusing part to me was that the new Extreme has a USB2.0 spec?
    It is easier and cheaper.
USB3 spec causes 2.4ghz wireless issues.
    See http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2423604,00.asp
In a wireless router.. that aint good.. and some manufacturers have had issues.. Asus for example. Their USB3 are useless in several of the routers because they did not shield well enough.
Internally the AC version AE is same chipset as the Asus.. they could have used USB3 which is built in.. but I think went conservative and decided not to as they were faced with early release of hardware they didn't understand. And so they are still having issues with the basic hardware.. imagine throwing in USB3 wireless issues.
All of the above is total and utter speculation on my part. Apple are the most secretive company in the world.. they don't even own up to mistakes.. they never tell you what they are doing or why. No apple rep will say I am right or wrong.. total PR blackout.
But IMHO that is why you should have bought a Time Capsule which has a SATA interface inside.. and is very much faster than USB2. The cost increase is only what the hard disk costs.
No doubt gen7 or gen8 will suddenly come out with USB3. It always pays to keep some features up your sleeve even if the chipset manufacturer has them built in.

  • AirDisk - cannot see the USB disk in Finder

    Dear all,
I just brought the Airport Extreme Base Station with the purpose to use an external HD shared with all my Macs
The AEBS works quite well, but I’m not able to see the USB disk in the Finder…
In the airport utility I can easily see that AEBS recognize the USB disk, and that that disk is connected, and I’m sure that that disk works well and that is formatted as Mac OS Extended
Even after checking the huge problem affecting this firmware release (mine is 7.2.1) and following all of the suggestion posted by the community (connect, disconnect, restart, pray for an update) I cannot even see the disk in Finder…
I’ve heard of people that cannot mount or access or disconnect… but I cannot really see the disk itself…
    Any suggestion?
Thank you very much in advance

    Hi!
I got mine working now! As the problem started to seem like an authentication issue (disk was in "connecting" mode for eternity) I started to think that the problem might be actually in MacBook Pro/Leopard end of the system rather than in the Airport Extreme or AirDisk. I tried then to create a new account and "account preferences" application got all stuck - was not possible even to force quit. I then forced the MacBook to shut down with the power button and rebooted. A miracle happened! Now I can see the folders of the AirDisk and can copy there. Next I will test whether I also have the same problem that backup with Leopard to AirDisk is extremely (read prohibitive) slow.
I hope this simple trick helps others as well
I am keenly waiting for the next Leopard update... have to say that being used to great Apple user experience this has been a major disappointment. It seems that Apple is leaving us alone with our problems. They should facilitate somehow these forums and pull together FAQ's as suggested by many.

  • Wifi signal from Airport Extreme doesn't reach all areas of my house.  Is there a way to extend it without sacrificing bandwidth?  Airport Extreme version 7.6.1

The wifi signal from my Airport Extreme doesn't reach all areas of my house.  Is there a way to extend it without sacrificing bandwidth?  I have an Airport Extreme running version 7.6.1.

You will need to add another device like an AirPort Extreme to provide additional wireless coverage in the house.
The only way to preserve bandwidth on a network would be to connect the two AirPort Extremes using an Ethernet cable connection.
While you can "extend" using wireless only, typically half of the bandwidth on the network is sacrificed when you do this.
