Airport extreme dropping PPPoE

I have had my DSL router set to bridge and my airport extreme set to PPPoE connection for several years. Suddenly this week, the airport extreme started dropping the PPPoE connection. It will re-connect within a minute, but it happens several times a day. I'm lucky to stay connected for > 10 minutes without a drop.
I checked the DSL line and it was fine. If I have airport utility open during an episode, it shows that the internet is connected but the PPPoE is not.
Any ideas? I'm not enthused about changing my router settings from bridging.
Thanks!
Melinda

I have just started having the same issue (on BT VDSL2 in the UK). Not as frequently as Melinda but a couple of times a day i'd say.
VDSL modem is staying up but the Airport Extreme is dropping the PPPoE connection out. Here's an example log:

  • Apple Airport Extreme drops PPPoE connection on BT...

Hi folks; looking some advice here:
I'm fairly Apple centric in the house, and have an Apple Extreme Base Station (Dual Band) i.e. the current gen one.
BT Infinity became available in my area in December and I jumped on it, especially when after viewing posts on these forums which said the AE worked as the router in PPPoE mode. After engineer installation I put on the AE and configured as forum advice. Started working no problems. Happy days.... But after 48 hours or so the connection to the Internet dropped and I restarted the VDSL modem (I thought that was the issue at the time). Since then, every 48 hours or so the internet connection will stop. Its not a problem with the connection to the router, I've tried it wired and wireless, basically the internet connection stops working. I'm assuming its the AE as if I put the HomeHub back on I get stable connections with no issues for days on end. Other weird thing is that if I check my external IP address, it will change from 86.x.x.x to 109.x.x.x on the AE regularly throughout the day while on the HH its stays at one or the other for days on end. So I think the AE is dropping the connection and trying to get an address from BT but its failing and thats causing a problem. When its rebooted, Internet is back on as soon as its back up. AE shows no problems in its logs and LED doesn't indicate any issues. I've went from 7.5.1 firmware to 7.5.2 but problem still exists.
Does anyone else have this issue and if so how did you resolve it (if you did). Is my AE flaky? It worked without any problems when I was on ADSL and it was in bridge mode. Any advice appreciated.

I'm not familiar with Apple products but as your IP address keeps changing then, as you believe, it certainly points to the AE resynching all the time. Can you get any stats from it that might help? I'm sure you won't get stats from the BT VDSL modem, it just does not seem to be possible, unfortunately. But who knows, whatever stats you can get might just let one of the experts on this forum give you some idea what is wrong.  Failing this (or in addition) you might check if you have begun to get exessive noise on your phone line.
I understand that if you dial 17070 and use option 2 you will be able to listen to any line noise that might be present. If there is a lot of noise then this could explain the regular re-synching. BTW this line noise test is best done from the master socket with a standard non-digital phone.

  • Airport Extreme dropping out and can't connect PC anymore

    Hello
Suddenly, a couple of weeks ago, my internet connection dropped in the middle of surfing. I couldn't reconnect, Airport was only seeing the base station spasmodically and when I did try to connect I was being asked for a password which wasn't recognised. Hours later I called the support line and was advised to do a hard reset which I did, new name, same password. Now I'm reconnected most of the time, but it has dropped out a few times and the signal seems generally weaker. Something's not right.
I had not at that point done the July 1st update so it's not to do with that. I haven't a clue why it suddenly started playing up so strangely. (Though I have noticed a new unsecured wireless network in range and wondered if someone was 'hacking')
My main problem is that my business partner, who connects through a pc here (who remained connected incidentally when I first lost the connection) and continued to be able to connect until I did the hard reset. Now I can't connect that pc to the airport extreme. It sees it but gives an error message saying it's out of range and refresh the list when I try to connect. I fiddled about for hours. I've forgotten how the pc was set up in the first place and I'm going nuts. Can anyone help.
    Thanks
    Helen

Disappointed not to see any help on this one.
If it helps anyone out there to help me, I just uploaded the Airport Utility Software to the pc, typed in base station ID and password. Error message, check network connections. No help.
Try to connect the pc again the usual way from the list of available networks, it asks for password, I use it, then it says it needs to be 5 or 10 ASCII characters or 20 hexadecimal.
What I don't understand is that everything was working fine on both machines until two weeks ago when my base station went into spasm, dropped me but happy with pc, when I did the hard reset, keeps me, won't allow pc to connect.
I just don't know what to do now. Of course I suppose I could always make a call and pay £35 to have an apple technician tell me why their hardware suddenly screwed up for no apparent reason.
    Seriously frustrated
    Anyone?

  • Airport Extreme drops connection for a few seconds at a time

My airport extreme seems to drop its connection for about 5 seconds at a time and then is back up.  It does it every 10-15 minutes or so.  I am not really sure why it is doing this because it has just started happening recently and worked fine for months and months.  I need help because I dont know much about networking.

When you inserted your AirPort Extreme (It was an AirPort Extreme card, right?) card in your G5, did you attach the antenna cable AND the external "T" antenna?

  • Linksys WRT54GL and Airport Extreme dropping connections

In looking through these forums, I realize that people have had problems with their Linksys WRT54G routers and their Airport cards. There seem to be a lot of suggested fixes, but no definitive answer as to what's wrong. I don't know either, and after changing channels, changing Linksys firmware, changing encryption, creating background pings, and all of the recommended solutions, the problem persists. I wanted to document it here in the hopes that someone can figure out what's wrong. Here's a tail of /var/log/system.log during a period when the Mac was having trouble connecting to the Linksys. I don't believe that this is due to Wifi interference or the Linksys, since other machines in the house (a Mac running 10.4.8, but using a Cisco card), for example, don't have these same problems at this time.
Basically, this kind of behavior repeats for a half-hour or so, then settles down for "a while," where a while could be an hour or could be 6 hours, and then it repeats. I have no idea what the problem is, and I suspect it's a problem with the Airport Extreme, rather than with the Linksys. Ideas?

What I am saying is that I have wireless connections to the Ae and I have wired connections to it as well. Both are getting dhcp from the Ae. Both are getting dropped. In the log I am getting these entries, about once per hour...

The 10.0.97.190 is the recently-added OS X Server. Not sure what the port is. But it seems to be doing something untoward.

  • Airport Extreme Dropping Connections

Hi, I have an AEBS, connected to a comcast "Teralyn" cable modem. I have a PowerMac Quad Core, connected to the AEBS by an ethernet cord, and we have an IBM ThinkPad and a PB15 G4 that we connect to the AEBS wirelessly.
Up until a day or so ago, everything worked great. But starting yesterday the connection to the AEBS and to the Internet from the Cable Modem drop intermittently. Seemingly no rhyme or predictability.
When I disconnect the AEBS from the cable modem, there is stability in the network. When I reset the AEBS and restart the cable modem, the problem persists. Random disconnects.
    Im running the following setup:
    - V5.7 on the AEBS
    - OSX 10.4.4
    - Airport Firmware V404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
Any help is greatly appreciated. Any ideas... I've tried a bunch and am ready to throw my AEBS out the window.
    Thanks.

Hello, I'm having kind of the same problem.
I have an airport extreme set up to connect to an adsl modem. There are 1 IMac, 3 PC running XP SP1/2. Everything works fine (Good signal strength, excellent speed, etc.) except for one pc (xp sp1 all updates with USR5416).
It randomly disconnects from the base station without apparent reason. Often, it reconnects within the 5 following secondes.
The annoying thing is when the connection application in my task bar starts flashing : connected/disconnected/connected/disconnected... it can last from 10 seconds to several minutes while it's impossible to do anything networked.
    Any idea?
The airport extreme is updated to the latest firmware, so is my USR wireless card, windows xp, etc...

  • AirPort Extreme with PPPoE Static WAN IP Address

I am going to be installing an AirPort Extreme in a business that has PPPoE DSL and they have a static WAN IP address and I have a few questions.
    1) Going through the AirPort Utility when I change the Connect Using (under Internet tab) to PPPoE I am not given the option to fill in my static IP supplied by ATT.  Am I missing something here or is it impossible to have a static public IP and PPPoE on an AirPort Extreme?
    2) If the above is possible can I have my modem do PPPoE but leave DHCP and NAT to the AirPort Extreme?  From what I have seen DSL modems / routers allow you to do bridge mode (PPPOE, DHCP, NAT is all done in seperate router) or you can have DSL modem do PPPoE but then DSL modem also has to do DHCP and NAT.  Again am I missing someting here?

Sorry, but if the Netgear modem is configured in pure bridge mode....which would mean that the AirPort Extreme must provide the PPPoE credentials.....you are still stuck since the AirPort will not support a static IP for a PPPoE connection.
Otherwise, you will likely need to configure the modem to provide DHCP and NAT....which would mean that AirPort Extreme would need to be configured in Bridge Mode to operate correctly.
If you wanted to risk a Double NAT situation on the network, you could set up the AirPort Extreme to Connect Using a static IP address and act as a router also providing DHCP and NAT services. I am not recommending that you do this, only mentioning that you can try if you want.
Devices on the "main" network will of course not be able to "see" devices on the AirPort Extreme network.
This may....or may not... even work. No way to know unless you try.

  • Airport Extreme dropping Windows 8

I run a small business from home and have a current version Airport Extreme (bought one month ago) and have two Windows 8 PCs which repeatedly drop the WiFi signal at intervals during the day, while the WiFi signal continues to work for the other devices (MacBook Air, iMac, iPad and two iPhones). When dropped, the Windows 8 PCs identify the Airport Extreme, but with a yellow triangle containing an exclamation mark and the word "limited" displayed above the WiFi icon.
The PCs will sometimes reconnect after rebooting, or sometimes when the WiFi connection is disconnected and then reconnected. However, it's really annoying, as it can occur during a WebEx or teleconference, and the signal just drops.
This is driving the PC users crazy, while the Apple users remain rather smug, thus annoying the PC users even more.
Please can someone help? I had expected the Airport Extreme to be the best on the market and provide reliable connections to all users, PCs and Apple.

I appear to have solved the problem. I did install the firmware update for Airport Extreme (7.7.2), and did Configure my Airport Base Station with an iMac. At the same time I explored the Windows 8 Support community and reconfigured the power saving setting (turning power saving off) in the WiFi adaptor properties for both Windows 8 machines.
Either one of these solutions seems to have fixed the problem, as it has not recurred since (three days ago).
    Thanks for everyone's suggestions!

  • Airport extreme drop out Testra

Hi - I'm new to this. My iMac G5(intel core duo) uses an airport extreme to access the internet. No probs until I want to make a phone call out whilst on the net - after a short while the airport symbol fades & the internet connections drops out. This only happens on outgoing phone calls, not incoming. Any ideas/help will be very much appreciated. The only other computer joined to this network is a Mac Pro intel core duo.

gulchy, Welcome to the discussion area!
    My iMac G5(intel core duo)...
There is no such thing. You either have an iMac G5 OR an iMac Intel Core Duo.
Are you using a cordless phone? Does it operate at 2.4 GHz? It is causing wireless interference with the wireless network created by the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The best solution is to replace the phone with one that does NOT operate at 2.4 GHz. If you can't do that, try changing the channel used by the AEBS until you find a channel that works or you run out of channels.

  • Airport Extreme and PPPoA

I have just got an Airport Extreme base station and am unable to connect to the internet with it. My connection to the internet uses PPPoA but the base station only has PPPoE as an option. I know this may be a dumb question but does this mean I cannot use the Airport Extreme? Can anyone help me resolve this issue?

Duane is correct the Airport Extreme does not support PPPoA.
You will need to get an ADSL Ethernet Modem which does support PPPoA.
Something like ADSLNation's X-Modem M3 http://www.adslnation.com/products/xmodem-m3.php It is also now available from the UK Apple store and retail stores.
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore?productLearnMore=TJ151

  • Airport Extreme dropping Internet Despite Strong Signal - Mavericks?

Hi - I've searched in the threads several times but haven't yet been able to find a resolution for this.
The past week or so, my Wifi keeps going out at random intervals. I can restart my router and it will come back up, but eventually it will drop again. Thought it was my internet service OR my router, but everything works super fast and steady if I'm connected directly. I really think it's the connection to my 2 year old Airport Extreme that is causing issues.
The wifi drops (all sites get stuck and say "Resolving Host" before getting a no connection error), but the Airport Extreme light stays green and my WIFI signal shows on my devices with full strength even though it's not working. Again - no problems if I'm connected directly to the internet.
I thought it was a similar problem to this thread, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2508959?start=120&tstart=0, however I followed those steps (enable IPv6) and the issue is still occuring. My Airport Extreme is running v 7.6.4.
I upgraded about a week ago to Maveicks and wondered if that might have something to do with it? Or if anyone has any other ideas? Any help at all is appreciated - it's been maddening rebooting my modem multiple times a day.

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
Make sure the guest wireless is off.
Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
You should see lists of wireless connection like..
Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

  • Airport Extreme drops wireless and resets itself about 20 times a day

    hi all,
i am having wireless network issues with my Airport Extreme.
I have a secured (WPA) network set up at work using the Apple Airport Extreme. We have about 7 - 10 users on it at one time during business hours. What has been happening is our Airport resets itself and drops everyone off. This happens quite frequently but with no real pattern, sometimes it drops 5 times an hour, sometimes it goes for hours without dropping anyone.
Now this issue is not a new one for us, nor is it isolated to the Airport Extreme. Actually i have had D-Link and linksys WAP's do the exact same thing in my office.
Our offices are relatively small and its open concept (no walls between the users and the airport) however the building we are in has loads of wireless networks fighting for space. I can see over a dozen other wireless networks from my computer at any time.
Im at my wits end with this because it seems like any wireless access point we try ends up failing in the same way. They never totally pooch out, they just always shut themselves down and restart.
Couple more details about the networks
Mostly PC's but a few macs.
The Airport is set to use interferance robustness as well as auto-channel switching.
we have also added a airport express to this network to help boost signal strength.
As i said we have anywhere from 6 - 10 people on this network at one time, none of us doing any significant activity (just browsing and emails). But when im here alone it never drops me. it seems to relate to the # of users.
Anyone have any ideas? Im totally lost and at the point where im going to scrap wireless and just wire everyone to the network!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE,
    MCM

    some more info.
    1. I upgraded my firmware to 7.1.1 from 7.0 and still drops connections.
    2. However upgrading my Airport Utility software allowed me to actually see logs after the thing restarts. This is what im getting when computers lose connections:

i read some other forum posts (macfixit.com) that pointed to an article about this, but of course you gotta pay for it and i have limited faith in the solution. So anyone know what it means when it Rotates the TKIP group key?
could this be a security issue and not interfeaance ?
    or both?
    thanks,

  • Airport extreme drops out on imac, but not on powerbook....

    Hi
    Here's what i have running.
A 4 year old powerbook which always connects just fine to the internet, with no dropping of the signal.
A new imac with a airport extreme built in. It regularly just drops the internet connection, even though the internet is seen perfectly by the other machine.
Router is a standard netgear router virgin media provide.
Periodically, and some days it will be totally fine, but mostly on the weekends (like now) the signal on the imac just drops out (from perfect 4 bars, to none) and i lose access to the internet on this machine (very annoying when you are trying to talk to someone on skype!). after some time it reappears, only to drop out again.
I have reset the modem to automatically select a wireless channel, but that seems to have done nothing. So following the advise on other chats here, i set the channel to 10. However the problem remains. I thought, well, maybe its the wireless phone, or the microwave, but these do not seem to affect the internet connection to the powerbook g4. The software updater for the "airport utility" claims it is up to date.
And now i am totally lost as to what to do! Any suggestions? Thanks

I have this very same issue. Reproducable on 2 laptops (ibook and powerbook), both 10.4.3, to 2 separate ftp servers.
    Transmit fails as well.
Fetch, however, seems to work just fine. Does Fetch not use the underlying ftp command line app?
Transferring small files (under 1k) seems to work though.
The message I get is as follows:
421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
Timesout for 10-20 seconds, then I get the message. Setting the transfer mode to "binary" manually seems to correct the issue. But this won't work for what I'm doing (Dreamweaver, which must use the command line ftp?).
Attempting to ftp the same files from my local Solaris and Linux servers seems to work just fine.
    sftp works.
    Apple? Is ftp broken?

  • Airport Extreme dropping connection with a Cisco 5 port Giga switch

I've connected a Cisco 5 port Giga switch SG100D-05 to one of the LAN ports of the Airport Extreme and for some reason the connection is being dropped or it fails to connect. Any idea of why this is happening and how can it be fixed?

If you have not already done so, you might want to do some basic troubleshooting to try to isolate the cause of the issue.
To do that, temporarily disconnect the switch and power it off. Connect a computer with an Ethernet port on it to the LAN port on AirPort Extreme and turn off the wireless on the computer.
Test to see you can get a good Internet connection this way.
If you can, then you know that the LAN port on the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly and your troubleshooting efforts will need to focus on testing each port on the Cisco switch.
If you cannot get a good connection with the computer connected directly to the AirPort Extreme, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working to eliminate the possibility of a bad Ethernet cable, which is the culprit more often than you might think.
Please post back on the results of your testing.
