Airport Extreme DSL internet connection

I have an SBC Yahoo DSl connection via DSL modem and an Airport Extreme. My iMac is my main computer and I would like to connect it directly to the internet via ethernet cable without having to rely on the airport, since its' signal has been less than reliable. I would still like to use the airport however so that we can connect our laptops wirelessly to the internet. Can I connect the airport to the DSL modem and then plug the iMac directly into the Ethernet/LAN port on the base station and be connected (not actually using the wireless signal). I've tried but it doesn't seem to work (Always says "Could not find a PPPoE server." But I can connect wirelessly. I just get sick of the signal dropping out periodically and would like to avoid the wireless connection to the internet on my iMac, but still allow our laptops to connect wirelessly. Any hints as to what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks.

It sounds like you might be loosing your connection to interference.

The only way I can think of to do what you want to do is an A-B switch
You would run an ethernet cable from your computer to the switch and then you would have the A port to the WAN port and the B side to the LAN side
thus A would be wireless and B would be hard wired.
I am not sure how good it would work.
I have SBC as well and I don't suffer any of the drops you speak of.

  • Make AirPort Extreme share internet connection with Time Capsule

    Hello,
This is the situation: in one room there's an old Mac, the modem which delivers the internet and the AirPort Extreme which is connected to the modem.
In another room there's the Mac Pro, the Time Capsule which is connected to the Mac Pro with an ethernet cable and to a printer via USB.
I want the AirPort Extreme to wirelessly share it's internet connection with the Time Capsule so that the Time Capsule can share the printer with all three Macs (old Mac, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro), the Mac Pro can use the Time Capsule for Time Machine functionality and maybe the Macbook Pro too.
And just using the Time Capsule for internet.
    How can I do this?
At the moment the AirPort Extreme is disconnected and the Time Capsule is used instead, but this way I can't share the printer...
    Thanks!

Is that AirPort Extreme "flat" or dome-shaped?  If it's flat (802.11n-capable), you should be able to configure the "main" router to "Allow this network to be extended" and the other to "Join a wireless network".  If the Extreme is dome-shaped, then you need a more-complicated "WDS" arrangement.  In either case it shouldn't matter much which router plays which role.
I'm not sure what you mean by "And just using the Time Capsule for internet."

Is the printer connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule?  Can you see the printer in the "Printer" panel of AirPort Utility?  What happens when you try to use it from one of the Macs?

  • Why does 2 Airport Expresses connects to one another instead of connecting to the primary Airport Extreme For internet Connectivity ?

I have Netgear DG834G router only for dsl connectivity wifi connectivity to that router is off. i have connected netgear that provides adsl connectivity to the  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) Airport Extreme dual band Wireless N 5th generation via cat 5 cable so airport extreme is the main wifi device through which i get wifi signals at my home. now our house is big and i have installed the adsl netgear modem and airport extreme router at the same place in my room in the upper story but the signals are weak even in the upper story at the other end of the house so i have installed the new airport express dual band wireless N in the upper story (Kafeel's airport express) and it is connected to the primary airport extreme  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) wireless router in range extention mode it repeats the same ssid. Our ground floor has another airport express dual band wireless N the new one ( Lounge's airport express) signal was weak there so i installed another airport express (Lounge's Airport Express) their and configured it to extend the range of primary router airport extreme  (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) in the upperstory with the same ssid. Now the problem i am facing that sometimes lounge's airport express connects to kafeel's airport express instead of connecting to the airport extreme and the signals in lounge are weak because all the devices are connected to kafeels airport express and does not connect to lounge air port express. but when lounge airport express is connected to primary router airport extreme then everything works fine devices connect to lounge airport express and signals are full. i have took pictures of the problem i am facing you will understand better by having a look at it. In normal working setup both the airport expresses are connected to airport extreme which is shown in this picture
The second picture shows when lounge airport express is connected to kafeels airport express and not the airport extreme (Shakeel's Airport Extreme) this is the problem.
isnt there a way to correct this so that they dont connect with each other and connect to the airport extreme ?

Lounge's AirPort Express must be located signficantly closer to Shakeel's AirPort Extreme than it is to Kafeel's AirPort Express, and there must be fewer obstructions in the signal path than the other possible connection.
The reason is that if you want Lounge's AirPort Express to connect to Shakeel's AirPort Extreme, it must receive a significantly stronger wireless signal from Shakeel's AirPort Extreme than it does from Kafeel's AirPort Express.

  • Airport extreme loses internet connection all the time with imac and macbook pro

I keep losing the internet connection with airport extreme on my imac and macbook pro but NOT with my pc

Ok, so when you say you lose internet connection, is it disconnecting from your wireless network so there are no bars?
And are there usually full bars?

  • Airport Extreme Losing Internet Connection (Only)

I have been trying to troubleshoot a random internet connectivity problem for over a month now.  I feel like I've eliminated almost every possible cause, but still no fix has been found.  Here is my configuration:
Time Warner Cable is my cable provider
    Hardware is a
    Fifth generation Airport Extreme
Motorola SB6141 Surfboard Cable Modem (bought last September- white version)
iMac- 27" intel wired ethernet connection
    Apple TV wired ethernet connection
    (2) Windows 8 HP computers
    iPad
    (4) iPhones
The internet connection, when it is connected, is rock solid and fast.  No problems at all.  The problem is very randomly, and I mean with no discernible pattern, the internet connection will drop.  When it drops I cannot connect to the internet at all.  The connection will come back on its own in a matter of seconds, sometimes minutes.  The connection will come up and down very quickly at times.  Other times, it's just up for hours (or days) without a problem.  It never goes down for hours or days, even though I might have it coming up and down for an hour or so before it will kind of stabilize.
When the connection is down, there is no indication on any of the hardware that there is a problem. The light on the Airport Extreme is solid green.  The lights on the modem are all normal. The Wifi network is still there and any device can connect to the network, they just cannot access the internet. The problem happens to both ethernet connected devices and wifi devices.
Time Warner has checked the signals from their location on numerous occasions.  I've been on the telephone with Apple support.  They had me completely reset the Airport Extreme to factory settings.  I have replaced the Airport Extreme with another that Apple sent under warranty. The problem always seems to go away, but then comes right back. After replacing the Airport Extreme, I had Time Warner come out and check the equipment at the house.  They found the coaxial cable connection was questionable, so they replaced the coax connector on the end that goes into the modem. Ran great for about a week. Then, the problem came back.
I have called Arris (Motorola) support.  They had me reset the modem to factory settings.  That seemed to work for a couple of days. Then, the problem came back.  I called Motorola support back.  Now they want me to run the modem directly connected to my computer, which I am doing now.  The problem with that is the problem is so intermittent, it could run for a couple of days and seem to be fixed and not really have been fixed.
After talking with Time Warner yesterday evening I went out and bought a new ethernet cable to connect the Airport Extreme and the modem.  Everything ran fine for several hours.  Then, the problem came back.
When I spoke with Time Warner (and Arris support) all signal strengths looked virtually perfect- upstream and downstream.  While on the line with Time Warner, they assured me my modem hadn't disconnected from the network in days even though I had been having the problem.
I am completely at a loss.  The modem ran rock solid for about 6 months before this started happening.  I don't think I rebooted it a single gime during the period.  Before I had a Linksys that I had to reboot regularly.
    Please HELP me.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Something like iStumbler, http://www.istumbler.net/ , will display other visible wireless networks, so that may provide a few clues, but cordless phones, security systems, etc., will not be displayed. You need professional scanning equipment for things like that.
Unfortunately, it really comes down to a guessing game, because the routers on other wireless networks around you are likely automatically changing their channels as well, looking for clear airspace....as does your Apple router when it is set on the "Automatic" mode.
If you always have a problem when you take the Mac outside, that's probably an indication that the interference source is producing a constant signal, like a wireless camera/security system at the neighbors, or it may be nearby wireless network.
If the problem is intermittent in nature, then it may likely be the result of cordless phone conversations that are active at the time.

  • Airport Extreme Slowing Internet Connection

Hope someone can provide some direction for me!
A few weeks ago I started noticing slowed internet speeds, but thought nothing of it, and attributed the slow down to peak periods. About a week ago was the first time I ran a speed test due to a noticeable depreciation in connection speed. Then, and still today, I’m averaging about 3.4 mbps down / 6 mbps up both wireless and wired with Ethernet cable through the airport extreme. I have Comcast Blast which, until the slowdown, was averaging 20 mbps down / 6 mbps up.
    My setup:
    Macbook (mid-2010), OS X 10.7
    Mac mini (early-2009), OS X 10.7
    Motorola SB5100 Modem
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (3rd Generation)
Here’s the kicker: when my macbook is directly connected tothe modem (removing the airport extreme), I get amazingly fast internet (26mbps down / 6 mbps up).
I’ve been browsing around here looking for solutions since my warranty’s expired and have tried the following:
    thanks to this previous discussion
-Changed Frequency Channel to less populated channels
    -Changed Fireware Versions (was 7.5.2, tried 7.4.2, 7.4.1,and 7.4)
    -Moved the router’s location
    -Moved the
    -Reset the modem
    -Reset the Airport Extreme
    -Factory reset the Airport Extreme
-Made sure “Ethernet WAN Port” was set to “Automatic(Default)”
    -Changed/Temporarily Removed Security
Some users have found success (as discussed in the discussion linked above) by swapping out their cable modem. I own mine, so it would be a matter of purchasing a new one (though I'd rather not buy a new one if it's actually my Airport that's failing)
Could my Airport Extreme be dying and it’s time for a new one?
Any suggestions or thoughts of things to try?
    Thanks, Everybody!

Well, I'll see if you can explain this one:
As suggested, I used Airport Utility to switch the Radio Mode from "Automatic" to "802.11a/n - 802b/g." I was unable to find the option to select "802.11n (5) only - 802.11n only (2.4)."
I ran the test again with the following results:
         Client Side: [  4]  0.0-60.0 sec  497408 KBytes  67909 Kbits/sec
         Server Side: 0.0-59.7 sec  497408 KBytes  68253 Kbits/sec
    No Change.
I then discovered that under "Wireless Network Options..." my checked "5GHz Network" had become unchecked. I re-checked this box and connected both server and client computers to this new network and re-ran the test:
         Client: [  4]  0.0-60.1 sec  392192 KBytes  53496 Kbits/sec
         Server: 0.0-60.1 sec 392192 KBytes  53476 Kbits/sec
    Seemingly slower.
HOWEVER, now when I run an internet speed test, I'm consistently getting ~28mbps down/~6mbps up across all devices (mac mini, macbook).  I'm sort of unclear as to what's causing this change, but it appears, at least for the time being, that the issue has resolved.
Should I be concerned that the AEBSn is not transfering data near the 300 Mbps on the 5GHz channel? What else could be playing into this issue?

  • Airport Extreme drops internet connection several times a day

I have an AE that is about 3 years old and it has worked great until the last two weeks or so. Over the last few weeks it will be working fine and then drop my connection for no reason. I will get an amber light on the AE although the cable modem stays connected. It is as if the AE is rebooting itself about a dozen times a day for no reason. I was looking around a bit and I see several things in the log at the same time that say:
    Jul 10 10:09:47 Severity:5 Connection accepted from fe80::21c:b3ff:fe71:762f%bridge0:49424.
but I am not sure what (if anything) that means. I have a Mac, Win & PC, XBox, PS3, Two IPhones, and an IPad connected to it if any of that matters. I also make sure the AE is sitting out in the open with plenty of airflow to stay cool.
What do I need to do to make the connection more stable? Is there a way of reloading the firmware on the AE to see if that will help?
    Thank you for any help.

ElksSS01, I have the EXACT same problem with my Airport Extreme but, I am 100% certain it is my service provider... The problems started for me back in March of this year, I've replaced my cable modem 3 times, Bought a new Belkin Router (didn't work either), had technicians come out to my house 4 times and FINALLY they found that they are reading voltage on the COAX line into my house, they traced it all the way back to their junction box in my neighbor hood so I asked my neighbors if they were having similar issues with the same service provider, which they were... So now I am back to using my Airport Extreme again, but using the Logs to keep track of how many times the connection drops...
When your internet goes down, try observing the cable modem, there should be a CABLE LED indicator, if it is not on SOLID while your connection fails then it is more than likely your service provider... Below is exactly what happens to mine...
    1) no connectivity from any device, wired or wireless
    2) cable light on modem turns completely off
    3) cable light begins to blink
    4) cable modem reestablishes a connection to the internet
    5) AE light goes from solid green to blinking orange for 2-3 seconds
    6) AE light goes back to solid green and all is well, for about 45 minutes in my case
I would definitely do what Bob Timmons sad above as I also thought it was my router and jumped the gun to buy a new one, only to find out it wasn't my router after all... Before you replace your AE though, I would check with your service provider... In my case, whenever I called them they said that my modem and everything looked fine on their end... In the event their is voltage getting fed back into your modem via the COAX, the only way they will be able to tell is by checking the lines, and tracking it back to where ever the faulty equipment is located...
Here is what I am dealing with, this crap gets VERY annoying... (removed ISP address for obvious reasons) and this isn't my entire log, actually it isn't even a quarter of it... Every day, I drop a connection at least 20 times... The log I keep is NOTHING but what you see below...

  • My airport extreme will not connect to the Internet

My airport extreme will not connect to my toshiba router. I connected it to my office internet this morning but when I hooked it up at home it simply will not connect. I have tried resetting all the settings and have had no luck. It did work once upon a time. I currently have my airport express hooked up so I know there is connectivity.

I could never figure it out after trying everything I could and going to the genius bar I ended up just purchasing another extreme.  The really funny thing is that I can set up a network between the two and it works fine.  I am using it at work now with out any problems so I guess there is really no loss :-?

  • Wired connection to cable modem.  Airport extreme has to connect to internet if computer goes to screen saver.  Any way around this?

Describe the issue in more detail.. as it doesn't currently make sense.. the AE should always be connected to the internet. It should never disconnect.. but the computer can fail to connect to wireless after sleep.. that is common problem.
See Tesserax docos if you have wireless connect issues after sleep.

  • Internet connection is through airport extreme is not connected

internet connection through airport extreme is not connected maybe there is a problem setting it up

Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected
to the AE (which is also a router if I understand
correctly) could cause connection problems ?
    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

  • Airport extreme no internet, though light is green

    Hi,
My Airport Extreme won't connect to the internet anymore. It's light is green (no blinking or anything). It worked for years, but now it doensn't anymore.
My modem is working fine. I checked that, by directly connecting my iMac (by an ethernet cable) to the modem, and then there is a working connection to internet. So I concluded the Airport Extreme must be the problem. I even replaced the Airport Extreme by an (El-Cheapo) other wireless router, which worked like a charm. So the problem is indeed the Airport Extreme.
This is what I tried (many times and in various ways/order):
    1. Rebooting the modem
    2. Rebooting the Airport Extreme
    3. Factury reset of Airport Extreme and setting it up from scratch
    4. Disconnect all Ethernet cables to the Airport Extreme, except for the WANand mto my iMac
    5. Disable Wireless modes
    6. Downgrade firmware (and after this do not resolve the issue), upgrade to the latest firmware again
but none of it resolved the problem..
    Suggestions what to try next??
    Alte.

Finally I solved the problem myself by a full power cycle of the modem and the Airport Extreme, as described on
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3412
Only when following exactly the steps (in the order) as is described, I was able to get an internet connection (again). Before, whenever I lost connection, I just rebooted both the modem + Aripiort Extreme (i.e. unplug-wait-plug the power), and I would be reconnected. So still, now, I feel AirPort Extreme is starting to fail... Let's see for how long it will be running now...
    Thx for the help/reply anyway!!

  • Airport Extreme won't connect with my cable modem (Time Warner)

OK, I'm tired of staring at a blinking amber light. I'm reaching out to anyone out there who's had this problem. I've got everything connected right, the software loaded, the connections set on my laptop (Macbok Pro). But still my Airport Extreme won't connect to the Internet. I've tried different cables, rebooting both my modem and my Airport. For the record, I've had a Mac IT guy from my advertising agency come by my house and make sure that everything's installed and hooked up right. But it still keeps saying that my IP address is invalid, even though I can connect (wired) using the modem.
I suspect I'll just have to take it to the Genius Bar or something. But anybody got any ideas? I really want to join the 'n' generation....

atotheb, Welcome to the discussion area!
Did you power off the cable modem when switching the Ethernet connection from laptop to AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? This is usually required.

  • Have 2 airport extreme base stations connected in chain.  Airport utility shows slave unit without power. However, power is on slave unit, but status lights do not show up at all. Small green lights at each back port blink.  Anyone have any ideas?

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks restoring and restarting didn't fix my problem - i have started it fresh and still it doesn't work. Basically I press ONCE on the remote, after the machine has not had any commands for 10 minutes, and the cursor skips from one end of the menu to the other - so I can't choose network or update software etc - I sometimes manage to stop it randomly in the middle of the menu if I press on a command in the middle of the cursor skipping all the menu steps...not sure what the problem is but I have basically not used my brand new apple tv since I bought it for that reason! I should call Apple support I suppose! grrrr hate wasting time with stuff like this!
    Thanks for your help though!

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.

    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
