Airport Extreme emitting flickering sound when Airplaying...is this normal?

Hi all...I just got my ATV2 over the weekend...and am really excited over it. It was really an experience airplaying. Yesterday, I realised while my ATV2 is airplaying, my Airport Extreme (which is the connecting modem) emits a flickering sound...like a time bomb. it stops when I stop airplaying. It was loud, cos I had both devices in my bedroom. Extreme is just beside my bed. I checked, and its definitely coming from my Extreme, and dependable on Airplay. My thought was it was running the wifi connection at an usually fast rate than usual (It stops immediately when I turned off my wifi on my iPhone4 which I sent my songs over from). Is the flickering sound normal?

If the Extreme is under warranty I think I'd enquire with Apple direct as even if it's working ok now, it may be the sign of another problem, and if nothing else that ticking noise will be annoying/distracting for you.
Just make sure it is the extreme not the audio from AppleTV 2 when streaming to it - if you have interference on a wi-fi connection you can get choppy sound from Airport devices including AppleTV.
Also you might want to post in the Airport discussion area in case anyone has experienced similar issues:

Good luck.

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

want to buy airport extreme, am using mountain lion.  Will this work ?  also,  my house is 5,500 square feet all on one floor.  Do I need an extender and which one?

...  If I purchase an express to extend is it hard to configure as an extender?
No, AirPort Utility prompts you with step-by-step questions and makes configuration simple.
The Express and Extreme have the same transmitter power specifications, so I suggest the $99 Express as an extender, should you need one. Beware that you cannot add a second Express to wirelessly extend the network any further - as the following excerpt from Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations explains:
    Extended network range considerations
In the above example the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ is out of wireless range of the extended Wi-Fi base station ➋, therefore the extended Wi-Fi base station cannot join or extend the wireless network. The extended Wi-Fi base station must be moved to a location that is within Wi-Fi range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
    Important Note
If another extended Wi-Fi base station ➋ is placed between the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ and the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌, the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌ will not allow clients to join it. All extended Wi-Fi base stations must be in direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
A "roaming network" that Bob described, in which all base stations are connected with an Ethernet cable, is by far the best alternative.

Whatever I have done to the 5S phone or something within it, I cannot get it to emit a noise when people call in.
I have read recent blogs but to no avail - theproblem still exists.
    What to do?

In the control panel is the moon black or white it should be black On side of iphone is the mute button set to red? Go to sounds and pick another ring tone are the volume button tuned up If it still will not work Try a Reset press power button & menu button hold both down together Until you see the Apple Logo you will not lose any data. • Airport Extreme: PEAP authentication failure when NAT is enabled

Setup: Airport Extreme firmware 5.6, Windows Admin Utility 5.2
Airport's WAN port connected to an internal network with Windows 2003 IAS RADIUS server; Airport's LAN port disconnected.
Windows XP client (using Microsoft zero-configuration client)
client and server set up to use PEAP authentication
If I set up the Airport in bridge mode (uncheck the "Distribute IP Addresses" box in the Network setup tab), the client can authenticate correctly and can obtain an IP address from a DHCP server on my internal network.
If I check the "Distribute IP Addresses" box, select "Share a single address with DHCP & NAT" and the 192.168.1.1/24 address range, the client can no longer authenticate. I haven't changed anything else on either the Airport or the RADIUS server.
Network traces taken on the wired (WAN) and wireless side of the Airport show that the first few exchanges of the EAP handshake go through fine, but the server's reply to the client's "TLS Hello" message are being blocked by the Airport. Up to that point, I don't see any significant difference between the exchanges with NAT enabled or disabled; it's just that the Airport passes the server's message to the client correctly when NAT is off and blocks it when NAT is on.

  • Airport Extreme Intermittent Network Interruption when Downloading Large Amounts of Data.

I've had an Airport Extreme Base Station for about 2.5 years and have had no problems until the last 6 months.  I have my iMac and a PC directly connected through ethernet and another PC connected wirelessly.  I occasionally need to download very large data files that max out my download connection speed at about 2.5Mbs.  During these downloads, my entire network loses connection to the internet intermittently for between 2 and 8 seconds with a separation between connection losses at around 20-30 seconds each.  This includes the hard wired machines.  I've tested a download with a direct connection to my cable modem without incident.  The base station is causing the problem.  I've attempted to reset the Base Station with good results after reset, but then the problem simply returns after a while.  I've updated the firmware to latest version with no change.
Can anyone help me with the cause of the connection loss and a method of preventing it?  THIS IS NOT A WIRELESS PROBLEM.  I believe it has to do with the massive amount of data being handled.  Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, did some more sniffing around and found this thread.

It seems that the AEBS has had a serious flaw for the last 6 years that Apple has been unable to address adequately.  Here is a portion of the log file.  It simply repeats the same log entries over and over.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

  • I enabled the guest network feature on my time capsule.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use this as a network extender using a "roaming" network?

I enabled the guest network feature on my TC.  Can I configure my airport extremes guest network feature if I use the extreme as a network extender connecting my Airport Extreme to my TC via ethernet cable?

Unfortunately no, since the AirPort Extreme should be configured in Bridge Mode if it is connecting to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
The Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the AirPort is configured in Bridge Mode.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network cannot be "extended" either by using an Ethernet connection or wireless. It is only available from the Time Capsule "main" wireless router on your network, not any extending devices.

  • I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes does this occur with the new extreme?

I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes. Does this occur with the newer version?

    1)  If the reception comes and goes as a result of wireless interference from other sources in your home and around the home...other wireless networks in the neighborhood....or...nearby cordless phones.....then a new router is likely to experience the same issues. See this Apple support document for symptoms and fixes of wireless interference.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
    2) If the reception comes and goes as a result of an aging power supply in the older AirPort Exteme or another component that is intermittently acting up, then a new router should take care of that.
What we cannot tell you is whether 1) or 2) applies to your situation.  If possible, it would be good idea to take the older AirPort to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

  • Airport Extreme and DYNDNS problem - TESSERAX PLEASE READ THIS

    Good evening to all.
I've a problem with the configuration of an airport base station with dynamic DNS.
I followed the advice of TESSERAX here, but without success: airport does not connect to DynDNS and does not update the IP address.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
Days ago I was able to run DYNDNS but with completely different parameters, as described here (scroll to the middle, at the chapter: "Setup Your Dynamic Global Hostname in the AirPort or Time Capsule") :
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/#setup-apple-airpor t
Unfortunately, after making some changes in the airport configuration (which is abolutely not related to the DYNDNS), this has stopped updating the IP. I've tried to restore the configuration, reflash ecc but without success.
    This is my configuration:
    - PC Windows XP-SP3 running AirPort Utility 5.5.3 (FWIW there is an annoying bug that prevents you from writing the dot "." in the hostname field, the only solution is to use the copy-paste).
    - AirPort Extreme with 7.6 firmware ( 7.6.1 also available but I've read that isn't much better)
I also own an AirPort Express 2nd gen with 7.6.2 firmware, I've tried to use this in the place of airport extreme but idem, no success.
So, please please please HELP ME. Thanks everyone, Damiano

Hello Tesserax, happy to read you.
Yes, I referred to the part #2 of your guide but I've also read many of your other posts about it. In fact, let me thank you for your willingness, it's people like you that make the web a better place.
I also spent a good part of the night reading all the other threads on DynDNS but without success.
As for my DynDNS account, this is obviously a free account. The host name is like "<pc-name>.dyndns.org" as the user name using my email address (with or without domain "@ gmail.com" works anyway).
Click here to see a screenshot: http://i33.servimg.com/u/f33/16/33/96/86/dyndns13.jpg
In desperation, I also called a friend who lent me his Netgear modem/router, which supports DynDNS: well, it was enough to enter hostname, username and password so that everything started to work perfectly.
    I am truly saddened
There's also an odd thing I don't understand: if I press the CTRL key and EDIT simultaneously in the AirPort window, appear three other fields... What are these?

Thanks in advance for all the help you'll give me. Damiano

  • Airport extreme uses its ip when forwarding ports

Ive set the extreme to forward port 21
the trouble is that the ip that the client is forwarded as is the airports external ip rather than the connecting external ip
In other words when a server on the net with ip 200.200.200.200 tries to connect to the ftp server the IP the FTP server sees is the airports external IP
This makes it impossible to filter access by IP
Is there something Im doing wrong ?

    thats unfortunate
every other router Ive tried on the market works the "other" way and forwards the actual client ip
I wouldn't be surprised if there was an RFC that covered it
time to send the extreme back

  • Lost connection between airport extreme and macbook air when transferring large files

    Can anyone help...?
I have an imac and macbook air wirelessly connected to a airpot extreme being used as a router with a hard drive for sharing files accross the network.
It connects ok but when we try and look at a number of large files one after the other, or copy files from the shared hard drive onto the macbook air, the macbook loses wireless connection?
A very strange issue which i cant figure out....
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Shirmy

It could be a wireless interference or strength of wireless signal issue.
What happens when you connect the MacBook Air to the router via an Ethernet connection?

  • Is their suppose to be sounds when zooming on this camera?

I have a Fujufilm Water/Shock/Dust/Freeze Proof 12.2 mega pixel camera. This is the camera I have below.
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/FUJIFILM+-+FinePix+12.2-Megapixel+Digital+Camera+-+Green/9772631.p?id=12...
When I first got it I took test photos and videos. Well, They all came out great except when I zoomed DURING a video, You could hear it zoom and it was a loud, irritating noise when it zoomed. I mean, You couldn't hear me talking or anything in the backround. Just a loud noise.
Is this camera suppose to make a noise when zooming DURING a video? Or is it just my camera?
    Thanks!

Not just point-and-shoots - a common problem with ANY video recording device with an internal microphone.
Tape-based camcorders were notorious for tape noise.  They did a fairly good (but not perfect) job of reducing focus/zoom motor noise, and that was for dedicated video cameras.
In general, you can never expect good audio quality from any device (even a dedicated camcorder) using a built-in microphone.  If you have a camera that does not include a microphone jack (nearly all entry-level camcorders and DSLRs with video, and I think all point and shoots are in this category), if you really need high quality audio you can get an independent audio recorder like the Zoom H1 and splice the audio in during post-editing.  (That's how the professionals do it - that's the whole idea behind the "clapper" in movie production.)

  • Chirps when charging is this normal

Last night while charging my Ipad it would make a little chirping like beep periodically. I eventually turned down the volume so as not to hear it.
    What is the deal.

Yes, it sounds like you were not using a wall outlet and supplied USB charger... the power voltage was fluctuating and causing the chirps on and off...
although "some" powered USB hubs seem to work, they take twice as long to charge and can run into this issue... best option is to charge using wall outlet...yes this is a pain and I've sent feedback...
