Airport Extreme - Everyday it flicks over to orange light for 30 seconds!

Hello all,
I have an Airport Extreme (Airport Utility says version 7.4.2). It's been really reliable and fantastic up until mid-last week when it decided that at least once everyday the green light will turn orange, it will remain like that for about 30 seconds and then go green again. While the light is orange, any computers connected to it drop the internet/network connection. There's nothing wrong with the internet connection, as that remains working (tested by connected directly to the router via ethernet and wirelessly, on both times the connection remained while the Airport Extreme went from green, to orange, and back to green).
Any ideas? I think everything is up to date, and no settings have been changed.
Thanks in advance.
Chris

Is anything connected to that second Ethernet port?  Have you tried connection your Mac to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable to see if that helps the configuration process?

What is the proper config for the Airport Extreme when a Voice over IP device is between the cable modem and the router.  Its a VoIPo device. The cable modem is connected to the VoIP WAN port and the LAN port on the device feeds the Airport Extreme.  The VOIP is working fine, and my Mac are getting 10. addresses from the Airport Extreme.  But I do get confict messages and lose my connection periodicaly.  Looking for help.

    Its a VoIPo device.
Per chance, is this device the Grandstream HT502?

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

Main reason is as I move from my first floor to my attic office and would like to place one (airport extreme)downstairs and time capsule upstairs to get complete coverage

In theory, yes. If you configure the two base station into either an extended or roaming network configuration, you should be able to walk a laptop between routers and the laptop should attempt to connect/reconnect to the base station providing the stronger signal ... but, in reality, this is not always 100% true.

  • My new AirPort Extreme will not turn on anymore, no lights when plugged in.

My new AirPort Extreme will not turn on anymore, no lights when plugged in.  I just bought it a few days ago. It has been working fine. I left the house for most the day and when returning home it would turn back on. I have tried to plug it into other outlets...nothing, I've tried the reset button...Nothing.

That is reported here a few times.. just take it straight back to apple or place of purchase for immediate exchange.

  • Remote access the airport extreme usb hard drive over the internet with multiple users?

I just purchase the new airport extreme 802.11n and set it up on my LAN behind a comcast modem with broadband.  I plugged a 3 tb Seagate hard drive formatted with fat32 (default) to it and have set it up for access for all of my computers, ipad, iphone, android in my house.  Everything works as expected, internet access, file access to the USB HD on all devices locally through back to my mac.  I would now like to allow my daughters in another state to access this drive through the Airport Extreme remotely from their location and have there own accounts on this hard drive to store and move their files for on the go access.  I have studied many of the forums and have enabled share disks over WAN, Enable file sharing but no body really gives an exact method of connecting remotely.  I had one of my daughters try on her Macbook Pro laptop through the finder, connect to server, by giving her the IP address.  She could see the name of the Airport Extreme but could not access the hard disk and got a "Not able to connect message".  I am obviously missing something simple that needs to be checked or setup but have drained my brain trying to figure it out.  Most of the forums describe clicking manuel setup on the Airport utility, but with version 6.1 this is now where to be found.  I have a DYN account but could not figure out where to input this in the Airport utility.
There is a network option which has DHCP lease and range and a box for Enable NAT port Mapping Protocal with Enable default host at:
I am guessing that this is for some other purpose though.  Please help

Try installing AirPort Utility 5, then you may be able to follow the guides you mentioned earlier:

  • Sharing Airport Extreme with attached HD over WAN to Windows

So I've never gotten this to work. I have three external HD's attached to my airport extreme, the extreme is set to share over WAN, and any Mac can connect with zero problem using AFP. However, I've never had a Windows computer connect successfully using Samba. I have connected over LAN on windows just fine (not with Samba, of course, just with the built in windows systems) but I've never had anyone using Samba be able to connect from over the web.
Has anyone else had this work? Any guidance to offer? A friend of mine said the Samba port (445) was closed on my IP - because this is being shared via the Extreme, I can't very well set port forwarding to deal with this issue, so I'm clueless. Help!

Your drive is most likely formatted with NTFS, which the Mac and the Airport will both read, but not write to.
The drive needs to be Mac formatted.

  • My airport extreme is a little over  a  year old.  All of a sudden, we cannot connect to the network with the password.  I am the only administrator and have not changed the password.  The signal shows strong but no connection.  It is not the modem.

Airport extreme suddenly stopped "accepting" password.  The signal appears strong -- just will not accept a log on.  No changes have been made.  It is not the modem.  Have replaced the airport with my old linksys and wifi works fine.  Is there a way to "reset" it and start over.  We've unplugged it (airport) for 30 minutes and still the same result.

To do a factory reset, unplug the Extreme and push in the small round reset button on the back with a straightened paper clip or point of a pen and hold it in while plugging it back in - when the light starts to blink fast, release the button - then wait for the light to blink slowly - this indicates that the factory reset has completed - you can now re-configure the Extreme from scratch.

  • Painfully slow data transfer on Airport Extreme (Start and stop over 6 hours for 200 megs)

I've had my airport extreme set up for 2 years with 2 hard drives attached for my files.  I have never had a problem with transferring to them until this morning.  I have been unable to transfer anything to the drives at all.  Every file I have attempted starts, will get about 10% through the transfer (regardless of size) and hang.  I left one file "transferring" to see how long it would take - a 183 meg file took over 6 hours!
I have restarted the APE, the drives, the computer and check all connections.  Nothing has changed from yesterday to today.
I don't even know where to begin with trying to figure out this issue.  Can someone please help?

The new Airport Extremes and Time Capsules suffers from terrible performance over the 5GHz band and it's a problem that not only affects me and you, but hundreds of thousands of other owners.
Nobody knows if it's a firmware problem or the Marvell chips inside that's the problem, and Apple hasn't said or done anything for months.
I'm still hoping for a firmware update to solve this, but if it doesn't get fixed soon enough, I'm gonna return it and go back to backing up to wired disk and my rock solid Airport Express.
Not the happiest answer, but at least you have a clue now.
    Cheers,
    Koski

  • Losing connection to airport extreme everyday

Shortly after it was launched, I bought a Airport Extreme ac. After some time configuring it, I was able to get the job done. However, the following day I started to have a problem with it, and it is always the same problem.
For no reason, the connection seems to drop on my iPhone, Mac and a windows PC a few times a day. The network is visible but the devices ask to re-enter the password, and when I insert it says that it is incorrect. The problem is definitely the router because when the problem is on one device, it is on the others.
For the problem I found two solutions. One is to reset the router and configure an all new network, and do that everyday makes no sense. The other is to wait for an hour or two, sometimes more, because the devices connect to the router suddenly, without asking to re-enter the password.
I kept upgrading the router with the latest firmware and airport utility software, but the problem persisted.
Can anyone help me? When working the router is brilliant...really fast, but this is really annoying.

ok, after resetting and restarting dsl modem and laptop i tried the following:
System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced
    Removed my preferered network
    And again added it
    Ok
    Apply
    Turned Airport Off and On
and i was up again. btw i had a connection but activity monitor was showing me i was not or hardly receiving data, now it is...
    hope it helps for you!

  • Airport extreme: Invalid Argument errors over satellite connection

Question 1: Have you observed problems with Apple equipment getting high error rates over high latency connections such as satellite connections?
Question 2: Do you know of any reason why Apple equipment is more likely to exhibit this behaviour?
We have a shack in the country that has a 10Mb/sec satellite internet service.  The satellite in question is the Australian NBN service which I believe uses an Optus satellite.
We get frustratingly large numbers of errors from Safari: "Safari can't open the page <insert random url here> The operation could not be completed. Invalid argument."
The message in the browser is always the same.  It can take half-a-dozen retries to get a page to display.  On average, aroiund 30% of connection attempts yield this error.  It seems to be load dependent, and at the moment it is happening less often - maybe one in 10 requests are failing.  It is currently 2 Jan, around midday and most Australians near the coast will be at the beach, and those inland have 50 degree temperatures predicted so they will be wallowing in the mud-hole that was once the dam, so I expect the satellite load is rather low.
My ISP says they have around a dozen customers reporting this problem and they all use Apple gear.
    Observations:
I was able to open a VPN connection to one of my customers (after several attempts) and the VPN connection worked flawlessly for the duration of hte session which was several hours.  Meanwhile, the mrs was cussin' away about invalid argument errors.
Once a page starts loading, it generally finishes.  This seems to be independent of the level of complexity.  So once a page gets going, it keeps going.  Selecting a link from it, however, will likely result in another error.
Pings are returning in around 1 second.
Transfer rate is good - close to the promised 10Mbit/sec.  Response time, of course, is aweful compared to a wired or 3G connection.  However it is acceptable provided a response is actually received.
Gear is: A couple of netgear routers in point to point mode bridging to the Airport Extreme in the house which is the main router.  There are a couple of Airport expresses about the place doing other stuff.  Terminal equipment includes iPads x 2, macBooks x 2, iPhones x 2.  Everything gets a master reset periodically when the power goes off,  and the problem persists.  All devices experience the problem.
    Thank you for your help

I have had my airport extreme for over a year and comcast even longer than that. For some reason my airport now says it has a invalid ip address. I plugged my modem directly into my imac and the internet connection is fine. I have power cycled everything multiple times with the same result. I even reset my airport extreme and created a new network. Nothing is working please help!
Does your cable modem have any sort of battery backup that would prevent it from resetting fully during a power cycle?

  • Airport Extreme USB Disk Sharing over Internet Without MobileMe

    Hello
I just wanted to say I read this article http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/769126-airport-extreme-connecting-remotely-wit hout-mobileme/
and wanted to do what the title said.
So, I am able to share the disks fine over the LAN with both Mac and Windows PCs.
    My Question is:
-some people have said that to map the disk over network, you need the AirPort utility installed onto the computer.  Is this true?
-I am unable to access the disk over the internet.
I am wondering if I should configure the "Disks" then File Sharing section of Airport Utility or whether I should turn to the Advanced> Port Mapping section.
    For the File Sharing Section:
    1.     What is the username needed when trying to connect to the disk?
    2.     Do I need to enable share disk over WAN and also the checkbox to enable the Bonjour service?
    3.     What do I need to fill out for WINS server?
    4.     Can I just mount the drive using the WAN IP?
    Port Mapping:
    1.     What exactly is personal file sharing?  Do I need to use this to share my hard drive?  And is it only compatible with Mac?
    2.     Should I use the IP address 10.0.0.1 (default IP of router) as the place where I want to map to?
Thank you and sorry for this long post.

You do not need the AirPort Utility installed on your computer in order to access a shared drive from either a remote location or on the local network. This utility's primary purpose is for administering the base station.
You will need to both enable File Sharing and configure the AirPort for Port Mapping. It is pretty much described step-by-step in the article you referenced in the beginning of your post.
Ok, so let's go over the basic steps to see if anything was missed.
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn, and then, note the IP address shown.
    Select Manual Setup.
Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
    Click on Update.
To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:
From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
    Click Connect.
You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
    Click Connect.

  • Is Airport Extreme a Worthwhile Upgrade Over 1st Generation Airport Express?

My two year old Airport Express still works fine.  WIFI seems good.  Wireless connection to Imac computer seems pretty fast.  Is it worth getting the Airport Extreme?  Will connection speeds increase or video streaming?

If your AirPort Express is two years old, it is already a second generation Express. The first generation Express was 802.11g only, while one that is two years old is also capable of 5 GHz 802.11n.
The newest one a/k/a the "dual band" AirPort Express has several attractive features besides its simultaneous dual band capability, but it is not likely that you will find any appreciable speed increase, and none at all if you are already using 5 GHz 802.11n channels exclusively.
If you have a mixed network with both 2.4 and 5 GHz devices then a dual band base station would be an improvement. Either the Extreme or the new Express are capable of that.
