Airport extreme external drive

Is it possible to password protect each external flash drive connected to an airport extreme base station?  Also is it possible to password protect each partition on a single external flash drive?

Is it possible to password protect each external flash drive connected to an airport extreme base station?
No. Whether you have a single drive or multiple drives attached, each will use the same password security method.
Also is it possible to password protect each partition on a single external flash drive?
No. Apple offer little in terms of accessing the attached drive(s). You cannot set permissions individually for either files or folders on the hard drive or set different permissions for different partitions or different hard drives.

  • AirPort Extreme External Drive Not Recognized

I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac and am hooking up a Seagate 1.5TB external hard drive (USB 3.0 with backward compatability) to the USB port but it is not being recognized by Airport Utility. Does this need a power source? What am I doing wrong?
I did reformat the external drive from NTFS to be Mac compatible (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and when I plug the external drive into my MacAir, it shows up and is completely usable. Once I plug into the AirPort Extreme though, it goes into the netherland and I can't find it at all.
    Help?

I have the HGST Touro USB3 drive that works fine with apple airport routers.
I did try and establish a sort of database.

Contributions are sadly lacking but it already shows.. some work some don't.. some work with hubs some don't.
    To OP..
As per Bob's comment.. you are now in Limbo.. since you don't know if the problem is the hard disk or the usb hub. And it is possible either or both are at fault.
Look at OWC as they seem to specialise in external drives for Mac/Apple world. They sell hundreds of different USB drives.. I recommend you ring and ask their sales staff .. explain the problem and what you want.. a disk that works with model xyz airport.. like the Apple document show.
Even from Australia we buy stuff from OWC as they have first class knowledge of apple systems. And if you look for specials they are excellent.. !!

  • Airport extreme external drive Format?

I have an airport extreme and would like to set up either one or both external drives 2tb and 3tb as media drives or storage. I have a combination of Imac, Ipad, PCs and Android devices that connect and I would like to have the abilty to read/ write to these drives. Is this possible? And if it is what format should the drive/s be in?
Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else I have searched and can't seem to get a good answer.
    thanks for the help!!

An USB drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), FAT16, or FAT32, and will work best if formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) when there are any Macs on the network. ExFAT and NTFS won't work.
If it's an Ethernet drive and not an USB one, you don't normally need to be concerned with how the drive is formatted. Just plug it in.

  • Persistent Logon for Airport Attached External Drive with 'Disk Password'?

I am using an Airport Extreme with a USB attached external hard drive. The drive is setup to require a 'disk password'. On the XP and Vista machines I have on the network, once they are setup to add the network drive, they store the password and whenever you boot up the Airport attached external drive is available. However on my iMac and MacBook, you need to click on the Airport Extreme in the SHARED tab under FINDER and then 'CONNECT AS" and manually enter the password to access the drive. Is there anyway to get the drive to log on 'automatically' using the 'disk password' method from the iMac? It seems a bit strange that Windows offers this persistent log on option, but not the MacOS 10.6.2???
The reason I have a 'disk password' is that I don't want guests to my wireless network... friends and relatives who visit, to have access to the Airport attached shared drive.

you can't; try using accounts although I don't like the function of accounts.

  • Set up a Windows formatted Drive as an Airport Extreme USB drive

I have a USB hard drive that was formatted as a Windows NTFS drive.  The drive does not have data that I want to keep.  I assume I have to format it as a MAC drive to use it as a Airport Extreme USB drive.  What is the best way to set it up?  Should I format it with the drive attached to my Macbook Pro or can it be formatted attached to the Airport?  Are there any things I should be aware of in attaching this drive to the Airport?
Although I don't think it matters, this drive is a Vantec Nexstar MX400 enclosure with two 3TB hard drives configured as a 3 TB RAID 1.  If anyone has additional information I should know about working with an MX400 RAID 1 drive in formatting it for a Mac it would be appreciated.

You need to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), FAT16, or FAT32 while it's plugged into a computer. exFAT, NTFS, and non-journaled HFS+ won't work.
You may also need to use an USB hub with its own power supply.

  • Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme + External Hard Drive for iTunes Library

Hi, I currently have an Airport Extreme (Gigabit) and am planning on getting a MacBook Pro. What I want to do is keep my iTunes Library on an External Hard Drive and attach it to my AirPort so I can access it anywhere in the house (and world). Now I have been reading various reviews that perhaps a Time Capsule would be better for my needs. I don't plan on using it for Time Machine backups right now, just as a NAS Drive. If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate the advice.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I have something like that working at the moment. My setup is based on a Mac Mini Core Duo [ OS 10.5.6 ] connected to a Time Capsule. I have configured iTunes to store all archived music on the Time Capsule. I use the Apple Lossless format for my CDs and approx 420 titles have taken approx 130Gb from my 1Tb Capsule. In general this setup works well [ especially the optical out of the Mac ] but be aware of the following potential pitfalls:-
    1. The Time Capsule is a little on the noisy side and depending on the quality of your playback equipment, your choice of music, ambient noise and your values of "satisfactory" you may want to put your Capsule or HDD in another room. This seems OK for generic playback, but in my experience wireless is not a good way to go for streaming content.
    2. iTunes v8.0.2 has a preferences capability to allow you to redirect it's archive to the Time Capsule. However, even if you leave the Capsule switched on it goes into a "sleep" mode. Rip a new CD and iTunes won't tell you this; instead it will silently reconfigure itself to store on your local hard drive and then you're left with the challenge of moving your collection piecemeal if you want it in one location, followed by manually updating iTunes to "point" it to the new location of the music.
One nice thing about the Capsule is that it does allow other connection types. I have mine networked to a PC running Ubuntu Linux and a music player called Amarok and I am able to stream the Mac-Ripped lossless files and play them over Linux perfectly... Works very well. Apparently you can do this with a Windows client and iTunes for Windows, but I don't run Windows as a matter of principle and can't validate that.
My 1Tb Time Capsule runs hot, too. Not dangerously so, but hot to the touch. There are no cooling fans, but you might want to think about placement; it needs plenty of fresh air circulating around it.
For what it's worth [ and I appreciate this is going beyond your question ] I also wanted my setup to be able to store and retrieve recorded TV. I have Elgato EyeTV and a USB Freeview decoder. I quickly learned that despite claims to the contrary the performance of the wireless connection just isn't up to streaming video content. So I went out and purchased a pair of Ethernet-over-mains adapters from Zyxel that are absolutely perfect for the job.
Yes, the Capsule is a little pricey for what is little more than a Hard Drive in a box, but it does work very well.
Beware the timeout disconnections and the silently re-configuring iTunes thought...

  • Time Machine, Airport Extreme, External USB Drive

Having some challenges using Time Machine on an external drive connected to my Airport Extreme. I've tried several configurations all of which started with formatting the drive with a single partition Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID.
The first configuration was where I did a 100GB Time Machine Backup to the drive while it was connected (so I wouldn't have to deal with a slow first backup over wireless, because my MacBook Pro is of the older 802.11G wireless versus N). Then moved the drive over to my Airport Extreme, mounted the drive and started the backup. It failed with the following error message "The backup volume is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required."
The second configuration was where, after reformatting to single partition to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID, I connected the drive directly to the Airport Extreme without having done a Time Machine Backup. After mounting the drive, I started Time Machine and it began to run. I left it over nite to back-up and, while it got started, it did not make it past about 9GB after over 6 hours.
Any help here would be most appreciated...
    Happy New Year

  • Airport Extreme - NAS Drives or External USB?

I'm looking at getting an Airport Extreme for my house but I wanted to know the best options.. Should I go with a couple of 2TB NAS Drives or two 2TB External USB Drives?
I have one MacBook Pro, one Windows Gaming Machine and one Windows XP SP3 Netbook.
WIll there be compatibility issues between using NAS over USB or..?
One finaly question as well, I know this is an Apple based forum/ site but its definitely worth asking.. Anyone confirmed that Android works with the Airport Extremes?
    Cheers

Thats a good thing to hear because there are 3 Nexus's that are in the household.
I am very torn between the Express and the Extreme.. I just wish the Express was a little bit more money and offered the Harddrive support! That's all I need it for

  • Airport Extreme external hdd causes router to reboot

When I try to access my external WD hard drive (formatted to FAT32) on my AirPort Extreme, it freezes and causes the router to reboot. How do I fix this?
I am accessing the hdd from windows 7 pc.

Try adding a powered USB hub....even if the WD drive has its own power supply.
Reason...the USB port is borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power for a hard drive even when the Extreme is new and even when the drive has its own power supply.
If the Extreme is a few years old, it is not delivering as much power to the USB port as it once did, and it needs some help.
Worst case, the internal power supply on the Extreme is starting to head South. That is usually not an issue until the device is 4-5 years old.

  • Time Capsule vs. Airport Extreme & external HDD

Hullo all. For time capsule backups, i am either going to purchase a 1tb time capsule unit or an external usb drive to use with an airport extreme base station's usb port. Wondering if someone more knowledgeable than i knows if either choice offers a transfer speed advantage over the other.
Also, if i go with the external usb drive option then i'd like to employ a usb hub so that when necessary i can also run my printer off of the same airport's usb port. Would anybody know if this would work okay, without compromising backup speed and quality?
    Thanks!

Of course - that is the essence of my question: what's faster, time capsule or an AEBS and fast usb external drive. And is the speed difference significant.
One big problem not being addressed by that choice is that Time Capsule itself is slow. Even if you connect a computer over Gigabit Ethernet directly to a Time Capsule with its internal interface hard drive, you will not get throughput anywhere close to Gigabit Ethernet speeds.
From the Macworld review of Time Capsule:
Depending on the size and number of files being backed up, throughput ranged from 45 to 60 Mbps over gigabit Ethernet. This would put an initial 100GB backup at 4 to 6 hours.
That's right. Real transfer times are lower than 100Mbps Ethernet, on a par with 802.11g wireless, and well below USB 2.0.
The speeds in the review and in my experience mean that with Time Capsule, neither USB nor the hard drive is the real bottleneck because both have higher throughput than Time Capsule's networking chipset. I don't know if the AEBS would be faster.

  • IPhoto Library, AirPort Extreme & attached Drive

Hello, I have multiple iPhoto libraries spanning 100gbs, it's getting too large for my MBP.  Plus next time I upgrade my MBP it'll have a SSD and so my libraries will definitely be too big. I want to be able to access my libraries without having to plug in an external drive. So my plan is to move my iPhoto libraries to a drive attached via USB to my Airport Extreme. I will then backup that drive with a cloud based backup solution. I appreciate accessing iPhoto libraries via wifi may cause increased response times but is there any problems I should be aware of with this solution?  What would you recommend?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Tim

Besides what are the alternatives, if my house was flooded, burnt or robbed I'd also lose the external disk backups.
Multiple back ups to HD stored offsite.
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • (Synology, ReadyNAS, or Airport Extreme)+External

I just recently switched to Mac. I had a big desktop, my girlfriend had a very old macbook, so we are dumping both and just bought a MB Air. We need some external storage and my initial idea was an Airport Extreme + an external harddrive and using that as a NAS. The reason for this instead of a TC is that we want to be able to unplug the Hard drive and take it with us incase we are going some where with no wifi access.
I also have not given up on having a smaller Windows desktop in the near future, I love both operating systems, so I want both
2 things with the Airport Extreme with an external:
I have heard that they are rather slow. Now if this would be the large chunk of my storage, I do not want a slow NAS dragging me down on a brand new laptop.
Also, when I get a windows desktop in the future, I would need special software to access the drive attached to the Airport Extreme, not a huge deal but annoying.
Now for the other options: Synology and ReadyNAS
From what I have seen, Synology is the better brand and ReadyNAS is the budget.
If I were to use an external attached to one these (I also will mount internal drives too), would it be equally as slow as the Airport Extreme?
Would I need to format the harddrive differently, essentially would I still need software on the windows desktop to access the NAS, or could we leave the drive in its current format (useable on both operating systems).
I know the one downside of this is that the Airport Extreme has a router built in, do any of the Synology or ReadyNAS drives have this? Most internet providers in San Diego where I am provide a Router/Modem in one.
    Thanks for your help!

I have heard that they are rather slow. Now if this would be the large chunk of my storage, I do not want a slow NAS dragging me down on a brand new laptop.
It appears that your goal is to have quick-access file sharing as a higher priority to overall file storage. If this is the case, a dedicated Ethernet NAS would be a superior solution to an AirPort Disk (a USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule base stations.)
The AirPort Disk will work with both OS X & Windows clients ... even Linux. However, as you mentioned, disk data access speeds are not stellar.
Also, when I get a windows desktop in the future, I would need special software to access the drive attached to the Airport Extreme, not a huge deal but annoying.
No. The Extreme's file sharing service supports the SMB file sharing protocol to allow access from Windows or Linux-based clients.
If I were to use an external attached to one these (I also will mount internal drives too), would it be equally as slow as the Airport Extreme?
Possibly, but that would depend on the connection type used for external HDD support on these dedicated NAS devices.
Would I need to format the harddrive differently, essentially would I still need software on the windows desktop to access the NAS, or could we leave the drive in its current format (useable on both operating systems).
NAS devices have built in file server support. Think of them as mini servers with multiple internal HDDs. Whether or not, your PC will require additional software will depend on what additional features (RAID, iTunes Server, Time Machine support, etc.) that you want this NAS device to provide. In most cases, if the NAS supports a particular feature it will come with the appropriate software to access it.
I know the one downside of this is that the Airport Extreme has a router built in, do any of the Synology or ReadyNAS drives have this?
None that I know of and would doubt any will in the future.
Most internet providers in San Diego where I am provide a Router/Modem in one.
... and in that case getting an AirPort Extreme or any other wireless router would not be necessary ... unless you still want to go the route of having a router that supports file sharing with external HDDs.

  • Windows 7 with Airport Extreme External HD Connected

I have read for the past few hours and worked to get my new Toshiba Windows 7 laptop to recognize my external hard drive that is connected to my Airport Extreme.  I have 2 other laptops, Windows XP, that connected without problems.  I have tried almost every solution I could find in this forum with no success.  I have turned off the windows search function.  I have changed the airport channel from automatic to manual selecting channel 11.  I have Windows 7 Home Edition and cannot access the local security settings.
I am at a loss and very frustrated that I just bought this new computer and cannot use it.  Any suggestions or fixes?
As I mentioned, I have literally spent a few hours searching, reading and trying.
    Thanks.

For Win7 Home edition, you will have to make a Registry change. Please do so only if you are comfortable with making Registry edits ... and, as always, any errors introduced may render your Win7 device unbootable.
Open registry editor ( Start search - regedit)
    Browse to  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Create a new DWORD value  with the following properties:   NAME: LmCompatibilityLevel    VALUE: 1
Restart your PC and try the connection again.

  • Is the Airport Extreme Hard Drive sharing ok for Time Machine?

With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

Unless the content of time machine is minuscule, USB will perform the worst at consistent data throughput. You might consider an ethernet storage device instead. The base station supports Gigabit Ethernet (though Wireless 'n' is maximised well below that).

  • Airport Extreme Hard Drive + Printer

    Hello,
When I was reading through the Airport Extreme features on the Apple site, it says that the Extreme supports both a Printer and an external Hard Drive connected to it via a USB hub.
When I launched Airport Utility to see if the HD and Printer was getting recognised I noticed that the printer is listed as a Hard Drive as well as a Printer?! and the actual Hard Drive is listed no where.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks.
