AirPort Extreme FTP port is open when doing Remote Port Scan

I have a question regarding the AirPort Extreme Base stations running firmware 7.7.3. Currently the AirPort is not port-mapping any services, however when I do a remote port scan of that particular AirPort I have noticed some TCP ports are open from the outside, such as FTP port 21, RTSP port 554 and ARCP port 7070. Why is that? I thought the AEBS blocks these services by default, unless otherwise configured to be open. Is this a vulnerability with the firmware?

TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products - Apple Support
Your 554 and 7070 may be open due to links to itunes store. It is not a big vulnerability since it is for streaming.
Port 21 is more a concern.. It is used internally by the AE apparently.. but I really do not know why. FTP as a protocol is not offered to the outside world. so you cannot connect to it and get info for files.. even if you have a hard disk plugged in. Why it should be open to the outside world I am not sure.
Do you have BTMM turned on? It may be involved with remote services.
If you are concerned it is not hard to fix.. port map those ports to a non-existent client in the network.. however your itunes store connection might stop working as well as some other things... that need those ports open.. There is also a good chance you cannot map them when they are used.. so do a factory reset and before you setup other applications or BTMM do the port map and see what happens.
You can also post the details to apple directly but I honestly doubt you are facing any big issues here.

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

• I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely. How am I able to do this?

I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely. How am I able to do this? The company that supports the system says I need to open the following - 8200, 8016, 8116, 10019, 12088. All help is appreciated.

Open AirPort Utility on the PC, select the Airport Extreme and click Manual Setup
Click the Advanced icon
Click the Port Mapping tab
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the connection list to set things up
Reference pages 49-51 in the Apple AirPort Networks guide for more info
IF.....you do not see a Port Mapping tab when you click the Advanced icon, then that would mean that the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode and the main routing functions for the network are being provided by another device.
You will need to set up the port mapping on that device, which is likely your modem/router or gateway.

• Airport Extreme removes port forward settings every reboot

I have set up various port forward settings on my Airport Extreme from OS X Server. However, every time I reboot the Airport, all port forward settings are lost except Contacts, Calendars, and DNS. It gets very troublesome to constantly readd all my settings in there. Port forwards are the only settings that are lost.
Please help!

I found the issue – and it's fairly simple and obviously really. I'm guessing you were adding the ports from OS X Server in the order they are listed within Server.app (where they are listed in alphabetical order). After Calendar, Contacts and DNS is "File Sharing".
If this is enabled, whilst File Sharing is enabled on the AirPort Extreme, the port forwarding entry for File Sharing, and anything below is removed.
Simply disable "File Sharing" from AirPort Utility before continuing (as recommended by Server.app when setting up the service for File Sharing).
I understand you replaced your AE and no longer have the issue – I thought I'd leave the explanation should others encounter it.

• Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420), Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420)

Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420), Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420)

The AirPort Extreme fully implements the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocols for a through n and will work with any computer that uses a compliant version of any of those protocols. So, yes it will work with the Lenovo as long as the Lenovo is not doing something strange with wireless.

• Does the Airport Extreme support Port Fowarding?

I'm trying to get the remote access for my HP Media Server running through my airport extreme.

of course it does. Read the help documents for more information.
open the airport utility application that should have been installed from the disc that came with the device. Then click the help menu item and pull down to airport help.

• Airport extreme blinking amber light error when connecting to new modem

I have just bought and installed a new modem gateway. It is an Arris TG852G DOC 3.0 model with a built in WiFi router.
After connecting it and activating it through Comcast, I reset, then reconnected my airport extreme MD0331LL/A Model No. A1408 to the new Arris
modem, I am getting blinking amber lights on the base station. I have internet connectivity, but I am still getting an amber light. My wireless devices (ipad and iphones) all see the old network name and id and seem to work just fine.
When I scanned for my airport base station in my airport utility (version 5.6.1) to try to resolve the error message I get
a message stating that the Airport Utility is not detecting any airport devices.
I cannot reset the default settings as these buttons do not work within the Airport Utility.
I suspect interference between the built in router in the Arris and I understand I need to operate it in bridge mode. Can you please help me fix this.
The COMCAST people are extremely unhelpful, and stated that this is not their problem but a problem with my router
as they have provifded me internet connectivity through the modem and the issue is my problem.

Try connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if AirPort Utility can detect the AirPort Extreme that way.
If yes, click on the AirPort Extreme and then click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
A window will open to explain why the amber light is blinking
If the message indicates that you need to configure the AirPort in Bridge Mode......
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and restart the AirPort Extreme
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable that you were using to configure the AirPort Extreme now
It would be a good idea to power off both the Arris gateway and the AirPort Extreme now
Wait a minute
Start the Arris first, and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
You should be all set

• Airport extreme blocking port 25 from my macbook pro

My airport extreme is not supporting port 25 from my macbook pro, only product in my residence that port 25 is not supported. (iPads, iPods, macbook air)

I believe I understand this better now. When I unplug my MacBook Pro from the network including disabling Wi-Fi, then when I open AirPort Utility it of course shows and I am no longer connected to my home network on the MBP. All the other hardwired or Wi-Fi connected computers, printers, hard drives and iPads are still connected.

• What are some of the best iOS apps can remotely played videos, audios, photos and text files from a NAS hdd connected to Airport Extreme USB port? And how to configure this setup?

I have already set up NAS hdd as connecting it at USB port of Airport Extreme, i also want to remotely access it from iPhone, so what's the next step? What are some of the best iOS apps can remotely played videos, audios, photos and text files from the NAS hdd and how to configure this setup?

*Edit - I am not able to connect to the NAS when hardwired to the airport extreme.

• Airport Extreme Bad Ports (WAN and LAN)

The WAN port and one of the LAN ports on my 4th generation Airport Extreme just died. I've tried a power cycled factory reset and I still can't access it via those two ports. I'm assuming something fried it since my Verizon ONT had to be replaced as well. To insure this doesn't happen in the future I'm considering the purchase of an APC ProtectNet Ethernet surge protector. http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=pnet1gb
Does anyone have any expereince with this device? If so, where should I place it? Should it go before the Verizon FIOS ONT or after it?
Also, what can I do with my Airport Extreme? Is it worth repairing or should I just use it to extend my Time Capsule network?
Thanks!

... Is it common for AE port issues to be intermitent?
No, but an AE that has been damaged by an electrical surge could exhibit the problem you describe. The effects of repeated electrical surges are cumulative, so a subsequent surge could result in a permanent failure. Don't be concerned about it, this is just a fact of life with sensitive electronics.
I had an older Express with lightning damage and it was an ordeal to reset it, but it continues to work to this day. Since then I purchased the ProtectNet. Everything "expensive" is protected with APC UPSs, and that is not limited to computers - these days most consumer electronic equipment is prone to such damage.
I would not be concerned about continuing to use your Extreme. Block off or otherwise label the inoperative port so you don't forget which one it is.
I can't restate it enough - make sure your utilities are properly grounded. I have seen $50,000+ worth of equipment damage due to the lack of a $2.95 ground lug. Next time you have Verizon come out to do anything have their technician verify their system is properly grounded. Insist upon seeing it yourself.

• Airport Extreme Ethernet Port Won't Recognize DSL Connection

Hey ya'll,
We had a big thunderstorm -- power in house stayed on but stupid AT&T DSL connection went down. When I got the connection back up, the Airport Extreme continued to give me blinking amber light saying the ethernet cable is not connected -- even when it is. Tried reconfiguring to no avail. Is my Ethernet port somehow fried? Is there something else to try? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated as having to be wired to the DSL is making me very cranky. Thanks!

OK, I just tried another external HD. This time it was LaCie 1Tb. As soon as I connected it, it was recognized by AirPort Extreme. What's puzzling is, that same thing happened with my SimpleTech 1Tb one last night. It was easily recognized by AE and then all of a sudden AE would never recognize it again.
At first, I though maybe these HDs are not supported by AE, but that's not the case. One is LaCie with Samsung HD103UJ drive inside purchased at Apple store, another one SimpleTech with WD inside, and other two are both super reliable Sygate HDs (never ever had any problems with them).
Hmm... I just disconnected LaCie one and tried SimpleTech one more time and it worked. AE can see it again. What's going on in here? Something is definitely not right.
Can't test this port through printer since I don't have one available at the moment.

• Airport Extreme FTP Econnrefused

Hi, Currently I am have issues with my Airport Extreme and FTP to my webserver. I do a bit of web development work which requires me to connect to FTP servers to upload updated files every so often but I am battling with the Airport Extreme AC version. Everytime I try connect using Filezilla, I get Econnrefused. If I restart the router I can login for roughyl 20 mins ebfore it blocks it again. I have switched routers to one of my old routers and it works fine so its definitely the Airport Extreme. I am wondering if anyone has a solution to this. I can FTP into my machine from external IP via Port Forwarding but I want to be able to connect via FTP to web servers.

FTP has some severe issues in the latest version apple routers.
I have tried to track the problems for a while.
FTP issues.
There are severe FTP issues with the AE.. the last couple of versions of the Gen1-5 firmware as well as the Gen 6.. See this thread.

The last post in this thread by.. SBeattie2
I think will condemn you to replacement of the AC by a router that actually conforms to standards.
SFTP might work.. see this thread.

• I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes does this occur with the new extreme?

I presently use an older AirPort Extreme but my reception comes & goes. Does this occur with the newer version?

1) If the reception comes and goes as a result of wireless interference from other sources in your home and around the home...other wireless networks in the neighborhood....or...nearby cordless phones.....then a new router is likely to experience the same issues. See this Apple support document for symptoms and fixes of wireless interference.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365
2) If the reception comes and goes as a result of an aging power supply in the older AirPort Exteme or another component that is intermittently acting up, then a new router should take care of that.
What we cannot tell you is whether 1) or 2) applies to your situation. If possible, it would be good idea to take the older AirPort to an Apple Store or Apple Servicer....if you have one near you....to let them take a look.

• Play music from Airport Extreme to iPhone without open Macbook?

I recently bought the new Airport Extreme and placed my iTunes library on an external drive which I connected to the airport. Is it possible to play the music in the iTunes library on my iPhone 4S, without having my Macbook Air turned on and iTunes open?

Unfortunately, no. You still require an AirPlay "server" to stream the iTunes media from the AirPort Disk to the iPhone. Typically this server would be iTunes running on a host computer, like your MacBook Air.

• Airport Extreme n giving 6753 error when trying to get to confi

Hello guys, I am new to the discussion, so I hope this is not a redundant question. When I try to confi my Airport Extreme n with the Airport Disk utility, I get -6753 error after a long delay. The base station has a green light, it is easily found, but I get this error. I cannot access my USB drive any longer on the Airport Extreme n. I still can see and access my wireless printer, TIVO, etc and can get on the Internet with all computers, I just can't change any confi with the software. Any help or insight into this problem would be appreciated

A Time Capsule at work was giving this exact same error after it would fail to write changes to the device via the AirPort Utility. After a phone call to Apple, they decided the device is "defective," and I should exchange it.
It would work intermittently with the error (over the two days I've messed with it), but it would often disappear from the network, etc. Taking advantage of the exchange seems like a hassle, but also like a no-brainer.
