Airport extreme goes to sleep ?!

When i stop connect to my airport extreme (this's a test, no one connect to it), it automatically goes to sleep & its light turn off. I can't connect to it anymore ....& need to un-plug the power & take it on again. It still work good. however it would go to sleep again with the same steps above. What happened to my airport, do i need to push the reset button
thanks

Hey Chau Hoang Du!
You should try resetting the Airport router. Here is an article that can help you complete this troubleshooting step:

  • Airport extreme goes goes off a lot

My airport extreme goes off line and on line a lot and the green light never goes on anymore at all, why?

What you describe is a classic symptom of wireless interference.
Please take a look at this Apple support document to learn more about the causes of wireless interference and some possible "fixes".

  • Can not connect to drive on airport extreme n after sleep

When I put my MacBook to sleep without disconecting HD I can not connect to it. I get a server not available message. I have to reboot airport extreme. Any suggestion?

There's at least three discussions on this. The problem is that when your computer goes to sleep, there is a possibility that your router will renew DHCP and your IP number will change. This causes the drive to disconnect in a bad way and it will not reconnect. The default setting on the router is only 4 hours so some people have tried setting the number really high to fix the problem however this is not totallly reliable.
    Reliable Fix:
Assign static IP numbers for all computers that use the hard drive. You can either do this by going to the DHCP tab and entering MAC numbers for each machine under the "reserve IPs" option, or you can do it the old fashioned way by configuring each computer in network preferences with a static IP number.
For my network, I am configuring this on the computers for non portable hardware and using the "reserve" option on the router for portables.
If you use your air disc while away from home on a network where you do not have this sort of control over assigning IP numbers then don't let your computer sleep without first disconnecting the drive.

  • Mac Mini/Lion Server/Airport Extreme Won't Sleep...?

I am at a loss with this one.  I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.7.4 Server (11E53) connected via gigabit ethernet to an Airport Extreme.  This computer will not sleep on its own using the system sleep timer.
If anyone has any ideas that may help, I'm all ears!  The Mac Mini should sleep as intended and the Airport Extreme router should wake it if network resources are requested via a Magic Packet.  This same Airport Extreme does wake the other computers on the network just fine when they are configured to Wake on Lan (womp 1 in the pmset -g output, below).
The server is configured to offer the following services: file sharing, Time Machine and screen sharing.
The power saver settings on the Mac Mini are configured to sleep in 45 minutes, turn the screen off in 1 minute and wake for network access is enabled.  The output of pmset -g is below for reference:
    Active Profiles:
    AC Power                   -1*
    Currently in use:
    hibernatemode      0
    disksleep          10
    womp               1
    networkoversleep   0
    sleep              45
    powerbutton        1
    ttyskeepawake      1
    hibernatefile      /var/vm/sleepimage
    autorestart        1
    panicrestart       15
    displaysleep       1
If the Mac Mini is manually placed in sleep mode, via the Apple Menu or the button on the Login Screen for example, then it will sleep just fine. While the Mac Mini is sleeping, it will wake properly when the shared resources are accessed via another Mac on the network. For example, if the Macbook Pro tries to begin a Time Machine backup using the Time Machine Server on the Mac Mini, it will wake just fine and the backup will complete with no issues. The Mac Mini will not sleep again using the system sleep timer and must be manually put into sleep mode.
There is one printer (Canon MP560) installed on the Mac Mini, connected via USB, not shared on the network and no print jobs stuck in the print que.
I tried using the PleaseSleep software but that causes problems when the Mac Mini is used via Screen Sharing.  When the Mac Mini is controlled remotely via Screen Sharing, PleaseSleep waits about a minute into the session and forces sleep mode, cutting the session short prematurely. This is unacceptable.
Also, there are no assertions that would prevent system idle sleep using the system sleep timer, as seen in the pmset -g assertions output below:

I Have the same issue with pleasesleep.
No ARD Session without sleep ;-)
My stup is a little bit different to yours.
My MacMini act as an HTPC for Plex and it dosent sleep as well.
I guess it has something to to with External USB HDDs or in your case printers or USB Hubs or etc. etc.
    I found a AppleScript called Nacrolepsy 2.0
It dosent work probebly right now but I hope It could be a solution in the near future.

  • Airport Extreme goes down a few minutes after successful connect

I have a new Eee PC 1000 and an Airport Extreme base station. Both support 802.11n I can connect just fine, but after being connected for ten minutes or so, the connection stops working. Worse, it also makes my Mac Mini's wifi connection to the Airport Extreme base station stop working, and the Airport Extreme has to be power cycled before a computer can successfully connect to it again.
I happened to purchase a new Airport Extreme base station for another location a few days ago, and found the same problem. In both cases, the problem was 100% repeatable.
Has anyone else experienced this, or anything similar? Can anyone please suggest a fix?

"Has anyone else experienced this, or anything similar? " - just read half a dozen messages on this forum - thousands are experiencing this or related issues!
"Can anyone please suggest a fix?" - there's no shortage of suggestions, but none seem to actually work! The most successful I have found to date is disabling "n" and forcing it back to "b/g" - but even that only reduces the frequency of disconnects to one or two per day...
Only fix I know is to put it on eBay and buy Netgear - but even then my Mac Book drops out inconveniently frequently!

  • Airport Extreme goes away periodically, unable to connect

I have a current 20" Intel IMac and an older PBG4. I've had various Airport base stations since they came out. I recently upgraded to the new Extreme n model, and it works fine sometimes, then goes away sometimes for hours before the iMac or PBG4 can see it. I thoguht it was a problem on the iMac because it would show NO networks when this happened (there are about 5 others in my area). But, even the laptop couldn't connect. I often see the base station in a blinking orange mode, then green, then orange, then green, yet the DSL connection is fine.
It's been doing this off and on since I bought it but became so problematic the past two nights I couldn't get online at all for hours. I finally reset my Airport to defaults and just enabled the minimal stuff (WPA and a few port forwards) but I've found it offline already once today.
Is anyone else seeing this issue? I have my old Airport as an extended piece of the network now, but I've even disabled that and just had the new base as the only base and had the same problem.
    Thoughts?

Okay, maybe we can compare notes and find something similar. First, my background:
I had an existing Airport Express that was set up with port forwarding, MAC address security (only allowing certain machines to use it), WEP, etc. (I had to use WEB because the adapter my TiVo had would not do WPA.)
I upgraded the TiVo adapter and got this new Extreme about the same time. I imported my old settings to the new Extreme, then made some adjustments. I thought that was the issue -- I read about some kind of hardware MAC address caching at the ISP level that makes them stop talking to us, but this certainly wasn't that.
What happens: I look at my computers and see no airport signal. When I click the ))) signal icon in the menu bar, it sometimes spins the beach ball for awhile before opening. It usually shows NO NETWORKS at all, or may show one of the neighbors. But, when this happens, I can't connect to anything. It will often say "These was a problem trying to connect..." or whatever.
Resetting my Extreme does nothing. During this, sometimes I get blinking orange, sometimes it's green. But the issue is always weird because my iMac can't see ANYTHING to connect to.
Also, I made my old Airport a WDS extender. That I thought was an issue, so I disabled that and powered it down. Same problem.
So, last night I reset my Exteme to defaults, and just plugged in the things I needed to change for security. It happened again.
So maybe it's a problem with WPA (never used it with the old one). Maybe there's an issue being in n/g/b mode and if I set my Exteme to just b/g it will be better. No clue.
    Have you tried anything?

  • Airport goes to sleep

When my main mac is not used for awhile then the airport extreme goes to sleep.
when I want to use my mac again then it says I am not connceted to a network.  I have to manually reconnect to wake up the airport extreme.  If I want to use my mac air in another room then I first have to go through this to wake up the airport extreme.  How do I keep it awake so I don't have to go through all this?

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
If this did not solve the problem, please go on to step 2.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • Airport extreme working with external hard drive via USB port adaptor :)

Hi Everyone. I hope this post will be helpful because I have been very frustrated with apple and their customer support and I figured this out on my own by reading all of the discussions and playing with my settings but it took me a while...
I recently for school bought all apple products and I have non-mac products as well. I bought the airport extreme believing I could hook up all of my computers through it and share the printers and my mybook external hard drive with my husbands desktop and the other lap tops. Unfortunately this was not as easy as advertised...
I was not able to successfully have both computers stay connected to the printers so I have to have mine for my laptop connected via the airport extreme and my husband has his desktop connected to a different printer via a ethernet cable. It would work at set up and then a few hours later not print anymore and reinstalling the drivers just confused it... if anyone knows a solution for this please let me know. It worked wirelessly for me but not for him.
As far as the external drive for the airport extreme goes I went and bought an additional USB port hub so I could access my printer wirelessly and my external hard drive as well for time machine back ups.
I set up my external hard drive so that it will save files from both a mac and a non-mac computer and we can both access it (not sure if that matters in the solution or problem for others); however, the desktop (non-mac) was able to by clicking and dragging files to it assess the hard drive and utilize it and my macbook was not able to because the airport extreme showed the drive under disks but when I tried to access it through time machine it was not there. I played with this for a long time and finally figured it out.
I believe I went under finder, then chose go from the menu bar, then chose connect to server and the default for it is afp://10.0.1.1.. You enter this in under server address and you may be prompted to give your password. The password was tricky as well because it showed my computers user name and I thought it would want that password but instead it wanted the password to log into my internet or my airport extreme's password. Once I put this in I was able to open my time machine preferences, finally choose the mybook external hard drive that was now showing up, choose it and my computer is currently doing a back up as I type without the error message of failed, unable to locate volume, or any others.
Hope this posting was helpful and not to confusing and feel free to message me if you need clarification and think this may solve your problem as well. GOOD LUCK!

Seems to me you should have done your homework setting up your network and not assuming that any third party device you choose to use would work without problems.

  • Updates to airport extreme not working

I am trying to add a new computer using MAC Address Access Control for my airport extreme. Every time today (tried 4 times) that I have tried to add a new computer: Access Control->+->entered the MAC address and description->update. The airport extreme goes off then on, but then the network cannot be found; I then manually restart the airport extreme, the network is located, but the new entry (MAC address for new computer) doesn't appear in the access control list. The airport extreme is version 7.5.2 and all is updated. The Macintosh I am using to update the airport extreme is running Mac OSX 10.6.7. Am I missing something?

It's a hassle, but might be worth a try to reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory defaults and then try the complete new configuration again.
If you decide to attempt this, you can reset the AirPort Extreme by clicking AirPort Utility - Manual Setup. Then click the Base Station menu item at the very top of your computer screen in the same toolbar area as the Apple icon.
    Select Restore Default Settings.
No guarantees here, but this procedure has worked for other users who have reported the same issues.

  • Appletalk/Airport Extreme/Printers

How do I make everything work? I know the printer is old (apple 4/600), but a great printer, and was working fine with a lynksys router & and ethernet connection with an asante. I bought an airport extreme to work with AppleTV, but because of initial problems I eliminated the lnyksys router. I figured I would just plug in the ethernet connection (from the printer and Asante) into the Extreme or the 2nd ethernet outlet on the computer (mac pro). Problem- while plugged into the extreme... error message-I do not have appletalk on. If I turn appletalk on, Appletv (and Airtunes) die. If I go into 2nd ethernet port on computer... my whole network gets screwed up. What exactly is happening, and what can I do to? (I don't want to trash the printer)
    Thanks for any assistance

thank you for your response,I am not at home at this moment, however I beleive the way items are set up now (after working with 3 apple reps)... the WAN connection on the airport extreme goes directly into the modem, and one of the ports on the airport goes into the computer. When I attempted to put the printer ethernet connection (via asante), I get the error message... Appletalk is not turned on (howver if I turn it on I lose appletv and airtunes). The 2nd ethernet port is free, however when I plug in the printer to the 2nd port, my airport network got all screwed up (changed).
I am pretty clueless regarding networks,
    thanks again,

  • Network hard drive going to sleep?

A small question here! Is a network drives plug into the Airport is going to sleep if it's not used? Is there a setup somewhere where I can set the sleeping time for that network drive?
    Thanks you!
    Nicolas

It sounds like the drive isn't working. I suggest you return it.

  • Airport Extreme Hard Drive Going to Sleep

    Hi,
I have recently purchased an Airport Extreme along with a 3tb WD My Book Essential hard drive and all was going swimmingly (and I was wirelessly backing up using time machine) up until the other day. Annoyingly the hard drive is going to sleep after an hour or so of inactivity and cannot be spun up again without being restarted at the hard drive itself instead of when the network needs it.
Is there any way of spinning the hard drive up over the network automatically when it wants to back up or I want to find a file on the hard drive? Do I need to buy a USB hub? Or would another solution work?
    Thanks,
    Henry

It sounds like the drive isn't working. I suggest you return it.

  • Hard drive goes to sleep in 2 minutes when hooked up to my Airport Extreme?

I have a usb hard drive hooked up to my airport extreme as a network drive and it works great, I use it for all my movies and music and all my computers on my network can access the drive, but if I am not accessing a file it goes to sleep really quickly and then when I do want to access a file I haft to wait for the drive to spin up again. As long as a video or music is playing off it it continues to run as you would expect, just wondered if any one knows why it goes to sleep so quickly and is there away to extend the sleep time.
    Thanks

I don't know the exact reason but I've tried different externals and internal drive in the TC or usb attached to TC or the Extreme and some drives don't sleep and its annoying that these would use unneccassary power.

  • Airport Extreme Stopping G5 from Sleeping.. Help!!

I have just upgraded to Leopard. Before the upgrade my G5 would go to sleep automatically as set in the Power saving prefs.
After upgrading to leopard I found that my G5 will not automatically go to sleep.
After pulling my hair our I have finally discovered that my airport is keeping my G5 powermac awake.
If I disconnect my networked printer and DSL modem from the modem, it does not go to sleep. When I disconnect the airport to G5 cable the G5 goes to sleep.
My Airport SW/firmware seems to be up to date.
    Has anyone got any ideas?
Anything I can do with the ports to stop it from pinging my G5 and keeping it awake?
    Any ideas are welcome!
    Thanks,
    Steve.

Although I know you tried resets, but please give the following a go:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Airport Extreme disappears after waking from sleep.

Here is a strange one for the experts out there...
I recently purchased an Airport Extreme card for my G4 Powermac (FW800). It is the Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8). It installs easy, and it works great. I can connect to my Airport Express with no problem, and to my 2009 MacBook.
The problem occurs after the computer goes to sleep. After I wake it (even if it's only after a minute), the Airport Icon disappears and the Spinning Beach Ball of Death appears over the title bar, and the dock. I can click on windows and move them, but not use them.
If I use the Special Menu and tell the computer to sleep I don't have any problems. I'm using the latest update for Leopard, but this happened with Tiger, too.
    Any thoughts?

I had this problem just recently and seem to have fixed it today. I made the following changes:
I changed security from WPA2 to WPA using the Airport Admin Utility.
I went to the Network Preferences panel and found that the network was still listed as WPA2, so I deleted it.
I then added the WPA network to my preferred network list.
The computer now reconnects automatically after sleep or shutdown.
I don't know whether changing from WPA2 to WPA was necessary. It may be that all you need to do is delete and re-add the network.
    Hope that helps!
