Airport extreme has self assigned ip... on all my apple devices
Man oh man... this issue has been festering for almost an entire year now and I have not found a solution. Last August (2009) my macbook stopped wirelessly connecting to my ATT 2WIRE dsl modem saying it had a self assigned ip address. I bought the computer in July and could connect with no issues for about a month. Ever since then, I've been connected via ethernet with slow connection. At the same time, the 2 iPhones in our household also could not connect wirelessly. One G5 could connect wirelessly but was extremely weak and often dropped the signal.
I did tons of research and found zillions of other people with this issue and no resolution. I've tried every solution on macrumors, and apple discussions with no results... I've disabled firewall, renewed DHCP, tried DHCP manual (which then changes the status to say I'm connected, but nothing works in my browser), restarted, etc. At work, I can connect to our Linksys router wirelessly with no issues.
Originally I thought the issue was my modem so I ordered another one. Same issue. Just this week I was at my wits end and cancelled my service with ATT and switched to Clear. I acquired a Linksys router to connect to the Clear Modem and I'm STILL having this issue. The difference is now that my iPhone can connect wirelessly but my macbook still cannot. The router is a Linksys WRT51ab. My macbook pro is on version 10.5.8. I can only assume that some kind of update to airport is causing the problem. As of now, my IPv4 address is: 169.254.111.225
Please someone help me! I promise some kind of reward if you can help me fix this.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
The "AirPort Extreme" in this board area actually refers to Apple's "AirPort Extreme Base Station". It doesn't seem that you have such a thing. Please confirm that. The best place for similar posts is probably the "Getting Online and Networking" forum (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1222) of the "OS X v10.5 Leopard" area.
To address your problem, you might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

In its default configuration, the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) has its DHCP Server service enabled which would "listen" for requests from network clients that have the counterpart DHCP Client enabled (this would be the clients' default as well).
It sounds like something is amiss with the DHCP Server service on your AEBS. I would recommend performing a "hard" reset on the AEBS to see if this resolves the problem. -
Airport has "self assigned ip", no connection to internet but network ok
This is weird... the internet connection was working OK on my G5 desktop yesterday, today it doesn't... my work computer I brought home connected fine a few days ago but now it doesn't, the MacBook Pro I am writing this question with is working fine (hope it holds on to the connection!), our 2 iPhones are connected too. In the network settings for airport it says "self assigned ip address". Thanks in advance for any tips to correct this issue. Is this a glitch in the latest system update?
I solved my problem by reinstalling 10.5.5 and not doing the updates to 10.5.7. I don't know for sure if it is the update to 10.5.7 or the airport updates that caused my problem.
I out my old drive back in my Macbook and I had wireless again. So I out my new drive in and did the reinstall and now it works. There is a conflict with either the 10.5.7 update or the Airport update.
APPLE REALLY NEES TO FIX THESE ISSUES. you can read about them all over the internet. Many have just updated to 5.7 and then they have a problem.
So archiving and reinstalling 5.5 solved my problem. My old drive has 5.6 and it works. If had a copy of 5.6 I would have used that.
I will try doing another update to 5.7 and see if it still works. If that works I will update the airport. -
Wi-Fi has self-assigned IP address 169.254.9.151 and will not be able to connect to the Internet
In trying to setup my AirPort Extreme, it connects to the Internet on ethernetcables to computer but says it is not on WI-FI. I have configured it with all that I casn think of and yet I get, "Wi-Fi has self-assigned IP address 169.254.9.151 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
I did both a soft reset and a hard reset to no avail. PLEASE someone help!!
Thanks!I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results. -
My airport Extreme just stopped assigning IP addresses to wired devices
I have an fairly large home network that is run by an Airport Extreme.
- Comcast Cable Modem for 3 public (not static) IP addresses
- small switch to be able to obtain three addresses
- Apple Airport Extreme connected to the switch and it receives an IP address and internet connectivity from Comcast
- Airport Extreme connected to a 16 port Cisco switch to handle the wired connections in the house. I have 54 ports of which 9 are currently in use.
all wired devices connected through the wall and a patch panel to the Cisco switch.
The issue is that after working flawlessly for about a month (just moved into this house) it stopped today. any device going through the hardwired Cisco Switch is no longer getting an IP address from the Airport Extreme.
I replaced the switch with a second one to see if that was the failure and it is not.
I unplugged the Cisco Switch from the Airport Extreme and plugged devices directly into the Airport Extreme 1 by 1 and they were able to obtain IP addresses.
I need more than the three ports available on the Airport extreme.

This tells you that the AirPort Extreme is working correctly and the issue....whatever it is....is appearing after the AirPort Extreme on the network.
A few thoughts:
You have tested the ports on the AirPort Extreme and they are working, so the next step would be to disconnect the Ethernet cable that runs from the AirPort Extreme to the switch at the switch, and then connect a laptop to the Ethernet cable to check to make sure that you are getting a good IP address that way.
If you cannot, then you have a bad Ethernet cable between the AirPort Extreme and switch that will need to be replaced.
If the laptop is getting a good IP address when you run this "test", then you know that the AirPort Extreme and Ethernet cable are working correctly and the troubleshooting focus must now move to the switch.
Check to make sure that you have an unmanaged switch. Or, if it is managed design, that it has been configured to operate as an unmanaged switch.
Next, connect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the switch and disconnect all of the other Ethernet cables that are connected to the switch and test each port one by one with your laptop and a spare Ethernet cable to make sure that each port is working correctly.
If you cannot get a good IP address on your first test with the laptop connected to the switch, then you know that you have a misconfigured or defective switch.
If the switch checks out OK when you test each port, then the next step is to connect one of the Ethernet cables that runs to another area, and connect your laptop to the Ethernet cable to make sure that the cable is working correctly. Continue to test each Ethernet cable the same way.
About 95% of the time in issues like you are having, the problem is bad wiring somewhere on the network, even though the "tech" said that he tested everything. The trick is to find it....when there are no shortuts. -
my airport extreme has connected to a Tplink router, i set my AE in Create network, so i get a problem of Double NAT. How can i repair this probleme because i have to use TPlink for my IP TV and i want to use AE to creat my network and the guest NW. If we don't have a solution for this question, can i set my AE to use the IP TV and how??? I'm using a 4th Airport extreme
No, not unless it is simply a network connection.
How is your IPTV being provided.. if it is using a separate vlan or separate vpi/vci in the adsl connection. Who is your ISP?
Is the TP-Link ADSL?
Is the IPTV using a separate voice channel on adsl?
Or a different vlan.
Sorry but it is something where a definite answer is not possible unless you provide all the details.
The setups are unique to each ISP around the world..

Airport Extreme has ethernet connection but no internet connection
I am having an airport extreme connectivity issue that has yet to be resolved. For me, the cable modem (a Motorola Surfboard) recognizes the airport extreme (I have the round white saucer one) but the airport extreme, despite giving me an 'ethernet' connection (that also shows up as full signal strength in the menu bar), cannot connect to the internet, no matter what I do.
Seems the airport extreme is not recognizing/picking up the ip address of my computers.
The airport base station is recognized by airport utility, has an ID and I can name it as well as create a network, but no matter what I do and despite being told that I am connected to the internet via ethernet, there is no connection to the internet.
I have a dual G5 desktop hooked up directly to the cable modem and am trying to wirelessly connect a new macbook pro intel core dual.
Each computer can access the internet when directly hooked up to the cable modem, but neither can access the internet wirelessly.. so it's not the computers, nor is is the cable modem. I called Time Warner, all is fine with that connection.
Both my ethernet cables work (checked them both). So it must be the airport extreme.
I was on the phone with apple tech support for 5 hours yesterday!!! They made me run through all the things I did myself. From trying to reconfigure and rename the airport to completely resetting the airport. None of this worked.
And right now I'm on hold for a multi-media product specialist with apple tech support.
But they didn't do a thing for me yesterday so I'm hoping someone on here may know what to do.

Now my internet connexion work on my AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Station)... It seems that (for me) DHCP was the problem...
DHCP server (10.0.1.x) activated on the AEBS conflict with DHCP server (192.168.1.x) activated on the modem.
Before the AEBS 5.7 update (i made yesterday) this configuration with two DHCP servers with different IP addresses worked well... but not now...!
So, i disabled the Modem DHCP server. I rebooted the modem and the AEBS and success, my internet connexion worked again...
I used manual setup with fixed IP, submask, DNS to connect the AEBS to the modem...

We recently switched ISPs. To connect to the new ISP our Airport Extreme has to be in bridge mode. Now our Nintendo Wii won't connect to the Airport. Is it an issue with bridge mode that is causing this? We're running two Macs wirelessly with no problems. And the Wii did connect before the switch.
Hello and thanks for the reply. I gave this a try, turned off Airport on one of the computers and tried the Wii again. Still no connection. I should say that we're also running an old G4 (wired) off the Airport as well, with no problems. I've tried many things to make the Wii to work, including power cycling the Airport, turning off the security settings in the Airport, resetting the Airport to it's default and redoing the network, resetting the network setting on the Wii (several times), moved the Airport closer to the Wii, all with no luck. The Wii "sees" the Airport but won't connect to it. I'm at a loss for anything else to try, so any help is appreciated.

Why does my Airport Express say "self assigned IP address"? No IP address for the ethernet, and it is not connecting to my cable router any longer...
Some cable providers.....like mine, a well known company......seem to take anywhere from a few moments to sometimes up to 30 minutes to allow their equipment back at the cable company to fully reset and issue a new fresh connection.
So, it would not hurt to leave things powered down for 15-20 minutes or more when you perform the reset that John Galt suggests. -
Does the new Airport Extreme allow "guest network" setup across all my Airports on my network? I have 1 Airport as a router and 6 others as WAP's (bridged)
I assume that all of your WAPs are hard wired on the network.
If.....all of your WAPs are simultaneous dual band Apple AirPort devices like an AirPort Extreme or new AirPort Express.....and.....you have firmware version 7.6.3 (now 7.6.4) installed on all the AirPorts.....and.....you use AirPort Utility 6.3.1 to configure the devices......in theory.....it should work.
I don't have 6 WAPs, but I do have 3 and the network works perfectly allowing extension of both the "main" and "guest" network. -

Yes, if you plan to extend using wireless only and you use it with another Apple wireless router....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the "main" AirPort, as the "extender" can only extend the quality of signal that it receives. -
Airport extreme has to connect to internet if computer goes to screen saver. Any way around this?
Describe the issue in more detail.. as it doesn't currently make sense.. the AE should always be connected to the internet. It should never disconnect.. but the computer can fail to connect to wireless after sleep.. that is common problem.

Airport Extreme won't assign an IP address to OS 9.2.2
Is there a reason why my Airport Extreme won't assign an IP address using DHCP to a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver running Mac OS 9.2.2? The OS X partition running Tiger works fine.
I finally found that if I put and old dual-speed Netgear hub between the Airport Extreme router and the PM G4 Quicksilver running OS 9.2.2 everything works fine. Go figure!
Maybe one of the Mac gurus out there can tell me why this worked. -

How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network? I have an ISP provided wireless Router that has to remain as the base station. I am able to join my 1/2TB Airport Extreme and Airport Express to the network, but I can't access/use Time Machine.
One option would be to connect the Time Capsule (TC) to the ISP-provided wireless router by Ethernet. You can then configure the for a roaming network. Then, depending on what your goal is for the AirPort Express, you can either: 1) Add it to roaming network, 2) Configure the TC & the Express for an "extended" network, or 3) Configure the Express to "join" the roaming network for AirPlay.
