AirPort Extreme HD causing problems

I've finally got my hard disk (Maxtor OneTouch 250GB) working with my AirPort Extreme.
The problem is that I have folders with upto 80GB of files in them, which just dont open when I click on them. I'd rather not format the disk because I have way too much required data on it.
Is there any way of making the disk work perfectly without having to wait for 10 mintues for a folder to open (which may/may not open and causes the HD to be disconnected)?

Actually although my hard disk is connected via AirPort Extreme, my iMac is connected to the network on Ethernet. So my iMac isn't using the wireless at all to connect to the hard disk.
My hard disk has stopped going offline randomly, but it doesn't make a difference anymore because I can't even open any of the folders on the hard disk.
I was told that if I formatted the hard disk and created smaller folders then the computers on the network would be able to access files faster.
I'm trying not to format my hard disk, so if anyone has an alternative solution that solves this then I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

  • My Atv2 is  very slow movies and shows take forever to load it plays for a few minutes then pauses again. I thought if was a problem with my wireless router but I replaced it with a new airport extreme and the problem persists. Air play is just as slow.

My Atv2 is very slow with both AirPlay and rented and purchased content I spoke to apple rep and tried the things he suggested but the problem persists. Now it requires more lead time then the lenght of material being viewed. I haves broadband internet connection and airport extreme router so I don't think this should be a problem. Lately every time the unit goes to the screen saver an error message come up saying there was an error while loading content please try again later and you have to all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions? What speed of transfer should I expect using AirPlay ?

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • Airport extreme/hard drive problems

    Any advice appreciated...
Our airport extreme only intermittently recognizes our Lace hard drive and it's driving us crazy. We bought macbook, the airport, and hard drive at the same time (yes we abandoned the PC world) and had a friend hook it up. For two months everything worked fine and we even hooked our printer to the airport and printed wirelessly.
Then for no particular reason, the harddrive disappeared and we can no longer access it wirelessly. We can, however, plug the harddrive USB into the Macbook and we can use the harddrive perfectly. Also, interesting, if we open airport utility and click on "disks", the harddrive is there, but it doesn't show up on the desktop or Finder and we can't access it.
I've called Apple tech support numerous times (We bought the extra service, but sadly that didn't keep us from having to spend an extremely obnoxious time on hold. We thought Apples were supposed to easy. but that's another story..). So far, we did get the airport and Macbook to recognize the hard drive by simultaneously renaming the harddrive and unplugging the hard drive and Airport. That worked for exactly 18 hours. Then the harddrive disappeared again. I called tech support twice but after 45 minutes on hold each time, I lost my patience. (They make us hold for the first step, then hold again for the product specialists. Gee we sure are glad we spent extra for the extended service!)
Other interesting tidbits: We've never had a problem with wireless internet service and have always been able to wireless send jobs to the printer.
    Any ideas?
    Signed and thank you,
Not so sure switching to Apple was a good move.

This is the most acceptable solution I have come up with:
Either go to the DHCP tab under internet settings on the router and "reserve" IP numbers for any hardware that interacts with the drive or manually set IP numbers in your network instead of using DHCP. The problem occurs when an IP number to any computer connected to the drive changes unexpectedly. This would be whenever the DHCP lease renews if your computer is asleep when this happens. I have not had a single drive issue since I set this up.
If you need to access your drive from a remote location where you don't have control over how the network there operates, then avoid letting your computer sleep while it is connected to the drive.
I chose to manually assign an IP number to my desktop and also to remote base stations, however this is not so convenient for my laptop because it then wants to use the manual settings everywhere unless I set up another "location" which has to be manually changed. This is where reserving IP numbers under the DHCP tab was really useful. The laptops on my network are still getting their numbers from the DHCP server but the server knows to give each one the same number based on their MAC addresses.
If you take a look at the default settings for DHCP, you will notice that not all the available numbers are being assigned through the DHCP server. You can use numbers outside this range (other than x.x.x.255) for your manually assigned IP numbers and still have DHCP running for when guests come over to use your network.

  • Airport Extreme and DYNDNS problem - TESSERAX PLEASE READ THIS

    Good evening to all.
I've a problem with the configuration of an airport base station with dynamic DNS.
I followed the advice of TESSERAX here, but without success: airport does not connect to DynDNS and does not update the IP address.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
Days ago I was able to run DYNDNS but with completely different parameters, as described here (scroll to the middle, at the chapter: "Setup Your Dynamic Global Hostname in the AirPort or Time Capsule") :
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/#setup-apple-airpor t
Unfortunately, after making some changes in the airport configuration (which is abolutely not related to the DYNDNS), this has stopped updating the IP. I've tried to restore the configuration, reflash ecc but without success.
    This is my configuration:
    - PC Windows XP-SP3 running AirPort Utility 5.5.3 (FWIW there is an annoying bug that prevents you from writing the dot "." in the hostname field, the only solution is to use the copy-paste).
    - AirPort Extreme with 7.6 firmware ( 7.6.1 also available but I've read that isn't much better)
I also own an AirPort Express 2nd gen with 7.6.2 firmware, I've tried to use this in the place of airport extreme but idem, no success.
So, please please please HELP ME. Thanks everyone, Damiano

Hello Tesserax, happy to read you.
Yes, I referred to the part #2 of your guide but I've also read many of your other posts about it. In fact, let me thank you for your willingness, it's people like you that make the web a better place.
I also spent a good part of the night reading all the other threads on DynDNS but without success.
As for my DynDNS account, this is obviously a free account. The host name is like "<pc-name>.dyndns.org" as the user name using my email address (with or without domain "@ gmail.com" works anyway).
Click here to see a screenshot: http://i33.servimg.com/u/f33/16/33/96/86/dyndns13.jpg
In desperation, I also called a friend who lent me his Netgear modem/router, which supports DynDNS: well, it was enough to enter hostname, username and password so that everything started to work perfectly.
    I am truly saddened
There's also an odd thing I don't understand: if I press the CTRL key and EDIT simultaneously in the AirPort window, appear three other fields... What are these?

Thanks in advance for all the help you'll give me. Damiano

  • USB to Airport Extreme Printing minor problem...

I have an HP LaserJet 4650 that I use for my home office. It is connected through my Airport Extreme via a USB cable. I don't leave the printer on all the time but when I turn it on it won't print unless I unplug and plug the USB cable back in. This happens when I print from my Mac and when all the Windows based computers try to print from it. Once I disconnect and reconnect everything is fine. Any suggestions?

No ideas? Seems like Apple has problems with HP printers and Airport Extreme's, I have noticed lots of posts on here and other discussion boards about similar issues.

  • AirPort Extreme port forwarding, problems occurring. Please help.

Yesterday I discovered the game I have been playing allows for home servers. We are allowed  to host our own game server for other people to join and play along. This game uses ports: UDP 19132 and TCP 19132 (which I think is optional, but UDP is defiantly needed) to host a server at home. We are paired with Comcast internet, using an AirPort Extreme (latest firmware) router with airport utility (latest firmware) on an iMac (1 generation behind I think).
    Now the problem:
    - I want to host this game server on my laptop! Not the iMac!
    - The laptop uses Ubuntu and the brand is HP. It is connected wirelessly to my AirPort Extreme router. Now since it is not connected directly to the router, and is not an apple product I am not able to change the router settings from my laptop (I can deal with this, I'll just go downstairs and change the settings on the iMac).
    - Yesterday I went into AirPort Utility. I proceeded to click 'Edit' on the router picture in airPort Utility. Then I went to the tab where you can reserve a dchp or port forward. I added a new port aimed at: UDP public: 19132 ; TCP public: 19132 ; Private IP: 1.0.1.201 ; UDP private: 19132 ; TCP private: 19132 (I did not mess with the 'reserve dchp' setting). Then I went to my laptop and used a VPN to test out the connectivity of the port and server. Sadly I couldn't connect to my server it didn't work. I then deleted the port since it didn't work.
    - Today I did exactly what I did yesterday, except... I reserved a dchp for my laptop (keep in mind I had no idea what I was doing and i still dont) using its hardware mac adress. I also named the dchp reserve: mylaptop. Then i restarted the router, went to port checking websites and they still said my external ip had port 19132 closed.
    - I know for sure it's not my server or it's properties.
FYI: I used multiple port checker websites after completing my port forwarding, each and everyone of those sites said my external IP address has port 19132 closed when obviously I opened them. I also tried to bridge my linksys wrt54gsv4 router to my AirPort Extreme router and tried to port from the router menu of the linksys router. That ultimately failed.
Please help, thank you for reading all of this.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Been pulling my hair out trying to get this to work. Paid so much money just to have it connected to the playstation but its not letting me do that.
I have a 60gb Playstation 3 not a Xbox 360, so it comes with wifi.
I have been trying this non stop and about to give up. I hae been following what the playstation manual says. Its telling me to scan for access points but everytime I do this, it just has SSID: default, Security: none, Signal Strength: 45%.
I dont understand this cos I named my SSID as Garcia Home which shows on my mac and it also has full bars for the airport on my menu bar. The playstation is located in the room next to mine so it can't be 35-40% only for signal strength.

  • Airport Extreme, 5Ghz connectivity problems and poor media streaming

    Hi,
I purchased an extreme from the apple store a little over a week ago, and before I send the device back I would like to solicit recommendations from this forum.
    Some information about the setup:
    - Single airport extreme (supplying wifi services for my non-wifi DSL router and a connected USB disk)
    - Airport Extreme Firmware: 7.4.2
    - iTunes: 9.0
    - OS: Snow Leopard (10.6.1), Leopard (10.5.8), Window Vista.
    - Harddrive: 2TB lacie, USB2.0 connection only
    - 2.4 and 5 Ghz broadcasting mode
    - The device is broadcasting on all supported protocols.
    - Multiple clients (various: apple, microsoft, fujitsu)
    - Small space, no major concrete/brick/stone walls, signal strength is 5 bars of goodness
    - Country: Spain (I know there were 5Ghz restrictions here a while ago, but the device broadcasts on 5Ghz and is therefore not crippled).
If anything else could be of use, let me know and I'll update this list.
    And now the problems:
    1) 5Ghz connections fail
When connecting over the 5Ghz freq my connectivity to the extreme and the services it is offering (internet, disk sharing) is intermittent, at best. Basically, it has not worked reliably since I took it out of the box. This is equal for both of my macbooks and a fujitsu laptop (all with n support).
I've tried switching channels to avoid congestion - I don't live in a wifi-heavy area, and there are no other likely sources of interference (e.g. microwaves, cordless phones).
My connections to mounted disks come and go, I have to re-authenticate, and so on.
A general scan of the environment with KisMac does not show any major interference from other wifi networks (only 2 others in range, one is wimax).
I've tried to do some wifi analysis to see if I can spot any frame/packet related issues. Some rudimentary analysis indicates that when the connection stops working on the 5Ghz channel my laptop continually sends request-to-send packets to the extreme, but does not receive a clear-to-send. This occurs after a-few-seconds to a-couple-of-minutes of connectivity - the connection initially 'works' (i.e. wifi packets are sent/received correctly and I can access the internet).
    2) Data access and media streaming from the connected USB drive is very poor
I've mostly had problems with itunes. I thought this might be related to the size of my library, but this shouldn't effect single track playing. Even enabling large buffering in itunes results in intermittent pauses and long track loading.
Note: this occurs over b/g connections; as stated already, n connections don't work. iTunes simply goes into a coma for while and then eventually fails. See above. Also, if I just stream from my macbook (i.e. HD connected via USB), it works flawlessly.
The extreme was running 7.4.2 - updated on first connection. It's now running 7.4.1, as I read on the forums that there were some perceived problems with 7.4.2 (although these perceptions may not be accurate.
    Concl(f)usion:
I believe I've ruled out the following:
    - Distance
    - Interference
    - Laptop related issues (the same problem occurs with 2 macbooks and a fujitsu laptop).
    - Latest firmware
    - Software (apps, OS, etc)
Which leaves me to ponder two possibilities:
    a) The extreme is damaged.
    b) The extreme is not a good product (surely this can't be so?!)
There is, of course, a c-possibility ... that the collective experience of the online community might be able to offer me an alternative path?
I would be very grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions, tips, tricks, spells or simply a hug before I contact apple to begin the process of explaining the issues and seeking some care.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Dave.

I have had the same problem. Really frusrtating, expecially since the reason I bought the airport was because of all the wireless congestion in my neigborhood with only 11 channels on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
Bought my airport dual band about a week ago. It had the firware 7.4.2. After extensive searching, I found other with similar issues. Apparently the last stable firmware may be 7.3.8. I am on 7.4.0 and not having any issues any longer (only testing one day now).
This may solve your issue. Login to your airport and choose manual setup. on the summary page, find 'Version' 7.x" and click on the word 'version'. This will allow you to rollback your firmware. I went with 7.4. Depending on what options you need with airdisk, Time Capsule, rolling back may remove those options, so experiment. You can always go back to 7.4.1 or 7.4.2 from within the interface.
    Hope this helps.

  • AirPort Extreme card installation problem

I recently bought an airport extreme card to put in my eMac (1.42 ghz G4). I follow the instructions to the letter for installation, but whenever I try to turn the computer on after installation, it sounds the 'turn-on' chord and then just sits there, black screen, power light on, never getting past that point. if i shut down and take the card out, it turns on just fine, everything works. I have all the latest software updates, installed the airport software that came with the card. what could possibly be wrong?

Most folks that report problems with the installation
of the AirPort Extreme cards find that they don't
have the card fully in place. There should be a
"click" when the card is firmly seated in the slot.
Hi. I'm facing same problem. My eMac doesn't start. I pushed as hard as I can the AirPort in the slot. It seems fitting well. As soon as I remove the card it start like a dream. I'll try again after reading your comment, but I am nervous. What if I break the housing?

  • Airport Extreme Sudden Speed Problems

Router: Latest Airport Extreme model with the most up to date firmware
    Main Device: 2012 Retina 15" running 10.9.4
    Problem
I am having a rather unusual problem with my router.  Until about 3 days ago, my computer iPad and other devices had consistent internet connection quality and speed. Now I am experiencing a slow internet connection, constant dropped calls in Skype, failure to access that App store, and a host of other internet problems on my Retina display 2012 15" macbook as well as slow connection on my iPad and iPhone.  Websites will "hang" as they begin to load, nothing will happen, and then they will load a bit later.  Streaming of videos is very slow and large file streaming and downloading is significantly inhibited (if it works at all).  I have a fast broadband connection that is working very well with Xbox live (direct connection to the router) so I am quite sure that the router is the issue, not the internet connection.  Interestingly, when I clock my speed my connection I get 10 and 1 mbps (using speedtest.net). I have all full wifi signal strength according to the indicator in the upper right.
    Strange Airport Utility Readings
In airport utility, the internet symbol appears to be going orange (disconnected) and back to green.  In the past, I have noticed a flashing orange light on my airport extreme but I would just restart it and it would go green.  The light is currently green.
    Troubleshooting
I have tried a factory reset and it has not done anything to help.  I have tried changing the channel and it also does not seem to help.
Any help or direction would be much appreciated. I am hoping this is a problem that can be resolved here at home but I am beginning to suspect I may have a faulty router.

Yes, pack it up and take back to apple for checking / replacement. I think they are often unreliable.
See the long thread about this issue.

  • Why does a "linked" AirPort Extreme suddenly report problems?

I am stumped. I have a home network consisting of a new dual-band AirPort Extreme (which works flawlessly), an AirPort Express (which only rarely has problems) and an older "n" AirPort Extreme, which has recently begun to report problems on a daily basis. This is how it happens: I will be online with my MacBook (and I should add that no one else is online) and suddenly AirPort Utility will launch with the following message:
AirPort Utility found an AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet) that is reporting problems.
(Please note that this is NOT the AirPort Extreme I am connected to; I am connected to the 5 GHz band on the new AirPort Extreme.) When I attempt to resolve the problem by clicking Continue, or click on Manual Setup, I get the following message:
An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
The only way I can get the problematic AirPort Extreme to work is to do a hard reset and manually re-enter all settings. It then connects to the network perfectly -- until the same problem pops up the next day. What gives?

Is it possible one of your Airports isn't configured as a bridge, and is creating an IP address conflict?
You've "hard reset" the Extreme, but perhaps it's your other Extreme or the Express that's started to misbehave, leading you to think the problem is elsewhere. Have you reset them?
I'm reaching here; these are just two things that come to mind quickly.

  • Airport Extreme IP address problem

Until about three weeks ago I had no trouble with my Airport network. All three computers (with my iMac as the base station) had no problem connecting to the internet. Then, with no changes, my network began to slow down. I went through all of the basic trouble shooting and contacted Charter, our cable modem service provider.
After 90 minuites of telephone trouble shooting, nothing was resolved. They sent a techie out the following week, who immediately told us that they were not trained in Mac format, installed a new cable modem (said the other was out of date), and still no solution. After a few minutes of updating through the Airport Extreme's utility, we had brief service. Then, we lost all service through Airport, and have extremely slow service without it, even though we are subscribed at the highest speed service (5Mb) we have available. The base station's IP address is not showing up as 1. HELP!

With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • External HD + Airport Extreme + USB Hub = Problems

I'm having issues connecting my 2 external HDs to my airport extreme via USB Hub. I have a My Book 1TB HD and a 500G Maxtor OneTouch that I connected to a powered usb hub that is plugged into my Airport Extreme. It works for a minute, I can connect wirelessly to both, then it hangs up and fails to mount. When I disconnected it all and plug one of the two into the Airport Extreme, it works flawlessly. I want to use the 1TB for all my goodies and the 500G for my Time Machine Backups.
I guess my questions are these:
    1. Is the USB Hub not supplying enough power or could it be that the USB Hub just cannot handle two HDs. (Its a rocketfish powered usb hub btw)
    2. What four port powered usb hub would you recommed me using to connect the 1TB and 500G external HDs to my Airport Extreme?
    Thank you in advance!

I am having a smiler issue i have a 1TB WD hard Drive plugged into the USB hub on my Airport Extreme. When it mounts it works great...I use it to access all of my music. The problem is it gets disconnected constantly and when it does it also takes out my Airport Express. I have to unplug the Extreme to reset it all.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

  • Airport extreme reporting no problems but still can't connect

I have Airport Extreme connected to a Verizon modem(?router?) via ethernet cable. I can connect to the internet wirelessly through a network set up to use that modem. I have been using a network that is through AirPort, for the past year or so, so that I can connect a printer to several computers. The network stopped working after I rearranged my office and moved equipment.
I have the Verizon router attached to AirPort through an ethernet cable. The router is working, and when I set up AirPort, it says it's working just fine, too. I have tried resetting the router and the AirPort, powering down the router and Airport for 30 min, and then powering up the router for 5 min. and then powering up AirPort. The green light is on, its showing up when I run AirPort utility. The network is showing up as black, not grey. When I do diagnostics, it's showing that the ethernet is unplugged. I checked the connections and they are OK.
I have been struggling with this for a few days. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, I assume that you have the printer attached to the AEBS's USB port ... correct? With the AEBS, configured as a bridge, it is now acting as a "pass-through" device. Meaning that network devices connected to either the Westell or AEBS wireless networks should be on the same subnet. How do you have the AEBS wireless configured compared to the Westell's? That is are you operating two separate wireless networks?

  • Installed airport extreme having range problems

i have a mac osx and installed an airport extreme in my house, and wanted to extend the range down to my shop which is aprox 300 ft away. it is a wood building with windows. i bought a express and placed it in the window at the shop and the light doesnt turn green. (express is working i tested it at the house) last weekend i took my ipad and walked to the shop and about halfway down the signal strenghth went from 3bars to 2bars,when i get into the the shop there is barely 1bar. i want to stream the nascar races this season and am just beside myself. my internet carrier sold me a high speed modem that doesnt seem to make any difference. do i need to place another express between house and shop? if so how do i weather proof it?  can i run a dsl line down to the shop from my house and hook it up to the express? been messing with this for over a month with no success.. please help me!

the range of the Extreme is more like 150 ft as you have seen from your quick check with the iPad.  To get an adequate signal in the shop you could run the DSL line out there and put in another modem, or you could run an ethernet cable from the Extreme to the shop and connect that to the Express and then use the wireless signal of hte Express.  Putting an Extreme mid-way and prviding waterproof enclosure protection, and power will introduce more issues to deal with.

  • Airport Extreme network performance problems - roaming network help!!

Hi! I have the following setup: ADSL2 Router (about 18Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up - tested by connecting laptop directly to modem), connected to Time capsule set up to "create network" in "bridge mode" 802.11n 2.4GHz. My desktop is connected directly to the Time Capsule - download speed is OK, upload speed is a mere fraction of what it is supposed to be, sometimes a mere 50Kbps. In the next room (about 5 meters and 2 walls away) speed on the wireless network drops to about a tenth of wha I get at the modem and I can not reliably use my apple TV in that same room as the bandwidth does not seem to cut it. I have an extra Airport Extreme base station but I can not seem to set it up to make the situation any better. If I set it up wireless to "extend the network" the speeds just drop further. If I try to set it up as a roaming network linking it directly to the time capsule via an ethernet cable as per the instructions from Apple, I would need to set the Time Capsule to be "distributing a public IP address", however whenever I try do this I just get a NAT error message saying I should switch to bridge mode (I have tried to change the subnet IP range, etc without any luck). If I switch to bridge mode and connect the airport extreme (also in bridge mode) I just get a network that is frozen . . . I am tearing my hair out : (( Is there a way to connect both the Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme to the modem/router to cast the same wifi network?? Or can I connect them to each other in bridge mode somehow?? Any suggestions will be much appreciated! Thanks

It would be a good idea to "hard reset" the "remote" AirPort Extreme (AEBS) to clear out any old and possibly conflicting settings. Hold in the reset button for 10-12 seconds. You'll see the amber light begin to blink more quickly during this process, just be sure to hold for the full 10-12 seconds and then release the reset button.
Check that the ethernet connection is from one of the LAN <-> ports on your "main" AEBS to the WAN (circle of dots icon) on the "remote" AEBS.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located below the row of icons to assign a name for this AEBS, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your "main" AEBS wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Radio Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your "main" AEBS. Should be WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Same password as your "main" AEBS
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to save settings and let the AEBS restart
Then, power down the entire network...all devices...order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run a moment
Start the next device attached to the modem the same way
Keep starting devices one at a time until the network is back up
You should be good to go.
