Airport extreme interfering with FM radio

I Have just set up my Airport extreme and it is causing a lot of interference with the signal to my bose radio that is situated close by. Can i do anything to negate this other than move them further apart?

Normally the two technologies should NOT interfere with each other as they operate in totally different RF bands. Does your Bose employ wireless speakers? I know my Bose home theatre sub-woofer speaker operates in the 2.4 GHz band and I do have to keep my wireless router and this sub-woofer apart to prevent interference.
Other things you can try is to change Radio Channels on your AirPort Extreme. By default, both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands are set to the "Automatic" option. I would start by changing only the 2.4 GHz band to one of the manual channels: 1, 6, or 11. You can use a utility, like iStumbler, to determine other Wi-Fi in your vicinity to determine those with the strongest signals and what channels they are running on. Then set yours to one that is fartest away. Hopefully, this would provide enough channel separation to not affect your Bose radio.

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

I'm trying to decide between the time capsule & airport extreme. With either option, will i not have air play? I have an IMAC, MACBOOK, 2 Apple TVs, 3 iPhones...

AIrplay to digital or analogue devices like speakers or hifi system is only available in Express. Or Apple TV.
The TC or Extreme will pass airplay protocol just fine to your ATV.
The Extreme and TC and now identical apart from the TC having an internal hard disk.

i have an imac g4 purchased Dec 2003 runnung OS 10.5.8.  It runs fine with airport off, but when I turn airport on it freezes with the black page,  "restart by holding power key . . ."  I swapped the airport extreme card with the one in my ibook G4 (purchased same date and running same OS).  No change in operation.
I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

  • Using an Airport Extreme router with PC.

I was told that I could use the Apple Airport Extreme router with my PC - but I can't seem to figure it out.  Any suggestions to get started?

Sorry to be so ignorant when it comes to this type of stuff.  I have a laptop (Dell) and a home computer (PC).  The Apple man told me all I had to do with my previous router was unplug it and plug in the Extreme and it would walk me through the steps.  It didn't.  I think I may have changed some settings on the PC.  Now I can't even get the previous router to work so I'm hardwired in on my laptop to even get here.
Do I need to hardwire in the PC, download the above utility, then try to hook up the Extreme router?  How do I make it "secure" or locked so no one else can use it other than ones with the key code?
Thanks so much for the above information.  Going to try it now.

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa

  • Dose the airport extreme come with a internal hard drive connector

Dose the new airport extreme come with a internal hard drive

If you want an internal drive, go for the Time Capsule. It wouldn't make sense to launch two AirPorts that are the same but one does not include a hard drive even if it comes with the hard drive connector.
Another option you have is to connect an external hard drive to your AirPort Extreme

  • Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420), Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420)

Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420), Does Airport Extreme works with Lenovo ThinkPad(L420)

The AirPort Extreme fully implements the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocols for a through n and will work with any computer that uses a compliant version of any of those protocols.  So, yes it will work with the Lenovo as long as the Lenovo is not doing something strange with wireless.

  • Setting up my Airport Extreme properly with multiple routers on a home network

I have a 4 bedroom house that over the years has had router after router added in different rooms. I recently bought an airport extreme and an airport express as I am getting sick of not being able to network everything as well as to have one strong wifi.
So I have set up the Extreme in my office and the express at the far end of the house and it's doing wonders in boosting the wireless signal. This is what I am trying to solve:
How do I make all the wired routers apart of my wired and wireless network? The router/modem that was installed by Verizon obviously should stay. I read in another forum that NAT should be turned on and all other routers shouldn't but would be bridged. I logged into the admin settings for the router and couldn't find any place to change this.
As you can tell, I am no IT. So I am sure this may all be confusing. My ultimate goal is to have a shared hard drive on my airport extreme and shared printer on my express and all computers on the same network, communicating to each other. Currently I have 3 routers + airport extreme and express all connected.
Hope someone has the patients to help me out.
    Thanks.

    Good diagram!
In that case you definitely want the D-Link to act as a switch, and its manual describes how to do it:
    (page 10)
    Connect to Another Router
If you are connecting the D-Link router to another router to use as a wireless access point and/or switch, you will have to do the following before connecting the router to your network:
    Disable UPnPTM
    Disable DHCP
Change the LAN IP address to an available address on your network. The LAN ports on the router cannot accept a DHCP address from your other router.
To connect to another router, please follow the steps below:
Plug the power into the router. Connect one of your computers to the router (LAN port) using an Ethernet cable. Make sure your IP address on the computer is 192.168.0.xxx (where xxx is between 2 and 254). Please see the Networking Basics section for more information. If you need to change the settings, write down your existing settings before making any changes. In most cases, your computer should be set to receive an IP address automatically in which case you will not have to do anything to your computer.
Open a web browser and enter http://192.168.0.1 and press Enter. When the login window appears, set the user name to Admin and leave the password box empty. Click Log In to continue.
Click on Advanced and then click Advanced Network. Uncheck the Enable UPnP checkbox. Click Save Settings to continue.
Click Setup and then click Network Settings. Uncheck the Enable DHCP Server server checkbox. Click Save Settings to continue.
Under Router Settings, enter an available IP address and the subnet mask of your network. Click Save Settings to save your settings. Use this new IP address to access the configuration utility of the router in the future. Close the browser and change your computer’s IP settings back to the original values as in Step 1.
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and reconnect your computer to your network.
Connect an Ethernet cable in one of the LAN ports of the router and connect it to your other router. Do not plug anything into the Internet port of the D-Link router.
You may now use the other 3 LAN ports to connect other Ethernet devices and computers. To configure your wireless network, open a web browser and enter the IP address you assigned to the router. Refer to the Configuration and Wireless Security sections for more information on setting up your wireless network.
While reading the above bear in mind the Verizon box is your router. Don't overlook any of the details in these instructions - read all of it and understand its implications. If I were doing it the first thing I'd want to know is how to reset the DIR-601 to factory defaults since I'd be sure to muck it up about a dozen times before getting it right.
It sounds as though your Express is configured correctly. It is providing a wireless access point for your wired network, the one created by your Verizon router.
The optimal configuration for this design is to configure the Express to create a network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the one created by your Verizon router, otherwise you will have two wireless networks. Leave its "channel" on "automatic" so it won't conflict with whatever the Verizon is using.
It will look a little like this:
I'm assuming some of your devices still need 802.11g so the "radio mode" will most likely need to be b/g compatible.
When everything is up and running, experiment with the wireless transmitter power for the Verizon router as well as the Express. It's best to use the least amount that will work for you, so as not to create needless wireless interference for everyone else. This also minimizes the possibility of people piggybacking on - or trying to hack into - your wireless network.
As far as getting your Windows computer to see your external HD, I haven't a clue. I'm sure it's possible but I'm not a Windows expert.

  • Extending Airport Extreme network with Airport Express using WDS

I have been having some trouble using WDS between an Airport Extreme and Express, with the Extreme acting as the internet router in the network.
Both devices have been updated with the lastest firmware.
I am using Airport Utility 5.5.1
    *Airport Extreme Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
Allow Network to be extended: Checked
    Radio Mode: Auto
    Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Channel Selection: Manual (Same as my Express)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Main
    Allow Wireless Clients: Checked
WDS Remotes: (MAC of my Airport Express)
    *Airport Express Configuration*
    *Wireless Tab*
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
    Channel: (Same as my Extreme)
    Network Name: (my network name)
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Allow this network to be extended: unchecked
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible)
    *WDS Tab*
    WDS Mode: WDS Remote
    Allow Wireless Clients: checked
WDS Main: MAC of my Airport Extreme
I think that covers the pertinent stuff. If there's anything else that might be useful, please just say so.
So, the Extreme is green-lit, working fine. Wireless clients can connect to it just fine. On the Wireless Clients page the MAC of my Express is showing up, with a type of WDS listed. It does not, however, show up under the DHCP clients section.
The Express is yellow-lit. Sometimes after a setting change it goes green for a minute or so, then back to yellow, reporting a WDS Error ("the AirPort Wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network, but no other AirPort wireless devices were found").
The Airport Express is ending up with an ip address of 169.254.49.198 (an automatic private). It seems it's not getting an ip from the Extreme's DHCP.
Do I have some sort of authentication issue here? Honestly I'm totally baffled.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Would the routers' logs be of any help?
    Thanks

Wait, just did a bit more reading. Am I correct in assuming now that the "Extend a network" option will function as a wireless repeater, with no ethernet connection to the main router required
Yes. This will provide much better wireless performance...and...its much easier to configure.
On your AirPort Extreme, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save settings
On the AirPort Express, open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network (hold down the option key when you click on the selection box if you do not see this setting)
Wireless Network Name = Click on the selection box and name of your AirPort Extreme network should appear
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network
    Confirm Password
    Update to save changes
A good starting location for the Express is a point that is about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from your AirPort Extreme to the area that needs more coverage.
The ethernet port on the Express is also enabled, so you can connect an ethernet device if needed. Post back to let us know how things are working.

  • Will this Airport Extreme work with iPod Touch?

    Hi,
I just received an Apple iPod Touch (32gb, 3rd gen.) for Christmas.
I've always been a PC user, so I don't know much about Apple products.
I'd like to get an inexpensive wireless router to use with it.
I'd like to be able to surf the web, get e-mail, watch Hulu, and listen to
internet radio stations. I use Time-Warner broadband (Road Runner) and I have been able to do all of the above with my cabled PC.
I've been looking at: Airport Extreme Base Station M8799LL/A Model No. A1034. It looks like a flying saucer. Since Road Runner download speeds for my PC are around 2.5mps and this Airport Extreme can handle up to 54mps, is it safe to assume it will work with the iPod Touch?
If anyone has a moment and would jot down their thoughts, I would greatly appreciate it! If it won't work, and you could suggest some inexpensive wireless routers, that would be great as well!
    Thanks!

Yes. I use a similar flying saucer Airport Extreme 802.11g (54mps) base station with my 2g iPod Touch 32GB.
In theory, you should be able to use any 802.11b or 802.11g WiFi base station with the iPod Touch.

  • Airport Extreme interferance with ceiling fan

I have a ceiling fan on the first floor of my home that operates via remote control. My Airport Extreme is upstairs. Whenever I unplug my Airport, the ceiling fan works with no problem. If I have the airport plugged in, and try to operate my ceiling fan, it won't work. I've searched on Apple's site and there is nothing about Airport interfering with anything...only about other things interfering with Airport. Has anyone seen this prob before, and does anyone know a fix for it other than hard wiring my ceiling fan? Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions.
You might try to change the channel on the Airport Network. You might also try to Activate Interference Robustness and see if this makes a difference. If they are both using the same frequency it may not be an easy fix.

  • How do I maintain my Airport Extreme network with my new Comcast wireless gateway?

    Hi all,
I've just signed up Internet access through Xfinity. Today, they sent me a new wireless gateway, which I am willing to use. But I would also like to maintain the network I've currently been using, which is an Airport Extreme hooked up to our DSL modem. Currently, I have a Brother wireless printer, our TiVo, and a Roku streaming stick on this network, as well as all of our Macs and mobile devices. I have been reading about "bridge mode," and selecting this mode once my AE is hooked up through the Ethernet cable to our new wireless gateway seems like the way to go if I'd like to keep the AE network I have now. Then, I can select either the new Xfinity network or the AE network, depending on my need. Is that correct? Will I have to reassign all of these peripherals to the AE network once it's been placed in bridge mode, or will they all be able to find that network automatically once the AE is plugged into the new modem/router? Also, is there a way to connect the AE to the new Xfinity equipment wirelessly, or is it best to connect through Ethernet? I have probably betrayed my ignorance more than a few times in this post, so please be kind and explain it to me like I'm a seven-year-old. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
    -B

Call Comcast and ask them for instructions to configure their "wireless gateway" as a simple modem. Sometimes the terminology they use is "transparent bridging". Have them walk you through it, since all such devices are configured differently. It is usually through a web page but you will need a password to change its settings. You ought to turn off its wireless network also, so ask about that too.
Then, you will have essentially what you have been accustomed to using: an Extreme connected to a box with an Ethernet cable, doing everything it used to do when you had DSL. Your AirPort Extreme is almost certainly a better router than whatever junk Comcast supplies, and to reconfigure it as a bridge would remove all the features that make it so.
You probably won't need to change a thing on your Extreme, other than to unplug it and plug it in again after reconfiguring the "wireless gateway".
