Airport Extreme Lag

Hi I just purchased an airport extreme and am enjoying the experience over my old cheap router. However I have encountered one problem. While playing Wc3 I get constant lag spikes on my unibody mbp. I did not receive these spikes with my older/cheaper router. All other processes with the router are fast including wireless gaming with a ps3. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem and has a fix.

This appears to be the manifestation of wireless interference, and I surmise your guess is correct.
Use iStumbler to correlate these interruptions with the presence of neighboring wireless networks that may be the cause. Try changing your wireless channel from "automatic" to some fixed channel.

When I got this and hooked it up. it was so easy to connect it to the puter and all but apple tv is lagging behind, so slow and had to wait to catch up to be able to watch movie(s) What can I do about it? ( the previous airport extreme had no problem with the apple tv, never lags behind.

    Dear LaPastenague,
many thanks for your ultra response...I have revisited my earlier  thoughtsi / question...I possibly may have not mentioned, the whole intention was to add another device which is in my kitchen and cabling to it could prove time consuming....
Just came back from Maplins with a NetGear universal wireless adaptor for my Win XP machine which will be located in the kitchen.
I was balancing future swap arounds with the AE if my TC [ 2nd Gen] decides to pack up on me.
    Good evening

  • Lag on Airport Extreme

Just replaced my Airport Express with a new Airport Extreme my wife bought me for Father's day...which turned out not to be a good experience.
I unplugged the EXPRESS and plugged in the Extreme. Ran the config tool and configured my network. As soon as it was set up I fired up my main addiction a little demon called World of Warcraft. To my dismay Warcraft was lagging at 800ms, where I usually hover around 100ms. Also I had huge lag spikes that made the game unplayable. While troubleshooting this I noticed that Safari and dashboard are lagging in a similiar manner. A few other facts:
    1) I also have a PC, and a TiVO using the router. The are all on 802.11g
    2) Changed channel on EXTREME and attempted to remove all interference.
    3) Disconnected the TiVO and PC from the networks - didn't help
    4) Called Apple support - Very nice checked settings but nothing helped
    5) Reconnected the Airport Express and I'm back in business running smooth.
Returning my EXTREME to CompUSA in the AM, but would still like to have the EXTREME, the range on my Express is limited (but I do love it now more than ever).
    EXPRESS = Much Love
EXTREME = Not ready for Prime Time
Any ideas? Am I the only one who has seen this?

I just bought the Airport Extreme after ******* over it for months and I have the same problem with World of Warcraft. Lag time is huge----latency goes up to 2000+.
I've pored through these forums and have not found a fix to this problem, which has me coming back to my belief that Apple has devoted so much attention to the iPhone that core products suffer.

  • 10 Second Internet lag on MacBook Pro since Airport extreme CD Install

I have a MacBookPro 2.16Core Duo 17 and an Imac 24 and just purchased the new Airport Router. Hookup was a breeze, however, after installing the CD my MacBook now takes aprox 10 seconds to switch sites when surfing the net. If I connect via a ethernet cable the lag is gone. If I login to Win XP in bootcamp wirelessly, and surf the web there is no lag. I only get it from any distance when I'm on OSX latest version. I tried setting up a new user and booting into that to no avail, same problem. My wife also has two Macs, a MacPro and a PowerBook and they both have no lag wirelessly, it's just my MacBook Pro. One other side note, the lag only occurs when going from one site to another, but once I get to the site I'm at full speed, including downloads. We use Comcast.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.......

I have a Macbook C2D with the N card enabled now and an Airport Extreme (802.11n). I did a speed test the other day and it rated me only at 1.7 MB/sec download. A friend on mine has the new Extreme too and a Core Duo Macbook, so he only has the 54G card, and he pulls 6 MB/sec downloads. We both use Comcast internet as well.
His girlfriend on the other hand has a new Macbook C2D with N enabled, and she only gets the 1.7 MB/sec download like me. My PC which is hooked up through Ethernet cable gets roughly 6 MB/sec download. I think it has something to do with either the firmware for the Airport card in the macs or the firmware for the Airport Extreme. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

  • Macbook Pro Airport extreme cyclical lag spikes

It seems that my Airport is dropping packets and generally lagging in a regular fashion:
I first noticed it while gaming on the macbook, everything was running fine, however every 15-20 seconds or so a massive lag spike would occur, bringing my ping from 100 to 1000ish, and the game was indicating a large amount of packet loss. I don't really use the MacBook to game and I've never had that problem while gaming with other machines on the same network, which leads me to believe it has something to do with the computer/airport.
To try this out a bit more, I had a go at uni today, and found the same problem using the uni's network. Seems to confirm that this has to do with problem on the computer side.
To get something easier to measure, I used the ping command on the MacBook and on a desktop on the same network.
    Results:
MacBook and Desktop have the same latency (same network so normal) however every 15 pings or so on the Macbook there would be a big lag spike lasting usually for 4 pings, with the latency increasing by a factor of 10
ping also reported a packet loss of 2% on the Macbook compared to 0% on the desktop comp.
The desktop is MacPro also with an Airport extreme
    There you have it
Seems to me that there is a problem with the airport card although the fact that the lag is cyclical is a bit weird, but the laptop has an extended warranty so I should be ok if any repairs need to be made
Anyone with any info feel free to share :P

Well I though the problem was gone, but it seems to have resurfaced... kinda.
I previously had an Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express "brick" (both 802.11n) running in WDS. After unplugging the Express and disabling WDS, the problem seems to be gone (I've only seen one recurrence, and it could well have been the fault of the remote end of the transfer.)
So I think it might be a dodgy WDS implementation. I'm a little worried though, given that I saw what looked like a recurrence -- I have a sneaking suspicion that the problem is still there, lurking, waiting to sneak up and surprise me when I least expect it... Still, unless it becomes an issue again, I'll chalk it up to firmware quirks and keep my fingers crossed that it's not an issue with my wireless NIC.

  • Lag over AirPort Extreme

I've been using a Linksys Wireless-G router for several years. I just went out and got an AirPort Extreme in hopes that it would be faster and offer more range, however I'm finding the opposite to be true. Specifically I am having problems running remote programs such as VNC or the Mobile Air Mouse app. The movement seems to be pretty smooth as the mouse is moving, but when I first initiate a mouse movement there is a lag between when I start moving my finger and when the cursor actually moves. This only happens with the AirPort Extreme, and only if it's running more than 10ft from the base station. It works fine on my Linksys router at even further distances. Anyone know why this happens?
I was thinking that as it gets further it may want to try a buffer data more instead of sending it as it comes in? Is there any settings I can play around with that may help?
    Thanks.

Lag isn't a problem because it dosnt play on both devices at once, but if the signal is weak enough it may stutter or stop all together. Can you extend your network with another base station connected by Ethernet.

  • Significant speed lag Airport Extreme v. Ethernet

I wonder if anyone could provide insight on how I can speed up my Airrport connection. When I connect my Powerbook to my Net connection via an Ethernet cable, I get a 5-7Mbps connection speed. Page loads in Safari are almost instantaneous. But when I connect with Airport, there is at least a 5-10 second lag in loading pages (much longer if it is a secure page). And speed tests show the Airport drops about 2Mpbs from my connection, maybe more. Is it possible to tweak my settings for faster Airport speed? Does it sound as though my Airport Extreme is malfunctioning? Are there third party apps out there that might help to remedy this? Thanks in advance.

How many bars do you have under "Signal Level:" within
    "Internet Connect"?
Is your AirPort network 802.11g only?
Do you have 802.11b connected computers?
Do you have neighbouring wireless networks interfering
    with yours?
Is your AirPort Extreme configured to:
    <pre>
    |x| Distribute IP addresses
O Share a single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)
    </pre>
You may improve a wireless network performance through:
    - correct settings (802.11g only, channel choice, no NAT),
    - correct paths use (cross the walls straight forward).

  • How to set up Airport Extreme in a Hotel?

    Hi guys,
i'm living in a hotel for about a month or so and i don't like the hotel's wireless internet (it's at a Hilton Garden Inn) so i decided to buy this Airport Extreme so i could have a better connection. I like to play xbox 360 also and the lag on the games kills me. Any type of help would help me, as i am not tech savvy. What i'm really getting at is that i want to use my Airport extreme as the place where i get my internet from and where i can play xbox on if that makes any sense?

Tesserax has you on the right path.
IF...the hotel is trying to charge you for each device that connects, you could try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address". You'll need to click "ignore" to the warning that you will likely receive about a Double NAT on the network.
If you are playing games online, the console will probably not like the Double NAT setting at all. But, it's worth a try if the Bridge Mode setting wants to charge for each separate device that connects.

  • My Atv2 is  very slow movies and shows take forever to load it plays for a few minutes then pauses again. I thought if was a problem with my wireless router but I replaced it with a new airport extreme and the problem persists. Air play is just as slow.

My Atv2 is very slow with both AirPlay and rented and purchased content I spoke to apple rep and tried the things he suggested but the problem persists. Now it requires more lead time then the lenght of material being viewed. I haves broadband internet connection and airport extreme router so I don't think this should be a problem. Lately every time the unit goes to the screen saver an error message come up saying there was an error while loading content please try again later and you have to all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions? What speed of transfer should I expect using AirPlay ?

I'm having the same issue.  Ay fixes?  Bought ATV today, music streams but videos don't and mirroring doesn't work either.  Start mirror and severe lag then just drops.  Been trying for couple hours. About ready to return it.

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

  • Macbook w/Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a Macbook that I just bought 3 days ago. Like everyone else, I am having the same problem with wireless encryption.
However, when I turn off the WPA and just use WEP, I can connect but it seems to lag. What I mean is everytime I browse, it's almost like my computer needs to "reconnect" with the router. If I stay a a site for more than a couple of minutes the connection kind of goes to sleep. It shows I am connected but it just sits there, sits there, and then connects. When I am on WPA or wired I do not get this.
So, for my actual question, does the Airport Extreme Base Station have issues like this?
On Apple.com, people are giving it glowing reviews. On the net, the reviews are marginal at best.
    Current Setup:
    Macbook
    Linksys WRT54GX4 w/SRX400
    Thanks in advance!

I have several Linksys routers and also an Airport Extreme Base Station. I like the Linksys better. The AEBS has arguably better output power than my Linksys, but in my 1600 square foot house, it doesn't matter.
I also have a Macbook c2duo running OSX 10.4.10, and it drops off the AEBS just as much as any other router.
The downside of the AEBS is that it doesn't have a native web based management system. You've got to use the management tool to deal with the AEBS using SNMP protocol. It'd be nice if you had to manage 100 AEBS, but is a nuisance for home use. I found the latest realase of Airport utility (v5.2) to be very buggy on Windows XP - it killed my PC's abaility to negotiate a DHCP lease until I downgraded back to version 5.1. I ultimately went back to using my WRT54GS. The Linksys has lower throughput, but that only matters for specsmanship. The other thing is that Linksys can do multiple PPTP VPN pass through, but VPN pass through doesn't work on the AEBS unless you use bridge mode and static IPs.
I spent the cash for the AEBS, but in retrospect I would have rather put it towards memory upgrades, etc.

  • Airport Extreme Dual-Band Base Station Is excessively slow

Let me start off by stating this is my first apple support discussion and I have no experience in these forums but rather forums elsewhere.
My Airport Extreme Dual-Band Base Station is completely updated as of DEC. 30, 2012 running version 7.6.1 and I have the latest airport utility, so bare in mind some of the previous fixes I've Read seem unavailable to my setup
Our household has 7-13 of the following devices connected in a 24 hour average:
    5-6 iPhones all running iOS 6 (1, iphone 3gs; 2-3, iPhone 4; 2, iPhone 5)
1 iPad 2 wifi only running iOS 6
2 MacBook Pro 13" early 2012 models one running mountain lion and the other running lion
1 mac mini early 2011 model running mountain lion server and is connected outside the network as a public server
1 Apple TV latest model(1080p) latest updates
    1 LG 47" 1080p 3D TV
    3 blueray players
2 Windows 7 PC one a laptop and the other a desktop
    1 HP All-In-One Printer
    1 AT&T MyCell Antenna
    My problem is as follows:
My network is running rather sluggish. the base station is getting at the very minimum good signal strength to all my devices most of them getting great signal, so I doubt it be the result of range. I've tried messing with the channels and radio settings but have yet to find a correct optimal settings. I've tried searching around these forums as well as in other areas and have not found a suitable solution. my apple TV lags and jitters a lot. I have trouble airplay to it because of what I've read elsewhere which is latency issues. I have no clue how to test latency. I have realized that it isn't a matter of noise in the area because noise doesn't pass 15% and signal is optimal in all areas. of where the devices are. I've noticed connecting my server directly gives me 47Mb/s as compared to the Ethernet connection of 32Mb/s so I am clueless as to a solution. I know that with my old router the wifi speeds were outstanding but that router kept disconnecting wifi clients and then reconnecting them. sadly this is happening again with the apple router. last night my iPad would not stay connected and our network had so much lag that I couldn't even load the youtube app let alone a video. also buffering takes an odd amount of time sometimes 3 minutes. for a 30 second video on youtube. I have no guest network active and I have a wpa2/wpa personal encryption set on the network. I could use some serious help. the people of my household have no problem returning the apple router but I think to urge otherwise. if I could get some help in a solution that would be fantastic.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Blaine Miller

Can you tell us whether your "modem" is a simple device with only one ethernet port or is it a "gateway", which is a combination modem/router with 3-4 ethernet ports?

  • Mac Pro + Airport Extreme = Mouse Cursor Chaos Display Issues When Dragging

Graphic display issues (mouse lag and latency displayed on the screen when dragging an object (photo, window, application, document, etc.) from the top 50% of the screen to the bottom 50% of the screen. Mouse cursor starts to display serious lag and latency and loses ability to stay on the object being dragged anywhere below the 50% horizon line of any display.
Mac Pro (any model 2007 to current 2009 production) with Airport Extreme installed.
    Symptoms:
On any object the mouse cursor selects and then drags from anywhere in the upper portion (50%) of the screen display (no matter the display being used) to the bottom portion (50%) of the screen display, shows great lagging and latency as if the cursor is "hanging on for dear life" or as if the processor were running several intense applications and cursor was not responding.
The mouse cursor fails to stay in concert with the object being dragged anywhere in the lower portion of the screen although is fine in the upper portion of the screen.
Issue only presents itself when selecting and dragging an object from bottom to top or top to bottom of the display.
I have deduced that the issue with this "polarity" (i.e. the 50% horizon level of the screen north and south) is due to some magnetic or waveform interference from the Airport Extreme card and most likely due to its position on the motherboard and/or next the the Intel processor. Also could be enhanced by the Bluetooth card which is also located next to this card.
After checking various Mac Pros (at Apple stores, friends and received via Apple Online store) the common denominator is the Airport Extreme Card. When it is NOT present, no issues are present with display cursor lag; when it IS present, all the above apply.
No one at Apple seems to realize this issue or cares about it. Ditto for Genius Bar Apple Employees; seems to be a mystery on par with the Bermuda Triangle (which ironically is also magnetically-polarity related.)
Still waiting for a Apple Product Engineer to contact me and have 3 tickets open with Apple from 3 different Mac Pros on this. Problem first noticed May 2009 although first generation Mac Pro from 2007 also suffered same issues and just now putting the puzzle together on this relationship.
Any others out there notice this as well? Check it out if you have a Mac Pro and Airport Extreme Card installed inside of it.

I also have the same exact problem. I have a i5 iMac Mid 2011 with an upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite connected to an external display. I like you never had this issue with Mavericks. Zoom is so painfully slow now that I had to disable it. My iMac has 12 GB of RAM and even with no apps opened, zoom is killer slow.. makes me want to punch a wall-kinda slow.
I think it's clear to say that something is up with 10.10.. some bug.
    Apple please fix us zoomers

  • Drobo FS, Airport Extreme, and iTunes way too slow

I have a Drobo FS, that contains my >600gb iTunes library, plugged in to my Airport Extreme.  I access the Airport wirelesly via a MBP and was hoping to play back music and video wirelessly and to sync my iPhone.  Unfortunately, iTunes is lagging terribly and I can not sync music to my phone.  I had a 3tb My Book attached via usb to the Airport previously without problem.  Is anyone else trying this or could offer help?  It would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

"What you can do is watch your process list to see if other processes are causing itunes to slow down. Also if you have a bunch of processes running that don't need to be then close them down to see if the performance increases." no other processes are taking any noticeable CPU time, and none over 10%, EXCEPT iTunes. Just scrolling in my library causes the CPU to max out at 100%. Try it yourself. Put a CPU indicator in your system tray. Also, downloading podcasts pegs the CPU really high. Also, iTunes misses keystrokes (probably because it hogs all the CPU), and it is slow to respond to mouse clicks. Very annoying! Just lame programming - that's all. No conflicts on my system, no other problem programs running on my system. Just one badly written application called iTunes.

  • Best itunes HD format on airport extreme wireless for macbook air unibody

    Hi,
I am setting up a system for a disabled person and just bought a new airport extreme and the new mac book air unibody to begin set up of a varied collection of ripping CDs, downloading mp3s/podcasts, video and various other sources that will rise over 100 gigs. Here are several particulars about optimizing hard drives for wireless itunes to outline needs and concerns.
    1. Is it practical or economical to use the airport extreme Gigabit Ethernet? If so, please recommend some drives/devices. The drobo fs is out of my price range for $600+ without hard drives.
    http://www.drobo.com/products/drobo-fs.php
    2. Will I have lag or performance issues using the usb 2.0 port with a usb2.0 hub and a usb 2.0 drive?
    3. Is a a fast RAID 0 (striped) array WD hooked up to usb 2.0 worth price and trouble?
    http://www.macworld.com/reviews/product/405266/review/mybook_studio_edition1tb.html
    4. Will itunes run better if it has a dedicated drive? We also need to store other large media files on this wireless hard drive setup.
    Thanks

    Don,
I keep my iTunes library on a separate drive and I've never had a problem sharing media from it via Airport Express with other macs in my wireless netwrok. The drive I use is a Wester Digital "My Book" - it is a raid 1 set-up connected to my imac via Firewire connection. I can't remember but I think I picked it up at NewEgg or Amazon over a year ago for around $200. You can probably find better, bigger and faster drives now for the same price or less at these places or at One World Computing as well. Hope that answered your question.
