Airport Extreme LAN address limitations

On our branch office networks, we use different subnets from the 10.x.x.x private networking address space. Most begin with 10.1 or 10.10.
But so far as we can tell, Apple, unlike every single other low-end router vendor, has arbitrarily decided that the AirPort Extreme shall only provide addresses that begin with 10.0.

We are aware of those other ranges, but that does not resolve the problem that a horribly arbitrary limitation that Apple ALONE has imposed on the use of the 10.x.x.x address space is a PROBLEM.
We would have to
1. renumber every last network from scratch to accommodate a limitation that ONLY APPLE imposes.
2. Turn off the router functionality in the AirPort Extreme, dumbing it down into a mere wireless access point.
3. Send the AirPort Extreme back to the supplier.
We have opted for #3-- just send this stupid thing back and never order one again until we can confirm that Apple has corrected these silly design flaws.

  • Shared Printer Airport Extreme & LAN

I have a USB Canon i965 connected via USB to my imacG4. This is on a LAN that also has the Airport Extreme base station connected to it. Also on the LAN is a windowsXP machine.
Connected to the Airport is an imacG5.
I have successfully shared the printer with the XP machine using Bonjour for windows. The imacG5 (using the wireless connection)can see the G4 (verify the address etc during printer setup)but I have been unable to print from the imacG5 it says printing then "Job Stopped".
Does bonjour work with wireless connections or am I trying to do something that's impossible ?

  • Airport Extreme IP address problem

Until about three weeks ago I had no trouble with my Airport network. All three computers (with my iMac as the base station) had no problem connecting to the internet. Then, with no changes, my network began to slow down. I went through all of the basic trouble shooting and contacted Charter, our cable modem service provider.
After 90 minuites of telephone trouble shooting, nothing was resolved. They sent a techie out the following week, who immediately told us that they were not trained in Mac format, installed a new cable modem (said the other was out of date), and still no solution. After a few minutes of updating through the Airport Extreme's utility, we had brief service. Then, we lost all service through Airport, and have extremely slow service without it, even though we are subscribed at the highest speed service (5Mb) we have available. The base station's IP address is not showing up as 1. HELP!

    Try the following:
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

  • Pc will not work with Airport Extreme LAN connection

I have setup my Aiport Extreme Base Station and my Mac and phone work just fine with the setup. However, I connected a PC directly to one of the LAN ports on the back, and the PC doesn't see the network. Above the port the light is blinking green. Any thoughts?

Is the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) the only router in your current network configuration? That is, it is connected directly by Ethernet to your Broadband Internet modem? ... or to another router between the AEBS and the modem?
When connected by Ethernet to the AEBS, can the PC "see" the Mac or vice-versa?

  • "bufferbloat", Airport Extreme, and bandwidth limiting?

I have a somewhat complex network setup at home.  I have a Cable connection with 20Mbps down, 2 Mbps up, my own Motorola SB6141 cable modem upstream.  Plugged into that, I have a recent model Airport Extreme (802.11ac), and an older Airport Extreme set up with a roaming network.  The primary clients are recent vintage macbooks, iOS devices, with a smattering of other connected devices (DVR, windows, Synology NAS, etc.
The problem that I'm running into is that network connectivity has lots of issues  if I run a large upload that saturates the outbound connection, e.g. with Dropbox or another online backup tool like Arq.  When that happens, inbound traffic gets super spotty, and things like Netflix become unusable.  peer-to-peer within the network continues to work fine.
As near as I can tell, these are the classic symptoms of "bufferbloat" and from what I've read, the solution to the problem would be to introduce an outbound bandwidth limit (say at 1.98 Mbps) at the first outbound bottleneck, in this case, at the Airport Extreme (ac) connected to the cable modem.
Is there any way to do this?  I couldn't find any kind of bandwidth limitation mechanism in the Airport Utility.

Is there any way to do this?
Sorry, but no. The AirPorts are all very simple, bare bones routers with a minimum of functionality.

  • Latest model Airport Extreme: LAN NAS vs usb drive

new  model AEBS: LAN NAS drive Vs usb connection.
Is there an actual (vs theoretical) speed advantage in using a NAS drive connected to one of the LAN ports, vs just connecting via the usb on the latest AEBS?  I read the usb performance is much better on the new model: 192 Mbps read and 172 write via usb as per cnet test:

    here's what Tesserax posted recently:
    Possibly.

    +o Gigabit Ethernet: 3 MB/s (write) / 6 MB/s (read)+

  • AirPort Extreme Multicast Rate limitation

I am currently using an iMac G5 which has an AirPort Extreme card with firmware 405.1. I have an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) base station that is running firmware version 7.1.1. My Radio Mode is "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)." My wireless security is WPA/WPA2 personal.
When I go into my Wireless Options, my Country is United States, my Transmit power is 100% and my WPA Group Key Timeout is one day. It is not a closed network and I do not use interference robustness.
When I open the options for "Multicast Rate," the highest available rate is 11 Mbps. From what I understand, wireless G is capable of 56 Mbps (and that is how Apple advertised the Airport Extreme card when I bought it). Why is my multicast rate limited to 11 Mbps and how can I raise it to 56 Mbps?

I've always been a little foggy on multicast. The apple support article seems to imply that it only matters when "certain audio and video streaming servers or other applications with multicast capability" are on your network. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Airport/5.0/en/ap2087.html)
What if you don't have one of these multicast servers or applications on your network? Does the multicast rate have any effect on your network performance?
My understanding is that the answer is YES - regardless of whether you have one of these multicast servers or not, setting your multicast rate to X means that only airport clients that can achieve a speed of X or greater will be able to connect to the base station. If you set it to 1, then you will extend the range of your network. But sometimes, in a WDS, where multiple base stations on the same channel overlap, I find that my clients have trouble deciding which base station to connect to. So actually, it works better to set the rate a little higher. But I am never quite sure if this is true, or if its just my imagination.
At any rate (no pun intended) , I'm still foggy on multicast and would really appreciate if someone out there could clear things up or direct me to a link that explains what i need to know (starting with an actual definition of multicast).
    Thanks

  • Setting up AirPort Extreme/Router Address?

During setup, I am getting an "invalid IP address" error message. I have checked with my ISP and they have verified my IP Address, Subnet Mask, and DNS Server Numbers. They indicated that they do not have [use] a Router Address, and that I must obtain it from Apple. When I attempt to populate the Router Address field with the Ethernet number found on the bottom of the Extreme unit, it is not recognized (accepted) because it contains letters, not just numbers. This problem appears to be the only thing preventing me from successfully completing the set up. What is a Router Address anyway?
A solution to my problem will be much appreciated. I see from the volumes of questions being posted about AirPort Extreme setup that many are not simply taking it out of the box and setting it up successfully in "about five minutes" as advertised.
    Thank you,
    Dr. Eric

I tried what you suggested, and many other things. None solved my problem. However, what did solve my problem was downloading the latest (posted Jan 25) Airport Extreme update. Once I did that, I opened the AirpPort Utility, went through the setup process, and I now have an internet connection. When I went through setup, a router address was automatically assigned.
    Thanks for you input.

  • Setting Airport Extreme LAN IP

How can I change the LAN ip of my Airport extreme?
    I have multiple Airport extremes.
I need NAT port forwarding on both. (these support externally available servers)  I need the routing function on both routers.  DHCP must be avail on at least one.
I have static IP's from my ISP for both routers  I have already configured the WAN info for both.  They work, but only if one is plugged in. because I can't change the LAN IP
Both routers MUST be on the SAME network.
The first one automatically assigned itself 192.168..1.1  I need to assign the second to 192.168.1.2
I wire the WAN ports to the ISP for each router.
I connect both routers via ethernet on the LAN ports to the network.
Basically, one can be a AP, but I still need it to do port forwarding, which means it needs to be NAT (at least) so bridge mode won't work.
have updated the firmware on both, but see no place to specify the LAN IP, other than using a different network 192.x.x.x vs 10.x.x.x which is useless, because I need them to be on the same network.

i just set mine up right now...
open airport utility...manual...internet...DHCP... then change to the IP you like. i set mine to be DHCP range of 192.168.0.100 to .150 and AE set itself to 192.168.0.1

  • Airport Extreme - IP Address won't show up

Okay, not too savvy on networking so bear with my inept relay of info. Worked through setting up the AEBS on my PC. Ran into a problem with the blinking amber light. Discovered which boxes to check to make it green. My system tray registers a positive connection but I cannot get on the internet. I believe the problem lies with not acquiring an IP address. Tech support was not particularly helpful as I am in Germany and the folks I spoke with were in the US. The Germans want .14 Euros cents per minute (last resort). There must be some combination of checked boxes and drop-down choices I'm not getting right.

Okay, it's fixed. Y'all are gonna get a good laugh out of this.
The little box I thought was a modem was actually just a splitter. In removing the Netgear router out of the picture, I also took away the modem functionality with it. Apparently, the Airport Extreme does NOT have modem capability. I had to call the phone company hotline to figure that out. So I went to the phone company's store and sweet-talked a modem out of them by trading in my unreliable Netgear router, and - whattya know - the Airport Extreme works! And very well I might add. Also added my PC without any problems.

  • Airport extreme ip address problems

    hi,
thank to tesserax i finally managed to install an extended network with both an airport expreme (n) as base station and airport express (b/g) as remote station. before that i had a airport express network only.
but previously i had a now up-to-date event/contact server working under ip 10.0.0.1 and under my old configuration - with the airport express only - this was ok as the airport express was taking ip 10.0.0.20.
now under the new situation the airport extreme takes the ip 10.0.0.1.
so is there any possibility to change this to > ip 10.0.0.20 as i have to reset the now up-to-date event/contact server after each start up ?
    tia mike

I have the extreme plugged into an ethernet wall port in my college bedroom which connects us to our university's college ISP the BigAir Group
First, I am assuming that you have already spoken with your college's IT department and that they allow you to create a wireless network off of their network ... correct? The reason I'm asking is because most schools do NOT allow this ... so it would be more of an exception than a rule if your school does ... and, if they do, great! You may want to ask them for advice on how to properly configure your AirPort to work with their network.
Upon connecting to the network via the ethernet port we are required to login to our account which stays active until we sign out
This sounds like your college has implemented a RADIUS server to authenticate users before they can access their network. Your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can provide your user credentials to this type of server and this would be configurable via the AirPort Utility. However, to do so properly, would require that you can get the information from the IT folks to properly set it up. I have provided a screenshot of where this information would be entered in the AirPort Utility.

  • AirPort Extreme LAN IP address

    Hi
Is it possible to set the LAN IP address of an AE (Simultaneous Dual-Band II)?
As the AE is my gateway I would prefer to have it's LAN IP address set to 192.168.x.254 rather than 192.168.x.1 which seems to be the default.
    Cheers
    Smudger

    Hi William
I don't see any way to do that in Airport Utility either.
The reason I want to do it is that I'm a network admin from way back (as the saying goes "when Pontius was a pilot") and .254 has always been the default for gateways. When I changed to the AE I had to edit a bunch of config files to cater for the gateway selecting .1 instead!
If it can't be done, it can't be done. But I think it's a shortcoming of the unit.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Airport extreme ip address

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2442505?start=0&tstart=0
In this archived thread, they mention that you can change the schema of the IP address to be 10.0.x.1, 172. etc. or 192.168.x.1
    How do I do this?
Essentially, changing the third part of the ip address helps me create subnets and thus avoid ip address conflicts.
    --Sam

In this archived thread, they mention that you can change the schema of the IP address to be 10.0.x.1, 172. etc. or 192.168.x.1
You can control the Private IP address range, provided by the DHCP server service built-in the AirPorts by using the AirPort Utility. ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup > Internet > DHCP tab, and then, adjusting the DHCP Beginning and Ending Address(es)

  • Adding a pc to an airport extreme lan

I need to connect a pc to my macs airport network (right now it has a tower and a laptop on it)
The Airport is the flying triangle with the silver metalic Apple logo.
I bought a belkin wireless G adapter (model F5D7050 )the pc sees my airport. It knows its a secure network (I encrypted the airport when I set it up). I can't figure out how to unencrypt the network to see if I am putting the wrong password in (I know I am not but its a good place to start)... problem 1, unencrypt the network.
When I try to connect the pc I get an error message that says the network may not be available, even though it still sees it and has almost a full signal strength.
Belkins phone support said, as soon as I said the word "Apple Airport" you will have to call airport and let them to tell you how to change the settings.

    Where are you connecting from?
