Airport extreme locks up then needs tobe restarted.

My Airport extreme locks up and then has to be powered down and restarted before it will work again.

Just a few more details might help forum members identify or understand your issue better....
Are your computers / devcies all connected using Ethernet?
All connected using wireless?
Or, are some connecting using Ethernet and others wireless?
Does the AirPort Extreme work OK for awhile, then lock up, or does it lock up immediately when you power back up?
Was the Extreme working OK in the past and now is having problems, or is this a new device that you are trying to configure?
What type of modem are you using to connect to the AirPort Extreme?

My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet.  My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme.  Do I need the modem?  Is the ethernet route less efficent that going throught the internet connection?  If I don't need the westel modem; how do I make the dsl conection to the pone port in the wall?  Thanks for help on this!

Ok, so are you saying that your Internet is or isn't working?  Does it work if you plug your computer directly into your computer and bypass the router (make sure you power cycle the modem when you do this)?  If it is working this way, then a new modem isn't going to solve a problem with your Internet not working.  If it is going slow (try running a speedtest) then you need to call your phone company to have them take a look at why your Internet is slow.  If it runs fine this way and then slows back down when you go back through your router there is something else going on.  Try unplugging both the modem and the router, let the modem fully sign back in and connect to the Internet, after it gets signed in, plug your router in, and then after it boots up fully, try running the speedtest again...See if that helps any?  Sometimes it's just an IP conflict that happens when the dynamic IP that is assigned by your Internet Service Provider changes and the change doesn't flow smoothly.

  • Can any printer connect to the airport extreme or do i need a special printer?

can any printer connect to the airport extreme or do i need a special printer?

There are rare exceptions but any USB printer should be able to use its USB printer port. Only the print function of all-in-one a/k/a "multifunction" devices will work with the USB port though.
The Extreme will support any networked (wired or wireless) printer or multifunction device.

  • What Airport Extreme card do I need ?

Hello Group....here is the problem....my youngest boy just managed to acquire a eMac computer.
    It is a G4-1GHZ/512MB/40 G HD  and has a HD/DVD/CD - RW/56K MDM
The serial number of the eMac is G03500STPP1 (This serial number I can not relate to any searches on the internet)
I am sure it requires a Airport Extreme Card since it does have  ATI Graphics and also because I just now received an AirPort card I had ordered a week ago and found it does not fit and the PIN configuration in the slot the card goes into does not seem to match this card I purchased.....My mistake....
Anyway....I know it is a AirPort Extreme card I need but which one ?
I have looked on eBay but there seems to be several different kinds......does anyone have any idea ?
Also,if anyone has any answers to this, could yo ualso include any links to where I might find it as well ? That would be helpful for further reference should I have any trouble with this eMac.
    Thank you for your time.

Hello Group....Just got the AirPort Extreme Card in the mail and I put it into the eMac and in 10 minutes I was surfing the net.
Just incase others might be reading this with the same question about cards.....
The eMac in question is a eMac (ATI Graphics)(CTO) built in 2003
The Airport Express Card is Model A1026
If you open DVD cover and then remove the black plastic plate held there with 2 screws, you can look back into the slot that the card slides into.If you see that the slot is in two sections, that is there is a gap dividing the row of pins.....that is to accommodate the AirPort Extreme stab end as in the picture above.
If the slot you have is continues then you need a regular AirPort Card.
Oh ya....the eMac had been wiped clean and the original OS was installed so after installing the AirPort Extreme card we did about 2 hours of updates.......LOL.
Thank again to all that replied.

  • Airport Extreme locks up when Macbook Pro tries to reconnect

After a few minutes of operation my MacBook Pro loses connection with the Airport Extreme. When doing this it locks up the AE base station. This base station works fine with the other mac and windows products that I use with it. This only happens when the MacBook Pro drops connection, or it is dropping connection due to the fact that the MacBook Pro is having problems.
Again, this does not happen if I do not turn on my MacBook Pro. It runs fine weeks at a time. All my products have the latest firmware updates from Apple.

This is a very frequent problem for me that first began more than a year ago. For a while it seemed to settle, but is now a daily affair after my MacBook Pro goes to sleep overnight. It used to respond to a restart, but that is no longer true. My solution is just to retry repeatedly: eventually a connection is made, but it can take several minutes to work. I use WPA security. The recent Airport software update to 5.5.1 made no difference. I have not tried to update to 10.6.3 yet.

  • What replacement Airport Extreme Card do I need for Macbook Pro 8.2?

It looks like my Airport Extreme Card has failed, although the Blue Tooth  is fine. I'm assuming that I need to buy a replacement but am struggling to find what I need. I have a Macbook Pro 15" early 2011 i7 2.2ghz so just need to know what cards are compatable.
It's been a slow failiure, over a couple of months but now it is not even recognised in the System profiler. I am happy to open the case and install a new card, I just need t know what will work. Is there a better card than the original out there, or even an upgrade? I've upgraded the Ram and had to change the HHD already, so as a machine it's starting to resemble the Philosopher's Axe...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Ralph,
    Thanks for the speedy response!
I"ve had the case open when I changed the HHD and Ram, and can seen where the card slots in. It's held by a supporting arm which lifts up when disconected from the Logic Board. it's weird looking inside, as you can see there are many of the same componants I've seen in other laptops. It is a tidier build though. I'm confident that if I detach the 3 antener conectors and remove the retainer screws a new card will fit back in.
The Genius Bars here in London are highly over subscribed, and I don't think I have the time or budget for that.
I'll keep plugging away, and see what happens. I'm almost getting used to being tethered to the Ethernet cable. I've only tripped over it 20 times a day!
    Take it easy.

  • AirPort Extreme w/ USB Disk -  Need to remove old configuration

I have an external 500Gig USB drive that I have connected to my AirPort Extreme which was formatted FAT32. The drive works fine and I had no problems setting up the AirPort to use it as a shared drive. However, I realized that having the drive as FAT32 will cause me issues if I want to transfer a file bigger than 4Gig.
To correct this I unplugged the drive and reformatted it into 2 partitions. The first one is a 100Gig NTFS partition and the other is a 400Gig HFS+ Journaled partition. If I plug the USB device directly into a PC or Mac, it recognizes and mounts both partitions properly. Using Disk Utility on the Mac it correctly labels and shows me the partitions with their formats. However, when I plug the drive back into the AirPort Extreme, it does not recognize the new partitions and shows me the old configuration of the drive as a 500Gig FAT32 drive.
Is there some way I can remove the old drive configuration from the AirPort without having to reset the AirPort back to factory settings and reconfigure the whole router? I am thinking that if I can do this it will rescan the external drive and see that the partitions have changed allowing me to reconfigure it in the AirPort.

We've seen a number of posts on the forum about Iomega drives not being recognized. Might that be what you are using?
By power cycle, I mean that you power down the entire network for a few minutes. Then start the modem first and let it run for a few minutes, then start the AirPort Extreme if that is attached to your modem and let it run a few minutes, then start the attached drive and let it run a few minutes and finally your computers.
Otherwise, if you don't have any valuable data on the drive, I would reformat it in Mac OS Entended (Journaled). To do this, you must attach the drive to your computer and open Disk Utility. It's located Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.

  • New Airport Extreme is "slower" then the old one

Hi to all, today I bought the new (faster) Airport Extreme BaseStation. After Installation with the Apple standard settings I have a lower date rate (between 15 to 45 MBps) then I had with the old one (between 52 and almost 100MBps). The position of My MacBookPro and the new Airport Extreme BaseStation is exactly the same then I had with My old one. Why does that happen?

Hi! Yes if you go to Wireless then Options, check the box for a different SSID name for the 5 GHz band. Then make sure your mbp connects to the 5 GHz band and not the 2,4. Though there is some big issues with the new AEBS. Please send feedback to Apple about the speed difference at http://www.apple.com/feedback/airportextreme.html
    Hope it works out!

  • Airport Extreme Locks up when Android Connects

Our Airport Extreme works great with our two PBs and Imac, and three iphones.
However, once a week a friend comes over with his Samsung Honeycomb Tablet (Android) and logs into our wireless.Shortly after he does this (twice now) we lose conection on our laptops and phones. It doesn't seem to infect them all immediately, sometimes they work fine for a bit, then they can't connect.
Only rebooting the Airport itself seems to fix the problem.
    Any clues?

If you dont know what stelth means, you've probably not set it.
just sneaked a bit around in Android forums...
I seems, that the Droid may have a problem with 5GHz 802.11n wireless as well as causing problems when it use the "Just join a found network" option.
Instead of letting the Droid find the network your friend should use "add new network" and enter network name/password manually.
    Cheers - Lupunus

  • If i were to start from scratch (internet wise), is the AirPort Extreme / Express all I need to get online?

    Considering buying

You will need a modem and broadband Internet service from a provider,  since the AirPorts do not have a built in modem.

  • Airport Utility CANNOT find Airport extreme?  HELP!

I just bought a Airport Extreme (802.11n) and my Airport is just blinking amber... When I launch Airport Utility and scan for a wireless device it comes up with nothing. I cannot get past this step to setting up the Airport Extreme. Any help would be appreciated!
What am i doing wrong? I have a feeling the Airport is not sending a signal out... is it defective? HELP.......

    Welcome to the discussions!
The AirPort Extreme broadcasts a default wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx, where the 'x" can be either a number or letter. Look for this network and log onto it (there is no password required). Then open AirPort Utility to see if it can communicate with the AirPort Extreme.
You may need to restart both the AirPort Extreme and your computer.
An alternate (and probably better) method is to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to establish a direct connection. You can disconnect the ethernet cable when you have the AirPort Extreme configured.

  • Deleted files from USB Disk attached to Airport Extreme

I deleted files from a USB disk attached to my airport extreme.  I then needed to recover them  but they are not in the trash can...how can I find and restore these files?  I have not emptied the trash.  I am just looking in the trash in my bar at the bottom bar.  I got the message that asked if I wanted to send them to the trash and I said yes...help, I need the files!
    Thanks,
    Josh

Unfortunately, as the message clearly states.....the file(s) will be deleted immediately....not moved to the trash.
If you want to experiment, a utility like Disk Warrior might be able to salvage some of the data on the disk....IF....you have not made any changes on the disk since you deleted the files.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
But, it will be much quicker to simply restore a copy of the file(s) from your backups.

  • Does my modem need to support 5G in order to make use of the 5G characteristics of my AirPort Extreme?

    Hi,
I have a Fritzbox 7360 router which does not support 5G. I have also bought an Airport Extreme and uses this in bridge modus. So the Fritzbox only serves as a modem. The modem does not support 5G however, do I need to have different type of modem in order to optimally make use of the 5G characteristics of the Airport Extreme?
    Thanks

do I need to have different type of modem in order to optimally make use of the 5G characteristics of the Airport Extreme?
    No

  • How to set up Airport Extreme with Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A for the first time for WIRELESS.

How to set up Airport Extreme with Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A for the first time for WIRELESS.
When Charter Tech goes to your site, have them connect the modem up, but do not connect the modem to your iMAC or MacBook Pro.  What you want to do is connect the Airport Extreme to the iMac or MacBook Pro first with the Ethernet Cable. You have to do this to configure via Airport Utility to set up the Base Station Name & Base Station Password.
You will then create/configure a Wireless Network, create your Wireless Password that will be entered on each of your Devices, example, Apple Tv, your iPhone, etc., you want to allow access to your Wireless Network you are creating.
Wireless Security will be -> WPA/WPA2 personal or just WPA2
Enter the Wireless Password you want
Verify the Wireless Password (enter it again)
After it is created you will see it on the Airport Utility window with the name you created for it and to the left, will be a Dot (circle that will be yellow).
Next you then want to unplug the power to the Airport Extreme, and then take the end of the Ethernet cable you unplugged from the iMac or Lap top MacBook Pro and connect it to the back of the Modem.
Next unplug the power cord from the modem and wait about 5 minutes, then plug the power back into the Arris Modem and wait until all lights come back on the modem wait
about 5 minutes, then plug the power cord back to the Airport Extreme and you will see it the light blinking yellow.  Wait about 5 to 10 minutes, during this time Restart you IMAC or MacBook Pro, and once it is back up click on the Airport Utility and you should see on the Airport Utility screen.
For INTERNET to the left the light should be green and you should see the Airport Extreme also appear and the light to the left on the screen should also be green.  If they are, you then should be able to click on the Wireless Symbol on top of bar of the screen and click to select the Wireless Network Name you created.
If you Do Not See the light (Icon) next to INTERNET turn Green, or if you see the Internet Light Green, but the Light (Icon) next to the Airport Extreme is yellow, unplug the power again to the modem and unplug the power again to the Airport extreme and wait about 15 minutes or up to 30 minutes. Then plug the power cord back to the modem wait till all the lights light up then, plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme and Restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro.
The Airport Extreme light should change from yellow to green. Open up the Airport Utility to see what the indicators are showing they should both be green.  Again select Wireless network you created under the Wireless Icon on the top right of the screen. Open Safari and see if you are able to Route to a web page or the apple site should appear.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR AIRPORT EXTREME WAS PREVIOUSLY SET UP FOR USE WITH ANOTHER CARRIERS ROUTER OR MODEM.
NOTE:  If you already had your Airport Extreme connected for example, I previously had ATT Uverse and the Airport Extreme was connected to the Wireless Router Model 3801HGV, I disabled the Uverse Wireless and used the Airport Extreme for the Wireless signal in bridge mode, as the Airport extreme Signal is much stronger than the Uverse router, and I was able to obtain a Wireless signal with the Airport Extreme way much better with no signal loss which was very very frustrating with the Uverse router.
Anyhow if you had it hooked up like this, now that you will be using it with the Charter ARRIS Modem TM902A, you will need to reset the Airport Extreme to clear out the old data it has in memory, with the previous set up otherwise it will not work. Trust me I spent 6 hours trying to make it work reading all Apple Support Community questions and answers relating to this type issue/problem others have been having trying to get their set up working. I tried all the tips, and I finally decided just to see if by chance I would be able to connect with someone with Charter Tech support who might be familiar with Apple to be able to assist me and by luck I did.  He told me why it was not working and was all due the previous configuration with the ATT Uverse router was still in memory with the Airport Extreme. Finally it was 10:30 PM when I decided to call Charter Tech Support and I had been working on this since 3:00 pm pacific. I did not call them earlier as all the post I read said they never received any good help from Charter. After calling them I finished up by 11:00 PM and was able to finally connect Apple Tv, iMac, iPhones and Macbook Pro. We love our Apple Product and Happy all is connected with the new
Internet Provider Charter. I must say the speed is way way much better than it ever was with AT&T Uverse.
THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO:
First you will need to unplug the Airport Extreme, then by taking the tip of a pen or paper clip end you need to push the reset button on the back of the Airport Extreme and hold it
down and at the same time plug the power cord back into the Airport Extreme count to 5 or 10 then release the reset button. Then once he light in front of the Airport Extreme stops blinking you need to plug the Ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to your iMAC or Macbook Pro, and restart which ever one you have, then open the Airport Utility once it is back up.  If you see airport extreme pop up with the old network name or it shows and yellow triangle click on the Airport Extreme ICON it will not let you configure it but will ask if you want to get rid of it or remove and just do it.  Then Again restart your iMAC or MacBook Pro, open up Airport Utility again, and on the top left you should see under “Other Airport Base Stations” the MAC ID for the Airport Extreme.

I just got a Charter Modem. Model TM822. While I was moving, my Airport Extreme was still at my old place.
I have a Linksys WRT320N I used for the initial Charter setup.
I can get my Airport to work here, but the Internet light on the Modem flashes Yellow.
Hasn't caused any issues so far but one thing I did notice.
On the Linksys there were 3 DNS servers listed.
The Airport Extreme only lists 2 and i don't see where I could add another, only change whats already there.
I tried everything above, but light on modem still flashes yellow.
I have the technicians cell phone. Told me "that shouldn't be" and gave the same advice listed above.
I'll break down and call Charter one day, see if it's on their end. NSA tracking may need a reset LMAO.
