AirPort Extreme loses ethernet connection

I am running about 20 or so base stations in my school and every once in a while, a couple of the stations loose their ethernet connection. They are still broadcasting wirelessly, but they disconnect from the network. The stations are running fw5.6 and my clients are running 10.4.2 or WinXP SP2. The only way to fix the problem is to power cycle the base station. I also have the older graphite stations which work fine, which leads me to think that this is not a network issue.
Any suggestions?

I also lose ethernet connection. Sometimes once a day, other times 10 times per day. The other day I was so frustrated about losing my connection that I just walked away from it, without cycling power. When I came back (about 30 minutes later) from my cooling-off period, I found that the connection was back. So, with my AirPort Extreme, cycling power is not the only solution. It's not an acceptable solution though.
I was wondering what you mean by your statement, "They are still broadcasting wirelessly, but they disconnect from the network." I'm relatively new to this stuff and this baffled me, which isn't hard to do.

  • Airport Extreme has ethernet connection but no internet connection

I am having an airport extreme connectivity issue that has yet to be resolved. For me, the cable modem (a Motorola Surfboard) recognizes the airport extreme (I have the round white saucer one) but the airport extreme, despite giving me an 'ethernet' connection (that also shows up as full signal strength in the menu bar), cannot connect to the internet, no matter what I do.
Seems the airport extreme is not recognizing/picking up the ip address of my computers.
The airport base station is recognized by airport utility, has an ID and I can name it as well as create a network, but no matter what I do and despite being told that I am connected to the internet via ethernet, there is no connection to the internet.
I have a dual G5 desktop hooked up directly to the cable modem and am trying to wirelessly connect a new macbook pro intel core dual.
Each computer can access the internet when directly hooked up to the cable modem, but neither can access the internet wirelessly.. so it's not the computers, nor is is the cable modem. I called Time Warner, all is fine with that connection.
Both my ethernet cables work (checked them both). So it must be the airport extreme.
I was on the phone with apple tech support for 5 hours yesterday!!! They made me run through all the things I did myself. From trying to reconfigure and rename the airport to completely resetting the airport. None of this worked.
And right now I'm on hold for a multi-media product specialist with apple tech support.
But they didn't do a thing for me yesterday so I'm hoping someone on here may know what to do.
I think I need a new airport extreme. Anyone???

    Hello Laura, Jim, Richard...
Now my internet connexion work on my AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Station)... It seems that (for me) DHCP was the problem...
DHCP server (10.0.1.x) activated on the AEBS conflict with DHCP server (192.168.1.x) activated on the modem.
Before the AEBS 5.7 update (i made yesterday) this configuration with two DHCP servers with different IP addresses worked well... but not now...!
So, i disabled the Modem DHCP server. I rebooted the modem and the AEBS and success, my internet connexion worked again...
I used manual setup with fixed IP, submask, DNS to connect the AEBS to the modem...
I hope this could help you, Laura and Jim...
Sorry for mistakes, i'm french mac user

  • Airport extreme loses internet connection all the time with imac and macbook pro

I keep losing the internet connection with airport extreme on my imac and macbook pro but NOT with my pc

Ok, so when you say you lose internet connection, is it disconnecting from your wireless network so there are no bars?
And are there usually full bars?

  • Connect to internet via airport extreme via ethernet cable and no airport c

I just bought a MacBook with Airport Extreme, got it set up today and it works great, got online, etc. However, I have an iMac with no airport card. I can't figure out how to get both computers hooked up on the internet at the same time. The MacBook works only when the ethernet cable in in the LAN slot on the Extreme but won't work through the WAN slot. I have tried hooking up both ethernet cables into the Extreme, just the iMac, and nothing works. I don't need to connect wirelessly through the iMac so I don't want to buy an Airport card if I don't need one. I just don't want to plug and unplug the ethernet cable everytime I want to use the MacBook or the iMac. My modem from Verizon only has one ethernet slot. Any ideas?

You mean Airport Extreme Base station?
Here's what you need to do:
    1. Disconnect your Verizon Modem & Airport Extreme
    2. Connect the ethernet cable from the Verizon modem to the WAN of the AE
    3. Connect another ethernet cable from the LAN port of the AE to your iMac
    4. Turn on Verizon Modem
    5. Once all lights on the modem have turned on, turn on the Airport Extreme
    6. On your iMac click on Applications --> Utilities --> Airport Admin Utility
    7. Setup a Wireless network using this or the Airport Setup Assistant, located in the same Utility folder.
    8. After you have created the wireless network, connect to it on your macbook
If for some strange reason you still can't figure it out, refer to the product manual or check:

  • Connecting 2 Airport Extremes via ethernet if my intent is to improve wireless signal in a different area of my home

Connect the second Airport Extreme via ethernet, all is good.  However, question is; do I use the same Wireless name as main Airport Extreme or do I need to name is differently? And if differently, how do devices connect to the strongest signal?

Yes. If you want your wireless devices to "see" only one wireless network, specify the exact same wireless network name, security and password for the second Extreme.
And if differently, how do devices connect to the strongest signal?
If you choose to specify different names, and your Network Preferences are configured to not "ask to join new networks" your Mac will automatically switch from one to the other, but it does not do this just because one becomes stronger than the other as you move your MacBook Pro away from one and toward the other. It will switch networks when the wireless signal falls below a threshold that is not user-selectable. It will do that whether or not you specify different wireless network names.

  • Airport extreme (gigabit ethernet) b/g not working

I have an airport extreme (gigabit ethernet)  that I use as my base in an extended network. I Have always had it in Wireless N mode with b/g compatability. the other day my speeds went from being super fast and happy to less than 1mbps. I went and plugged directly in to the airport via ethernet and got blazing fast speeds again.. I switched my radio mode to n only and wireless speeds were fast again.. switched back to b/g compatible and they are in the toilet.. is it possible for the b/g compatible antenna to just crap out?  if so this is very disoncerting as I have several wireless devices in my home that operate on b/g and don't want them to be left out in the cold.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

what I did with the b/g testing was I changed the name of the base station to another name so none of the b/g devices that were connecting to it could.. and so it was only the laptop I was using to run the tests.. and still the speeds were terrible.. of course then when I changed it to "n" only mode they were fast again. so I know that my laptop was the only client connected wirelessly or otherwise to the base station when running both tests.
I am extending the network with an airport extreme base station dual band.  The solution I have in place currently is to basically swap them. I Have the Dual band running as the main base station in N mode with b/g compatability,  and I have the Gigabit ethernet AEBS running as the extender... so far my speeds haven't suffered at all and hopefully it will hold that way.  but I still can't understand why the AEBSn would suddenly just stop providing any kind of speed when running as the base in b/g compatibility mode.

  • Airport Extreme won't connect with my cable modem (Time Warner)

OK, I'm tired of staring at a blinking amber light. I'm reaching out to anyone out there who's had this problem. I've got everything connected right, the software loaded, the connections set on my laptop (Macbok Pro). But still my Airport Extreme won't connect to the Internet. I've tried different cables, rebooting both my modem and my Airport. For the record, I've had a Mac IT guy from my advertising agency come by my house and make sure that everything's installed and hooked up right. But it still keeps saying that my IP address is invalid, even though I can connect (wired) using the modem.
I suspect I'll just have to take it to the Genius Bar or something. But anybody got any ideas? I really want to join the 'n' generation....

Did you power off the cable modem when switching the Ethernet connection from laptop to AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? This is usually required.

  • Make AirPort Extreme share internet connection with Time Capsule

    Hello,
This is the situation: in one room there's an old Mac, the modem which delivers the internet and the AirPort Extreme which is connected to the modem.
In another room there's the Mac Pro, the Time Capsule which is connected to the Mac Pro with an ethernet cable and to a printer via USB.
I want the AirPort Extreme to wirelessly share it's internet connection with the Time Capsule so that the Time Capsule can share the printer with all three Macs (old Mac, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro), the Mac Pro can use the Time Capsule for Time Machine functionality and maybe the Macbook Pro too.
And just using the Time Capsule for internet.
    How can I do this?
At the moment the AirPort Extreme is disconnected and the Time Capsule is used instead, but this way I can't share the printer...
    Thanks!

Is that AirPort Extreme "flat" or dome-shaped?  If it's flat (802.11n-capable), you should be able to configure the "main" router to "Allow this network to be extended" and the other to "Join a wireless network".  If the Extreme is dome-shaped, then you need a more-complicated "WDS" arrangement.  In either case it shouldn't matter much which router plays which role.
I'm not sure what you mean by "And just using the Time Capsule for internet."

Is the printer connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule?  Can you see the printer in the "Printer" panel of AirPort Utility?  What happens when you try to use it from one of the Macs?

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.

  • My airport extreme will not connect to the Internet

My airport extreme will not connect to my toshiba router. I connected it to my office internet this morning but when I hooked it up at home it simply will not connect. I have tried resetting all the settings and have had no luck. It did work once upon a time. I currently have my airport express hooked up so I know there is connectivity.

I could never figure it out after trying everything I could and going to the genius bar I ended up just purchasing another extreme.  The really funny thing is that I can set up a network between the two and it works fine.  I am using it at work now with out any problems so I guess there is really no loss :-?

  • Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet) + Airport Express (WDS) = disconnects

I have an Airport Express configured as a WDS, bridging a wired device (a small PC running Linux) to an Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet). Security is enabled (WPA).
Frequently, the Airport Express disconnects from the wireless network and I have to reboot the thing by unplugging it. I have it set up to log to the PC, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the log.
Any guidance? I'd like to hold on to the Express, but I can't if it's acting flakey like this.

More than likely you are experiencing RF interference from other devices operating at 2.4 GHz. You can use a tool like iStumbler to see what other networks are visible in your area. Then you can configure your 2 base stations to use a channel which is as far as possible from the channels used by other networks.

  • Airport extreme unable to connect to new router

We just received a new router from our cable company. The old router worked with our airport extreme just fine.  After hooking up the new router the airport extreme could not connect to it.  I received the following error "error occurred while trying to access the apple wireless device.  Make sure your connection is valid Error -6753" So then I tried to power off and reset the Airport extreme.  The button was stuck on my reset button.  I did figure that out and was able to click the button.  But even if I would hear the audible click when i held down the reset button the amber light never flashed rapidly?  Not sure what else to do.  I have turned off the modem, unplugged the router, plugged them back in. etc.   I just don't know where to go from here.
    Thanks!
    jodi

Were you able to get the AirPort Extreme to reset back to factory default settings, as LaPastenague detailed?
The amber light needs to flash rapidly for about 6-8 seconds during the process to indicate that the reset is taking place correctly. Once you release the reset button, the light will stay solid amber for 15-20 seconds or so, then change to slow blinking amber.
We are a bit confused as well, since in your first post you mention that you received a new router from the cable company, then later in the post, you mention that you have a (separate?) modem.
In the most recent post, you mention that you have a new modem. Is the new router from the cable company the same device as the new modem?  Or, do you have a new modem and another new router in addition to the AirPort Extreme?
Can you clarify on exactly what devices that you have? Make and model numbers would help. We know that you have an AirPort A1408.

No, the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have any type of audio output.
Are you thinking of the AirPort Express which does have an audio output?

Airport extreme has to connect to internet if computer goes to screen saver.  Any way around this?

Describe the issue in more detail.. as it doesn't currently make sense.. the AE should always be connected to the internet. It should never disconnect.. but the computer can fail to connect to wireless after sleep.. that is common problem.
See Tesserax docos if you have wireless connect issues after sleep.

my airport extreme only will connect with computer or ipad not both

We need just a bit more information, please before we can begin to accurately troubleshoot this issue.
    1) What is the make and model number of your modem?
    2) What operating system are you using on the MacBook Pro at this time. Your tagline indicates that you are using OS X (10.4.8), but this is about 6-7 years out of date.
If you are no sure which operating system your Mac is using......click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
