Airport extreme making noise & wifi sync

I have an Airport Extreme and its making a noise like an electrical humm or buzz occasionally. Sounds a bit like a hard drive spinning.
Anyone else heard of this?
I also get issues with both iMacs I've owned where they are on the network, but the WiFi menu seems to only see my wifi for several seconds which making wireless synching via iTunes impossible
Yet it plays flawlessly to my 3rd Gen AppleTV
Paul

I have same here, I don' t know whats happening... Till now, I am not facing any problems with connectivity and my support covarage got expired already. tell me ur experience if called to apple support.
Thanks

  • Kernal panics after installing AIRPORT EXTREME PCI 54M WIFI CARD

I am keen to use it as a media streamer for appletv - have i bought the wrong card or is there something i can try/do?
as always - thanks in advance

    Hi-
I would consider the problem to possibly be incompatibility with Leopard.
The seller states 10.2/10.3/10.4 "and above", but does this include 10.5x? Leopard is not specifically mentioned. "And above" could mean up to 10.4.11.......
If you have a drive with OS 10.4x on it, try booting to that volume with the card.
If it works, then it's an OS incompatibility.
If it doesn't, then the card is the problem.
Biggest problem, is it looks like some generic brand. Not knowing the maker really makes trouble shooting difficult.
    Is is a Broadcom chipset?
While generic Broadcom chipset cards worked well up through 10.4.11, Leopard seems to have "broken" that generic support that was previously enjoyed, for at least some of those chips. Seems to be an "era" related thing......
If the chipset is Atheros, the previously successful Orangeware driver also doesn't work in Leopard.

  • Are we able to use the AirPort Extreme has a wifi extender

are we able to use the AirPort Extreme has a wifi extender

Yes, if you plan to extend using wireless only and you use it with another Apple wireless router....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the "main" AirPort, as the "extender" can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.

  • I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi

I bought the Airport Extreme 802.11n Wifi from the Apple store in West Edmonton Mall Canada got to the airport, customs scanned the box (which was unopened) and they got a dangerous chemicals hit on the unit. No need to say what else happened there after, i was skinned inside out, body search, drill with the 21 questions and on top that they want to know if i have any ties with any terrorist organizations.
Why would this device give off such a reading?

    It doesn't.
The box may have been handled by someone with unclean hands. Or, their security equipment may have been miscalibrated. Or, they're just incompetent. Don't you feel safe?

  • AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) WiFi access point disappears but wired ethernet is ok

My AirPort Extreme SSID and access point "disappear" randomly from available WiFi networks. I had a 1st gen AirPort Extreme and never had this problem until earlier this year. I thought it might be a failing radio in the 1st gen unit so I used it as a good excuse to get a 5th gen AirPort extreme about 3 months ago. Same problem has been occuring; unfortunately it is random and I cannot get a handle on what/when/why it is happening.
For example, my iPhone 4S was connected to the network at about 1700 today and when I next checked the phone around 2115, no wifi connection and my network was not listed in the WiFi connections. The base station is away from other wireless devices (mouse, keyboard) and is about 10 feet from the nearest PC and monitor. Both printers are accessed via ethernet, not wifi. The strange and puzzling thing is that the PC, which is connected by ethernet to the AirPort Extreme, is still connected to the internet (I can browse, check email, newsgroups, etc.).
When I run the AirPort Utility, the base station is identified (AirPort Extreme 802.11n 5th Generation), there is an appropriate IP address, Version 7.6 firmware, and MAC address is listed. However, when I attempt to Continue or do a Manual Setup, I'm prompted for the admin password, the progress bar moves during 'reading from the Apple wireless device. Please wait...,' and then the utility reports "An error occured while tryong to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6722.
If I unplug, wait, and reattach the power to the base station, WiFi becomes available again. When the WiFi connection "disappears", the LED light is solid green.
Any insights are appreciated; please let me know other helpful information I can provide.
    Scott

I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts.
I bought an airport extreme n last week and plugged it in, hooked it up to my adsl router by Ethernet, configured it to set up a new wifi network and got the green light. I use an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Windows 7 PC with an N wifi adaptor.
The airport works fine for about 2 hours before the wireless network disappears without a trace. Green light remains on the base station and I can connect fine by Ethernet.
    "it just don't make sense"
    I hope it's not a windows-7-only thing, Apple.
PS. Updated firmware to the newest version, no difference.
Airport is near to a wireless phone so I set a specific wireless channel and frequency to prevent a clash. No change.

  • I have an Airport Extreme as my wifi hub and an Airport Express to beam music. All of a sudden the Express stopped working and I get the error message "this version of Airport Utility does not support this base station".  All my software is up to date and

I have a WiFi system in the house that uses the Airport Extreme for a hub and an older Express for sending music from my Mac to my sound system. Everything worked great till yesterday. When I go to Networks I see the Extreme and I see the Express but the Express is no longer connected and I get an error message "this version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station".  Any ideas?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if  that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

  • Multiple Airport Extremes with different WiFi networks

Hello.  I'm not sure how to word this question, but here it goes...
In our office we have 2 independent internet services.  Each one is connected to its own Airport Extreme.  One of our internet connections went down and I am wondering if it is possible to use the first Airport Extreme connected to the good internet and send a signal to the other Airport Extreme that lost its internet and use it as it was, so we don't have to change all of our printers and computers WiFi logins...  I want the second Extreme to just stay the same network name but get it's internet from the other Extreme..  Does that make sense?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, it would not be possible to say whether this might work....or even give you an educated guess.......without having a lot of information about how the office network(s) were originally designed and set up, what security was used, whether MAC Address Authentication was used (common in most commercial networks) along with any number of other things that may be involved.
Best bet would be to get the with IT folks who designed or administer the network for an answer.

  • Airport Extreme making PC crash + slow

I just got the Airport extreme 801.11n and I have a linksys wireless G.
I got the Airport extreme setup with my wifes PC notebook and my intel Macbook Pro.
When my wife uses google's Picasa photo program to send pictures over email, it works fine until she sends 6 or more then the laptop crashes. When I hook her up to the Linksys she can send as many as she wants (she just sent 15).
As some of the other posts indicate, it is noticeably slower.

Also, have you considered installing an Airport Monitoring widget that will tell you at what speed you are connected to your network at? http://www.apple.com/downloads/.../airtrafficcontrol.html
Unfortunately AirPortTrafficControl doesn't tell you the real speed. If you are connected to a 802.11g network it just generically states "54 Mbps".

  • Unable to connect to an airport extreme 802.11n wifi using airport utility

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11N Wi-Fi, i connect it to my cable router and i can access the internet using the default setting on the WIFI.
However the status light is blinking yellow.
I try to use the Airport utility to connect to the Airport Extreme however i am unable to connect.
The error message as follows" An error occur while trying to access the apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again"
I know that i am connect to the Airport Extreme Wi-Fi, i can browse the internet but i need to access the device to change the security and SSID name etc.
    Can anyone help.

Whats the planned topology supposed to look like. What is the status of each router now?

  • Airport Extreme connected via wifi -- will remote MobileMe still work?

I have two Macs: a desktop and a laptop. I have the latest software and I have MobileMe. My internet is physically connected to the desktop computer. The laptop is connected via wifi using a non-Apple router.
According to Apple's website concerning the AirPort Extreme, "Say you’re traveling and you need a file on the hard drive connected to your AirPort Extreme back at home. If you’re a MobileMe member using Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, no problem. You can access all the files on your shared drive over the Internet."
My question is this: if I attach an Airport Extreme to the laptop -- which is connected via wifi to the network -- will I still be able to access the attached hard drive via MobileMe while traveling, or does this work only if the Airport Extreme is directly wired to the internet?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, very helpful.
Say it loud, this is one of the best things of Airport, you control the volume even with the optical output:
¿However, why I can´t do the same with the optical output of my 2008 Mac Mini?
Each one (Mac mini 2008  and Airport Express 2008) have optical link to both receivers (Denon AVR3805 and Denon AVR1905).
But I must control the volume of the mac mini with the remote of the AVR3805.
It seems Airplay makes some magic, but straight driver of OSX over audio device don´t.
What a PIA (Pain in the ***). They can put Gigabits of audio information in the optical link but they can´t add a layer adding a header of some bytes to the packets, adressed to a smart DAC than can control the analog output with two bytes of information.
IEEE, ¿Will you make a layer specification for smart DACs? Life and devices use would be much simpler.
Apple in the meantime makes the magic he is able with Airplay.
    Some day.

  • AirPort Extreme stops sending wifi signal

I have an AirPort Extreme. It quite frequently (like 2x per month) just stops sending a wifi signal.  The light on the unit is green. As soon as run it through a power cycle it starts working again.  This has been going on for about 6 months but it's really starting to get frustrating.

What model is the AE? Actual model number if flat.. otherwise just say tall.. !!
How does it fit into the network? Is it bridge or router or extend wireless?? You need to give some info.. no info .. we are guessing...more than usual.
Fix.. hmm... this is sort of feature now.. self-securing wireless.. it turns off to prevent access.
    Fix by replacement..
Does it drop out on all devices or just your Mac?? If you run Yosemite.. the cause might be there.

  • Does the airport extreme replace current wifi router?

I'm not much of a techie so please forgive my ignorance! I have just had BT internet installed with the Home Hub 4. It seems to work with my macbook, iphone, work's windows laptop etc. However, it will not connect to my wifi blu-ray player as apparently the hub does not have DLNA support (I don't know what that is but I think it's relevant). So could someone tell me if the airport extreme would solve this problem? Also, would I plug the airport straight into the phoneline or does it connect to the current hub? Finally, my main phoneline (and apparently the only one I can use for phone/internet) is in the main bedroom which means there is not full signal in the lounge, so would the airport provide better strength?
    Sorry for all the questions!

So could someone tell me if the airport extreme would solve this problem?
    No, it won't.
Finally, my main phoneline (and apparently the only one I can use for phone/internet) is in the main bedroom which means there is not full signal in the lounge, so would the airport provide better strength?
Only if you locate the AirPort in the lounge and connect it to the Home Hub 4 using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11ac wifi stops working - requires reboot

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11ac which has worked fine for me for several months.  However, in the last 2 weeks, my wifi disappears from all devices about once every other day.  The light is green on the Extreme, but no devices see the wifi.  After a power cycle, the wifi comes back up and works fine, for a while (24-48 hours)
The Apple AirPort Extreme 802.11ac is running
    software version is 7.7.3
Router Mode is OFF (Bridge mode)
    DHCP is disabled too.
2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channel selection is set to auto.
I have no usb disks plugged in.
Is anyone else having this issue?

The light is green on the Extreme, but no devices see the wifi.
Can you test something by ethernet?? Is it totally wireless or has internet dropped out as well?
    This is important.
What modem router is it plugged into.. as some are very flakey with the AC model airports?
Have you tried a full factory reset... and clean new setup?
This is required now and then. Especially if anything Yosemite is in the network.. please do the following even if you don't use Yosemite it can help.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer or iOS running the latest utility.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen6 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better since the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is a problem for you as bridged you will need to set dhcp reservation in the main router.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.

  • Can i use my old round airport extreme as a WiFi extension?

i have my new airport extreme plugged into the modem via ethernet and wish to extend its WiFi network in my house using the older round airport extreme.
is this possible, and if so how do i configure this?
    thanks all - T

It will depend on if this "older round" AirPort is an 802.11b or 802.11g model. If it is an 802.11g version, then yes you could use it to create a WDS extended network.

  • Does adding a second airport extreme slow the wifi speeds?

I get 17mbps from my airport base station hardwired to uverse router. On the new 5th gen extreme.used to extend network, speeds are 7mbps at best. is a second device incapable of the same bandwidth as the originating extreme?even when well within range?

My only issue is, i've not got the AE's on "bridge Mode"
That's quite an issue, since you only want to have one router handling DHCP and NAT on the network. You have two routers both trying to provide the same services if the AirPort Extreme is distributing IP addresses. Conflicts are inevitable. The AirPort Extreme needs to be in Bridge Mode.
I can't seem to put the AE back into the connection sharing option that says "distrubute a range of ip address"
This setting would be used only if your ISP has assigned multiple IP addresses to you....and the AirPort Extreme is the "main" router on the network.
"Share a public IP address" would be the setting to use.....if the Uverse router will tolerate another router on the network. Sometimes you can find a workaround, but then you have to put up with Double NAT errors and other unpredictable things on the network.
I used to be able to operate without bridge mode off the uverse router/modem but can't anymore.
Probably due to updates on both the Uverse and AirPort routers to prevent users from trying to run two routers on the same network.
Uverse routher which is impossible to figure out to reserve ip's etc for externetal devices.
Is this a Motorola router, or 2-Wire?  Either should have online support for this type of basic router service.
