Airport Extreme + My Book World Edition via Ethernet?

Hi,
Simple question - if i bought a Western Digital My Book World edition which has an Ethernet out port - could i connect it to the Airport Extreme to share with all my devices?
If so would it have any advanced over buying the cheap(ist) Western Digital and connecting just by USB?
Thanks

If that drive is usable by your devices when connected directly to them via Ethernet, then yes that would work.
You would be relying on the file sharing services of that drive... not the file sharing services of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).

  • Airport Extreme wont pass internet through via ethernet OR wireless ...

I have an iMac in my house that can receive internet flawlessly when plugged directly into my ethernet jack in the wall (connected to my router). I can fwd (share) that through airport to my computers in my detached garage.
I have a spare AExtreme i plugged into the ethernet wall connector and then to the iMac and internet pages wouldn't load nor would wifi airport work when joined to that AE network.
My routers firmware is on the latest edition so i dont think that's it. This AE has been sitting in the box for months so maybe its software/firmware is out of date? how do i update AE firmware?
Any clues as to whats my issue?

I am running into the same problem.
My setup was working fine until a few days ago when I noticed the flashing amber.
    My setup is/was:
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core2Duo
    OS X 10.5.2
    Airport Extreme Gigabit
Comcast Cable: Modem to AE via ethernet - AE to iMac via Ethernet - AE wireless to powerbooks.
(This setup was working fine for the last 2 months when i bought the AE - I was not using Airport on the imac since i was connecting via ethernet.
Now using that setup, I get a green light on the AE, Network status via System Pref all seem OK, but cannot connect.
Right now, I can only connect directly via ethernet to my modem. I turned on the iMac Airport, it recognized the AE and downloaded a firmware update. But this did not change the situation. I did do a reset a couple of times, as well as just left the AE off all day.
Not sure what to do next. I am currently using internet sharing sparingly in the house via iMac airport.

  • Connecting Airport Extreme N to Time Capsule via ethernet to extend wireles

Hi, I currently have 2 Airport Extreme N and a Time capsule and would like to connect all three together. I am planning to use the time Capsule as the router and then use the other airport extreme to extend the wireless network. I am planning to have ethernet connection between the three devices ie Airport extreme N (A) is connected to time capsule via ethernet and airport extreme N (B) is connected to time capsule via another ethernet.
I have tried the Extend Wireless network option to connect them, but that seems to generate so much traffic between the airport extreme N and the time capsule that the network is not usable. I have also tried using WDS but that didn't seem to work.
The three wireless networks have some areas of overlap but the signal is weak which is why i prefer to link them up with ethernet.
What is the best wall to configure them? should I set them up so that they're each creating a wireless network but with the same name? Or is there a better solution? Thanks!

It seems to me the easiest way is to have the Airport Extreme connect to internet using Ethernet, using DHCP and the Connection sharing in off (bridge mode) and then create a new wireless network with the same name... Is that correct? I have previously ran the apple wizard and it did something weird with the network and then both the time capsule and the airport extreme are serving out IP address and both of them have the same IP address 10.0.1.1. which then messes up everything...
    Any ideas? thanks!

  • Airport Extreme Base Station to Express via Ethernet?

I have both a new Extreme (n) and Express (n) and am trying to set up a network between two buildings. I have been successful with the wireless network, yet the wireless signal between buildings is not strong enough for streaming video. The current configuration is the Extreme in one building connected to the cable modem. This is where the strongest signal is found. The express is in the main house and the signal is much weaker.
My question: If I run an ethernet wire from one building to the next, can I connect these two Airport devices via ethernet to strengthen the signal? How would I configure this in the Airport Utility?
I made an attempt to plug the ethernet into both and the Utility stopped seeing either device and I lost the internet connection.
I may not understand the way these devices communicate with each other. If anyone can point me in the direction of a solution I would be grateful. My goal is to have a signal strength strong enough to stream Netflix videos in the house with the Express. I am thinking that if the Express is wired to the base station via ethernet then the wireless signal from the Express would be sufficient to stream wirelessly to a new Macbook... Possible?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

A couple of questions. First, at AirPort>Wireless>Wireless Mode should the selection be "Join a wireless network" or "Off"? I currently have Join a the wireless network selected.
For both base stations, Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network.
When I am at Internet>Internet Connection the screen is muted, which means I can't change anything. The two items on the page say "Connect Using: Wireless Network" and " "Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)" - as you mentioned. This is correct, right?
For both AirPorts, Connect Using = Ethernet; For the AEBSn, Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address; For the AXn, Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
The Extreme (connected to modem) and Express (ethernet cable will connect to port on Extreme) have different names. And each is configured to participate in the same network.
    Both would be correct.

  • Airport Extreme & My Book Studio Edition II

    Hi all,
I'm thinking about connecting a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II to my Airport Extreme base station. The caveat is that I would like to configure the drive as RAID-1 (drive mirroring).
On one hand, the Airport Extreme doesn't seem to officially support RAID drives, but on the other had common wisdom seems to be that RAID is support as long as the RAID partitioning is done inside of the drive itself.
Since this is confusing, I'm wondering whether anybody here has any advice or, even better, can confirm that the Aiport Extreme work with Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition II in RAID-1 mode.
    Thanks!
    -Bernd

    avinbc,
Huh ..., it does work well. My AEBS and Airdisk are running without real problems.
As to the OP: I don't know the answer but I'm interested in the answer as well.

  • Airport Extreme and WD My Book World Edition

    Hello,
I am considering buying an airport extreme, but I am fairly new to the product and had some questions about it.
I have a WD My Book World Edition wireless hard drive, is it possible to plug the hard drive into the airport extreme via ethernet cable? Or does the airport extreme have to be connected to the wireless modem.
I already have a wireless network setup with a linksys wireless router, I am just confused on if I need to plug the airport extreme into the wireless router or the modem.
The reason I am asking this question is because I also want to be able to stream music to my home theater receiver, and my theater receiver is in my office, and the wireless router is in a different room. I'd like to be able to have my WD My Book located in my office, as opposed to next to the wireless router.
hopefully this made some sense and someone can answer my questions! I just want to be 100% clear before I buy anything!
    thank you!

    Welcome to the discussions, ithew!
If you want to be able to stream AirTunes from your computer to your stereo, you need an AirPort Express, not an AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Express would be configured to "join" your wireless network for this function.
The AirPort Express does not support a hard drive at it's USB port if that is where you were thinking of plugging in the WD device. The WD drive would stay connected to your network just as it is now.

  • Airport Express and Western Digital My Book World Edition

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker
I've just bought a WD My book world edition 1tb (the white one) and simply cannot get it to work with my current set up.
I've got a mac book pro & Maci mini. Internet comes via an Airport Express plugged into a netgear adsl router dg834 v2 which gets it's IP address via DCHP from my wife's firm
I followed the set up instructions but neither computer can see the My Book.
However if I plug the Mac into the router it can see it, ditto if I plug the My Book directly into the Mac Book's either net port.
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
Confused by the whole thing, and any help or advice would be most greatfully recieved...
    Many thanks
    Andrew

    Welcome to the discussions, eyedropper!
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
The AirPort Express will only support a compatible printer. It does not support a hard drive at the USB port. You'll need an AirPort Extreme for that. Check this Apple document to confirm and verify:

I too apparently made the mistake of buying a WD World Edition II 2TB drive after seeing it sale priced by WD on Dealmac.com. I am unable to see it as a network drive or using any disk utility tool when connecting it either directly to my Mac or directly to the latest Airport either by USB or Ethernet cables. All comments on websites seem to require that I delve into programing with SAMBA or some such to hack the drive and get it to be visible and usable on my Mac network. Does anyone have a suggestion or solution for getting a WDWE up on a Mac network without complex programming or having a Windows machine? Or is it really not functional for a Macintosh user without a degree in Windows networking? Thanks!

  • WD My Book World Edition II

Has anyone tried using the Western Digital World Edition II NAS (10/100/1000 Ethernet model) with Time Capsule? I'm wondering what the speed difference is over a 802.11n WLAN compared to connecting an external hard drive that uses USB? Is it difficult to configure through the Airport Utility? Can it be password protected and set up read/write access for specific users? Any known issues running it with OS X Leopard?

I have a My Book World Edition 500 Gig. Have there been issue with it and Leopard? You bet!
This system worked without a hitch under tiger. When I upgraded to Leopard the NAS went away. When I discovered a solution another update from Apple would make it disappear. Just last night I opened up port 137 for *windows name sharing*, did an update (which on the surface of things could not have affected the situation), and (after a turning it off) the NAS appeared again.. Today it seems stable. We will see if it remains stable over the next week. This has been a running theme in the discussion about NAS on the forum.
By the way- the Airport is not hard to set-up.
If you would like a follow-up leave me a message here.

  • Time Machine does not recognize my WD my book world edition network drive

I just updated to mountain lion and now my WD my book world edition network drive is not recognized by time machine. I get a message that says " The network backup does not support the required AFP features. Does anyone have a fix for this.

That device is unsuitable for use with Time Machine.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or a mini-tower (802.11ac) AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base station supports Time Machine, not any previous model.

  • Time Machine Does not find My Book World Edition NAS

I have been using Time Machine for over 2 years with a WD My Book World Edition NAS (White Light WD10000H1NC).  Recently the backups stopped.  When I tried to reconnect to the drive I found that I could not located the drive in TimeMachine with what I thought was the backup drive name.  Currently when I open Time Machine there is a share drive in list, but with a different name than I expected (WD_Backup on "bestback-backup") and when I try to connect to the drive it fails.  I know the NAS drive is working correctly as I can connect to the drive in finder by mounting via "Connect to Server" with the name smb://bestback  and I can see all my public folders.  When I look in Finder I see two share drives, bestback and bestback-backup.  However I cannot connect to "bestback-backup" and not sure how.  I believe my issue is that the original backup, must be on the share drive bestback-backup, but not sure how to reconnect or remount it.  I have gone into the WD configuration and confirmed the drive is named "bestback".

I have the NAS mounted in finder and can access the drive files in "Public" with no issue.  I can't run any DiskUtility on that drive. I also can't see the TimeMachine backup folders which leads me to believe TimeMachine is not looking for that specific drive.
Basically TimeMachine shows an option to connect to a "share" drive that I can't seem to mount.  That same name appears in finder sidebar, but is "unmounted".  I have tried mounting this other drive as a server using the name shown, but without any luck.
Not sure how to mount this other drive, which may be a folder or related to the original NAS.  It seems like the NAS is partitioned or I need to mount to a specific folder within the NAS?

  • Western Digital My Book World Edition Network Hard Drive

    Hi All,
Does anyone know if one of these network drives will work with the Mac OS? I am setting up a Digital Photo lab at my school and would like one place where all students can store their files. We have 21 of the new iMacs i this lab .Also, can I format the drive as a Mac OS Extended drive?

I've just purchased a 1TB My Book World Edition and went through the installation process on a Windows machine. I can see the PUBLIC connection from >Go>Network.
I can't log on selecting the SMB/CIFS shared volume because I don't know how to Authenticate it. I have made an account or passwork for this? Or have I? Or is there a factory default?
I've installed and I'm running WD Anywhere Backup successfully. So I have almost all the functionality I wanted except.
I want to use Time Capsule. Presently, the 12" PowerBook is the only Leopard machine on the network, the MacBook Pro is still Tiger because I run ProTools and don't want to upgrade until the beta upgrade is stable.
When I try and use the Shared Storage Manager via http://192.168.2.9 because, again, I do not know the username and password.
I do want to use the ability to be able to access this drive remotely, via the internet, so do I have to make a VPN? Is so, do I have to purchase a product such a DigiTunnel or VPN Tracker? Which one do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

  • My book world edition is no longer supported by 10.8.2

I just reconnected my WD My Book World Edition to my wireless internet connection hub. In trying to set up Time machine, it tells me that the server I am trying to connect to is no longer supported?
    What is the best solution?

Might be a solution at the Western Digital site. Here is one help article:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3561/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzU 4MTE0NTQ4L3NpZC9pbDRZTGRnbA%3D%3D
Possible you need to upgrade firmware on the drive? You didn't say which version of the drive you have.

Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.
