Airport extreme(n) and airport express (b/g) problems

hi,
i have for a few years an airport express (b/g). the airport express is connected to my cable modem.
i also have a newer airport extreme (n) which was still in the box but i want to use (as it must have a bigger range ?). in fact i want the extreme to reach my playstation 3. (the connection from ps3 to express sometimes drops as its signal is too weak)
if i also connect the airport extreme to the cable modem, it shows with apps like "airradar" (on my macs) or "wifitrak" (on my iphone) that the strenght of the airport express is higher than my airport extreme. even if i set the extreme to 5ghz. both express and extreme are placed near each other. am i doing anything wrong here ?
below devices need to be connected.
1 macbook g4 (b)
2 macbook pro (n)
2 mac pro (n)
1 wii (b)
2 nintendo ds (b)
1 ps3 ?
with other words i need some advise in how to set up both a airport extreme and express network on the same cable modem.
thank, michiel

question: i below what should i do ?
1) put a cable from my cablemodem to the airport extreme bs;
2) put a cable the airport extreme bs to the airport express bs.
Yes on both. Your network configuration would look something like the following:
Modem > (Ethernet) > \[WAN port] AEBSn \[LAN port] > (Ethernet) > AX
do i have to reset the modems and are there any setting i should be aware of ?
Yes, it's always a good idea to both reset both base stations and, after doing so and before configuring them, perform a complete power recycle of your network equipment.
So in this case ...
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn, AX, & computers. (Order is not critical.)
o Reset both the AEBSn & AX. (Again, order is not critical.)
o Power-down each base station after performing a successful reset.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 10 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-up your computer(s).
o Use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure both base stations as required.

  • Vonage between cable modem and Airport Express is a problem

I have my Comcast cable modem connected via Ethernet to the Vonage box which is connected via Ethernet cable to my Airport Express. When I try to connect wirelessly via my Powerbook it's a crapshoot whether or not I can connect to the internet. Mostly the quality is very poor if you can connect at all. If I cut the Vonage out of the equation hooking the cable modem to the Airport Express it works perfect. So Vonage is my problem and I need to change some settings either with my computer or my Airport Express, but which ones? I've been given several different ideas from the information I've sifted through (i.e. change the DNS, change the sharing prefs, get a hard wired router). Oddly enough an old HP computer I have in the basement connected to the internet via another Airport Express has no problems with connection at all. If someone could let me know which of these fixes I am preparing to try would work the best I would appreciate it.

Interesting. So you have two Airport Express devices configured into a WDS, with the one upstairs functioning as the main base station and the one downstairs functioning as a remote base station. And your PC downstairs connected to the remote base station has no problems connecting to the internet. Is that PC cabled to the Airport Express, or does it connect wirelessly to the remote Airport Express?
What happens if you bring the Powerbook downstairs to where the PC now resides. Does the Powerbook then get the same great internet connection as the PC?

  • Airport Extreme / TimeCapsule and Airprot Express base stations

So if I use an Airport Extreme (using 802.11n) for my main internet access, can my Airport Expresses join that network to maintain access to stereos and printers around the house.
I guess Im asking can the 802.11g devices join an 802.11n network....? Any help would be good news.

The side effects of having to use the b/g compatibility mode will be a slight decrease in the speed that your wireless network would get in n-only mode. Of course, none of this is important unless all of your computers are capable of "n" connections so that you could even contemplate running an n-only network.
If you are currently able to max out out internet connection speed (that your ISP claims you should be getting) with a direct ethernet cabled connection between a computer and your DSL modem, then there is no need to change your DSL modem.

  • Airport Extreme (N) to Airport Express (G) WDS Problems

Recently got an Airport Extreme n.
Trying to use and older Airport Express to extend network / use for AirTunes.
Everytime I reconfigure the Extreme for WDS / Allow network to be extended it seems to switch to 5ghz only.
loses all G connections - ie only Apple TV still connecting!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have an old AEX, and could never get WDS to work with my extreme-n either.
Apple is moving away from the old WDS to the new "extend a wireless network" mode. This is more evident in the AEBS (dual-band), WDS is now a hidden option.
You have two choices, one is to use the AEX-g in client mode for AirTunes streaming, or get a new AEX-n to extend the n network.

  • Airport Express B/G : problems with manual IP configuration?

I don't know when it started, but I think it has something to do with one of te latest systemupdates or airport firmware updates.
    Configuration :
    - Airport Express N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.7), roaming with Extreme N
    - Airport Extreme N : only N, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.35), roaming with Express N
    - Airport Express B/G (older one) : B/G compatible, bridge mode, IP manual (192.168.1.8), no roaming, just stand alone.
All the airports are wired connected to a 10/100 switch.
No internet configuration on these airports, I'm using a separated router, also connected to the switch.
Problem : The airport Express B/G dissapears from the network : from time to time not visible in the airport utility program, from time to time not visible in iTunes (airtunes). In spite of these problems, he is always visible in the airport network menu. An IP ping works just fine.
When I change the IP configuration of the Airport Extreme B/G from manual to DHCP, there is NO problem anymore.
No problems with the Airport Express N an Airport Extreme N.
Are there other users with the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Extreme N and 2 express

I picked up the Extreme base station when I got the Air.
I was previously using a Linksys 54G with 2 Airport Express.
I used the Linksys as the main router wired and on wireless G and the 2 express in the dead zones of my house.
The 2 express were connected via ethernet to the linksys.
Can I configure the Extreme N as 802.11n 5gHz and keep the express at the g speed?

I removed the Linksys and replaced it with the Extreme N.
It is acting as my router to my cable modem.
The 2 express units are connected via Ethernet to the new Extreme N.
I have a new Macbook Air that I would like to use on the N network at the highest speed (5gHz).
I have an older 12" Powerbook and an older imac that have to stay on wireless G.
I want know if I am out of range of the N network but can see the G will the Air use the Express wireless. The N and G will overlap in certain areas.

  • Adding second airport express to network problem

Hi all. I currently have and airport extreme and airport express in range extending mode which have been working flawlessly for 3 years. I am trying to add an additional, newer airport express to put in another location. After setting the new one up in airport utility the light on the new express is green but in airport utilities in shows yellow. Troubleshooting said I needed to update firmware, which I have done. Still have the same issue. Now when I click continue in the airport utility it tells me the unit is setup and working, yet it still shows yellow in airport utility window. Quite confused. Any ideas?

Never mind. I figured it out.

  • Airport Express base station problem.....

I am having a problem with my base station and am hoping i can get some help here.
    This is my setup
    Mac book pro
external HD (where itunes is located)
    Epson R260 usb printer.
cable internet with router and modem
    What i hope to do:
hook up usb hub to airport base station so i can plug in printer and HD so i can wirelessly print from the printer and play music on itunes from external HD.
i have tried a couple times to set it up and never get it to print.
right now the base station is blinking orange. i have a Ethernet line i can use for the MBP or base station if needed
    thanks!!

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express

  • Airport Express Card Installation Problem

I purchased an Airport Express card for my PowerMac G5 (Dual 1.8ghz)...after installing the card and rebooting the computer, I just got a black screen. I know the "late 2005 Models" particularly the October 2005 models are not able to use the Express card....but mine was purchased in Feb. 2005.
I really need wireless capabilities and I'm stuck on what my options are. Apple customer service said my computer is "airport express ready" and should take the card....but no matter how many times I try to install, I get a black screen.
Has anyone had a similar problem or have any solutions....I'm moving to a place where I will not be able to directly connect through a hard line (Ethernet)...Thank you in advance!

The AirPort Extreme card is compatible with your Power Mac G5.
One or more of the following is true:
The AirPort Extreme card is defective.
    The card is installed incorrectly.
The Power Mac's motherboard is defective and failing to recognize the card.

  • Airport Express - Nailed the problem with Airplay fall out

Yes, finally I nailed it after reading hundrets of post with a huge variaty of slutions - here it is:
    Set up:
    - 1 Time Capsule
    - 4 older Airport Expres (still new enough to be supported by Yosemite)
    - 1 Very new Airport Express (2,4 and 5 Ghz)
    Main configuration:
    - Time Capsule extends the WiFi ADSL modem from my internet supplier. WiFi is disconnected on the suppliers modem. Time Capsule sat i "Bridge mode".
    Setup - Base Station:
    With Password
    Setup - Internet
    Standard DHCP setup
    Setup - Wireless
Network mode. Time Capsule sat to "Create wireless network. All other Airport Express are sat to extend the network.
Setup - Wireless - Wireless options
Checkmark in 5Ghz mode (not necessary)
    HERE IS THE TRICK!!!
    Radio mode: 802.11 a/n - 802.11 b/g - NOT AUTO!!!!
2,4 Ghz: Manually sat at 13
5 Ghz: Manually sat at 48
Important. Before choosing  channel 13 and 48 I downloaded WiFI Scanner and saw the extreme amount of networks near by. Found an empty slot at 48 Ghz for 5 Ghz channel, and the most empty slot on the more than 15 networks with possible inteferance.
Thats it. Haven't had a fall out ever since

Hello Northwolf75. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you should be taking advantage of configuration profiles.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can store up to five different configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • ITunes can't connect to remote speakers PLUS Airport Express p/word problem

I am running iTunes 7.4.1 and have previously been able to play iTunes through remote speakers via an Airport Express . After upgrading iTunes some time ago, I am unable to connect to the AE any more. The AE shows as an option in my iTunes window, but when I select it from the drop down option box bottom right, it just doesn't choose it.
I have read other discussions pertaining to this, and have followed all of those solutions, but to no avail.
I have done a hard reset on the AE restoring it's factory settings thinking I should just start again, and it has been renamed "Base Station Oa369f" so I know this has worked, but when I try to reconfigure it through Airport Utility, it asks for a password. I tried it's old password, and also tried the generic one "public" as stated in the AE setup guide, but it rejects both.
I am keen to figure this out as I'm about to buy a new printer and another AE so I can print wirelessly, but don't want to have the same issues if it's an AE bug that can't be fixed, I would be left with no printer!
I know this is two quite separate problems, but if anyone has any ideas for either I would be really grateful.
    Thanks very much

I have exactly the same problem which has been driving me nuts for the last couple of days. However I am able to access the dropdown list of speakers. I have mine set to multiple speakers, and now it WILL play through my Airport Express again, but only when playing through the internal speakers at the same time. When I try to play solely through the Airport Express it just hangs.
Come on Apple, you need to be regression testing your upgrades far better than this, for something so basic to go wrong.

  • Connecting via Airport express: really annoying problem

I've got a really annoying problem that doesn't make much sense. Have an airport express and my network seems to work OK mostly. My iBook can always connect, never any problem. My eMac however is behaving bizzarely. The longer I'm connected, the worse my connection gets. Until it stops working altogether and I can't access the internet at all. System preferences tells me the Airport card is on, but is not connected to a network. Can still connect to it with the iBook.
Shut down, leave it a good while (a good while too, a short shut down doesn't do it), and it works again.
I can't even think where to start looking, all I can think of is that I have a problem with the Airport card in the eMac (something getting hot in there perhaps). Any ideas?

    Thanks,
I'm pretty sure the card is seated properly (it works most of the time after all). I couldn't get it to work when I installed it because it wasn't seated properly, I pushed it in as far as it could possibly go and it has worked since (except after extended periods of use). The Airport express is three feet from the eMac with only a couple of bits of wood between them. The connection does not go down at times which I can link with the use of any particular appliances (When the eMac stops working, the iBook is always fine, even in a similar position). It is the apparently time-dependent aspect that I can't figure out (I only notice it on those, fairly infrequent, occasions when I am online for a few hours at a time). The eMac discussion group is a good tip. Ta.

  • Second Airport Express Station Setup Problems

    Hello all,
I have a primary airport express station as my main wireless hub in the living room. It's physically connected to my cable modem as well as external speakers and works fine. I just purchased a second Airport express station and external speakers to set them up in my bedroom. I connected the new station to the A/C power and connected the speakers to it. Then went to my iMac and launched the Airport Utility to set up the second wireless station. I can see the second station (as well as the existing Living Room one) on the list of devices, but when I try to configure it, it asks me if I want to switch wireless networks (in order to configure this new station). I tell it to switch and then it times out telling me that I can't connect to the station (or wireless network).
I've tried to reset the new station and unplugging it and all the usual stuff to no avail. The living room station is still visible and working fine, but I cannot configure the new station to join the existing network and stream music to the speakers connected to it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: The old (living room) station is 802.11g, whereas the new one (bedroom) is 802.11n.
    --Gabriel

It's always a good idea to configure devices in close proximity to the "main" router and then move them to the desired location after they have been updated with new settings.
Perform a Factory Default Reset as follows on the AirPort Express (AX):
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it for 10-12 seconds while you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button and let the AX restart to a slow, blinking amber light after about 40-45 seconds
If available, temporarily connect a spare Ethernet cable from your computer to the AX so that you are using a wired connection rather than wireless
Setup the AX to "join" the wireless network and click Update to let the AX restart to a green light. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable.
Then move the AX to desired location. I assume that the AX will be located where it can receive a good quality wireless signal.

  • Airport Express 802.11n problem

I have an Airport Express 802.11n.
I use it to send iTunes from my mac on my stereo system in the adjacent room, via my wireless network. I don't use it all that often. It has worked fine over the two or so years I've had it
A couple of weeks ago I had a new BT Home Hub 5 installed, this may be just a coincidence but I tried to use my Airport Express 802.11n yesterday with no luck. All I get is an amber flashing light. I've plugged the Airport Express 802 into the mains right next to my imac but that has not helped. My Airport Utility doesn't find or show my Airport Express.
What do I do? Can anyone help?
    Hopefully
    Rob

    Here's an update:-
By re-setting my Airport Express 802 and updating the firmware, I can now get it to work when connected with an ethernet cable and changing my settings from DHCP to Bridge.
However, I still can't get it to work wirelessly.
Is this a known problem with the BT Home Hub 5 and BT Infinity?

  • 2 Airport Express - Bridge Mode problems

    Hi,
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but I've been searching and can't find a solution to the problem.
    I have:
MacBook Air running Mavericks and Airport Utility
Old Airport Express set up to create a wireless network
New Airport Express set up as bridged
Our apartment is hardwired with LAN ports in the walls, so there is no need for a modem and there are no router conflicts etc. I'm aware of.
Everything is fine with the Old AE as it's been for years.  When I connect the second AE which I want to set up in another room to extend the existing network it goes through all of the steps in the wizard OK but as soon as the second/bedroom AE completes setup and the light goes green the first AE in the living room drops out with orange flashing light and a "Conflicting DHCP Range" error.  I barely know what this is, let alone how to resolve it.  Whenever I find a community discussion I can find people talking about the same issue but no clear idea of how to resolve.
Any help would be massively appreciated.

Yeah fair comment, pretty remiss of me.
There was actually nothing wrong, but I was connecting the second AE to a LAN port with a cable as well. I mistook the drawings on the apple site for cable connections and assumed they all required it.
Just removed the Ethernet cable, ran set up again and was good to go.
