Airport Extreme "N" and sharing both a disk and a printer

I wanted to run a shared printer and a shared disk on my extremes and while I realize there was only 1 USB port, I wanted to know if I added a "powered" USB hub would it work. I tried it with a powered Belkin hub and was able to maintain both a shared printer and a shared disk on one of my extremes. If others try it, make sure you use a powered hub, and not one that draws it's power thru the USB port. I didn't need to do anything special, so if it does not work for you, it could be a combination of issues with the hub, disks, printers, etc. Next I am going to try one of the LaCie drives that include a USB hub. A powered USB hub runs in the 75 - 125 price range so the 320GB LaCie drive with USB hub at 169 seems like a good value if it will also work to add USB ports to the extreme. If anyone has tried this with the LaCie 320GB drive please post.

ok i am doing the same thing. i have a western digital 500 gig drive and a canon i9900 printer both connected to the airport 'n' using a cheapo powered usb hub from tiger direct. i think it was like 9 bux. that all works fine and has for some time. leopard has added some issues with reconnecting to the drive after the computer goes to sleep but i doubt this is hub related.
one thing to watch is the permissions are changed by the airport on the disk once you mount it there. if you then try to remove the drive and connect it to the computer you will have to modify [or check the ignore permissions box] the permissions.
and if i just unmount the drive from say within finder it will scream when i unplug the drive. i also have to use the airport utility to 'disconnect all users' before i unplug. after doing that the drive disappears from the finder, as opposed to showing it un-mounted.
i have 2 partitions one for my itunes library and one that is a boot-able clone. i have to connect the drive directly by firewire to make the clone [once per week] and until i started using the airport utility to disconnect i was having problems when i re-attched the drive after i cloned.

Bought an Apple Airport Extreme used and it did not come with any discs. Do i need any discs? or is there another way to setup this airport without using a software disc?

You can download the setup manual and software that you need.
Look on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme for the Model Number.  It's A.......  something.
Post back with the model number and the exact operating system you are running on your Mac or PC.

  • Airport Extreme n and airport express ...  No security ???

I have a new Airport Extreme N and two of the Airport Express ones, both using the 6.3 firmware. I can configure everything okay, all airports can be found and connected together.
My problem is that the network is open and anyone can join it ... The Extreme is configured to use WPA2 Personal but neither of the express ones are shown as using any encryption ... If I try to encrypt either of them they dissappear and I can't play my music remotely or find them in the utility.
I've tried the post that suggests removing the encryption on the extreme and then enabling the express, before finally enabling the extreme again. it didn't work ...
Any ideas what I'm doing so wrong ???

Right ... went to the Genius Bar who kind of pointed me in the right direction ... They told me however to use the old setup software ... This works fine with the express but not the extreme ... So basically use the new software.
My problem was cause by choosing the wrong option when setting up I started off aright by wetting up the extreme first with encrption enabled I was adding my express to the existing network but then choosing the next option that mentions Airtunes when I should have choosen the 'extend my network' option. This still allows you to use Airtune but doesn't say that ... The wizard then asks you to point to the base station and put in the password and then poblem solved ....... thanks for all you help ... and hope this helps someone else ..

  • Can't Connect to Internet using AirPort Extreme Card and DLink Router

I have tried just about everything, but I can't seem to connect my MAC OS X 10.3.9 to the internet. I am using the Airport Extreme Card and no networks show up. I am trying to connect to my DLink router. I was told by DLink that it is compatible with AirPort Extreme cards, but the guys at Best Buy were unable to connect to their wireless routers, other than their Mac Router. Please let me know if you have a solution! Thanks

    What Mac do you have?
Do you have iMac G5 or a Power Mac G5?
Did you install the AirPort Extreme card yourself?

In theory, yes. If you configure the two base station into either an extended or roaming network configuration, you should be able to walk a laptop between routers and the laptop should attempt to connect/reconnect to the base station providing the stronger signal ... but, in reality, this is not always 100% true.

  • Creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express

i am having trouble creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express. i got the airport express to connect to my network. Airtunes sees it fine. i have an iMac (running Tiger) connected to the airport express via ethernet which i was hoping to get internet on (the iMac doesn't not have built in wireless and i had a spare airport express). now the airport express is no longer visible to the airport setup assistant on that iMac. but, like i mentioned, Airtunes is working fine, and the light is green.
i'm new to the wireless stuff. i am sure i just missed a step. how do i get the iMac to connect to the internet via my airport express bridging to my airport extreme wireless network?
    your help is appreciated.

You can do this with the equipment you have. Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to act as a WDS main base station and configure the AirPort Express (AX) to act as a WDS remote base station. That will allow you to use the Ethernet port on the AX.
Unfortunately WDS also causes the available wireless bandwidth to be cut in half.

  • Set up roaming with Airport Extreme N and Airport Express N

The Apple pub "Designing Airport Networks" states you can connect an AirPort Extreme Base Station or a Time Capsule using Ethernet to create a roaming network.
I need someone out there to confirm that I can create a roaming network using an Airport Extreme N and an Airport Express N. Remember the two will be connected via Ethernet. All I want to do is walk from end to end of my (very long) house and have my laptop connect to the strongest signal. However, most publications and postings here seem to always focus on installing two Extreme Base Stations (not an Extreme and an Express).

OldNGray, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes you can do that. When you connect 2 base stations via Ethernet, you can easily create a large wireless network regardless of the manufacturer or model of the base stations.

  • Can't Setup WDS with Airport Extreme "N" and Airport Extreme "G" & Express

    Hi!
I'm trying my best and have done this stuff with the last model Airport Extreme "G" models, but cannot get my new "N" model to setup WDS. I log in to the new Airport and start configuring, it gives me the option to setup WDS, but it doesn't detect the Airport Extreme "G" model nor the Airport Express I have. The only way I can get them to be recognized is to configure them all identically with the same network name, password, etc. and have each hard-wired into an ethernet plug. Sort of defeats the point of going wireless. In the new Airport Utility, how do I get it to recognize the remote base stations? In the old Tiger Airport Utility, it used to configure the other airports for you. The Leopard one doesn't seem to do that. Any help?
    Thanks in advance!
    Corey

OK-so after more than a month of having to put up with my Airport Utility popping up whenever I started my computer or came home and joined the network, I finally had the time to sit on hold with Apple and work with a Network Specialist--had to get the ticket "Escalated" first. What the problem turned out being was I set up the Extreme "N" o use WEP (Transitional Security Network) because I occasionally have friends with older PCs coming by that need old WEP instead of WPA. The net specialist helped me walk through the whole setup (from scratch) with the Extreme "N" as my main base station (like I wanted) setup using WPA/WPA2 Personal for password encryption. The older Airport Extreme "G" and the Airport Express do NOT support the WEP (TSN) mode, so they couldn't join the network properly--thus the constant error from the Extreme "N" that no WDS base stations could be found.
Hope this info helps people in the future! I haven't seen anything around that says Extreme "G" and Express don't support this newer Transitional mode. Even the ever-so-helpful Apple Tech didn't know why that new Transitional mode was invented.
    Thanks for the reply, dhanneman.

  • Setting up airport extreme card and airport extreme base station

I have an ibook G4 about 3 years old with osx10.4.10 recently installed. I have recently bought an airport extreme card and have also bought an airport extreme base station.
There seems to be a problem with the set up of the card. It does not seem to find any wireless networks at all, including the base station. The base station seems to be working as I went through setting this up with Apple phone support and we managed to do it by connecting the laptop to the base station with an ethernet cable.
I think the problem is with the card. I think I need to reinstall and set up the card again from scratch, but can't figure out how to do this -aiport utility and airport setup assistant don't seem to help here as they take you straight to the stage of setting up a base station. I seem to remember when I originally installed the card for the very first time (before attempting to set up the base station) that it did find other wireless networks, so I don't think there is a physical problem with the card.
Any suggestions on getting the card working appreciated.
    Many thanks

Hello bblairlondon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, verify if OS X "recognizes" the card, by using the System Profiler utility. Select the AirPort Card option under Network in the column on the left. The "Wireless Card Type" should be "AirPort Extreme (nxnnnn, nxnnnn)."
If no card appears, I suggest that you double-check your AirPort Extreme Card installation by using the following Apple Tech article: iBook G4: CIP Instructions
If the card does appear, then try the following ...
    Reset the PRAM
    o Shut down the computer.
    o Turn on the computer.
o Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
o Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    o Release the keys.

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n sharing a disk with a -1 on the mount point

First I have to reboot the device once a day because of the disk that disconnect for no reason like many other on the list ever since I upgraded to 7.2.1 but not sure that as to do with this problem.
Here's is the deal, I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n with a 500GB shared on the USB port. I want to use my iPhoto Library on the 500GB. It's about 11GB, I have tranfered the library over and iPhoto is asking to choose the library I want to use. When I try to point it to the 500GB everything is greyed out. When I use a terminal and do a df command to show the mount point on my computer, I get
    /Volumes/500GB-1
Why and where the -1 is coming from?
How can I get /Volumes/500GB only?
One thing I have noticed about the -1 is when I loose the disk connection it prompt me to disconnect 500GB-1 but sometime even with a -2 and -3.
    Thx!

can I hook up my printer, scanner and external harddrive through a usb hub?
Partially, a large number of USB printers will work with the AirPort Base Stations' USB port, but not all. I suggest that you checkout the following iFelix site to see if your printer is compatible. Similiarly, most external USB hard drives should work as well.
However, devices that rely on two-way communications, like copiers and scanners, won't work when connected to the USB port.

  • AirPort Extreme, TimeMachine and external disks

    Hi folks,
Have done some searching on this, but unfortunately haven't been able to answer my question, so over you to kind people to try and help me if at all possible!
I have purchased an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) which works fine. Also purchased a 1TB external hard disk for backup/TimeMachine purposes. If I connect the external USB drive directly to my MacBook, TimeMachine will do its thing without any problem.
However, if I plug the external disk into the AirPort Extreme, although it is visible to the AirPort utility, TimeMachine cannot see the disk at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move your TM backups to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • Need airport extreme card (and installation disk?) for OS X 10.2.4

So when I got my emac in 2003 it didn't come with an airport extreme card. but now I need to get online and am unable to hook up with a landline to our current, only wireless, router. I can't upgrade my OS X and spend tons of money for ram and the new card. So I'm looking for the card that would work with my version of OS X. Please give me any info or websites, I haven't had any luck myself!

LaurieP, Welcome to the discussion area!
The version of OS X installed has nothing to do with which card you need.
The original eMacs require the original AirPort card. That is the only card compatible with the internal slot.
Later eMacs require the AirPort Extreme card. That is the only card compatible with the internal slot.
You can determine which eMac you have by using KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model. The "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB 2.0)", and "eMac (2005)" all require the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Airport Extreme - iMac and PC on the same network

Hello, I have one iMac and one PC sharing the same Internet connection and both computers are getting IP addresses via DHCP, which is configured on the Airport Extreme, for the local network. The Internet connection is working fine for both computers. The iMac and the PC can also ping the Airport Extreme ip address with no problems. The issue is that the two computers cannot ping each other.
    Some facts:
    - On the DHCP I configured the DHCP lease starting from 192.168.1.2 and ending with 192.168.1.10. The router has ip address 192.168.1.1, the iMac has ip address 192.168.1.2 and the PC 192.168.1.3.
    - The iMac connects to the AE via wireless and the PC via cable. I already disabled the wireless network and connected the imac via cable without any change on the situation (iMac does not ping the PC and the PC does not ping the iMac).
Any suggestion or hint is really appreciated!

I can ping between Macs through my Time Capsule. You might check the firewall settings on both sides.

  • Airport Extreme stops screen sharing

    Hi All,
I recently purchased an Airport Extreme to replace the existing D-Link WiFi router I had which was pretty unreliable (needed restarting at least daily).
Everything is set up and working fine except for screen sharing to a headless mac mini I have.
The set up is a mac mini running Lion server and a MacBook Air running Lion (and now Mountain Lion). Everything was working fine between the two using the D-Link (and still does if I remove the Airport and plug the D-Link back in). I've restarted everything after setting up the Airport Extreme. Looking at the Airport Utility 6.1 there aren't any settings that look useful.
This setup is only designed to work over the local WiFi network. I'm not trying to set up a remote connection over the internet at this stage.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ian

I just bought an airport extreme and now have the same screen sharing problem. It had been working without problems beforehand. I use a Macbook Pro, OS 10.8.2, to connect to a Mac Mini running the same OS. I'd read elsewhere that iCloud can conflict, so I deleted iCloud accounts (as instructed) on both computers, but it did not solve the problem. It appears that it is caused by the Aiport Extreme.
