Airport Extreme 'n' and USB External modem

Hello all,
I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n simultaneous dual-band base station with a USB disk plugged into the back through a hub. It's connected to my network that comes from my 802.11b/g Airport Extreme Snow "saucer" model that I have to have because I can't get DSL/cable where I live, so I use the built-in modem to access the internet.
Can I add the USB External modem to the newer Extreme and still access the internet through it, or is that basically a lost cause? I'd like to move to the new one because 'n' would be faster to do my time machine backups.

The USB cellular modem you are referring to would be a device like this:
http://www.cradlepoint.com/products/cba250-cellular-broadband-adapter
Your USB adapter would plug into the Cradlepoint and the Cradlepoint would provide an ethernet signal to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme. That's the only way this type of setup will work.

  • Sharing Internet via Airport Extreme using a USB wireless modem

I have had to go to NextG access using a USB modem (only option). We previously succesfully had the second iMac sharing the internet connection on an ethernet-connected wireless service. Now, I cannot get the other iMac to share the connection, because there is no option to choose the USB modem.
Another problem is the USB modem is top-dog - it won't connect unless I turned off anything else using anything remotely looking like wireless (even when I have my bluetooth phone connected to another USB hub). I can connect to the NextG network after disconnecting everything else and THEN reconnect, but I just can't get the Internet sharing going. I have also had the iMac freezing, demanding a power-off-power-on (unheard of in my experience!).
Is there any remedy for the Internet sharing at all? Configuring a different channel or something on Airport? Using one of the other config options?
I think there are something like USB-to-Ethernet adaptors (pretty costly here in Australia) and don't want to shell out for one if it doesn't work. Same with a third-party router. I also wondered if I should just forget about using Airport completely and run a few metres of crossover cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Steven, I know this question has been answered and is a couple of months old but I think you may be able to help with my set up? I have a Thomson speedtouch 510 v6 modem router provided by Karoo (UK). My other Belkin N modem router has just bust [again] so the Speedtouch is my old faithful backup device. Now, i've never been able to get on ichat with the Belkin as its a mimo n speed and this is apparently not compatible; So i'm now on ethernet with the st510 and have just set up ports for ichat thanks to a thread called http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2719419&#2719419.
What I want to know from you (because I really need a wireless router to get me off this ethernet support system and back on airport) is how you're getting on with the st510 / airport extreme combo now and can you use ichat on it? If so does your connection doctor say full cone in network settings or something else? As I say, I really want to use ichat and have never been able to in 3 years of owning my Macbook Pro. Hope to hear back from you Steven. Regards Steph

  • Airport time capsule and usb external drives

Just purchased airport time capsule.  Questions about using external drives through the usb port on the airport.
    - If I am using a powered USB hub should I be able to connect multiple drives?
    - Is there a performance/speed difference between going through the usb port on the airport vs. usb hub to the usb slot on the Powerbook
    - When I thried one of my external drives it did not display on the desxtop.  Instead it was a "folder" in the Airport Time Cabsule.  Is this normal?
    Thanks

If I am using a powered USB hub should I be able to connect multiple drives?
Yes, if the drives are formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 16/32.
Is there a performance/speed difference between going through the usb port on the airport vs. usb hub to the usb slot on the Powerbook
Yes. The USB port on your Mac is probably twice as fast as the port on the AirPort.
When I thried one of my external drives it did not display on the desxtop.  Instead it was a "folder" in the Airport Time Cabsule.  Is this normal?
Yes. The drive connected to the Time Capsule is a shared network drive.  Only drives that connect to your Mac directly via USB or FireWire will appear by default on the desktop.  If you try to use Disk Utility with a network drive.....you will not see the drive.

  • Airport extreme eathernet  and USB HD

My AEBS works great, and the HD works great wirelessly. However, the computer I have connected via eathernet to the APEBS doesnt see the HD. Any suggestions?

Make sure that your computer is connected to one of the LAN ports on the AEBS.
What OS is the computer running that is connected via Ethernet?

  • Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB Hard drive?  My MacBook recognizes it.  I already have had a great deal of trouble connecting my printer to print wirelessly, but finally resolved that.  Now I want to add the external drive with a USB por

Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB external hard drive.  I put a USB port on the base station, and the system recognizes my printer.  When I click on disks - it lists my printer, and when I click on Printers it lists my printer.  What do I need to do to get it to recognize the external drive?  BTW, the MacBook recognizes it, no problem.  I have erased it and reformatted it.  I am running the new Lion OS.  Any help is appreciated.

Yes, I saw a post on one of these threads about a powered USB hub so I ran over to Office Depot and picked one up.  I was finally able to see the HD in the Airport Utility.  Yay!

  • Airport Extreme won't recognize external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've searched and search and tried everything, but my airport extreme refuses to recognize my external harddrive. I'm wanting to set it up so my time machine so it will back up automatically - basically a poor student's version of a time capsule. Please - I'm getting desperate - nothing I've found on-line has helped. Thanks!!!

I have just completed hooking up my airport extreme to my seagate external drive. I have the newer version mb763lla airport. After hooking everything up, I created a homebase network, and Initially my two windows computers would not recognize the drive, in my computer. I plugged a usb jump drive in to the router to check if the router required drives to be formatted fat32 and the jump drive worked, jump drives are formatted to fat32, so I knew my problem was the format of external drive. Then I knew I needed to format my drive to fat32, so I looked around the internet trying to find the best way to do so. What I discovered is that if you go to the website of your external drive, they generally have software to help you format your drive. Seagate has discwizard, and I noticed Western Digital has some too. I choose to format my drive with two partitions one fat32 and one ntfs. I was under the impression from some of the websites I visited that I would have problems with vista & fat32, so I used a windows xp computer to run the format software from seagate. I plugged the usb external 320gb freeagent seagate hard drive directly into the xp computer, to format it. After running the software I restarted my computer, and the drive worked, and I could now find the drive on both my xp and my vista computers. It did assign different drives, on the xp the drive is called y: on the vista the drive is called z: . Both computers can write or read to the fat32 partition of the drive.

  • Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Have you tried resetting the modem? Power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again.
Also, some ISPs require physically detaching their cable from the modem for it to be fully reset. Literally unscrew it from the modem. Try that, in conjunction with powering it down.
Don't do anything with your Extreme, other than powering it down too, in the event the modem reset does not help. Reconfiguring it may be necessary but this is not justified quite yet.

  • I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  How can I password protect certain files?

I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  I have it set up so my Macbook Pro and PC's in the house can access it.  i have some files that i would like to protect(sensitive personal info.).  Is there a way that can be done where as certain folders are password protected?  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Would a good workaround be to use disk utility to set up a password protected sparse image, of course being connected directly to the Mac, then connect the drive to the Airport Extreme?
Then, couldn't one use that drive and protected files as normal on the airport? It would just require one extra step of using a Mac to set things up first.
I disconnected my Airport so cannot check it out for myself.

  • Fax modem won't work - Apple USB external modem

I am new to Mac, well relatively.... It's been 8 years, and now I am back!!
Anyway, I got an iMac 3 weeks ago, and love it. However, I can't get my external modem/fax modem working. I bought the Apple USB external modem, hooked it up, setup a fax printer, and NOTHING. I try to print to the fax and it won't even dial. I call the fax number, and it won't answer. I know it's a live phone line b/c I can hook it up to my fax machine and it works fine, both for incoming and outgoing messages. Is there a trick? Do I have to set up an actual external modem interface in the networks panel just to use an existing phone line? Thanks for your help....

You actually need to configure your iMac as a fax machine to send and receive faxes through the Apple USB modem.
    From Faxing in Mac Help in the Finder Help menu;
*To set up your Mac to receive faxes*:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Print & Fax.
    2. Select the fax modem in the Printers list.
    3. Type your fax number in the Fax Number field. This is used to identify your computer when you send or receive a fax.
    4. If you want to control your computer’s fax functions from the menu bar, select “Show fax status in menu bar.” If you don’t want to receive faxes automatically, you must select this option. If you receive faxes automatically, you may want to select this option so you can view status information more easily.
    5. Click Receive Options.
    6. Select “Receive faxes on this computer,” and choose the number of rings before your computer answers a fax.
    a. If you want to receive faxes automatically, make sure your computer answers the phone before any other device that may be connected to it, such as a phone answering machine.
    b. If you don’t want to receive faxes automatically, set the number of rings to the highest number possible, and use the Fax status menu to receive faxes manually.
    7. Choose what to do with the fax after it arrives; you can save it as an image file, email it, and print it to a printer.
    *To send a fax:*
    1. Choose File > Print, and then choose Fax PDF from the PDF pop-up menu.
    2. Type the fax number in the To field, or click the Address Book button to the right of the To field to select a number. If you want to paste a number into the To field and the Edit > Paste command isn’t available, hold down the Control key as you click the To field and choose Paste from the menu that appears.
    3. If your phone system requires you to dial a prefix for an outside line, type it in the Dialing Prefix field.
    4. If you want to include a cover page, select “Use Cover page” and enter a subject and message.
    5. Make sure the correct fax device is selected from the Printer pop-up menu.
    6. To change your options, choose the option category from the print options pop-up menu. For example, to choose your modem’s behavior when faxing, choose Fax Modem. You can choose whether to dial with touch tones or pulse tones, whether to listen to the modem as it dials, and whether to wait for a steady dial tone before dialing.
    7. Click Fax.

  • Airport Extreme N and Airport Express G

I have an Airport Extreme version N with which I connect to the Internet and and old Airport Express G that I use to stream music to my living room.
I recently went on a trip and used the Airport Express to connect to the Internet. I had to reset it but was successful (with the help of this forum).
Now I'm back home. I can see two networks on my airport menulet (in the menu bar). When I connect to the old network, I can't see the Airport Express with Airport Utility. On holding the option key I see I am connected by 802.11n.
I can also connect to the "new" network, the one I created to connect to the internet with the Airport Express and I can connect to the Internet via the Airport Extreme, to which my cable modem is connected. On holding down the option key on the Airport Menu item it shows 802.11g but I can stream music to the airport express and I can see both airports in the Airport Utility. Strangely the airport express is blinking amber.
Is the blinking amber light normal? I believe it was green before I reset it to connect to the Internet. Am I connecting to the Internet at the lower G speed as noted?

I recently went on a trip and used the Airport Express to connect to the Internet. I had to reset it but was successful (with the help of this forum).
Now I'm back home. I can see two networks on my airport menulet (in the menu bar).
If you had performed a "hard" or "factory default" reset, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) would fall back to its default mode which is to provide a wireless network. This is the reason that you are now seeing two networks when you brought the AX back.
If your goal with the AX is for only streaming, then I would recommend that you reconfigure it to "Join a wireless network." In this case the wireless network created by the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
The following would be the basic instructions to configure your AX for iTunes streaming:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive?

Can Time Capsule backup an Airport Extreme's attached USB hard drive (without currently being attached to a MAC OSX LION system)?

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

  • Airport extreme wont work with dhcp modem

    Hello,
my airport extreme quits to work with my adsl modem after several hours (one night), the internet connection is gone even when the light is still green, maybe after the internet provider changes ip?
I am using wireless lan to get the connection.
If I then take out the cable from my modem and put it directly into my computer via ethernet, internet signal is there and everything works fine. Sometimes, restarting the airport extreme station and putting out/in the ethernet cable, helps and the internet signal is there for a whole day, but next morning same procedure..
    Thanks
    Stefan

Think you are suffering from the same problem that '000s of AEB 802.11n users have. I have tried every fix shown on Discussions and nothing has proved to be permanent.
It is said that Apple is aware of the issue and a permanent fix is coming with 10.5.5 to be released soon. Hope this is right because it is driving me nuts.
Are you really using 10.4.11 - if so, don't know what your fix is.

  • I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached (non-airprint).  Can i print from my ipad?

I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached, it is a non airprint printer.
I can print via my network from my desktop but I want to know if i can print from my ipad 2 and ipad 1

Printing from an iPad or iPhone
To print directly from an iPad you need an AirPrint - enabled printer on the same wireless network as the iPad. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are AirPrint-enabled.
If you do not have an AirPrint printer, a number of workarounds exist that enable the use of any printer you normally use, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades. Search for the following products:
    handyPrint (Mac only, donation-supported)
Printopia (Mac only, $19.95 with free trial)
These are utilities you install on the Mac you normally use for printing, enabling it to act as an AirPrint print server. The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. The iPad needs nothing else, no iOS apps need to be installed and no configuration is necessary. If your computer can print, so can the iPad, using one of these utilities on your Mac.
Equivalent utilities may exist for PCs but I have no experience with them - I suggest https://www.collobos.com
You can also buy this standalone hardware print server, bypassing the need for a computer altogether:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • 2 airport extremes, PC and MBP...

Hello all...  Thaks in advance for al your help..   I have 2 airport extremes throughout my house, and the wifi seems to work pretty good.  I have a desktop PC hard wired from a an 8 port switch which in turn in hard wired to one of the expresses.    My pc can not detect airport utilities (keep in mind, hardwired)...  also, I want to add an external hard drive so we can stream movies on the i pad and such.  Would it matter which of the 2 airport extremes I place the external hard drive onto??  Thanks.. Richard

Ok thanks for providing the network details. I believe I understand your configuration now. As far as the Extreme base station they should all be good with them all interconnected by Ethernet. The only issue I see is the Extreme in the laundry room as far as it signal quality. If there are large metal boxes (washer & dryer) these are not going to let the Wi-Fi signal travel very far and could case some of the signal to "echo" back towards the base station.
However before making any changes it would be a good idea to establish a signal quality baseline of your existing setup. From there we can make some suggested changes to see if any help improve the overall bandwidth for streaming.
The other area we will look into will be data transfer rates between some of your network equipment to see where there may be some bottlenecks.
Let's stay with signal quality for now. What we are going to want to measure is the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at various locations where you will use network clients for either or both Internet access and for streaming.
Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on how to take these measurements. The will work best if yoiu have a laptop. The goal is to get a SNR reading of 25+ dB at each of these locations. This will tell us that you are getting decent siqnal quality at each of the locations that do. Please post back your results.
