Airport Extreme N bridged to Airport Extreme B/G Possible?

I have a network with most devices served wirelessly via a new(ish) AEBS using 802.11N.  Older devices capable only of B/G get their wireless service via an older Airport Express that's connected to the AEBS via ethernet and set to act as a bridge.
I have my wireless music served via newer Airport Expresses (as AirTunes clients to the AEBS) using 802.11N, together with one 2nds Gen Apple TV for video & audio.
I now need to connect to the network two non-wireless devices that are co-located but nowhere near to an ethernet cable.
I considered using an older B/G Airport Express, setting it as a WDS remote (with the existing Express as the WDS main) - which I understand is necessary to make the ethernet port,  but this does not seem to be able to serve an address from the main AEBS using DHCP.  (I tried with fixed addresses for both the Expresses and the device that I am trying to connect, but it doesn't seem to work - even though the WDS remote does have a fixed green light.)
Finally my question: somewhere I have an older AEBS (the 'flying saucer' shape).  Would I have more luck in using this at the remote location - or even using two of them since I think I have two - and how would I configure?  [I know that I could use an N Express, but I would need two and that would be expensive.  The devices need Internet access, but not for fast throughput.]
To summarise:
AEBS N -> wireless clients
    |
(ethernet)
    |
Airport Express G -> wireless clients
    |
(wireless)
    |
? -> 2 new devices that ideally need DHCP served addresses

Thank you Bob
I have taken your advice and reverted to DHCP from the AEXP do the address assignment to both Expresses, and I have taken great care with the WDS setup, but still it doesn't work.
Looking at the logs on the WDS main, this is what I see (the station referred to being the WDS remote):
May 10 19:49:34          Severity:5          Deauthorizing station 00:11:24:01:15:97 [2]
May 10 19:49:54          Severity:5          Deauthenticated with station 00:11:24:01:15:97 (4-way timeout)
(This is even with a solid green on both Expresses.)
HOWEVER: I have just tried rebooting both of them - main followed by remote - and now they seem to have realised what they're supposed to be doing and both have IP addresses.   This is on my desk.  The next step is to see whether I can get an IP address on a device attached by wire.
They do say patience is a virtue.  I can testify to that being true with WDS!

  • Airport extreme - is it possible to limit the range of access? I am wondering if I could limit the range to a few rooms downstairs of where it sits. It is not our main connection to the internet but an extending device.

airport extreme - is it possible to limit the range of access?

Sorry, you would need a 5.x version of AirPort Utility to limit the Transmit Power of the AirPort Extreme.......AND.....you would need to have an AirPort Extreme version that is flat, square shaped.
The newer version of the AirPort Extreme looks like a tower.  Like the picture below. The Transmit Power can NOT be adjusted on that model:
I would not recommend that you "update" to Yosemite. Too many bugs.
It is possible to limit that times each day that a wireless device will be allowed to connect to the wireless network, so that might be a possibility.  Example, you could limit Junior's iPad to the hours of 5 PM to 9 PM each day.  He would not be able to connect to the network at any other time.
Unfortunately, it won't take him long to find another network, or if its an iPhone, he can use 3G or 4G.

  • Will I be able to use my Airport Extreme model A1143 with Xfinity's ARRIS model TG862G/CT wireless modem? If so, how? I want to keep my airport network setting if possible.

Comcast has been hounding me to upgrade to their newer modem in order to obtain maximum bandwidth with changes they've made. They sent me an ARRIS Wi-Fi modem (model TG862G/CT). I was not expecting the modem to have wireless and would prefer using my Airport Extreme (model A1143). I have not attempted to connect the new ARRIS yet. Should I send the ARRIS back or is there an easy way to make use of it while keeping my Airport Extreme fully functional?

Thanks, I will look up "bridge mode" after I log off here. In the mean time, what if I were to simply buy the newest AE—will I still be able to use "bridge mode"? I imagine Comcast would prefer that I use their equipment and will eventually leave me no choice, but until that happens I would prefer to use Apple's AE. What is your expert take on this?
Any AE will be able to do bridge. There is actually very little difference between your ancient AE and the latest AE in terms of functionality.. Apple is minimalist.. so change can be avoided.. no need to add functions that were always missing.
I was thinking the printers are USB?? Is that incorrect.. are they wireless or ethernet? Any native network printer can be simply connected to any router.. it will perhaps be slightly easier in an Apple environment to use them on an apple router but the difference should not be huge..
USB on the other hand is tricky.. you will need to use some router that allows print serving from USB.. that still works fine whether the AE is bridged or in router mode.
Netflix is no problem either.. (assuming you are not trying to bust a geo-block).. the actual netflix login is stored in the TV.. the only security info on the AE is the wireless connection and that can be swapped to any wireless router. No biggie.. geoblocking is a biggie.. tell me if that is the case.
It is really up to you.
    1. Do nothing.. let Comcast squark all they like.. they are still providing you a service you can use. They are not going to cut you off if you still keep paying the bills.
    2. Change the modem for the new one they sent.. this involves a lot of network modification .. but in view of the age of the current devices.. will have to happen in the near future regardless.
    3. Return the modem router and request a pure modem.. to give you as little network impact as possible. You will simply change old modem for new one. However at some point the Gen1 or 2 AE will die.. and the rest of the network will need updating.. you are putting off d-day. Modern wireless routers have come a long way since Gen1 or 2 AE.
Take your pick.. Bob says 3. I say 2 or 3. It makes little difference as at some point the network needs a refresh.

  • Port forwarding/adding IPcamera via Airport Extreme Can't possibly be this complex, can it?

Any other new router has WPS (that youcan disable to rpevent hackers) and lets you connect to IP cameras.  Not AE. I use apple because I am not a programmer.  Am I missing something, or is Apple?  Suggestions appreciated.

I do appreciate your response, but it kinda goes back to my original post--  I am not programmer or geek (NO offense intended, we all need geeks and they're generaly very nice folks)-- I use apple because it works-- now I need to do work arounds and install old software through a third party vendor.....
I think I'm just gonna get a new, non-airport, router.  Their speeds are faster and connectivy is simpler.
I hated typing that.  I love Apple, but this is just isn't what I signed up for.
    Again, Thanks.

  • 3G MiFi -- Airport Express -- Ethernet client possible? Getting error 6753

    Hi All,
I am really struggling setting up a friends Airport Express (new N series version).
I told him to buy an Airport Express to allow his Home Cinema Amplifier (Denon AVR 1912) to gain access to his wireless network/internet (via Ethernet cable). This is to use Airplay, as well as the Denon remote app on his iPhone.
His WiFi at home is provided by a Three MiFi device made by Huawei (http://store.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi)
His PC connects to the WiFi generated by this unit using an N series USB dongle fine. His, and my iPhone connect to the MiFi's WiFi ok too.
Using the Airport utility it sees the Airport Express, and I set it up to JOIN an existing wireless network (typing in the correct wifi password), and have 'allow ethernet clients' ticked. This is also named proxySTA mode I have read.
After setting this, the Airport Utility disconnects from his home WiFi, connects to the Airports WiFi, but then after this I constantly get error -6753. Firewall is turned off so I do not feel it is a security issue. I get flashing amber light on the Airport, or if green light it still will not provide his Denon amplifier with an ip address (Denon amplifier set to use DHCP)
The web server application running on the MiFi device shows an ip address given to the Airport Express fine (same ip address as the Airport utility shows)
Taking the airport express to my house I was eventually able to set it up to connect to my WiFi, and have a laptop connected to the Airport Express via an Ethernet cable to provide the laptop with network/internet access...so I know this set-up is definately possible.
Anyway, does anyone know if doing this with one of these MiFi type products is possible with the Airport Express please? I would tell him to buy an Airport Extreme if that is the solution.

Does anyone know if an Airport Express has any advantage over something like a Netgear Universal WIFI Adapter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-Universal-Wifi-Internet-Adapter/dp/B003VIWJYI/re f=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332407475&sr=8-1)
for what he is trying to use it for, i.e. WiFi --> AV Equipment's Ethernet port.

  • Dual band with Time Capsule extending AirPort Express - is it possible?

    Hi all!
I have an Early 2009 Time Capsule and an Early 2010 AirPort Express.
Currently the AirPort Express is downstairs where the broadband connection enters the house, broadcasting at 5Ghz Wireless N only. Extending it is the TC upstairs which broadcasts the signal as Wireless B/G/N 2.4ghz and Wireless N 5 Ghz. This is because the TC has greater range so if it is in the middle of the house it will reach pretty much everywhere, or so I thought.
I would like to put the TC back in two network mode (2.4 and 5 ghz) because my macbook keeps switching to the 2.4ghz network, decreasing latency and throughput even more. Is there a way to have the AirPort Express channel the 100mb internet to the TC but still have the TC broadcasting in dual network mode so as to reach the whole house with maximum throughput? And would it be possible to have the AirPort Express also broadcast at 2.4ghz G to use my iPod touch and older laptop there? Currently its broadcasting at 5ghz because otherwise the TC extends the 2.4ghz which makes the whole setup much slower.
    Thanks in advance,
    Wessel

Is there a way to have the AirPort Express channel the 100mb internet to the TC but still have the TC broadcasting in dual network mode so as to reach the whole house with maximum throughput?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. The AirPort Express can only broadcast a single band at one time, not dual bands. If you have the TC setup to "extend a wireless network", the TC will only extend the signal that it receives, which is a single band signal from the AirPort Express.
And would it be possible to have the AirPort Express also broadcast at 2.4ghz G to use my iPod touch and older laptop there?
As we pointed out, the AirPort Express is a single band device. It can broadcast a 2.4 GHz signal or a 5 GHz signal, +but not both simultaneously+. So, if the Express is broadcasting 5 GHz, it cannot also broadcast 2.4 GHz at the same time.
To do what you want, you need an simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme in place of the AirPort Express. The Extreme will broadcast both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously, and if your TC is a simultaneous dual band device, it will extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 Hz bands.

When configured to extend a wireless network, the simultaneous dual-band TC can only extend either the 2.4 OR the 5 GHz radio of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), depending on which Radio Mode you have the AXn configured for. To be able to extend both bands, you would need another simultaneous dual-band TC or AirPort Extreme ... and only if both bands are within range of each other. That is, if the two routers are too far apart, you may end up only extending the 2.4 GHz network.
Your TC will ALWAYS operate on both bands separately. The only difference is, whether or not, you want to use the same Network Name (aka SSID) or not.

  • Stream music from iPhone to AirPort Express without network possible?

For an event I want to send music directly to my Aiport Express with AirTunes which of course is plugged into an amplifier/mixer connected to the speakers.
This way I can roam and control the music.  Is this possible without a network created by a router?  Can one effectively make a direct connection from an iOS device to the Aiport Express; and ad-hoc connection perhaps?

Thanks for the update - I am only familiar with networks and this is actually an iPhone/iTunes question so I would suggest that you re-word your question and re-submit it on the appropriate forum - that being said, if you can do what you want to do with an Express attached to the internet then you can do it this way - however keep in mind that the only audio output on Express is for a regular audio cable or an optical cable - I hope this helps.

The EIZo S2111W is my work screen and the Dell is just for pallets etc.
The Eizo connects direct by DVI cable, the Eizo uses a DVI/VGA adaptor from Apple.
So the other day I grab the VGA cable to help a friend and let the DELL chill out for a while. I noticed later that Bridge didn't show previews, kinda crashed, loosing menu bars etc, like perhaps it was trying to display on the Dell. But I didn't realise that, or the cable connection with the Bridge problem until I plugged the cable back in later and noticed Bridge previews working again. Tonight I did the same and noticed same problem, and fix again. I have been thinking about moving from the 20inch Eizo & Dell combo to a nice 30" NEC. Alas, with this problem I may always be forced to have a dual setup... Long live the Dell?
Just wanted to share this strange but at least somewhat solved mystery.
PS the video card in the Mac pro ATO Radeon HD2600 has always been weird. Used to get some wild displays going when i was batching big PS jobs. Gone now.

I just had the idea of switching the gpu (System Prefs - Energy Saver - Better Battery life or Better Performance). Changing from one to the other will force you to log out and back in. Now Bridge is working. I switched back and it's still working so maybe you just need to log out or restart.
No solution, but I'm having the same problem. Just updated to 4.0.4.1. I'm guessing there because I didn't check the number, but I ran the update a couple days ago and went to use Bridge today... I repaired permissions, installed another update today (4.0.4.2) and tried resetting Bridge (option key at start) and nothing has fixed it.

  • Bridge to bridge and bridge to access-point is it possible

here;s my topology i am trying to configure. i have a router whose ethernet is connected to a bridge.this bridge 1 is connected to a bridge 2 via wireless. now i am trying to connect a access-point via wireless to this bridge2. is it possible for bridge 2 to support connectivity to the bridge1 and the access-point both of them via wireless.
can someone pls help me on this.
    waiting for someone to reply.
    regards

Take a look at my suggested config below. The first accesspoint will broadcast a SSID for clients and use a different SSID for the bridge. This setup has no 802.1x mechanism yet, but you can add that later. For the topology see PtoPLinkExample.gif posted earlier.

  • How do you set up an Airport Extreme to extend the range of a Verizon router?

Basically I want to know if the new Airport Extreme can be used fro extend the range of a Verizon modem/router?

Not by wireless. The apple routers can act as repeaters only to another apple router.
You can use ethernet or homeplug (EOP adapter) to place the Airport in another location where you need wireless and set it up in bridge mode.
Or you can buy another airport.. a cheap second hand extreme is very possible.. plug that into  the Verizon by ethernet and extend with the second apple wireless.. but nope.. you cannot do it directly.

  • Time Machine doesn't see new AirPort Extreme

My old Time Capsule died. Hardware failure. Too bad. So I bought a new one, a 2TB AirPort Extreme. 'Upgraded' to OSX 10.9.1 (which crippled a lot of my software, and seems generally more buggy & slower than 10.6.8, but that's beside the point) just to be able to administer it. Setting up the WiFi network was easy. Fine.
Now when I go into Time Machine preferences and click on the "select backup disk" button, the new AirPort Extreme is not listed. There is an option for "Other Time Capsule." If I click on that, the AirPort Extreme shows up. OK. If I click on it, I get a window with IP info, etc. There's an option to "edit". Clicked on that but found nothing about setting up the Time Capsule. I tried clicking on the disks tab, but that returns an empty list of partitions and file-sharing options.
I tried reseting the device with the little button on the back and starting again. Same story. What am I missing?
To be clear, I am not trying to use an external disk. I am trying to use the 2TB disk I am told is inside the AirPort Extreme.

Is it possible to know from the serial number whether I have a misbehaving Time Capsule presenting itself as an AP Extreme, unaware of the hard disk it conceals, or a perfectly functional AP Extreme?
That would be a question for Apple Support.
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
If you can locate a model number on the device....it might be on the bottom in very small print.......it will start with an "A" followed by four numbers.....we can tell you what you have.
But a clue might be that an AirPort Extreme sells for about $200.  A Time Capsule sells for $300-400 depending on the size of the internal hard drive.
And to anyone from Apple reading this, could you please make your new software compatible with hardware you produced in last 3 yrs?
It is extremely unlikely that anyone from Apple will ever see your post on a user-to-user support forum.  Best to contact Apple directly with your comments:

  • Can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option.

can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option. i want to have both the airport extremes to use a single imac for streaming music or video to my apple tv's at different places where one apple tv is in the range of one airport extreme.it's not a problem if both airport extremes have different wifi id's with separate internet. The imac which i use for streaming the music and videos is only in the range of only one airport extreme.is it possible if i can stream music or videos to my apple tv which is not in the range of same airport extreme which i use for imac but in the range of other airport extreme.
Finally what i need is i want to use two internet networks as my highest possible internet bandwidth is about 1mbps.and i know that i cant mix both the networks and make it as 2mbps.

Yes, that is possible. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on how.

  • Airport Extreme to extend wireless – How best to set this up?

I added an Airport Extreme to my ISP Service provider box in order to extend my home / home office networking capabilities. Currently I have a MBP (May 2010 model) with ethernet & wireless; a PBG4 (Feb 2005 model) with ethernet & wireless; an eMac (Feb 2005 model) with JUST ethernet; and an iPad3 (March 2012) with of course just wireless. But I am not certain that I have set this up optimally.  Here's what I have done and if anyone could comment on this it would be greatly appreciated!
I have my ISP's modem "B-box" (which has 2 ethernet ports OUT plus its own Wireless) which I have used the past year.  The problem is range for wireless and extending ethernet (via cable) to the 3 levels of the house.  So I added an Airport Extreme to solve that issue and believe I am almost there!  The house has 3 levels and I will call them Level A (basement, underground); Level B (ground floor) and Level C (upstairs).  Without Airport Extreme it is possible to get wireless on on 3 levels, but it drops-out often in my main, office (Level-A) location so that was the incentive to get good wireless everywhere using the Airport Extreme.
    Here's my setup today:
ISP "B-box" (as it is called) located on Level B and emits a wireless signal and I have called that SteveBelWiFi     ---There is an ethernet cable that goes down to Level A.
On Level A I have my home office with a MacBook Pro-13" (May 2010) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  The Ethernet cable from the B-box arrives in my office and is plugged into the WAN port of my new Airport Extreme.
From this Airport extreme I have the following setup: (there are 3 ethernet out ports on the Airport Extreme - 5th generation - most recent model)
Ethernet cable #1 plugged into my MBP
Ethernet cable #2 running to Level C where it is plugged into an eMac (Feb 2005)
A USB cable going from the USB Out port on the Apple Extreme to an unpowered USB hub
From the hub, one USB cable to my Canon MP640 Printer/Scanner*
From the hub, one USB cable to a 300 mb LaCie external Hard Drive
Ethernet cable #3 plugged into the ethernet port of my Canon MP630 Printer/Scanner *(Needed because when one attaches a printer/scanner to the Airport Extreme via USB it can only print, not scan, so I configured the scanner portion of the MP640 to run via ethernet…)
WIRELESS:  I used Airport Utility to CREATE A WIRELESS NETWORK (not "extend a wireless network")  and so I now have these 2 additional wireless network choices for my Macs or iPad:  Steve Airport WiFi     and also via the Airport Extreme:   Steve Airport WiFi 5GHz
What I would prefer is to have ONE wireless choice instead of 3.  So I am guessing that I could re-setup the Airport Extreme by choosing "Extend a wireless network" (instead of what I did "create a wireless network") so that the SteveBelWiFi is then simply the ONLY wireless choice.  BUT how will this work?  The B-box is still emitting a signal on level B -- correct?  If I "extend" the wireless, I see that I get to choose an existing wireless so I would choose SteveBelWiFi
WELL NOW I'VE GONE AND MESSED-UP EVERYTHING!!!!!!   Before submitting this questions I decided to try to change to "extend a wireless connection" and I chose the      only to get a warning message that this couldn't be done and then a yellow triangle with an "!" inside next to my Airport Extreme.  I did a "factory reset" like this:
To perform a factory default reset on the AirPort Extreme:
First remove power from the Extreme.
Using a paperclip or similar object, depress the reset button, and while still depressed plug the Extreme into power.
Keep the reset button depressed until the status light on the Extreme starts flashing rapidly, and then, release the reset button.
BUT NOTHING-- Airport Utility DOES NOT FIND my Airport Extreme - the only way I can now connect to the internet is to plug-in my B-Box ethernet cable directly to my MacBook Pro.  Everything else-- gone.
WHY WON'T Airport Utility re-find my Airport Extreme when I do the reset?  I let it glow with the amber button for over 10 minutes, - NOTHING.
Really lost, depressed and fully not understanding this now…
Truly need serious HELP here--  I'm almost shut-down…
    Thanks anyone,
    Best regards,
    Steve Schulte
    Thursday 10 January 2013

I left-out one thing:  Prior to the factory when I was trying to choose "Extend a wireless Network"  I of course chose SteveBelWiFi

  • Can't print to a Canon MF 4690 wirelessly through Airport Extreme

I cannot seem to figure out why this isn't working. I just replaced a Brother printer (7 years old) that worked great wirelessly through my Airport Extreme with a Canon imageCLASS MF 4690. I found, downloaded and installed the drivers for it (10.6), but when I set up the printer, I can only print using a generic PCL driver. When I choose the Canon UFR driver, I get an error every time, when printing wirelessly or when directly connected via USB. I can see the Canon in the Airport Utility, but it won't print.
    What can I do?

Welcome to the discussions, Joe P.!
    +What can I do?+
You might try Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide to see it that provides some help.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible with the USB port on the AirPorts, so that may possibly be the case here if the troubleshooting steps don't provide a solution. Apple does not furnish a list of compatible printers, so unfortunately it's a process of experimentation to see your device will work with the AirPort Extreme.
