Airport Extreme Network (Wired) Dropoffs

Hi everyone,
I've been suffering with a problem with my Airport Express for as long as I've owned it and finally decided I would make a major step to resolving the problem (primarily held back by not wanting to purchase another router to prove the problem).
I run a home Wireless network consisting of 2 x G4 PB 1.33 12" with Airport Extreme built in and 1 x Mac Mini with Airport Extreme built in. All devices connect to the Internet via this Airport Extreme which I have configured in NATing mode running DHCP. The Airport Extreme connects to the Internet (3Mbit/s Cable) via my Motorola Surfboard SB4100 Cablemodem using the Ethernet port. In between the cablemodem and the Airport Express is a 5 port 10/100 Switch, that enables me to connect my PS2/Xbox/GCN to the Internet (I have 2 Internet IPs, one for Gaming and one for Airport).
I have the Airport configured so that when there is activity the light flashes.
The problem I was getting was that occassionally (sometimes every 30 mins, sometimes more, sometimes less frequently but always frequently enough that I would be interrupted while doing things online) the connectivity to the Internet would pause. The pause was typically 10 seconds, sometimes less but never more than 20 seconds. While the Internet paused the light on the Airport would go orange and flash, as though it'd lost its IP address or something. Performing a hard reset on the device would not affect the reliability of the Airport and this connection and also up and downgrading the firmware from 6.1.0 to 6.1.1 to 6.2 does not affect the reliability either.
When I check the log of my surfboard occassionally I see sync'ing errors and put the problem down to this, however there were certainly less errors reported in the SB4100 log than there were downages.
I put the problem down to an IP renewal problem (where the Airport was renewing the DHCP lease) and kinda tried to tolerate the outages even though they are really annoying.
I had the opportunity to get my hands on a Cisco PIX 501 cheap the other day and took advantage in an effort to perhaps irradicate this problem or just perform some testing and my results are even more bizarre.
Now I have configured the PIX 501 to perform all the NAT/PAT functions that the Airport used to perform along with DHCP, etc.. The Airport has been configured purely as an Access Point, only bridging between wired and wireless.
The problem is still occurring in the new configuration!!
What I have found, though, from the indicator lights on Cisco PIX (indicating link speed and activity on the 4 ports of the integrated 10/100 switch) is that when the Airport goes "funny" the link light for the port that the Airport connects to goes out until the Airport goes back to green on its LED.
To me this looks like there could be an intermitted fault with the Ethernet interface on my Airport Express or a dodgey Ethernet cable. So I replace the Ethernet cable with a brand new 2m CAT5e cable to test this, and as expected the problem is still present. Next just to confirm absolutely 100% I move the Airport to a different port on the PIX and plug my PB directly into the old port (Disabling Airport) and test connectivity. I do not get a dropped link on that port and when the Airport is dropped I can still connect through the Cisco using my wired connection.
When I spoke to Apple they said that I should switch firmware versions to 6.1.1, then 6.1.0 and then back to 6.2 which has not helped either.
As a little quirky puzzler I can also force the problem to manifest itself by using Remote Desktop Protocol to connect to either a Windows Terminal Server or XP machine through the Airport. When I do this the problem will appear within minutes and recur every couple of minutes but not with any real regularity. Unfortunately for me this is something that I do very frequently
Before I try and take this unit back to Apple has anyone else seen this kind of problem and possibl

My apologies, perhaps it's not clear. The Cisco PIX is a router/firewall device. This is exactly what I have done and the problem is clearly nothing to do with anything except the Airport as my investigations and testing have proved.

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards

  • How do I extend my existent airport extreme network by addition of a 2nd airport extreme?

How do I extend my existent Airport Extreme network by addition of a 2nd Airport Extreme?

Can you clarify which version of the AirPort Extreme that you have now along with the model that you plan to use as the second device?
The older "round" AirPort Exteme or the newer "square" version with rounded corners?
Are you planning to extend using wireless only.....or by connecting the AirPort Extremes using a wired Ethernet connection?

Run Airport Utility, Manual Setup, Advanced button, Logs and statistics, Wireless Clients.

recently slowed to a crawl...after changing the

someone have been leeching on the network?
Sure, if you made a more secure password, that is quite possible. Minimum recommendation is the following:
    1. use WPA
    2. use a password with no word from ANY dictionary
    3. use a password that is a combination of letters (upper and lowercase), numbers and special characters
    4. use a password at least 12 characters long.
Better yet, use a "strong" password generator, such as the one at:

  • 17" flat panel Mac can no longer get on my Airport Extreme network

My 17" G4 flat panel iMac can't get on my Airport Extreme network. It has been on the network for years. All of a sudden I can't get on my own network. The Airport extreme uses a WAP2 Security password. Everything else in my home is on this network ie. Blu-Ray players, Wii, Nintendo DS's, MacBook, Apple TV. The G4 doesn't even have WAP2 as an option! Where did the option go? I really don't wanna set up the network again with a WEP password(That's an option on the G4) and have to reset everything. What happened?

There were two 17" flat-panel G4 iMacs. The earlier of the two (Part# M8812LL/A) had an optional AirPort Card. This card only supports 802.11b and either the WEP or WPA security standards. It does not WPA2. This may be the reason the G4 is not able to connect to your wireless network if you have it configured for WPA2 Personal.
You will need to reconfigure the AirPort to use the "WPA/WPA2 Personal" option.

  • How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?

How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?  My company is using an Airport Extreme in our office now and I want to prevent other employees from messing with the network/settings.  Is there a way to place a password on the settings to allow only the admin to access the network name and password?

Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • Will Airport Extreme Network with Panasonic Viera TC-P50ST30

Will Airport Extreme Network work properly with Panasonic Viera TC-P50ST30 HDTV?

I don't have this particular model, but I do have a Panasonic TC-P42GT25 plasma which has no difficulties accessing the Internet through my 4th Gen AirPort Extreme Base Station or 4th Gen Time Capsule.

  • I can see my airport extreme network, but none of my devices (vista, ipad, iphone, ipod) can connect to it. Why?

I have set up my apple aiport extreme after moving and I can see the airport extreme light is green and I can see the airport extreme network name, but when I select the network, the device cannot connect to it. No error message appears, the device simply is in a constant state of trying to connect to the network.
I can easily connect to the non Airport Extreme network.
    Can anyone help?

Try factory resetting, it often helps when changing location.

  • I changed my Airport Extreme network name and password, now I can't access my Airport Express speakers.  Help please.

I changed the network name and password associated with my Airport Extreme and now my system is not recognizing my Airport Express speakers.
Can someone help me get my speakers and sound system back online?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You will need to think in reverse here.
Change the network name and password back to where it was on the AirPort Extreme and get things working that way.
Then, change the name and password on one AirPort Express, then the second. Both Expresses will be blinking amber at this time. Power them off.
Now, change the name and password on the AirPort Extreme.
Power up both Expresses and they will now join the AirPort Extreme network correctly since you have programmed them with the new network name and password.

  • IPhone 5 unable to join airport extreme network, help!!!

I just bought an airpot extreme a week ago. After I configured it, my macbook pro can connect the wi-fi flawlessly. However, my iphone 5 was unable to join the airport extreme network. It sees the network, just can't join it. It doesn't say unable to join, I choose my network on my iphone, it shows it is trying to join, and never successfully joined. I've been trying miliion's way to fix this problem. I reset my iphone completely, reset my airport extreme, and reset the model, still never worked. Any idea?

Was one of the million ways that you tried.....changing the name of the wireless network on the AirPort Extreme and also changing the wireless network password?
    If not.....
Keep the wireless network name simple
Use only letters and numbers.....no special characters (like an apostrophe or asterisk, etc)
Limit of 20 characters or less in the name....8-10 would be ideal.
    No blank spaces
Same rules for the wireless network password
If that does not work, I can only conclude that the operating system on the iPhone has become corrupted....and this is an iPhone problem....not an AirPort Extreme problem.
Best to post in the iPhone support area to let the experts over there have a crack at things....but in general you will need to reset the iPhone back to its original default settings, then restore it again from your backup. If that does not work, the iPhone needs to be replaced.

  • When I reopen my computer (macbook pro) it connects to my dsl connection and not to my airport extreme network that I created

I purchased yesterday an airport extreme, everything works fine, but the thing is that when I close my laptop (just shutting down the screen) and then reopen it, instead of conecting to the airport extreme network I created, it connects to my DSL connection. Is this normal? Do I have to keep entering my own airport extreme network after I close/shut down my computer? Thank you very much

Hi Bob, I solved it, it had to do with the preferred networks. But thanks anyways!

  • Emac G4 problems with joining Airport Extreme network

I have an Airport Extreme network with two Airport Express base stations. The Airport Extreme is connected to the internet via ethernet/cable modem. The imac and the base stations work fine and I have no problem with my internet access on the imac, but I can't get internet access via the emac. It appears that the emac is connected to the network, but I get an error message ("Can't find server") when I try to access the internet. What have I done wrong?
imac G5 isight   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Other computer: emac G4, operating system 10.3.9

Is the eMac connected wirelessly to the network?
It may be a DNS issue, see KB 106798, Mac OS: Troubleshooting "A connection failure has occurred", "The specified server could not be found" or Similar Messages.

  • Automatically connecting a WEP encrypted Airport Extreme network

My Powerbook when it turns on has no trouble connecting to my WEP encrypted Airport Extreme network. My iMac G5 on the other hand requires a manual connection to the network. This even though my Apple menu -> System preferences -> network -> configure -> Airport has "by default join a specific network" with username and password selected.
Why does the Powerbook automatically connect when the iMac does not? Both are sitting side by side?

Well a variant of that article did work. I called AppleCare. They had me while I was still not connected, create a new location, Configure my airport settings, and lo and behold, preferred networks was there, I was able to edit my password for my WEP connection, hit Apply Now, restart, and Change All keychain passwords, and my network automatically connected on the next login.
    Thank you.

  • Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme network

Puzzled at set up of my new Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme network. Just trying to increase range. [Extreme works fine.]

We are going to need a bit more info in order to help.
Do you know if your AirPort Extreme is a newer dual band model?  Check the Model Number on the bottom of the device if you are not sure.
Are you still using the OS X 10.6.8 operating system on your Mac as your profile indicates?
If no, what operating system are you now using?
