Airport Extreme no longer recognizes or provides internet to wired devices

Not sure if it was the power outage or an update that is the problem; but, I had a 5th generation Airport Extreme as the center of my home network with a solid connection to the internet for both my wired and wireless components.  A few days ago, after a power flicker (all components on surge protectors) my wireless internet would not stay connected more than 45 seconds before dropping and oddly, none of my wired components we showing up on the network or getting an internet signal from the AEBS.  After two hours with my ISP technical support personnel we deduced that the problem was the AEBS and the modem was fine.  I bought a new AEBS yesterday (the new long cube one) to use until my appointment to have the 5th gen looked at.  Plugged that in and instantly my wireless network came back up - rock solid.  However, anything I connect directly to the AEBS via ethernet does not get an internet connection or show up in the network.  I searched for two days in these forums for a similar problem - but, have gotten nowhere.  I used my wired connections for internet phone service and really need to get this fixed soonest.  Much thanks for any help anyone can throw my way.

I would find it odd that you would have a replacement AirPort and still not have Ethernet connectivity ... but, of course, anything is possible. The DHCP service on the AirPort provides IP addresses to both wired and wireless clients by default so it shouldn't work for either if there was something amiss with it.
At this point, I would suggest that you try the following:
Perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort. After it resets it will default to its "out-of-the-box" configuration which is a wireless Internet router that will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN.
Without making any changes to the AirPort, try connecting any of your wired devices to it. If it still does not get the proper IP address and network connectivity I would suggest that you try performing a complete power recycle of your networking hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes my Express when I try to password protect the network

When I try to protect my network with a password, my airport extreme no longer recognizes my airport express.  How can I fix this so I can connect my network and still use my network for airtunes??

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?
Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes external HDD

My Airport Extreme has suddenly stopped recognizing the external HDD I have attached to it. This happened about 2 weeks ago, and has been driving me absolutely insane since (I use this HDD to store all my music, and as such have not been able to listen while I work during this time). I've looked around and tried all the suggestions from other topics, but nothing is working.
    • Airport Extreme is using Firmware 7.3.2 -- I did not want to update to 7.5.x, since I saw overall bad opinion about the latest firmware
    • My MacBook Pro is using 10.6.7 -- I have all the latest updates from Software Update
    • External HDD is a Western Digital 500 GB formatted in Mac OS Extended connect to the Airport Extreme via USB -- reformatting this HDD is not an option at this time
The Airport Extreme has had no trouble with the wireless connection, everything seems to be working for all computers on the network. I am able to successfully configure it using the Airport Utility. The moment I plug my external HDD into the Airport Extreme, I can no longer use the Airport Utility to configure. I receive this error message:
Make sure your AirPort wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)
If I unplug my external HDD, the error message goes away and I am able to configure the Extreme again. In addition to the error message above, the external HDD does not show up in Network nor on the left side panel when opening a new Finder Window.
    I have tried the following:
    • I restored the Extreme to factory settings and then reconfigured it using my backup copy of the configuration file. The error persists.
    • I have used Disk Utility to repair the external HDD and received no errors.
    • I have plugged my laptop into the Extreme via Ethernet rather than a wireless connection. The error persists.
    • I have used a different laptop (via wireless and Ethernet)-- a MacBook also running 10.6.7. It also cannot configure the Extreme nor see the external HDD when it is connnected to the Extreme.
I'm at wits end here, and I have no idea what else I can do. This problem happened suddenly and with no explanation, and no Snow Leopard updates have fixed it.
Do you all have any other suggestions?

I just tried switching the HDD to another USB port on the hub, and am still having the same issue.
    Hi,
Bob exaggerated a bit (or more); I'm not really a HD guru.    I do help folks with Time Machine problems, and sometimes those are HD problems.
It is quite unusual.  I'd suspect the hub, cable, or connections.
Try using the same port that your printer is working fine on (leave the printer disconnected).
Try disconnecting the hub and connecting the HD directly to the USB port. It may not recognize it if there isn't enough power, but see if the Airport goes berserk.
Try a different cable, or just swap ends.  A plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact (or may short out) in another.

  • My airport extreme no longer recognizes hard drives attached to it. I'm running Mac OS Lion on a Macbook Pro. Any ideas?

I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme. I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to Lion and then went on vacation. I checked all my hard drives when I returned and my Airport extreme is no longer recognizing my hard drives. I have two WD mac-formatted HDs connected to the airport extreme via an AC/DC powered 4 port USB hub. Both hard drives work fine when they are connected to my computer and light up when connected to the USB hub connected to the Airport extreme. I've reset the airport to factory settings and tried reconfiguring it, but that didn't work. I'm hoping I can get some help from you guys. Thanks!

I suggest you post this issue on the iTunes forum.  You will have an audience that is oriented specifically towards this application.
    Ciao.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes Ethernet port.

I have a fairly new Airport extreme, which up until a week ago was working great. For a week now it has, though the cable company and ISP have run checks on their equipment and given a clean bill of health, it will not see the cable modem or isp address. Cable works fine when ethernet cable is disconnected from airport and run direct into a computer, but nothing I can do seems to make it think that there is ethernet running to it. Any ideas what may be the cause of this? No equipment changes have been made and everything has been reset and troubleshot pretty extensively.
Thanks for any insight you might have.
    b

If anyone has ideas here is a little further info.
RCA DCM425 Digital Cable Modem from Time Warner Cable. I borrowed an Airport Express version 6.3 from my office to troubleshoot with last night and was unable to get it working either. Bridge mode or DHCP neither works on either unit. Everytime I change a setting on the Extreme or Express, or check network settings it resets the cable modem. Do I need a Turnaround Ethernet cable? Should I be using a router? It does not seem to help to set as bridge and plug ethernet into LAN port instead of WAN, so not sure if a router would get past the problem.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes MobileMe after iCloud

After updating my MobileMe to iCloud this weekend I noticed my Airport Extreme was blinking orange. It returned an error that said my MobileMe password was incorrect. I have 'Back to My Mac' enabled under iCloud but apparently it's not compatible with the current Airport software.
One thing I don't know is whether Back to My Mac will work under iCloud without the Apple ID being input into the Airport; I don't have another computer running Lion/iCloud at another location so I can't test it out. Does anyone else know if it still works correctly?

If you are referring to Back to My Mac as it pertains to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), then no, this feature is not supported if you migrated your MobileMe account to iCloud.

  • Airport Extreme-have wifi connection but no internet on some devices???

I just replaced my linksys router with the latest (tower) Airport Extreme and an Airport Express as an extention of the network.  Now I had a heak of a tme setting this up to mimic what the linksys did so I would have a smooth transition.  I have a windows server 2008 R2 server which is my file server, DHCP & DNS server.  I set my Extreme with the "DHCP & NAT" set the range I use which is 10.0.0.10 - .253, Set the router's address to 10.0.0.10 in network properties as well as setting the default host to point back to my server at 10.0.0.100.  I also checked "Enable NAT port mapping protocol".  Everthing seems to be working great most of the time...my wired PC's have internet and their proper IP addresses, my iMac and MacBook Pro have internet and proper IP addresses, iPad, iPhones...BUT I am noticing on my iPhone 5 that I'll show a full wifi signal but no IP address there for no internet.  Now this happened a couple times and the only way I got it back was to do a rest of the phone.  I have never had any wifi issues with this prior to installing the Extreme and Express.  So I thought it was just the iPhone but my iPad just behaved the same way and a rest took care of it.  Worse at the same time I checked my MacBook and I have the exlimation point over the wifi in the top tool bar.  I can see and pick my SSID but couldn't get an IP address until I clicked the Airport Utility then it connected.
So basically I am looking for any suggestions or better yet fixes on my issues.  I'm not sure if I have the Airport Extreme configured properly for it to work with the Windows 2008 Server.
I appreciate any help at all!
    Thank you greatly in advance,
    Dave

And when is apple going to put a NAT only mode on the Extreme????
Apple have a policy of not telling.. you can ask .. but they don't tell.
I am a rather recent arrival on the Mac/Apple seen so I would also wonder how an OSX server is setup with AE..
For wireless in particular, you can use Enterprise level security.. and that might fix it... because instead of using a preset key, as standard in wireless you can use a username and password combo from a radius server.. which might then be used to pass IP via dhcp. Something to consider if you don't mind getting a bit more complex..
Look at this thread which is looking at using ox x server which is basically the same issue you are having.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2756247?start=0&tstart=0
The idea of using a static range of IP addresses.. that might work.. with DHCP actually turned off.. I have used this setup for something completely different.. ie to pass different DNS to clients that need access to Netflix from overseas.. I did not explore it from a your no dhcp setup.. but that is another option to try.. there is so little info supplied it is hard to know and you just have to trial and error with it.

  • Airport Extreme 1st generation not connecting to internet via PPPoE.

The Extreme is replacing an existing Airport Express which successfully connects to the internet. I reset the Airport Extreme to the factory settings and started from there. The internet provider requires it be setup using PPPoE. I've tried several times to set up a new wireless network but the Airport Extreme isn't connecting to the internet, can't find DNS servers. I contacted the internet provider and confirmed that all settings/usernames/passwords are correct. I cycled the power on the DSL modem, unplugging it for several minutes a few times. Finally I took the whole setup to the local Genius Bar. Since they couldn't setup a PPPoE network there, the Apple Tech set up the Extreme using DHCP so we know it works. He suggested that I try replacing the wireless network instead of setting up a new network. I came home and tried that to the same results: no DNS servers and PPPoe not connecting to the internet. Everything in the Extreme is exactly the same as the Express except the Express works and the Extreme doesn't. What am I missing?
    Some background:
I purchased and used the Extreme in the US. Now trying to connect it to my MacBook in Canada. I did change the setting in the Extreme to "Canada"
I just the computer to 10.6.8. I ran the Disk Utility to repair the disk permissions several times.

If you temporarily connect the modem directly to your MacBook and set up a PPPoE connection on your Mac as a test......can it connect to the Internet that way?

  • Airport Extreme won't recognize external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've searched and search and tried everything, but my airport extreme refuses to recognize my external harddrive. I'm wanting to set it up so my time machine so it will back up automatically - basically a poor student's version of a time capsule. Please - I'm getting desperate - nothing I've found on-line has helped. Thanks!!!

I have just completed hooking up my airport extreme to my seagate external drive. I have the newer version mb763lla airport. After hooking everything up, I created a homebase network, and Initially my two windows computers would not recognize the drive, in my computer. I plugged a usb jump drive in to the router to check if the router required drives to be formatted fat32 and the jump drive worked, jump drives are formatted to fat32, so I knew my problem was the format of external drive. Then I knew I needed to format my drive to fat32, so I looked around the internet trying to find the best way to do so. What I discovered is that if you go to the website of your external drive, they generally have software to help you format your drive. Seagate has discwizard, and I noticed Western Digital has some too. I choose to format my drive with two partitions one fat32 and one ntfs. I was under the impression from some of the websites I visited that I would have problems with vista & fat32, so I used a windows xp computer to run the format software from seagate. I plugged the usb external 320gb freeagent seagate hard drive directly into the xp computer, to format it. After running the software I restarted my computer, and the drive worked, and I could now find the drive on both my xp and my vista computers. It did assign different drives, on the xp the drive is called y: on the vista the drive is called z: . Both computers can write or read to the fat32 partition of the drive.

  • Is it possible to set up a network with airport extreme that is not on the internet

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?  Not connected to the internet wifi.

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?
    Yes
Not connected to the internet wifi.
If the AirPort Exteme is not connected to the Internet, then Internet connections will not be available on wireless or wired connections.

  • √using successfully airport express for internet/ when hooking up new airport extreme light glows green, but does NOT appear in devices seen????airport wifi devices

using sucessfully airport express for internet
when hooking up new airport extreme light glows green, but does NOT appear in devices sesn in 5.6 airport wifi devices
wanting to use extreme at base and express in another part of the house

How is the express getting internet? What modem is it plugged into?
How is the extreme setup? New extreme cannot be setup with 5.6 utility.. you must use latest 6.3. Which also means you cannot setup from computer using less than Lion .. or you must use iOS with latest utility but it has limited configuration cf the computer version.
IPv6 is also needed.. turn on local link.

  • AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) WiFi access point disappears but wired ethernet is ok

My AirPort Extreme SSID and access point "disappear" randomly from available WiFi networks. I had a 1st gen AirPort Extreme and never had this problem until earlier this year. I thought it might be a failing radio in the 1st gen unit so I used it as a good excuse to get a 5th gen AirPort extreme about 3 months ago. Same problem has been occuring; unfortunately it is random and I cannot get a handle on what/when/why it is happening.
For example, my iPhone 4S was connected to the network at about 1700 today and when I next checked the phone around 2115, no wifi connection and my network was not listed in the WiFi connections. The base station is away from other wireless devices (mouse, keyboard) and is about 10 feet from the nearest PC and monitor. Both printers are accessed via ethernet, not wifi. The strange and puzzling thing is that the PC, which is connected by ethernet to the AirPort Extreme, is still connected to the internet (I can browse, check email, newsgroups, etc.).
When I run the AirPort Utility, the base station is identified (AirPort Extreme 802.11n 5th Generation), there is an appropriate IP address, Version 7.6 firmware, and MAC address is listed. However, when I attempt to Continue or do a Manual Setup, I'm prompted for the admin password, the progress bar moves during 'reading from the Apple wireless device. Please wait...,' and then the utility reports "An error occured while tryong to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6722.
If I unplug, wait, and reattach the power to the base station, WiFi becomes available again. When the WiFi connection "disappears", the LED light is solid green.
Any insights are appreciated; please let me know other helpful information I can provide.
    Scott

I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts.
I bought an airport extreme n last week and plugged it in, hooked it up to my adsl router by Ethernet, configured it to set up a new wifi network and got the green light. I use an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Windows 7 PC with an N wifi adaptor.
The airport works fine for about 2 hours before the wireless network disappears without a trace. Green light remains on the base station and I can connect fine by Ethernet.
    "it just don't make sense"
    I hope it's not a windows-7-only thing, Apple.
PS. Updated firmware to the newest version, no difference.
Airport is near to a wireless phone so I set a specific wireless channel and frequency to prevent a clash. No change.

  • Airport Extreme no longer connects to internet ****

I really hope somebody can help me. I've searched the forum and believe I've tried everything suggested to others having similar issues.
I've never had any issues with my Airport before this past week when suddenly my broadband connection went dead (Charter Cable). I was able to get a signal to the modem as it appeared the cable was disconnected outside so I reattached. I've talked to the tech support people who were able to "see" that my modem was online but wireless was not working.
I have reset the Airport Extreme, I have reset the cable modem (Scientific Atlanta), I have unplugged both for up to 2hrs, I have deleted and reinstalled the airport software, I have tried starting a new location in network preferences. The green light glows green on the Airport but I still get errors ranging from 'you appear to not have a valid internet connection to perhaps you typed the url incorrectly'. I have even tried setting up a brand new Airport up with the same result. I have tried using other wifi devices to connect, select my network, I get full wifi connection (bars) but still nothing.
If I plug directly via ethernet cable from modem to macbook I have no problems.
I spent 2 hours on the phone with apple yesterday and they were not able to figure it out. We were able to see a valid looking IP address, select my network, etc and nothing. My internet provider is adamant that this is not their problem. I've also tried two different cable modems from the cable company. For five years I've had no issues and for some inexplicable reason getting wireless to work is like trying to land on the moon now.
    Any ideas?

    Hi everyone,
I called Apple today and found the solution to my problem. The cable modem was not sending the correct IP address to the Airport. You can tell by opening the Airport Admin program, selecting internet from the tabbed menu and looking at the IP address. If it ends in ".169" that is bad. So, close the Airport Admin program, turn off the cable modem, wait 20-30 seconds, turn it on again and wait for it to power up. After another 30 seconds, open the Airport Admin and select the internet tab. The IP address should be different and..... now it works! The person helping me at Apple says he has to do this about once a month for some reason.
    Hope this helps others, ellen

  • Airport utility no longer recognizes my Airport Extreme Base Station, which had been set up to extend a wifi network

Hi.  In November I set up my airport extreme base station (5th generation I believe) to wirelessly extend the wifi network we use at home to see if it would increase download speeds.  Before doing that, I did a factory reset of my airport extreme, and the owner of the airport extreme to which the ethernet cable is attached made changes to his network to allow it to be extended.  I folllowed all the directions from the apple support pages, and finally got it to work.  I could even access a portable hard drive which I attached to the airport extreme base station being used as the extension.  Then a week or so ago I noticed that my laptop would no longer connect to my base station.  I did not have time to look into it until this week.  Airport utility, either on my Mac or iphone no longer recognizes my base station.  My mac is running OS X 10.10.1  and my iPhone is running iOS 8.1.2  I have tried both hard, soft and factory resets of my base station to no avail.  The only thing that has changed after doing that, is that when I do a soft reset of my base station, a neighbors airport express appears when it never did before.  I can't actually connect to it, but it does try.  Then after approximately 5 minutes, it disappears from my list.
Today I went and pulled out my OLD AIRPORT EXTREME base station... you know, the one that looks like a space ship and is running wifi 802.1 b/c?  airport utility DOES locate and display that, but airport utility returns a message stating that it cannot be set up by this software.  I am attaching an image of that.
    Thank you,
    John
