AirPort Extreme no longer works

Hi Folks,
I previously posted that my Extreme had issues finding the PPPoE server after unplugging it (I had to connect it through my Linksys WRT54G.... well, I think the AirPort is now out of commission. This will be my second Airport Extreme in 2 weeks with problems. It seems that the internet port is out, as every-time I plug in a ethernet cable it says that the cable is disconnected. I have tried 5 different cables ( all work fine with the Linksys box- so it is not a dead cable) and several resets to factory settings. Any suggestions?

I'm not using an Airport.  The firewall on the network is running DD-WRT and no settings have changed since it was working with ML Server. I did test the problem with an Airport Express, though, and was able to reproduce it with that equipment as well.
My server does not have a public address.  VPN traffic is forwarded from the firewall.  I do see activity when the connection attempt begins, but it never succeeds.

Yep, that's all of it.  No real indication of failure even.

  • Two Airport Extremes no longer working in tandem to extend network

Trouble has cropped up with my home network, I think dating back to the installation of Leopard (though I'm not sure about that). I have been using two Airport Extreme (both 802.11n) to extend my wireless network throughout the house. For some reason, the two no longer seem to be communicating with each other. I have done factory resets on both, gone through the streamlined setup routine outlined in the Knowledge Base article on configuring Airport Extreme networks, and no dice. The remote station, once set up to extend the base network, no longer appears as a separate station in Airport Utility, and its indicator light is a steady amber. I seem to recall this was the case when it was working, too.
    Any thoughts?

Here is some more info. I had a look at the posts on this issue from Nov. 19th, where Jane describes setting up the two base stations in a particular sequence using the assisted (not manual) setup process. My problem is that none of the relevant options ... allowing the network to be extended, designating the second base station as a remote station, etc ... come up in the assisted menus. I can only get to those options via the manual setup.
I would also note that I called Apple about this problem. After being informed, to my extreme frustration, that Apple does not support manually setup WDS configurations over the phone, the Apple rep told me (in a decidedly dismissive tone) that I should be using the assisted setup process. So Apple has confirmed that this is the way to go ... but Airport Utility doesn't seem to work that way.
    Help? Anyone?

  • Airport Extreme no longer working with DSL

I have a Westell B90 DSL modem connected via ethernet to my Airport Extreme (using DHCP) and the two have happily co-existed for four years. About two days ago, it stopped working. It seems the AE can't get an IP address from the modem. The modem still assigns an IP address and works when connected directly to my Macbook Pro (that's how I am connected now). I also have an Airport Express that I use for music and signal relay. I tried to use it as the base station - that also failed to get an IP address. Help!
    thanks

Thanks. I was suspicious of Verizon, but I spent an hour on the phone with them yesterday and they swore it was not their fault. Anyway...
The modem is not acting as a router as far as I know. It is a fairly simple box with just a power plug, phone line jack, usb jack (unused) and the ethernet that connects to the AE. The AE is currently set to distribute IP addresses using DHCP and NAT. We have four laptops in the family and I need them all to work. We live out in the country, so there is no need to be secure.
    Thanks again.

My airport utility no longer works, but I have just changed my router.  Is there something I need to do ?  The orange light shows up on my airport, rather than the green one it should have.  Please help !!!

**** little info about your equipment.
If you just replaced the router with an Airport Extreme or Express:
disconnect the modem from power, disconnect the new router from power, connect the modem to power and wait till it os fully started up, then connect the new router to power. After a while the amber light will turn to flashing, then after a while it will turn to green. Then with AirportUtility (in Aplications/Utilities) it should be configured with the password.

  • I just installed Airport Extreme. It works as a wireless network on my Macbook. It won't connect with my Windows Visa PC. Message reads: "settings saved on this computer for the network don't match requirements of the network.

I just installed Airport Extreme. It works as a wireless network on my Macbook. It won't connect with my Windows Visa PC. Message reads: "settings saved on this computer for the network don't match requirements of the network." I seem to need to enter a security key/passphrase to connect to the PC. Where do I find them?
    Thanks for your help.

I assume that you have Wireless Security enabled on your AirPort's wireless network. The issue maybe that the PC is unable to use the WPA password itself and will require using the Equivalent Network Password instead.
To get this password, you will use the AirPort Utility from the MacBook:
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort base station > Manual Setup
Now, before doing anything else, go up to the utility's menu bar at the top of the screen, and then, choose "Base Station," and then, Equivalent Network Password from the drop-down menu. You will see two items: 1) WPA Password, which should look familiar to you, and 2) WPA Pre-Shared Key. It should be a long hexidecimal set of numbers and letters. Jot down this second item.
You will want to use the value you just jotted down when entering the password from the Windows Visa PC.

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes my Express when I try to password protect the network

When I try to protect my network with a password, my airport extreme no longer recognizes my airport express.  How can I fix this so I can connect my network and still use my network for airtunes??

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?
Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

  • Will my airport extreme 2nd generation work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

Will my airport extreme 2nd Gen work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

    RRoger, everything is working fine.
So, what is the actual problem here?  You are now wondering if the Vonage can handle the speed from the modem? Is that the "problem" after all this discussion?
now I am wondering if my current setup will allow me to get docsis 3.0 speeds.
What speed is your Internet provider delivering to you?
The AirPort Express uses 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, so it will handle up to 100 Mbps. We have already told you that.
Vonage likely does the same. The answer is almost certainly "yes" .......both the Vonage and AirPort will handle the speed from the modem.
If you want to double check this, please provide the model number of the Vonage,  and we will try to look up the specifications for the device. If you have documentation there with specifications for the Vonage device, check to see if the Ethernet ports are listed as 10/100. This is standard with almost all devices, with some of them handling even higher speeds 10/100/1000.
Chances are, your network will handle a lot more speed than your service provider is supplying to you. So, the "choke" point on your network may very well be your service provider and modem......not the Vonage and AirPort.

  • My Airport Extreme just stopped working.  The message says ethernet cable not plugged in, but it is.  Cable modem works fine.  Is this a common problem?

My 2-year-old Airport Extreme instantly stopped working last night and is flashing the status light.  The problem description is that the ethernet cable is not plugged in... however, the ethernet cable is still plugged into the cable modem.  I checked the modem by plugging directly into my laptop... it works fine.  Is this a common problem?  Is there anything I can try other than sending it in for warranty repair?

At this point, before sending it back, I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Airport Extreme just stopped working

I have a airport extreme and and Airport Express. They have both been working on the same router for about a year or two. Now all of a sudden the Airport Extreme line doesnt work. I try to reconfigure and get the following message"Airport Utlity unable to find Airport wireless device after restarting." and goes on to say You may need to select your network from the WIFI menu and try again.  Don't understand what this means? I have tried reseting the extreme hard and soft still will not find the airport connection or even the ethernet connection. Can these Extremes burn out ? Thank you for the help

It's not the power adapter. If it were, you would have no power at all going to the AirPort Extreme and you indicate that the port lights are functioning.
Power down the AirPort Extreme for 5-10 minutes and then restart the device. If you still see the same symptoms, I'm afraid that there has been an internal electrical component failure in the AirPort Extreme and it will need to be serviced or replaced.

  • Airport extreme doesn't work anymore

My airport extreme router was working great, until coincidentally, when I purchased a new windows 8 laptop. Does this have something to do with windows 8?

I've been using my Airport Extreme since Dec 2012.  I bought a Windows 8 laptop and been using it with my airport extreme since early January with no issues.  My Extreme did stop working about a month ago after a firmware update was unsucessful.  I ended up resettting the Extreme and started from scratch again.  Everything seems to be working great once again.

  • New Airport Extreme and Older Airport Express No Longer Works

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme base station.   Now the Airport Express that I've had for a number of years no longer works, flashing amber.  It shows up under the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, but when I try to follow Apple's instructions for configuring it, I get this message:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I then turned to my IPad, which also detected the Airport Express under Wi-Fi Settings but returned a message when I tried to set it up that the Airport Express couldn't be set by this software and re-directed me to the support web site.
While we have an Apple TV unit, I used the Airport Express to stream music directly to our stereo from my MacBook and IPad and Phone and would love to be able to continue to do so.  Has anyone found a workaround for this problem, or will I be forced to buy a new Airport Express as well?
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Steve

I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I just tried this on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 and had no problems downloading and installing AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will not install on a Mac running Lion....only Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Can you check again to make sure that you are trying to install 5.6 and not 5.6.1?

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes or provides internet to wired devices

Not sure if it was the power outage or an update that is the problem; but, I had a 5th generation Airport Extreme as the center of my home network with a solid connection to the internet for both my wired and wireless components.  A few days ago, after a power flicker (all components on surge protectors) my wireless internet would not stay connected more than 45 seconds before dropping and oddly, none of my wired components we showing up on the network or getting an internet signal from the AEBS.  After two hours with my ISP technical support personnel we deduced that the problem was the AEBS and the modem was fine.  I bought a new AEBS yesterday (the new long cube one) to use until my appointment to have the 5th gen looked at.  Plugged that in and instantly my wireless network came back up - rock solid.  However, anything I connect directly to the AEBS via ethernet does not get an internet connection or show up in the network.  I searched for two days in these forums for a similar problem - but, have gotten nowhere.  I used my wired connections for internet phone service and really need to get this fixed soonest.  Much thanks for any help anyone can throw my way.

I would find it odd that you would have a replacement AirPort and still not have Ethernet connectivity ... but, of course, anything is possible. The DHCP service on the AirPort provides IP addresses to both wired and wireless clients by default so it shouldn't work for either if there was something amiss with it.
At this point, I would suggest that you try the following:
Perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort. After it resets it will default to its "out-of-the-box" configuration which is a wireless Internet router that will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN.
Without making any changes to the AirPort, try connecting any of your wired devices to it. If it still does not get the proper IP address and network connectivity I would suggest that you try performing a complete power recycle of your networking hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

  • My airport extreme no longer recognizes hard drives attached to it. I'm running Mac OS Lion on a Macbook Pro. Any ideas?

I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme. I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to Lion and then went on vacation. I checked all my hard drives when I returned and my Airport extreme is no longer recognizing my hard drives. I have two WD mac-formatted HDs connected to the airport extreme via an AC/DC powered 4 port USB hub. Both hard drives work fine when they are connected to my computer and light up when connected to the USB hub connected to the Airport extreme. I've reset the airport to factory settings and tried reconfiguring it, but that didn't work. I'm hoping I can get some help from you guys. Thanks!
    Brandon

I suggest you post this issue on the iTunes forum.  You will have an audience that is oriented specifically towards this application.
    Ciao.

  • Current model Airport Extreme no longer accepting DHCP WAN assignment

I woke up to my airport extreme not connecting to my ISP.
I'm using DHCP on the WAN side, and my Airport can no longer retrieve a DHCP address.  It appears the Airport does find the ISP's router address (the router address and subnet mask are populated), and my ISP sees the DHCP request.  However, my Airport will not accept the DHCP response and assign the address.  (My Internet connection is over a fiber line and I use a "portal" for access.  As such the ISP can see any and all packets for troubleshooting.)
I purchased my Airport new in November, 2011.
If I connect my Macbook Pro directly to the portal, I get a new address off the ISP.
My ISP then created a DHCP reservation.  Still no luck.  I then tried assigning a static address.  That works as well.
So it seems my router is not accepting the DCHP response or assigning the address.  My ISP uses DHCP3 on Linux.
    Any ideas?

So it seems my router is not accepting the DCHP response or assigning the address.  My ISP uses DHCP3 on Linux.
I'm not aware of any incompatibilities with version 3 of the DHCP service that would cause your AirPort not to accept an IP address from your ISP ... although anything is possible. Is this something that your ISP has just updated their DHCP services to or has this been their configuration for a while?
