Airport extreme not connecting to non-apple devices

Hi, I just installed a airporte extreme to serve as my home router (normal home network stuff).  My set-up is a cable modem to the extreme to an iMac.  The internet connection works, the wifi also works since I have a MacPro that works fine.  The issue is I can't get non-apple devices to read the wifi signal.  I have a sonos sound system and a Canon wifi printer that both worked fine with the old router (linksys), but with the extreme installed I can't get the signals to be recognized.  This seems like an airport set-up issue, any advice on what to look for and check?
My iMac is new and on Mountain Lion; my MacPro is a year old and on 10.7.4

I figured it out so perhaps I can help out the next person.  I am a novice to technical set-ups so this may second nature to some of you.  Basically, what I learned is that the wifi devices that I was trying to set-up all have a internal "memory" and still tries to communicate with previous routers that it was connected to.  Therefore, you have to get the devices to forget by powering them down for sufficient time, and take out batteries, so that it is more like a fresh set-up.  All is fine now.

  • Can't make Airport Extreme router work with non-Apple device

I am trying to help a friend who has a PC (Windows 7) that has a wired Ethernet connection to his girlfriend's Airport Extreme router.  He wants his Internet-capable Blu-Ray player and her IPad to wirelessly access the Internet via the Aiport Extreme router, with both the Blu-Ray player and the IPad's Internet access protected by WPA-2 encryption (both devices are capable of WPA-2).  How do I do this?
Here are the problems we've run into:
    1)  The Airport Utility for Windows (5.6.1) has been installed on the P.C., and we've used it to update the firmware on the Airport Extreme router.  However, after we followed the Aiport Utility instructions to set up the network, all the router wanted to do was look for an Apple device.  His girlfriend and her IPad are out-of-town right now, so the only device within range was the Blu-Ray player, and the router did not see it.  Not only that, but almost all the menu options on the Airport Utility were "greyed out" (unusable), except for "Configuration."  I am very troubled by the fact that the Airport Extreme router seems to want to look only for Apple devices.
    2)  In order to get Internet access for his Blu-Ray player for the time being, my friend pushed the "reset" button on the Airport Extreme router, and he can now use his Blu-Ray player for Netflix and other Internet streaming options.  However, the Blu-Ray's wireless Internet access is an unencrypted connection, and the Airport Extreme router is displaying a flashing amber light -- not a good situation.
    3) Although I know his girlfriend could access the router via her IPad when she returns, she is French-Canadian, and her IPad operates in French.  I happen to know some French, but I have enough trouble trying to understand  wireless networking terminology in English without having to try to figure out the equivalent terms in French.  Thankfully, the Airport Utility for Windows on his P.C. is in English, so that's what we've got to use to solve this problem.
I have profound respect for Apple products, but I'm a Windows/Linkysis router guy, so that's why I'm stumped.  Can anybody out there help me?

Which model of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) do they have? What is the version of firmware that you updated it to?
By default, the AEBS will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name (or SSID) of something like Apple Network NNNNNN. This would be similar to a Linksys when first powered-up.

  • Airport Extreme not connecting to AT&T DSL, not using a modem

It seems that all the fixes I read are about are bridging a modem but I do not have a modem.  I unplugged my Netgear Router and plugged in my Extreme and my Mac Book pro sees the Extreme but no internet.  Amber light will not turn green.

The Netgear device that you had was a modem/router. In other words, a modem and router.....two devices.....both combined into one package.
The AirPort Extreme is only a router. You will need a modem if you want to be able to access the Internet with the AirPort Extreme.
You will need to use the AirPort Extreme in conjunction with the Netgear device, or you could contact ATT and ask them to provide you with only a modem, if you no longer have the Netgear device, or do not want to use it.

  • Airport Extreme not connecting to network PM G5

Hi guys, I realise there are a lot of issues surrounding this but..
I've recently acquired a power mac G5, some specs:
    PowerMac G5
    Processor PPC 970 (2.2)
    Processor speed 1.6GHZ
    Bus Speed 800MHZ
    Running OS X 10.5.6
The system came without an airport card but luckily I had an airport extreme card that I bought some time ago but never used. I installed the card into the system but for some reason it just won't, no matter what I do, connect to my wireless network. I keep getting a 'timeout' message, it doesn't even give me the list of available networks.
Is there any solution to this problem and if not, what card will I need to buy to be able to get online?
    Thanks!

The as-shipped factory installed wireless card would have had an
adequate antenna; since the kit was more than just a card & CD.
The dealer-installed optional kit also is rather rare now, as a part.
+And, if the OS was installed when *no card* was physically present,+
+this too may add a wrinkle to using the wireless AirPort card, as it+
+may have been inactive due to not being present. Yet the correct+
+drivers should be installed by default by the full install of the OS.+
You may try one of those USB2.0 wireless dongle or module devices
as some of them have a wire lead between the computer's port and
the module itself, so the module can sit up on top of the Tower case.
A PowerMac G5 with aluminum case would tend to block more wi-fi
than the polycarbonate case of a PowerMac G4 tower. Not sure if
there's an easy fix for the missing original equipment PM G5 antenna.
I used to have some reference to the original part number including a
wireless card and antenna for PowerMac G5 models; since I didn't
need it personally, I have lost that information. That had been looked
up at sometime in the past to answer someone else's similar question.
    Hopefully something as simple as a USB wi-fi module may work out;
since the item could be set on top of the metal G5 tower's case. An
antenna from the plastic G4 tower may be insufficient for the signal
to be accessed, since the G5 had a different antenna to counter this.
    {A few PCI or card-based wi-fi modules have their own tiny antenna.}

  • Airport Extreme not connecting to Internet

    Here's my setup:
imac with Airport Extreme in home office
Airport Express hooked up to home ethernet network in family room to stream itunes (or connect laptop at other end of house)
Just got home and tried connecting my work powerbook to the Airport Extreme network, and suddenly it does not work. Basically times out after trying to connect to internet, even though i get full bars signal-wise, and network diagnostic says i should be connected. I can connect to the Airport Express network in the family room just fine. And my internet connection is working fine over the ethernet network.
Has my Airport Extreme bitten the dust? It's showing full bars, but my Canon i960 stopped printing from it the other day. I thought that was just a problem with the printer, but maybe the problem is my base station?
ps running all the lastest software...
Any suggestions? (Tried restarting cable modem, Airport Extreme, computer, etc. No go.
    Thanks for any help.

Hmmm... That's odd that you can't administer the Airport Base Station
from the portable computer (the one you'd later use wirelessly) and
essentially check the thing out thoroughly; see if the firmware and
other things are up to par and the settings are chosen properly.
You'd use the ethernet cable in either case, to access the Base from
the portable or the tower; when you are doing an occasional test and
reset of the Base station. Sometimes, details make a difference.
Another factor may be in how you have the Base station set up to
share internet among computers; the ethernet-only G4 that sees
the through-ported IP dataflow should also be able to administer
the base station. But it may require the Portable, hardwired, to
check the settings and get it to work. I had a similar issue once
with my primary AEBS and had been administering it via a non-
wi-fi B&W G3 tower on ethernet cable; the other computers were
all wi-fi. That worked out great. Currently, I alternately run the iMac
G4 via wireless, and sometimes by wire. I have both set up & ready
and only need to go into the control panel/system preferences; to
make a change. Sometimes the wireless telephone (2.4GHz) is too
close and kills the wireless to my desktop Mac; so I change to wire.
What kinds of addresses are you seeing in your set-up for IP
to each computer? Unless you do actual file-sharing between
them, you can set that up so each computer has a full ISP
address; not those 10.0... or 193.00. or other networking ones.
Sharing a printer is another matter, if you run your AEBS as
    though it were a wireless router only, it would be trial & error;
if set up to be wireless printing you'd probably need to get a
wireless USB module to see if that'd work for the G4.
The deal you are talking about, above, is how the device
works. Your G4 tower sees the internet via the through-port
in the AEBS router; it is a wired & wireless router, plus it
can give you wireless printing because it has a USB port.
But only when it is set up correctly. That is easier to do
    than it is to write about. When mine fails, I look into it;
and as I suggested in other posts, it will just work later.
PS: In your Portable computer's System Preferences/
Network control pane, see what order it shows the
items or pathways available to connect to the net are
in; if the wireless airport isn't at the top of the list &
is not activated, drag it there. The check-boxes by
each option of course, need to be activated as needed.
When you see a signal, it should be able to find the IP
if the other settings were correct. Sometimes, the basic
defaults work OK right out of the box.
In the portable's System Profiler, you could also see if
there is an assigned IP address given to the computer.
At that point, there should be no reason for it to not work.
Like I said, it is harder to write or talk about it; easier to
see the things and work the strings in the right order!

  • AirPort Extreme Not Connected to Internet

I have been trying all day to connect a new AirPort Extreme base station. The base station appears to be configured correctly, in that the green indicator light burns solid. But I can't connect to the Comcast Internet: I get an error message that the Ethernet cable is unplugged (it isn't). I've powered down, reset, and restarted the cable modem; and have disconnected and reconnected the power supply to the base station numerous times, but still no Internet. When I reattach the Ethernet cable directly to the Mac everything is fine. I can't tell whether or not the base station is pulling the IP address, etc., from Comcast. Anyway, I'm getting nowhere with this, and would greatly appreciate input from this discussion group. Thanks very much.

Hello driverdude. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Although I know you tried multiple resets, please try the following to see if this will get you Internet connectivity with your Comcast modem ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, or until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Airport Extreme "Not Connected" everytime I launch Mail or Safari

My wife uses a new iMac with wireless connection to Airport Extreme. Starting about a month ago, she now has to run a full diagnostic check and re-select her network options, password, etc to regain connection. Is there something we're missing to prevent this cumbersome step every time we try to get online? About a month ago, we had a power outage which may have been the root cause of the issue. Please help! Thanks!

  • Airport extreme will connect to some iPhones and iPads, but not all, and will not connect to MacBooks.

Why will the airport extreme not connect internet to macbook or some iPhones? It will connect to all our iPhone 6's and iPads but not to the MacBooks. The macbook says wi-fi has the self assigned ip address of ___,____,____,___ and will not be able to connect to the internet,

Have you done a full restart of the network in correct order?
Shut down everything.. OFF not standby.
    Power on in order.
    Modem.. wait 2min
    Router.. (Extreme??) wait 2min
Macbook.. Only the Macbook.. do restart anything else yet.
    Any luck??
No luck reset the Extreme to factory and redo the setup.. this time use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Bonus for names <10 characters.
Use passwords with the same rules.. only can be 8-20 characters.. mixed case and numbers.
    Try again with the Macbook..
No luck give explicit details of the setup of the whole network.

  • Cannot get my new AirPort Extreme to connect. Tried everything the manual suggests. Old router works fine.

AirPort Extreme will not connect--have tried everything manual suggests.

With what device will the AirPort Extreme not connect?
What is the make and model number of this device?
If this might be a cable modem, you do know that the modem needs to completely reset before it will communicate with the AirPort Extreme, correct?

  • Devices not connecting through Airport extreme wired connection

    Hi
I just got an Airport extreme to use as an extention of my existing network, and to plug some devices in so that they can connect to the internet for updates (Sony Blu-ray player, dish network receiver, slingbox)...
my wireless is from a linksys/cisco wireless router (4-port) wrt310n, that is connected to my cable modem. The airport is set and has the green light showing. The blu-ray player and dishnetwork receiver are plugged into two of the ports. The blu-ray player says it can't connect to the internet. The dish network receiver says it is connected, giving ip address/submask, etc.
If I take my macbook pro and turn off wireless and plug into the airport it will not connect to the internet.
What have I not done to allow wired connection to the airport extreme to connect to the net?
    thanks
    David

Thanks for the clarification of your setup.
Unfortunately, the bottom line here is that this is not going to work.
The ethernet ports on the Extreme will only be active if you configure the AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network". But, it can only "extend" a wireless network from another Apple router. It's not compatible for this purpose with your Cisco router or any other manufacturer's router.
If you are unable to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.
I should clarify that if you connect the Cisco and AirPort Extreme using ethernet, you would not use the "extend" setting on the AirPort Extreme. This is only used if the device is connecting to another Apple router.

  • HT203977 My new IPad Air 2 will not let me send text messages to non Apple devices.  What can I do to fix this problem?

I have a brand new IPad Air 2.  My operating system is 8.2.  I am not able to send iMessages (texts) to non Apple devices.  When I attempt to, the name is in red not green.  What can I do to fix this?

An iPad is not capable of natively sending an SMS or MMS messages.  Those services require a cellular voice channel connection, and a data tablet is only capable of a cellular data channel connection, not a voice channel connection.
If you have an iPhone, under the settings on the iPhone you can enable forwarding with your iPad - where the iPhone actually sends and receives the SMS texts and shares them with your iPad.
Otherwise, you will need to use an app and internet service like the telegram messaging app. Or you can send emails to the persons cell phone via their carriers texting gateway (e.g. [email protected] if they use AT&T in the USA).
iMessages between iOS apps are separate from SMS texts as iMessages use Apples internet service and equipment. But the SMS protocol crams a short text message into the residual bandwidth of a cellular phones voice channel and cannot be sent over a cellular data connection.

  • The one non-Apple device I want to hold on to is my Blackberry.  Apologies - put it down to age.  is it possible for me to sync Calendars?  [what IS an Ical?]  Contacts and Notes etc syncs easily - only Calendar problem. i do hv a Google calendar/account.

New to Mac (at 60+ years] and enjoying it.   But one non-Apple device want to hold on to is Blackberry 9900.   I can sync contacts, tasks - but NOT Calender.   I get message telling me to set up an iCal.    I have Google Calendar and happy to use that as 'hub' as it were, if that does job.  Syncing my Air and smartphone is important - help please?

Another weird thing related to above question....when I first plugged in the itouch, it asked if I wanted to update the software and I did.  Then it went into restore.  Then the itouch itself went to a grey screen and asked me questions such as did I want to back up to icloud, use find my itouch, etc. plus it wanted my Apple sign in.  I did all that.  Once the itouch came on, I noticed that my daughter's music and photos were gone.  So that was all good.  But then at some point later when I was trying to figure out how to sync, I noticed another notice from Apple on my computer asking if I wanted to update.  I assumed that was for my computer not the itouch this time.  I did that.  Then the itouch was back to the grey tones and the same sign in questions.  Now my daughter's photos are back on it but not her music.  When I click Sync, nothing happens as far as loading the music.  Could this be that my music library is too big for the memory?  Wouldn't it tell me that rather than just not do it?  As you can see, I am very confused.

  • Hi All. I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7 last night and now cannot access my home WIFI, all other non Apple devices are fine. I have reset, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', doesnt show the option. I have turned on and off

Hi All, I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7.1.1 on my IPAD last night , reluctant as every upgrade which promises fixes which dont impact me causes problems that do , which I fix via this community. Today I can no longer access my WIFI at home, my non Apple devices all work fine.I have tried all the online suggestions I can find for this, reset facgtory settings, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', I try to reconnect and it asks for my password which I know is correct and it says it cannot access my network. It can access an unsecured one I believe, but that is not ideal. Any fresh suggestions would be really welcome, please. Many thanks

Thanks so much for your reply, yes I did and that has not worked either . A friend has suggested re installing upgrade, so may try that .

  • How can I connect Bluetooth in iPad retina with non apple devices ?

How can I connect Bluetooth in iPad retina with non apple devices ?

    What devices?
The iPad can only pair with earphones, speakers and keyboards.
It cannot directly pair with other phones or computers for file transfer or other operations.
Most Bluetooth devices will have a user guide to connect them to other devices. follow that to start the process.
From the iPad side, its just a matter of going inot Settings->BlueTooth turning it on, and searching for the device to pair.
