Airport extreme not functioning extremely well!  Need advice on boosting it

I live in an adobe house. My Powerbook G4 alum 15" loses the airport extreme base station signal as soon as I am out of the same room with it and my PowerPC G4 in the next room cannot pick up the signal. My new little G5 macBook gets the best range-- up to 100 feet away! Do I need a WDS network -- if so, what is it and how do I start to build and piece one together?

  • I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?

I have an Airport Extreme and need to open ports in order to view my CCTV system remotely.  How am I able to do this?  The company that supports the system says I need to open the following - 8200, 8016, 8116, 10019, 12088.  All help is appreciated.

Open AirPort Utility on the PC, select the Airport Extreme and click Manual Setup
    Click the Advanced icon
    Click the Port Mapping tab
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the connection list to set things up
Reference pages 49-51 in the Apple AirPort Networks guide for more info
IF.....you do not see a Port Mapping tab when you click the Advanced icon, then that would mean that the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode and the main routing functions for the network are being provided by another device.
You will need to set up the port mapping on that device, which is likely your modem/router or gateway.

  • When updating to ios 7, my airport does not function in my ipad and iphone. No icon appears...I´ve check I´ve got last firmware on aiport utility, and also I´ve restart both devices... thanks for your support..

HI!, When updating to ios 7, my airport does not function in my ipad and iphone. No icon appears ...I´ve check I´ve got last firmware on aiport utility, and also I´ve restart both devices... buth still not working

Restart your AirPort Base Station or other router if that's what you have. Unplug it and allow a moment or two for it to reset before plugging it back in again.
If that does not work, try resetting your network settings: on the iPad and iPhone, tap Settings > Wi-Fi, select your network then "Forget this Network". Select the network again, provide its password, and verify you can connect.
If that does not work, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Select your network again as above.
If that does not work, "hard reset" your AirPort Base Station, assuming you are using one and not some third party product. You will need to reconfigure it using AirPort Utility.

I've MacBook Pro 2009 model... from last few days my airport is not functional. This happened when I deleted plist of com.apple..... from systems folder from library-> preference->system. Now, when you check the status of Airport hardware it says "Not Associated".  One more thing that came to my notice is that 'com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist' this file is missing from system folder. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thank you for your reply......
I have tried using different OS 10.7, 10.8... further OS doesn't suit my MacBook, so currently I am on 10.6. I did reinstallation twice using 10.6 but the files were not restored.
Yes.. I am talking about internet wireless card.
I don't have back up files for files which i deleted and they are not in trash as well.... the reason I deleted files was from the image attached from OSXdaily.com
I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, SMC but to no use.
    now what do I do.??

Enter key not functioning pls i need to resume back, enter key not function another option pls hp mini laptop.

    Hello Damyanology,
If your enter key is not working but you have to use it, you can bring up the on screen keyboard, and that will allow you to use enter.
Here is a link to open the on screen keyboard.
Go into device manager and uninstall the keyboard and restart the computer. This should reinstall the driver to correct the problem.
Here is a link to uninstall in device manager.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Just bought an AirPort Extreme, in need for some help/suggestions.

    Hello all.
Just purchased an AirPort Extreme today, very excited about it as my old router was getting worse and worse.
Just finished setting up the basics of the extreme right now, set up the network name, password, and all that.
I obviously know this is a DualBand router, and want to take advantage of it!
    I have two main questions...
    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
My list of devices in the household:
    - 2012 iMac
      - (2) 2008 Unibody MacBook's.
      - iPad
      - A few iPhones
      - Apple TV
      - PS3
Most of the time we have two of the Mac's running at the same time, as well as a few iPhones connected based on who's home or not.
For my Apple TV and PS3, I love to get the best performance possible... Therefore I usually have those running a wired connection to the router.
Any kind of help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I'm pretty computer friendly, just want to know the best ideas for the best performance!
    Thanks again.

    1.  How do I exactly set up the "two" different networks?
Do exactly nothing. By default, both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are already broadcasting a signal with the same wireless network name.
    2.  I wanted help/suggestions on what devices I should connect to what network to get the best performance out of it.
Do exactly nothing. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band based on their capabilities (an older iPhone cannot connect to 5 GHz, for example)...and...the relative distance between the wireless device and AirPort Extreme.
If you have newer devices that are capable of connecting using 5 GHz, they will connect at that frequency if they are in the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.  If you walk your laptop a few rooms away, it will probably connect to 2.4 GHz, since those signals are much stronger than 5 GHz signals.
The point is, you do not need to be concerned about this. Devices connect to the best signal quality automatically.

  • How do I add a repeater Airport Extreme? Need a little more range.

Just added the new Airport Extreme to my home/office network. Since my macbook pro is a dual core and not a dual core2, I am not able to use the new "n" wireless network. Not happy. So...I need more range to hit my office which is through 3 walls. How do I go about setting up a repeater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you...Thomas

Neptune is correct and your impression of N to
    dismay
you is not founded. My G side of my network is now
    4
to 5 times faster than before the N router and
    just
about as fast as the N side of my network. So
    there
are efficiencies to be gained from the N router.
I concur. Adding the 2 AE 802.11n allows all my
802.11g connected devices to use the maximum speed
provided by my DSL line, 1.5 Gbit. I tested this
using dslreports.com tools. I can get the maximum
speed provided by my DSL provider (Verizon) from
anywhere in my hour (on 3 different floors).
Also I can use my iTunes streaming server (off a
Infrant NAS) to go to maximum speed. And Apple TV
streaming is working from all my machines, Macs and
    PCs.
So there are MANY benefits to using multiple AEs with
    801.11g devices.
Thanks to all. Just installed another airport extreme....but have no idea how to add it to my current network. I want to make it a repeater to extend my network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Best
    Tom

  • Does AirPort Extreme Card Need Config?

In reading some of the discussions relative to enabling WPA security, I have only seen reference to configuring the base station such as AiportExpress. Having done that are there any changes which need to be made to the AirPort Extreme card? For some reason I thought both needed to be configured to use WPA securely. I now get the distinct impression that only the base station needs to have anything done to it.
Could someone please clarify this for me?
    -Bill
iBook G-4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.33 GHz, 768 MB memory, 60 GB HD, iPod Shuffle

    Hello bdahm,
Since the network is controlled by the base station the airport card only needs to know the correct the info to join the network.
Lets think of it like this. WEP and WPA are types of keys similar to a car. If you where to compare a standard Toyota key to a hight tech Mercedes Benz, you would realized that one is far superior than the other but it is not quite wide spread as the first. Like a car the network can take you places and as long as you have the correct key.
The base station is like the car and the airport card is like the key. The nice thing about the card is that it can transform into ether key as long as it provided with the correct code for the network.
So when setting up network the WPA key is setup and configured on the base station, and the card is told what style of key it should use.
I hope this clears some things up and does not confuse you more

  • Airport Extreme consistently needs restart

I'm using a 54mbps Airport Extreme in Bridge mode with a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Both antennas on the linksys router have broken off, so I have disabled the wireless portion of the router and just use it for wired connections. I previously was using an older "Snow" Airport in Bridge mode and had no problems.
Since updating to the faster Airport Extreme, I've found that the wireless network will disappear and the Airport becomes unresponsive, not showing up in Airport Utility. The power must be reset in order for the network and Airport to show up again in Airport Utility. After a restart, the router works fine for hours at a time. I've seen nothing suspicious in the logs, but at least once a day, it must be reset. This is using Airport firmware 5.7.
Has anyone seen or solved this problem before?

Got the same problem, which I hoped Apple would have fixed in 10.5.2.
I go through all the same steps above, and it always fails with
"AirPort Utility was unable to find your base station after restarting.
The settings for this base station have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the base station. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."

  • My Airport Extreme "disappeared"  Need help

I have a MacBook Pro which has a built in Airport Extreme. I never used it because I have an existing external one that I've been using and is hooked up to a phone line.
Today, I went to my Airport Utility and now the computer does not see its own built in Airport Express! Can someone tell me what happened? I'm afraid someone nearby saw it, is tapping off of it and encrypted it. Yes? No?
Anyway, how do I get it back?

If you are talking about your built in airport card, all you must do is Turn Airport ON. Go into the Network Preferences pane. There is a button to turn the Airport ON..(and a checkbox to put it in your menu bar so you can access it without going into preferences again..)

  • Add Airport extreme to Time Capsule to boost Wifi

We currently use Time Capsule for Wifi throughout our house with one exception. Our family room is on the other side of a brick wall. We have an old Airport extreme and was wondering if we could somehow add it to the network to boost the wifi into the family room. Thanks.

Hello williards. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is possible, but there are at least two things to consider before doing so:
    1) Mixing "n" and "g" AirPorts will only allow you to extend the wireless range in a static WDS. This means two things: The overall bandwidth (speed) will be cut in half, and the other is that this type of WDS can only operate in the 802.11g mode ... effectively, eliminating the advantage of "n."
    2) In order to extend the network wirelessly, the extending AirPort must have a sufficient signal from the AirPort it is extending. If wireless devices in the family room cannot get a good signal the old AirPort Extreme won't either and you will not be happy with the performance of the WDS.
    A few options would be:
    1) Connect the AirPorts via Ethernet.
    2) If Ethernet is not possible, consider employing Powerline adapters. These adapter take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a hybrid Ethernet circuit between adapters. Note: It is important that the two adapters are on the same electrical circuit.

  • My ipad camera is not functioning very well

    I can't take pictures!

    Hey ozzmat,
Though the following comes from an iPhone article, the troubleshooting steps would still be valid:
    Camera is not functioning
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tapping Settings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center. Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. After recording begins, you cannot readjust focus until you stop recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll. Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

If none of that seems to resolve the issue, I'd check out the iPad troubleshooting assistant and do steps 4 and 5:

    All the best,

  • My Airport Extreme always needs a reboot for it to see an external drive plugged into it. Is this normal?

The title pretty much sums it up. Every few days I have to reboot my AE in order for it to recognize the external drive (iOmega Prestige 500gb) I have plugged into it. Needless to say, it's pretty frustrating. I was hoping to setup the external drive so all of my computers could use it as a central device, but needing to reboot all the time kind of kills the convenience. Wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

Relax. It's normal for an iOS device to turn on when it is plugged in and charging. You didn't hurt anything. As long as it has a charge, you can use it and it should come with a sufficient charge to use it right out of the box.
Your phone will be fine. Charge it when you need to charge it. You didn't damage anything.

  • Western Digital My Book (white light) not connecting...need advice

Hi...I have been scouring forums for the past hours trying to trouble shoot this issue.
At one point (it may have been with Leopard) I was able to back up all my pictures and music onto my WD MyBook. It showed up in Finder. In fact, when in Finder I GO>>CONNECT TO SERVER....My Book is listed as one of the recent servers. However, when I try to connect it cannot find it.
I tried the Safari Bonjour...MyBook is not there either.
    I have reboot my computer.
    I have reboot the MyBook.
I unplugged the MyBook and the router (Airport) for 30 seconds, then plugged it all back in reconnecting.
I pressed the little reset button the MyBook.
No connection. Both the top and bottom bright white lights are illuminated and not blinking or anything on the MyBook.
Help....this was the 1TB external hard drive and I really don't want to just give up and spend another 200+ on a new external drive. Luckily my mac has behaved and I don't necessarily need my backup files...but I want to have a reliable backup in case something does happen. I am a photographer so backing up my many many files is necessary.
Any suggestions? If there is no way to fix (which is what I gathered from some of the forums I already visited)...then what other system besides western digital can you recommend? Apple is super expensive....Iomega seems decent, and also LaCie...but then again, I thought Western Digital was good too. Help....

Pondini will probably have my head, but I'll go ahead with my suggestion anyway:
    1. Because WD drives (enclosures) are not the most "trouble free", I'd seriously consider getting another external drive such as a LaCie or one from OWC (madsales.com).
    2. I personally have chosen not to use Time Machine; I don't like it because I can't boot with it and I don't feel it is very reliable either, so I'd suggest downloading either SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner (I use both). Install it in your Applications folder. Open Disk Utility and - either with your WD or the new drive attached - format the drive (click on the partition tab):
Choose how many partitions you want  (one or ?) and name each one.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Under Options, choose GUID partition scheme (necessary to make it bootable).
    Click Apply.
NOTE: this will erase all contents, so if you have anything on it you need, temporarily copy if elsewhere via drag 'n drop.
After it's finished, open CCC or SuperDuper.
Choose your internal as the source.
Choose the external (partition) as the destination.
    Click on copy.
When finished (my 80 GB takes about 40+ minutes), test it by going to Startup Pane in System Preferences, choose the external clone and click on Restart. If it does, all is well, and you can go back to restart with your internal. Once back on the internal, you can eject the external and unplug it/turn it off.
You now have a fully bootable clone of your entire system.
I update mine about once a week (that is all I need) - you can do it more or less often.
Now, I maintain two bootable clones because hard drives can (and will) fail at any time. So, you could do a Time machine backup on the other one if you want.

  • Problem with 23 inch, basically not working...need advice

Hi, I have had the 23 inch for a couple of months and one day, it stopped working as usual. For the most part, when you turn the computer on, the monitor will 50 % of the time turn on, 50 % not. If it does turn, as soon as the computer turns the monitor to sleep, it will 10 % of the time turn on, 80 % not turn on again at all until the computer is turned off (and sometimes this does not help and all you can do is try the next day), and 10 % flicker and image of the screen. I have deleted the plist files, created new profiles, tried other macs, reset logic board and video ram with no help. The only way to get the monitor to turn back on (and this does not work all the time) is to unplug the monitor from the power block and plug it back in. You will have to do this several times for it to work, and then the monitor will work fine until either the monitor goes to sleep or the Mac. I have taken the monitor to the Apple store and it turned on for them so they told me to get lost. It looks like this is going to be something I need to figure out first or wait until it never turns on again...which should be soon at the rate it quits. Any advice or no what is wrong so atleast I can tell them at the Apple store (after I make the 400 mile trip there)? I originally thought it was the power supply but after trying another one at the store, mine worked too. Its not the power mac because I tried it on my powerbook and it doesnt work either. By the way, this all started once I plugged it into my powerbook for the first time. Its getting irritating trying to turn it back on when I am doing work... Please help!

Probably, the dropping caused a serious problem on the hard drive of your iPod. See doing the following helps ..
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
