Airport Extreme not hard-resetting.

I have been trying to reset my Airport Extreme to factory settings. We forgot the base station password and accessing keychain for password information is not possible as we sold the iMac it was configured with.
Here are steps I've taken:
I broke power from the Airport Extreme, then plug it back in. I then hold the Reset button, it begins to flash a green colour rapidly, after releasing it, it stops blinking green and resumes the steady yellow blinking which is much slower. It remains still named and still requires the password to modify settings.
I even tried holding it and seeing if I can connect to it while holding it down...nope. Still no luck. Still remains named.
Perhaps I'm missing something here. Anyone have any ideas? The idea is to restore to factory settings so we can reconfigure it (and of course make sure we have the password securely stored somewhere).

Hold in reset button.. before you power on.. make sure you feel the switch click on.. Do not apply too much pressure though or you will bend the arm.. I have seen people who think when it says press it means a 10 ton press.. no .. just enough pressure to make the switch make contact.. then power on the AEBS with your third hand.. or get a friend to plug it into the wall, flick the wall switch. Keep holding reset until the front led flashes rapidly.. then release and wait for it to reboot.
If it still doesn't work.. you have broken it..

Airport extreme is unresponsive after interruptions in power and requires a hard reset to get working again. It will also freeze during heavy usage from multiple computers and then a hard reset is necessary to get it working again. It is becoming a chore.

The obvious answer is that if you are using firmware 7.5.2, downgrade to 7.4.2.
Otherwise if you can simulate a power fail by pulling the plug and still have the problem then

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.

No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.

If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

Have you tried resetting the modem? Power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again.
Also, some ISPs require physically detaching their cable from the modem for it to be fully reset. Literally unscrew it from the modem. Try that, in conjunction with powering it down.
Don't do anything with your Extreme, other than powering it down too, in the event the modem reset does not help. Reconfiguring it may be necessary but this is not justified quite yet.

Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and then keep holding it for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, it has now been reset.
If you try this procedure a few times and the Extreme still will not reset, then you may have a defective Extreme. Take the device to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you.....so they can take a look. Or, contact Apple Support directly.

Airport Extreme usb hard drive connection loss after closing finder window

I just did a software update on my MacBook Pro and now I am experiencing a weird Airport Extreme usb hard drive issue. I can see the name of my airport extreme in the Shared section of my finder window. However when I click on it, the finder indicates the it's connecting, but it stops immediately and displays the 'Not Connected' message. When I click on the 'Connect As' button, I am prompted to enter my password and if I click 'Connect', it just spins out endlessly. However, when I re-enter the password and press Connect, my usb drive mounts. I can view, access and use the drive's contents, but if I close the finder window, the connection drops and I have to re-connect. What else is weird, is that once I see my drives, the finder indicates that I am connected as another user(not a user native to this computer). This issue did not exist before my software update.
My software log update indicates that the following items have been installed:
Canon Printer Software Update 2.3 and Security Update 2010-003.
I suspect it has something to do with the Security Update. Is there a way I can revert to the previous security version? Or is there any other solution that could help me avoid re-connecting to my airport extreme usb hard drives?
I will really appreciate any feedback.

Sure there's a »fix« with Apple software. You'll need to install the Developer Tools (Xcode) from the Snow Leopard Install DVD, though.
After you've done that, you can use "SetFile" to clear the Alias bit from the misbehaving Volume:
/usr/bin/SetFile -a a /Volumes/<YourExternalDriveName>
Please keep in mind that using this command might be dangerous, so don't try this solution unless you feel confident on the command line. (See http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an1/SetFile.1.html or invoke /usr/bin/SetFile without arguments for more info on the SetFile command.)

I wanted to know whether i can diffuse music to the bluetooth only speakers from a airport extreme-connected hard drive through my mac?

I'm interested in the new soundlink mini Bose wireless speakers that function only via bluetooth. I wanted to diffuse music to them from an airport extreme connected hard drive through my macbook air. I don't want to stoc music on my mac given the limited flash drive and don't want to go though wires again. Is that possible? Also I can't go with airport express since those speakers don't have the airplay function.

Using Airport Extreme- Printers & Hard Drives - Mac and WIndows XP Network

I might be asking a really dumb question now, I have a Mac Pro, a PC my sons use and a laptop my wife uses. The PC and laptop both run XP Pro.
I have my Airport Extreme set up and working well with my BT Home Hub acting as my modem only - that went much easier than I thought.
All I want to do is to set up a network - my Mac (wired) to my Airport Extreme with a Canon Printer and external hard drive. I also want to be able to share files on the PC and Laptop (wireless) with other users as well as the printers. Ideally, i'm looking for a video website that will easily show how to set this up. I appreciate I may need to view several clips to get this sorted. I have tried YouTube without much success.

In the MobileMe preference pane on the Mac Pro, enable the Back To My Mac feature. Then on your remote Mac the Mac Pro should appear in the Finder's sidebar as a shared item.

the information told me to update firmware first, but a password is needed to update this and I forgot the password. So I skipped this part and it worked for me. Thank you. The manual said to hold the reset button for no more than 1 sec, your info said 10 secs. This did the trick. Appreciate it.

Greetings. I received notice that there was a firmware update for my Airport Express. Tried to install and the update process just hangs and eventually times out. Am trying to view settings on the Airport Express but the wait symbol just spins. Attempted to do both a hard reset and factory default reset and neither of those are working either. Did the failed firmware update process pooch the Express?

Hi there, I experienced the same problem. Here was my solution, it takes a lot of pressing on that reset button. I have a Time Capsule, too, so if you don't maybe this isn't as helpful as you'd prefer....but here goes. I pressed the reset button, briefly mind you, while it was plugged in. This caused the LED to start blinking rapidly yellow. Then I connected an ethernet cable to the EXPRESS and unplugged, then plugged back in. I could suddenly "see" the Airport Express again in the admin utility. Then I logged on to it, and chose to Restore Default Settings. Restarted again. Then and only then, I reapplied the firmware update 7.3.2, which appeared to work fine. Then after that, I was able to re-add it as "Extend My Wireless Network" into the Airport Extreme's wifi net. I hope that this helps. Remember, pressing the reset button is the key. The Hard Reset method did not work after the incomplete firmware update that was the precursor to all the problems that you and I were having. Good luck!

External hard drive connected to Airport Extreme not working on PC

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.1 and my work laptop, which runs Windows 7. I have a WD 2TB external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme, with 1TB formatted for Mac and the other 1TB formatted in FAT format. My Macbook can connect to the drive and read/write perfectly fine, but I'm not even seeing the drive on my PC anywhere. I'm wanting to use the Mac formatted partition to backup photos and personal documents and the FAT partition to backup my work.
Is there a setup thing I need to do on either the Airport Extreme or on my PC to connect to have the drive visible? Both drives are setup to allow file sharing and my Airport Extreme is running version 7.6.4.

Airport extreme hosted hard drive not recognized by Disk Utility

Hi, all. I've had success for a month now hosting a 4T hardrive wirelessly via my Airport Extreme. I use it for Time Machine backups and remote storage. So I'd like to repartition that hardrive via Disk Utlity, however Disk Utility no longer recognizes the 4T hardrive hosted via my Airport Extreme. How can I get my Airport Extreme external drive to show up in Disk Utility so I can format it again?

I'm not sure you're aware but I wanted to let you know that using an external drive connected to the Airport USB port as a Time Machine backup device isn't supported/recommended by Apple. don't be surprised if you think it's working and you go to use it to restore from a crash, and you can't. Just a warning.

Windows Vista Home Premium Computer Doesn't Connect to Airport Extreme's Hard Drive

I have a hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme. The hard drive is recognized by the Windows computer; that is a dialog box appears that states 'The Airport Disk became available'. But when I attempt to supply a password it tells me "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure netBIOS is enabled and try again (53)."
The hard drive connected to the Airport Extreme is 500Gb and formatted as FAT32. The hard drive has its own power source. There are no spaces in the hard drive's name or in the Airpot Extreme's name. I've assigned WORKGROUP as the workgroup on both the Airport Extreme and the Windows Vista comptuer. I've enabled netBIOS for the TCP/IPv4 connection.
The vista computer is connected to the Airport Extreme via an ethernet cable; the cable is connected to a LAN slot of the Airport Extreme.
All help is appreciated.

Sounds like you are on the right track but I will have to say that I am very sorry but I am out of ideas - you are getting way out of my experience level - and I have to apologize about my previous post - I spelled Tesserax name wrong - you need help from one of the high level participants - I answered your orignal post because I have had sharing issues with Vista and thought that I could help - having said all that, I just thought of a last resort suggestion - make sure that your hard drive works when connected directly to your computer and then reset your Extreme and start from scratch - if that doesn't work then you might just have an incompatible setup - also if you wait a while and reword your question with your new findings, maybe a more experienced participant will respond - good luck.

HAAALP!!! AIRPORT EXTREME NOT SHOWING UP ON AIRPORT UTILITY

I have two airport extremes one to make network and one to expand it. the one i have to make the network is working fine and is a FINE peice of machinery. but the second one i have to extend my network will not show up on airport utility. and no i am not a stupid and didnt plug in the wires right everything is in perfectly and i use to be able to configure it then one day it just stops so i reset and configure it with airport utility. but after it restarts the airport and updates it. it will not show up on airport utility. PLZ help i have tried everything reset it a millions time and some times it will show up then i will change the settings again!! and it will not show up again!!!!! plzz plzz HELP

they are already in the same room and i am doing it on the same computer and it feels like it has gone into a land it can not come back from. also i just realized that it stays amber constantly like its in its startup process. and after a while the light just goes OFF. so idk and i have hard reset it and isnt it supposed to flash lights (cause it doesnt) when i hard reset it. well idk its weird its like it take forever to startup or something cause all of the sudden it will show up on airport utility but after i configure it again it restarts and can not be found again. ;{

Airport Extreme not connecting to Internet

Here's my setup:
imac with Airport Extreme in home office
Airport Express hooked up to home ethernet network in family room to stream itunes (or connect laptop at other end of house)
Just got home and tried connecting my work powerbook to the Airport Extreme network, and suddenly it does not work. Basically times out after trying to connect to internet, even though i get full bars signal-wise, and network diagnostic says i should be connected. I can connect to the Airport Express network in the family room just fine. And my internet connection is working fine over the ethernet network.
Has my Airport Extreme bitten the dust? It's showing full bars, but my Canon i960 stopped printing from it the other day. I thought that was just a problem with the printer, but maybe the problem is my base station?
ps running all the lastest software...
Any suggestions? (Tried restarting cable modem, Airport Extreme, computer, etc. No go.

Hmmm... That's odd that you can't administer the Airport Base Station
from the portable computer (the one you'd later use wirelessly) and
essentially check the thing out thoroughly; see if the firmware and
other things are up to par and the settings are chosen properly.
You'd use the ethernet cable in either case, to access the Base from
the portable or the tower; when you are doing an occasional test and
reset of the Base station. Sometimes, details make a difference.
Another factor may be in how you have the Base station set up to
share internet among computers; the ethernet-only G4 that sees
the through-ported IP dataflow should also be able to administer
the base station. But it may require the Portable, hardwired, to
check the settings and get it to work. I had a similar issue once
with my primary AEBS and had been administering it via a non-
wi-fi B&W G3 tower on ethernet cable; the other computers were
all wi-fi. That worked out great. Currently, I alternately run the iMac
G4 via wireless, and sometimes by wire. I have both set up & ready
and only need to go into the control panel/system preferences; to
make a change. Sometimes the wireless telephone (2.4GHz) is too
close and kills the wireless to my desktop Mac; so I change to wire.
What kinds of addresses are you seeing in your set-up for IP
to each computer? Unless you do actual file-sharing between
them, you can set that up so each computer has a full ISP
address; not those 10.0... or 193.00. or other networking ones.
Sharing a printer is another matter, if you run your AEBS as
though it were a wireless router only, it would be trial & error;
if set up to be wireless printing you'd probably need to get a
wireless USB module to see if that'd work for the G4.
The deal you are talking about, above, is how the device
works. Your G4 tower sees the internet via the through-port
in the AEBS router; it is a wired & wireless router, plus it
can give you wireless printing because it has a USB port.
But only when it is set up correctly. That is easier to do
than it is to write about. When mine fails, I look into it;
and as I suggested in other posts, it will just work later.
PS: In your Portable computer's System Preferences/
Network control pane, see what order it shows the
items or pathways available to connect to the net are
in; if the wireless airport isn't at the top of the list &
is not activated, drag it there. The check-boxes by
each option of course, need to be activated as needed.
When you see a signal, it should be able to find the IP
if the other settings were correct. Sometimes, the basic
defaults work OK right out of the box.
In the portable's System Profiler, you could also see if
there is an assigned IP address given to the computer.
At that point, there should be no reason for it to not work.
Like I said, it is harder to write or talk about it; easier to
see the things and work the strings in the right order!
