Airport Extreme on Comcast Digital Phone System

The Airport Literature mentions not to try to connect the airport to a digital phone line. Unfortunately, Comcast cable phone service is digital. Is there anything I can do other than go back to a non digital system to reconfigure the airport base station? What does a digital system do to the airport base station. One thing I noticed is I cannot change anything on the station?

academicsupport, Welcome to the discussion area!
Digital phone lines don't work with analog 56k modems like the one in the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Connecting a digital phone system to the 56k modem can destroy the modem.
If you have digital phone, do you also have the possibility for cable Internet? That is really what you want. You will then connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the AEBS.

  • Using Airport Express with Comcast Digital Broadband/Telepony Modem

I recently converted from Comcast's broadband modem to their combined modem for digital phone and internet. I can't connect both my G5 and the airport express to the modem simultaneously. Airport express set-up configuration shows a broadband modem with 2 ethernet ports. My modem only has 1. The modem is Touchstone Telephony modem by Arris. Has anyone made this type of connection work with this modem?
    Here is my set-up:
iMac G5 connected via ethernet to telephony/broadband modem (basement)
    Airport Express (basement)
    iBook G4 (1st floor)
I plan to purchase an airport express base and move the airport express to the 1st floor so I can use the iBook on the 3rd floor. Before I spend the money, I want to make sure this will work.
    Thanks!

    Hi Soraya,
I assume your iMac G5 does NOT have a Airport Card?
It seems you will need a Router in order to get all your computers and the Airport Express to connect to the internet.

  • Airport Extreme blocking internet on phone and ipad but not imac

I got a new TIme Warner cable modem yesterday and since then my Airport Extreme does not work properly.
Time Warner see it at their end but told me that it blocks the signal from the modem to the computer.
However after much fiddling around with it I managed to get it working again with my computer.
So now I have wireless internet on my computer, but although the router is recognized by my ipad and my phone it won't connect them to the internet.
I restarted all devices multiple times and I even reset the entire network.
    What is going on?
Also, I'm using an old Airport Extreme (the round one) that Apple no longer supports, however I also have a newer square version, but my computer doesn't recognize it at all. What gives?

I have had the same issue for the past few weeks and finaly it is resolved. I had the regular modem from Timewarner and it was working perfectly with my AEBS for the past 2 years. No issues at all. Out of nowhere 3 weeks ago my mo AEBS started getting the 169.x.x.x ip address therefore not communicating with the modem. Cutting the story short, I had Timewarner's Tier 1, 2 and 3 involved. 3 different techs and their suppervisors visited my house pointing finger at the Apple and I contaced Apple and got no resolutions either. The AEBS at somepoit would connect to the internet and then stop communicatiog due to invalid ip address. I decided to change my modem to a more advanced modem ARRIS TG852 (Telephony modem with wireless) from TimeWarner. That did not solve the issue either. I also tried the solution Tesserax offered above but unfortunatly it did notwork for me. as of one houre ago I resolved the problem and would like to share it with you.
    Standard Timewarner modem:
    1. Call Timewarner and have the tech support configure your modem remotely into a Bridge Mode. (yes that simple)
    2. Factory reset you AEBS and go through the setup.
ARRIS modems or any other wifi capable modems/routers:
    1. Call Timewarner and have the tech support configure your WiFi modem remotely into a Bridge Mode. (yes that simple) Sadly enough non of the techs offered this to me or was even aware that this will resolve the issue. Now they know. LOL
    OR
    1. Get to your routers setup page. for ARRIS go to http://192.168.100.1
    2. Login as admin and use default password "password" to login.
    3. go to Firewall tab and disable the firewall (your AEBS will have its own firewall)
    4. to to Wireless tab and Disable wireless (uncheck the box)
    5. go to LAN tab and under the NAT title which is close to the bottom of the page select "Bridge"
This option will reset your modem. Give it a few minutes for your modem to reestablish connections with its center and come back to life.
Now your Timewarner WiFi modem is turned into a dumb modem (bridge mode) and your AEBS will work like a charm.
    6. Factory reset you AEBS and go through the setup.
It only took me 3 weeks to figure this out by trying any possible combination of settings and resetings and reconfiguration you can imagin. I have recreated this issue and resolved it following these steps and it worked for me. I hope it works for anyone else that may be facing the same challenge.
    Cheers

  • Trying to connect airport extreme to comcast provided ubee modem. Light on airport green, but no internet access.

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
but attempts at putting it in bridge mode just causes the light to go yellow and give warning of "No DNS Server" and "No internet connection"
I am able to connect to the internet when I connected directly to the modem.
    I'm running OS 10.8.5
previously had DSL modem and connected after a few easy tweaks of the NAT settings before. am unsure what the issue is on this on... have used up my rather limited tech knowledge.
    any thoughts?
    Thank you!

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
Ubee provides both cable modems and gateway devices. What is the model number of yours?
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
By default, the AirPort Extreme would performing as a router with both NAT & DHCP enabled. Also, it would act as a DHCP server for the local network and provide out Private IP addresses in the range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.1.1.200. The WAN-side IP address of the Extreme should be a Public one and provided to you by your ISP via the Ubee modem. Did you perform a "factory default" reset on the Extreme before attempting to connect it to the modem?

  • Airport extreme and Comcast

I can't seem to get my (new) airport extreme to work. I have internet access (via Comcast) when I go directly from the router to my Mac. When I plug it into the airport extreme unit, I get the green light, but my Mac can't seem to find the signal. Any ideas?

That Comcast modem needs to be completely reset to be able to issue an IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
Power off the modem completely by pulling the power cable from the back of the device or from the wall AC socket. Pull the battery as well if it is easily accessible.
Let the modem rest for 30 minutes
Power off the AirPort Extreme as well and leave it off
After the power down period, reinstall the battery if it was pulled, start the modem first and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
Then, start the AirPort Extreme the same way
Check the network and report on your results.

  • Vuze + Airport Extreme BS + Comcast ISP

I recently switched to Comcast from ATT. I have never had a port or NAT problem with ATT using Vuze or other P2P. As soon as Comcast was installed, my ports are closed. I have gone through the port forwarding again and still nothing.
I disconnected the airport extreme and hooked directly into the Comcast modem (which also has telephone) with my MacBook Pro via ethernet. The port is open doing it this way, no problem. As soon as I reconnect the AE, it is closed again.
Why is the modem not allowing the AE to open the port? Or how do I configure differently? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help. I've searched the web for answers and others have had these issues, but as soon as they fix them they do not report back how they fixed it!

    HI Russell,
I think VUZE is the issue. Their site indicates the requirements are 10.4.8 and up but that doesn't mean it's compatible with Snow Leopard even though it says Intel based.

  • Connect my Airport Extreme to Comcast modem

I have just ordered Comcast high speed internet service and they installed a Motorola Surfboard SB5120. They plugged it into my computer directly and I thought it was running fine. When I disconnected and tried to install it in my Apple Extreme, it doesn't work. I understand from reading some of the other topics that Comcast protects its bandwidth by not allowing routers to distribute to other computers, but can I change that?
I use 2 hard wire and 2 laptops around the house, can anyone help me configure the modem to distribute the signal?

I have an Arris TM402P cable modem that I rent from Comcast and it has a reset button on back which is accessed by pushing in with a pin or tack. This works to reset the modem without removing battery. Comcast said to disconnect modem from router or computer, hold for 10 seconds, allow to reset for 3 minutes or more, and then connect to router or directly to computer (Mac). This works fine for me and yes you can not switch from direct connection to router or back again without a hard reset such as above.
BTW, are you happy with performance of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station with Comcast. I'm thinking of getting one since my DLink router seems to be on it's way out - 2+ years old. thanks

  • Airport extreme with comcast, very slow wireless connection

well i am creating this new thread becuase after searching this board and trying others' suggestions all day nothing is seeming to improve my wireless speed.
i have used the extreme base station with other internet providers and the wireless speed was amazing. however, i have just moved and we got the comcast 3-1 deal, so we get internet, cable, and telephone all over the same line. we have 6mb/sec and i did a line test and the speed from comcast was fine. so i think that it must be a setting on the base station.
i have done a recycle of the power on the network wating about 30-45 minutes inbetween each power on (multiple times). modem, base station, computer. and still there is no improvement.
i have done hard resests of both the modem and the base station, and still no improvement. i have also done soft resests of both.
furthermore, i have taken the network security off and that did not improve the speed either.
but...when i connect to the internet using the lan port of the base station the internet flys.
what am i doing wrong??? any help would be greatlty appreciated.
the comcast modem is an Arris telephony modem, i am using a mac book circa oct. 2006, with the airport extreme base station.

Hello eisnachm. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The only thing that you didn't mention doing was checking for Wi-Fi interference.
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like KisMAC, MacStumbler, iStumbler, or IPNetMonitorX to determine potential areas of interference...and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them.

  • Facetime "Fails" to connect via Airport Extreme using Comcast?

    Greetings,
First time poster... tried researchings specifics on my situation and couldn't find anything so posting here to see if a solution has been found.
I used to have Verizon DSL for ISP with Airport Extreme as my wireless router.  Everything worked  including Facetime (only issue was the need for speed).  Switched to Comcast as ISP which uses cable and had the Tech reconnect it to the Airport Extreme to behave as the wireless router.  Internet is on and good... got a green light on the Airport Extreme.  However, when attempting to connect via any device using Facetime (it will ring but as soon as it is answered I get "Fail" message and it ends) be it my laptop, desktop or either of our iphones I have IOS7 and IOS6 respectively same error.  Did not make any modifications to Airport settings or any of my devices.
When checking the common response to this issue was a potential "Blocked Port" situation... but by digging a little deeper it appears that Comcast does not block ports that are relevant to Facetime (please confirm).  I didn't see anything else that would suggest a solution at this point.
Help would be greatly appreciated as we enjoy using facetime to have our 6 month old daughter connect to our grandparents.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The USB port on an AirPort Base Station other than the 802.11n model is only for use with an USB printer; hard and flash drives will not be recognized. The compatible base stations include version 5.0 of the AirPort software on a CD.

  • Setting up Airport Extreme and Comcast

    Hi!
I recently purchased and Airport Extreme for my G4 iBook. I already have Comcast for my regular HP computer. I cannot sucessfully set up the Airport to work with my Mac. I don't have Apple care and my husband uses windows and has not been able to do it either. I have heard that the it's difficult to hook up the Airport w/Comcast...is this true? I called comcast and they said they didn't know how to do it...I would have to call Apple.
Anyone out there that can offer a step by step on how to get this working? Or does anyone know if I can hire someone to come my house to hook it up? I'm getting a little frustrated. Thanks for any advice!

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Portscanning my System?

Bought the AEBS today and got it set-up in about five minutes; very nice. I then moved on to another (and completely different) problem, which involved opening system.log. What I discovered thousands of messages that read along the lines of:
    "Aug 3 17:13:13 My-Computer kernel[0]: Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP xx.xx.xx.3:51539 from xx.xx.xx.1:192"
where xx.xx.xx.3 is my G5 and xx.xx.xx.1 is the AEBS. I don't know which port number the AEBS started with (hopefully not 1), but it is clearly incrementing by one.
I was able to learn that 192 is used by the base station for PPP status or discovery, but could not find anything more. (If it is of help, I'm connected to the net via Verizon and a DSL modem. I set up the AEBS using the wizard, which defaulted to PPP over Ethernet.) My questions are:
    - What exactly is it doing?
    - Will it stop once it gets through the full range of port numbers?
    - Can I make it stop? (I realize it's not really hurting anything, but it certainly seems like bad behavior to me.)
    - Will it do this each time I boot my system?
    Any other information is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

Will the airport extreme base station work with WD my cloud 3 tb drive?
Yes it should work with your AirPort Extreme base station.
Would I connect it to the airport extreme or could I connect it to my imac ethernet connection.
You'll want to connect it to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme and Talk Talk phone line

I recently switched from my BT landline/Sky broadband, to Talk Talk landline & broadband. I have found my Sky branded wireless router to be incompatible however. I really want an Airport Extreme for my Intel iMac and the PS3 but wondered if anyone knows if there are any connection problems, ie can it be done?!

Not sure what you're trying to do here,if you are thinking of just connecting your ADSL line straight into the airport express it will not work, you still need to have an ethernet modem between your ADSL line and the airport express then you can configure wireless for your LAN.If you know that already and are asking if you can connect wirelessly with an iMac and a PS3 to the airport express then I do not see a problem with the iMac as for the PS3,I dont know how they operate as I am not a gamer so someone else will have to answer that one.

  • Can the latest generation Airport Extreme support Comcast 100mbps internet service?

I have an Asus router now that I am having problems with. I would like to replace it with the latest Airport Extreme. I am currently getting speeds of 126mbps down and 24 up. Would I be able to get those speeds on the latest Airport Extreme.
If it can I will get it. What're your thoughts?
    Thanks!

I don' think that anyone here has a crystal ball that is good enough to be able to tell you how a given product will work on your network in your home.
I use a Zoom modem with an AirPort Extreme with 100 Mbps service from the ISP.
If I run an Internet connection test using a popular site like www.speedtest.net and connect my Mac directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme, I typically get 100-105 Mbps.
If I switch to wireless, and my Mac is within 10-20 feet of the AirPort Extreme in the same room, I will get about 95 Mbps on average
If I move the Mac to the next room, so the signal must pass through a wall to reach the Mac, I get about 80 Mbps on average
If I move the Mac a few more rooms away, the speed drops to about 50 Mbps
    You get the idea
If I run an option-click check with the WiFi icon at the top of the screen, and the Mac is near the AirPort Extreme, you can see the result below.
That might be an impressive number to look at, but the fact remains that the speed of the Internet connection will only be as fast as the ISP can deliver.
Your results will likely be different, and you won't know what they will be until you try things out in your home.  Buy from Apple and you have 14 days to return the product for a refund or credit.

  • Connecting my airport extreme to comcast cable modem-- AGHHH

I've had three Comcast techies to my house since switching over to their triple play offer. Today, I finally got connected to the Internet, through their cable wired into my house, and connecting their modem to my Mac mini (which does not have wireless card). I want to hook up two other laptops in the house, but can't figure out how I do that? The Comcast guy today said with an ethernet cord. So I've plugged the cord into the back of my Extreme, but the other end doesn't fit into the only slot remaining on the back of the cable modem -- which is labeled "phone"... Does anyone know how I do this?
    Thanks,
    Jill

You need either a router or an ethernet hub/switch between the modem and the computers to give you the needed ethernet ports. Hubs/switches are cheaper but, depending on the Comcast policy on multiple computers on one modem, may not all work at the same time.
A router, on the other hand, allows up to something like 255 devices to be connected. Instead of the Comcast server passing out IP addresses as would happen with a hub, the router issues the addresses to each device. This is useful when the ISP limits how many IP addresses can be assigned to one account (we had this with our ISP--limit of three--and is why we now use a router).
    Basically, the arrangement is:
cable from wall >>> cable modem >>> router or hub >>> multiple ethernet lines out to individual computers
