Airport Extreme only works behind a router

Yesterday my cable modem suffered some kind of malady, rendering it inoperable. Don't know what happened, but it just stopped working. Time Warner replaced it, but now I've got the following problem.
The original cable modem went to an SMC Barricade router, and one of the LAN ports was connected to the WAN port on my Airport Extreme. Other ports on the router were used for connecting an old G4 (no wifi card) and a printer (Laserwriter 320 with Farallon iPrint interface). Our laptops connected to the Airport Extreme and the G4 accessed the internet through the router.
With the new cable modem, if I connect the router to it, nothing can access the internet. Putting the G4 on the cable modem by ethernet works, so the cable modem is working. I think whatever took out the cable modem, took out the SMC router, too. I can't even get the G4 to print through the router, so I think it's toast.
When I hook up the Airport Extreme to the cable modem, my laptops can see the Airport network fine, and under network status it says they are connected to the Airport network and are on the Internet, but no web page ever loads and eventually I get a statement in my browser that I'm not connected to the internet and to use Network Diagnostics. Network Diagnostics never finds and error and says to contact my ISP. HOWEVER, if I connect the G4's ethernet cable to the LAN port on the Airport Extreme, the G4 can access the internet, no problem. It's like the Airport Extreme will allow an ethernet LAN connection to the internet, but not a wireless connection. And I've got great signal strength and by all appearances everything should be working wirelessly, but they're not.
Then I remembered I had my sister-in-laws NetGear N wifi router in storage (I wish I could keep it, but I'm holding her stuff while she's moving and she'll want it back). I hooked it up to the cable modem and we could access wireless internet, and the G4 and printer could as well through the ethernet ports on the router. So it's not an ISP issue, it's an Airport issue.
On a lark, I hooked up the Airport Extreme to one of the LAN ports on the Netgear router. Now my laptops can access the internet through the Airport Extreme. ??????
Why is it that I can wireless connect to the internet when the Airport Extreme is going through the NetGear N router, but not when it is connected to the cable modem directly? With the original cable modem it was going through a router, too. Why won't it work when wired directly to the cable modem?
Update -- I did see that connection sharing was set to off (bridge mode). However, when I change it to "share a public IP address" and update it, I get an error that the DHCP address conflicts with the WAN IP address and to change it. The WAN IP of the Airport Extrme is 192.168.2.2. I've changed the beginning and end DHCP addresses to numbers much larger, like 192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.200, but it still tells me that's a conflict. I don't see how that range could be a problem, so what am I missing?

I performed a reset on it from within the Airport Utility, but got an error after updating saying it couldn't connect to the AEBS. No signal from the base station. Hmmmm.
Then I pushed the reset button on the AEBS itself. I still couldn't see it wirelessly. I hooked up an ethernet cable to the LAN port on the AEBS, then I could access it.
I put in all the old values and I could now get a signal from the AEBS, so I disconnected the ethernet cable. But for whatever reason I couldn't access any web pages wirelessly, although the Network pref pane said I was connected by Airport.
I power cycled the cable modem. No change.
I checked every setting I could in the Airport Utility, nothing seemed amiss, but it wasn't getting an IP address. Embroiled in frustration, I restarted the base station.
And Voila! I can now access the internet wirelessly.
So, I think some serious ghost got in the machine, but a couple of resets, and a restart, and it seems to be working.
Next, let me hook up the ethernet printer and see if it "sees" it over the network. Ah, yes it does.
And I swapped an old airport card out of a laptop and put it in the G4, so it's wireless now, too.
Problem seems to be solved.
Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • How to get an Airport Extreme to work behind a wired Router????!!!!!!

Hey all major issue I am at my inlaws and they have a cable modem going into wired linksys router in their basement where the cable comes in and then distributing out through the house ethernet to key areas. Recently they have gotten wireless laptops and want to setup their airport extreme off of one of these ports so they can sit out on their deck and use the net.
I tried the auto-configuration and get no internet connectivity, occasionally it comes through at like 4 k/s(using the WAN port, the Lan port gives no connection like it should). If I plug directly into the same port I get 8MB down and 1MB up, so I am confident its not the ethernet coming to the location.
Additionally, if i take the extreme downstairs and run it form the cable modem and do the autosetup it works beautifully as well.
So obviously the autosetup isnt working for the Airport running behind the router why? I have tried to muss with the settings, run it in bridge mode and such but to no avail.
Any advice on how to do this? The base is updated to its latest firmware 5.7.

I have been using an AEBS connected to one port of my D-Link Router for years. 2 months ago I have upgraded to OS 10.5 and have had no problems with having wireless computers connecting. I just decided to change my Security to WPA and after the Airport Utility (V.5.3.2) did the settings UPDATE, I haven't been able to connect via WIFI. I had all WIFI IP address be in the 10.0.1.1 range, and now I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work like I did but no luck.
I should mention that my router is set for static IP because of webcasting and other requirements.
I have searched and asked and can't solve the problem.

  • Airport Extreme - Only the 802.11n only (5 ghz) works

Airport Extreme - Only the 802.11n only (5 ghz) works
Posted: Sep 21, 2008 2:50 AM Reply Email
I just bought an new Airport extreme Base station, and i am not very good with network settings. I am experience an weird problem.
I follow the instruction to set up the Airport extreme. I get the green light on the extreme, everything went well up to that point. but then when i try to connect to the internet wirlessly, it won't let me.
The weird thing is... the computers that were connecting wirely to the Airport extreme using ethernet works fine. but my macbook pro and along with other labtops are not being able to connect to the internet. On my macbook pro, it first says connection failed after i put in my password. but after couple try on entering the password( i thought i typed it in wrong), it finally connected to the network but still no internet. then I went to the network preference panel to check, it says i am connected but with a self-assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet.
The even worse thing is... if i change my airport extreme to only broadcast the 802.11n only (5 GHZ) mode, everything works fine. But of course I have some device in the house are not N compatible, which makes this "solution" pretty useless. I understand n is faster and all, but I still want my G compatible device to work with my network.
It will be really nice if anyone can give me a solution and help me get the 802.11n (a/b/g compatible) works.
    Thank you.

I am having the exact same issue with my Macbooks. I have 2 Macbooks and they've all stopped connecting to the Airport Extreme router via wireless N. Yeah, I can switch to 5ghz mode, but then my PC laptop, iPod Touch, wireless printer, Xbox 360 wifi adapter and Nintendo Wii all can't connect as they all use wireless a/b/g.
BRUTAL. When are we going to get a fix for this? How do I roll back to a previous rev of OSX, if that's the issue (it must be, as this recently stopped working - i.e. when I installed the latest OS update - when it has worked fine for months).

  • WiFi only works close to router, DNS fail, Signal Bars present but Safari says no Internet, I've deleted and readded through to reset and full reset, I had no problem with 4.3.2 only 4.3.3 both my iPhone4 and my iPad2. I am now beside router - no problem

    Help
WiFi only works close to router, DNS fail, Signal Bars present but Safari says no Internet, I've deleted and re-added through to reset and full reset, I had no problem with 4.3.2 only 4.3.3 both my iPhone4 and my iPad2. I am now beside router - no problem, but go 20 metres and WiFi becomes unstable. Only way to get either to work is disable WiFi either as a Hot Spot or turn it off and use the 3G connection. This worked with 4.3 & 4.3.2 what has gone wrong? I raised it at the Apple Store in Belfast as a problem but was told that there was no problem with Apple but I must have a faulty router - yeah - that's a lot of faulty routers, my home, my office, my holiday home, Starbucks, my friends house, my son's house. I've tried all the 'fixes'. I think it is a plan to force us to buy Apple Routers

Two ways out, I added two more Belkin Access Points in my house in Spain so that I'm not more than 10Mtrs away, (Reinforced Concrete & solar glass 2010)
I bought 3 Apple Airports, 1 x Extreme and 2 x Express (1 as a hard wired AP, 1 as an extender) for my other house (Brick construction 1930's)
Everthing now works perfectly, as I said 'an apple plot', so either blast them with signal or visit your nearest apple store.
Early beta iOS5 (iPad) is also much inproved in Beta 3, I have not had any problem with 'Lion'
    Happy hunting!

  • How do I configure my Airport Extreme to work in Bridge Mode and provide specific IP addresses to clients

My Airport Extreme is working with an Airport Express to wirelessly extend my wireless network.  Both Airports are configured in Bridge Mode per the instructions I found on Apple's support site.  I want to assign a specific DHCP address to a wireless camera that is in range of the Extreme, but I understand that the Extreme needs to be in DHCP Only mode to do this.  But if I change the mode to DHCP Only, the Extreme will lose contact with the Express.  How can I get both functions to work - wireless network extension and specific DHCP addresses?

Then what device is providing DHCP? Only once device per subnet should be the DHCP server. One should be DHCP and NAT and the other in Bridge mode for most home setups. The unit with DHCP and NAT should be the one connected to your cable or DSL and the other set in Bridge mode only extends your network.
On the wireless config page set whichever you're using to extend your network to "Extend a wireless network" and give it the details of the network to which you're attaching it.

  • Setting up a Apple Airport Extreme to work on the Telecom New Zealand Broadband network?

Has anyone had any success in setting up their airport extreme to work on the Telecom New Zealand broadband network without having to connect it to the modem which NZ Telecom supply?
Any advice and tips would be welcomed!

    1. Since a "router" is needed next to the cable modem and before the ethernet switch, should we put the new Extreme in that basement location? Or, should we instead put the new Extreme somewhere on the main floor of the house (connected by ethernet) and leave the old one where it is?
Assuming the older Extreme is no older than Gen3 or Gen4 it is a perfectly adequate router for the speeds that cable will generally give you.
And therefore it is best to bridge the new AC extreme and use it upstairs via ethernet. That will then give you the best wireless in the most suitable area of the house.
    2. Should we somehow bridge the two Airport Extremes (the old one and the new one) into one wireless network?
Yes, what is called roaming network. Both units create a wireless network.
You simply setup same name and same security/password on all the devices for wireless. The wireless channels are the differentiator.. and you can either leave that on auto or take some control over it and set manually. I would be inclined to do it manually just because the AC wireless needs the 149 channel for high speed AC.. so you do not want the old Extreme in the basement using that. Force that one to channel 36 or 40. However it is likely to work itself out ok on auto.. but I recommend you check it.
The apple docos on roaming are rather ancient..
Here is a post with newer info.
Setting Up Roaming - New AirPort Extremes and Utility
    3. Should we go a further step and also bridge in one or both of the old Airport Express units, perhaps on the top floor of the house for example?
Yes, if you have a black spot with poor wireless you can add the Express to help. The old ones are single band and will probably work better at 2.4ghz but whatever suits you.. perhaps setup one on 2.4ghz and one on 5ghz.

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

  • Will airport extreme card work on other wireless systems

will airport extreme card work with other networking systems such as time warner cable with a router?

Note, Airport Extreme on PowerMacs is limited to 802.11g.  If you find you get a router that is 802.11n, and have devices that need 802.11n speed, they should be on a different wireless network.  Otherwise you can set the network to be 802.11n and 802.11g for both 'n' and 'g' devices to hook up to it from the router in question.  Be sure the PowerMac in question does support Extreme, and not just the original Airport by visiting this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1621
And identifying your Mac in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
If you can't find your Mac on the article, go to Apple menu -> About This Mac and tell us the Machine ID. If it is a notebook, the name of the machine is on the screen frame. If it is a machine with a display and a built-in optical drive that has no name, it may be an iMac.  That is significant as well.  Since you posted in the PowerMac forum, without telling us your machine, we can't help you further until you do.

I have a new Airport Extreme that works well with my IMac but is intermittent with our Windows 7 PC.  Any ideas?

Thanks planb77. Your instructions worked but I had to do a little more than you stated. I did not realize that transferring files to a new computer was not enough. When the iPod synced I was told I needed to "authorize" my new computer to get my iTunes purchases to sync to the iPod. So after the initial sync, I ejected and disconnected the iPod, went into the iTunes store, set up "home sharing" and then authorized the new computer. When that was done I reconnected the iPod and was able to sync all my books and music. The only thing I couldn't do was rename the iPod as iTunes never asked me to. Is there a way to rename it after it has been set by iTunes as "owner's iPod"?

  • My airport extreme is working but will not connect to my mac pro

my airport extreme is working and all other devices connect except my mac pro computer,  How do I resolve this problem?

    Hi fdrussell,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  Were your Airport Extreme and Mac Pro communicating earlier?  If so, what changed?
First try shutting down the computer, and recycling the power to the Airport Extreme.  Then start the Mac Pro and see if that resolves the issue.
If needed, perform a Hard reset of the Airport Extreme:

  • My Airport Extreme Stops working every evening...

Funny! My Airport Extreme stops working every evening at about the same time for 4-5 hours. I am assuming that there is some sort of "usage setting" that needs to be set. Unfortunately I cannot find that setting. Any help appreciated.

A windows 7 laptop is also not seeing the airport extreme wifi signal. So I have a Mac Book Air, iPad & wired devices connected fine. I have an iPhone 3Gs, an iPhone 4 and a windows 7 PC all failing to connect. They all connect fine to other wifi devices. They all connected fine to the Airport extreme until the recent problems started. I don't think it's an iPhone issue, therefore - more likely to be an issue with the Airport extreme?

  • I have a new Airport Extreme that works great with my IMac but keeps dropping out on our Windows 7 PC.  I have tried all 11 2.4 Ghz channels and they all have dropout issues.  Any suggestions?
