Airport extreme power supply buzzing sound

My airport extreme model A1301 power brick is making a buzzing sound and I think is dropping my internet. has anyone encounter this problem?  can i just get a new power supply cord or replace the whole thing?

A "buzzing" sound typically indicates a failed or faulty electrical component. Unfortunately, there is no user serviceable items on the AirPort's power brick. However, there are a number of vendors that offer replacements. If you bought your AirPort along with a Mac laptop or desktop, and have AppleCare, it may be possible to request a replacement from Apple.

  • Airport Extreme Power Supply Voltage?

We just moved and apparently packed our AEBS separately from the power supply. Does anyone know the voltage and output current (or power) from the power supply so that I might use an alternative until we find the original?
I hate to spend the $20 (and shipping) for a unit I'll find some days from now...
    Thanks,

The Airport Extreme power supply brick output is rated at 5.1V DC, 2.4 A. The polarity of the plug's sleave is negative, the center terminal is positive.

  • Airport Extreme Power supply

I have a dome type Airport, which my daughter was using. Until she said it had stopped working. Got her to bring it over and found no power from the jack plug. So took the case apart. Power was reaching the circuit board, but no 5 volt out, so it was not the lead. I have made a start on looking for a replacement Transformer and noted that I have a Nokia phone one that has the same power out. Would it be worth fitting a jack to this, to use on the Airport. Or has someone an idea of a way of getting a replacement. Nothing like the Foxlink Tech. comes up on a search.
    Regards
    Dave

Perhaps you will have better luck posting or starting a new thread in the Airport / Time Capsule category.

As far as your problem, I don't know the power requirements of the older Airport Extreme Base stations, but if the power requirements are listed on the device and you can find a transformer that can supply that (your nokia PS), then cut and splice the old end of the broken power supply and solder (do not twist) the old end onto the new PS.
I don't know your electrical background but you want to make sure that you don't get the wires backwards on the plug. Make sure that you don't cut the wire to short on the plug end encase you need to repair again.
Another solution is a universal power supply. Radio Shack and maybe Walmart sell these. They come with different voltage settings and different plugs that you can switch out. Keep in mind that they may not have the plug end that will match your AP.

  • Airport Extreme (5th gen) Buzzing / Hissing

I have a 5th generation airport extreme that I am using with Sky fibre broadband in the UK.  It is working fine I am however experiencing an issue that I have never seen with a router before which is that it making a hissing or buzzing sound under certain conditions.
It is not really loud and I have to be pretty close to hear it, I have not done any extensive testing however it seems to only be happening when connected to my Macbook Pro over 5GHZ wifi and some activity such as copying a file is taking place.  I have owned an airport extreme (5th gen too) previously and never noticed this then although I could have just missed it.
I have found similar cases searching online but these mostly seem to indicate that they had the router replaced only to experience the same thing on the replacement!  I have a genius appointment at the weekend but as I live a fair way from the store I’d rather not go in if this turns out to be normal behaviour, especially as it is (at the moment) really not that loud. Likewise however any kind of hissing or fizzing from a router just does not seem right to me and I’d also worry that it could maybe get worse.
    Anybody else experienced this?

An Extreme should be completely silent but a buzzing or sizzling noise can emanate from components in its power supply. It may change depending on the Extreme's power demands; a function of your wireless environment.
If it were new I'd want to exchange it for another because the noise can be annoying, but if it's out of warranty I wouldn't be concerned. It does not necessarily indicate an impending failure.

  • Airport Extreme Power Failure

My airport extreme died recently. We were using it for at least two years with no problems. The power light fails to turn on when plugged in - the device is unresponsive. Any way to salvage this Airport? Or am I screwed?

    Try another power supply brick.

  • Power Supply Buzzing

I had my power supply near my head while I was laying down and I heard a sound...
My power supply is making a buzzing noise, anyone else?
    Normal?

My 85W AC adaptor is also buzzing. It does it with either the long 3-prong cord or the two-prong connection. In a Powerstrip or on an extension cord.
I have never heard this before on any other iBook, PowerBook, or MacBook that I've owned.

  • Airport replacement power supply

    Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station/802.11N-USA.
The power supply blew out in a storm.
Is the power supply on the Apple Store website
the proper replacement? It does not look the same!
It looks like the power supply for the older Airport devices.

The power supply in the AEBSn is not a user-replaceable item. You will need to have it serviced by Apple or an Apple certified technician.

  • Replacing an Airport Extreme power cord

I recently lost the power cord to my Airport Extreme Base Station in a move and wondered if anyone knew how to order a new one? I can't find them listed anywhere on the Apple Store.

I just did a quick Internet search. One option that came up is from We Love Macs.

  • 85W Power supply buzzing when computer in sleep?

    Hi all,
I just received my Early 2011 15" MBP 2.0 last week and I have noticed that the power supply emits a high-pitched buzzing/whining noise when the laptop is in sleep mode and the battery is full.
I took it into an Apple Store today and they couldn't recreate the buzzing, as I think the computer's battery wasn't full.  The guy at the Genius Bar said it was probably dirty AC power.  Does this make sense?  Has anyone else had this symptom?  Thanks.

    Hi k,
I believe that's possible. One way to check it out is to try and recreate it at another location. If you cannot, that would lean toward the "dirty power" side. If you can, then the second location would also have to have the same issue, which is certainly possible, but not probable. At that point, I'd go back to the Apple Store and see if the issue can be demonstrated on the Apple Store's power.

  • Power supply buzz on only one circuit

I am experiencing a slight but annoying buzz from what seems to be the power supply on my iMac G5 Rev B computer but I have already determined that it only occurs when using certain outlets (ones that share the same circuit). I have disconnected all devices on that circuit to no avail and I also purchased a radio shack single surge protector with 40dB noise filter which also did not work. While troubleshooting, I tried outlets on different circuits and the buzz disappears. Any recommendations on a better filter or maybe another solution. Murphy's law is that there is one perfect place for my computer in our kitchen and the outlets I can use are on that "bad" circuit.
Thanks in advance for nay help.

Latest news...this is really driving me crazy. To make sure that no other circuit was causing interference, I turned off ALL the other circuits but the buzz still kept buzzing. I borrowed a voltage meter from my dad to make sure that the outlet wasnt too low or high and it came in 122V, so no problem there.
I started thinking about anything else that might be on that circuit and decided that maybe it could be the 24 hour address light, or my low voltage landscape lighting timer, or my doorbell, or my thermostats or my irrigation timer and none of them were on that circuit.
Finally, the only thing that was left was turn off the main breaker and look at the actual panel...there is one thing that seemed weird but I would be surprised if that was the culprit....the wire that they used for that circuit is a 3 wire (2 hots)...one hot (black) goes to the circuit in question and the other hot (red) goes to a circuit listed as "micro" which I assumed was the microwave (BTW is it common to use a 3 wire line and split the hots between circuits and share the ground and neutral?)
Anyway, the weird thing is that the microwave is on the oven circuit and is not connected to that "micro" breaker...I guess that micro circuit is not connected to anything. I'm thinking that they made 2 circuits available, one for the conventional oven and one for the microwave, but it ended up that the unit we chose was a combination conventional oven and microwave.
Well, pretty crazy problem but at least I'm starting to think that it is only some weird intereference and not a fire hazard or causing damage to my iMac...although I would LOVE to solve it!
    Help any electricians out there!

  • Extreme Power Supply Whine?

ok well usually i keep my laptop plugged in all day, a portable desktop is what i use it for really. sometimes ill take it to the couch and all and occasionally i run the battery down to 20%. Whenever the battery gets this low and I plug it into the adapter, it starts a long high pitch whine. I thought i was losing it or hearing things until my mom walked into my room wondering what that noise was. The power brick was very hot and could hear the noise inside it, but further investigation showed that theres a high pitch but not as loud noise comming from my macbook.
as im typing the power brick is quiet but my macbook has a slight whine when plugged in, i thought it was tollerable at first but now it bugs me in a quiet enviornment.
Ive read a few cases on this, will Apple do something about this, and what would they do? Thank you!
    Macbook 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Mine does this too...
The power supply gets pretty hot, and it whines - its odd it whines in sync with the noise coming from my macbook.
When I put two fingers on my trackpad and scroll inside a web broswer, it stops the macbook from whining (until i stop scrolling) i dont know why it does this. If i listen to the power supply whine, it stops and starts at exactly the same time as the macbook...
When the macbook stops whining (by syncing with bluetooth in address book) the power supply makes a kind of crackling noise - but i have to put my ear to the power supply to hear this... I guess you expect a power transformer to make some noise....
I'll take my power supply and macbook to an Apple store in a few days and try to get all of my problems sorted out.

  • WRT150N power supply humming?

    Hi,
I have been having lots of issues ever since I upgraded my firmware.  I have been changing the wireless channel on a daily basis trying to find the best one with the least intereference.  Then last night when my router locked up as I was power cycling it to bring it back I heard my power supply making a buzzing sound while plugged into the wall.  I unplugged it and left it that way all night and when I plugged in this morning no buzzing sound.  I am wondering if maybe my power supply is faulty and causing my router to lock up.  When it kicks me off today I will check again.  Anyone else have this problem?

Power off the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes and start it back up to see if a simple reset will get things going again. If not, replace the power supply.

  • New Power Supply?

Any ideas where I can find a replacement power supply (cord) for my Airport Extreme? My basement flooded and although the base station was on a table top the power supply was on the floor in water. I dried it out for days and it just won't power up. Had this happen on a few other pieces of equipment and power supply was all that needed replaced. Hoping for the same on my Airport...
    Thanks in Advance...

A number of vendors provide these. I just did a quick Internet search on "AirPort Extreme Power Supply" and I got at least a dozen hits. I suggest you give it a try and shop around for the best deal.

  • Longer power cord for airport extreme

I am needing a longer power cord cord for my new airport extreme base station Model ME918LL/A.  It's the cube one with the internal power supply.  It only comes with a six foot cord and I need at least 12 feet to place it in the optimal place in our office.  In suggestions where I can find a longer cord.  Amazon and tiger direct sale cords that look similar, but I want to be careful and fry it the device.  Has anyone else had a similar problem and where did you find a longer cord?

You  may have to reconsider the diameter of holes through which
the wire has to pass, or discover an alternative power source at
a nearer distance to the AirPort Extreme (with backup power &
perhaps a backup battery type of power unit w/ power filter.)
Part of the problem with distance and electrical signal over wire
is that a larger capacity wire is needed due to loss over distance.
The greater the distance, and the larger the gauge is needed.
A lower-than-specification power at the unit likely would result
    from too-long a power lead.
My AirPort units (Extreme and Express, in use) are protected by
a battery-backup APC or other automatic device that switches to
its own battery and takes the unit offline when power it too high
or when it is too low. And not one of the cheaper backup units.
So the issue isn't just a long cord, but one of significant better
quality than just a long cord of the same external diameter case
or layer of insulation over whatever gauge lies beneath.
That's a reason why the wire isn't longer; it'd also have to be larger
in wire gauge capacity and heavier. Then other costs would add up.
You may be able to ask a professional appliance company who could
look over the AirPort Extreme power cord and match the small end
where the unit plugs in, with one of a higher gauge wire (larger wire
so that's a smaller number wire for larger size/gauge; for the distance.
However you do it, have fun...
    Good luck & happy computing!
