Airport Extreme Problem. Guest network works, but nothing else!!!

An hour or so ago, my network stopped working. My guest one works, but not my main 2.4 or 5 ghz network. I tried the Airport utility but it can't read the configuration file. HELP!!

Please power down the AirPort Extreme and your computer.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Exptreme.
Power up the AirPort Extreme first, then your computer
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the word "Status" and a window will open with information about any errors on the AirPort Extreme.

I assume that all of your WAPs are hard wired on the network.
If.....all of your WAPs are simultaneous dual band Apple AirPort devices like an AirPort Extreme or new AirPort Express.....and.....you have firmware version 7.6.3 (now 7.6.4) installed on all the AirPorts.....and.....you use AirPort Utility 6.3.1 to configure the devices......in theory.....it should work.
I don't have 6 WAPs, but I do have 3 and the network works perfectly allowing extension of both the "main" and "guest" network.

I was having this problem. The settings on my wireless router was set to hide my IP address so it wouldn't connect. When I changed that, I connected no problem. While this is annoying since I don't want my IP address to be out there, I just switch my router when I need to connect to the App/iTunes Store. Hope this helps. It worked for me.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • HT1218 Airport Extreme base station is working, but not visible on network?

My Airport Extreme base station is working:  all devices are able to connect to the internet, but Airport Utility shows no connection.  Only one computer even shows the device-- greyed out-- saying "Device not Found."  The airport utility shows version 6.2;  OS X version 10.8.3.  How do I update the base station to version 7 if the device can't be found?  And how do the devices connect to the internet without "seeing" the device?

Thanks for checking. This model should be visible in AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion.
If you have not already done so, I suggest that you perform a complete power cycle on the entire network as folllows:
Power off every network device....in any order you want
    Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme next, the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up
Check the network again using AirPort Utility
You can also temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if a connection is established that way.
If still no luck, try another Mac if you one handy. After that, all that I can suggest is that you perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and configure it again.

  • My Airport Extreme basestation used to work but upon returning from holdidays it no longer allows me to connect wirelessly through it to the internet on my iPhone, iPads, ipod touches  and my apple tv2 cannot access the network either.  Wired still works

When I returned from holidays I could not access the internet wirelessly through my Airport Extreme (5th gen) from my iPhone, iPod touches, ipads and my AppleTV 2 no longer can access the internet or the network either.  I can get access to the internet on my iMac when wired directly into an ethernet port on the Airport Extreme.  I have tried resetting my AirPort and created new networks but still doesn't want to co-operate.  If I get wireless internet it is very, very slow and incosistent.
    Any suggestions?
    Rick

I see now that long questions are not going to be read and answered.  Understandable.  Since writing this I got help on one aspect of question and now have Airport Extreme visible through Airport Utility and it seems to work.   However the wireless printer still does print. On the printer's screen, it recognizes my wireless network and connects. When I try to print from the MacBook, the usual printer icon comes up, but with Printer is Offline.  Printer is Not Connected.  So far, nothing in Apple or Brother help has given me answer to this problem.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • AirPort Extreme - No guest network tab

I'm trying to create a guest network but there is no guest tab on the utility menu... How can I resolve? Thanks!!

It doesn't say simultaneous dual band... Is that the issue?
Yes. You have an older version of the AirPort Extreme. It is not possible to "update" or "upgrade" the older version to the +simultaneous dual band+ version.
anything else i can do to set up a separate guest access
You could add an AirPort Express and connect it to the AirPort Extreme with an ethernet cable. Configure the Express with a different wireless network name and password. The downside to this type of setup is that "guests" will be able to "see" the devices on your network...other computers, hard drives, etc.
If you get the simultaneous dual band version of the AirPort Extreme and setup the Guest Network, "guests" will be able to connect to the Internet, but they will not be able to "see" any of the devices on your main or "private" network.

  • Does the newest, the fifth generation AirPort Extreme support Guest Network?

I cannot get an option to set up Guest Network to display.

I'm guessing that you are referring to AirPort Utiity 6.0 which came with the latest Lion Update. You can download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which has much more functionality. You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac (You cannot delete 6.0).
I suppose that you could try to configure the AirPort as a second router on your network, but then you will have two devices both trying to hand out IP addresses. That usually causes conflicts on a network.
if AirPort Utility allows you to do this, you will also have what is known as a Double NAT on the network, which will slow down communications and possibly not allow devices on the network to communicate correctly. I may or may not work.
I don't recommend this, but if you want to try it with AirPort Utility 5.6.....here is how:
Open AirPort Utiility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet tab, then click the Internet Connection tab
Change the settting from the correct "Off (Bridge Mode)" to the incorrect "Share a public IP address"

  • My mouse works but nothing else on my iMac is responding. Rebooting doesn't help. I'm having major issues. Help!

My iMac is not frozen; the mouse works, nothing else does. It all started with the iOS7 launch...
I attempted to update my iPhone 4 via WiFi and it crashed. Wouldn't respond to synch, charge, turn on. Notta. My dad plugged it into his iMac and it turned on, miraculously, I was practically on my way to get a new phone. Once it was back on, I attempted to update from iTunes on my desktop. No dice. I took the plunge and tried to update on WiFi again and was successful. I plugged my phone into my computer to sync music and iTunes wouldn't recognize my phone because my iTunes wasn't updated. My iTunes wouldn't update because my iMac software wasn't up to date. My desktop "update" claimed it was current. So...
I tried to download iTunes fresh, wouldn't open. I deleted my iTunes to try to download iTunes again and I'm now stuck here. It will shut down and restart if I hold the back power button. It will reboot to the same state. I have other devices but I'm emotionally attached to that computer and it cost a pretty penny. Any one have advice? Oh, and when I unplug and replug there  is no change...
    Thanks in advance. Rebecca

Can't access spec due to issues
If the iMac is frozen and you can't get to the specs, when did you buy the computer? I ask because this forum is for iMacs made before 2006 but, due to Apple's non-intuituve forum label choices, people with newer Macs often end up in this forum with little traffic.
Also the troubleshooting for the 2006 and newer iMacs can be different from the older ones.
You can try inputting your serial number (on the bottom of the computer's stand, most likely) into this Apple page:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
That can often give you the model.

  • FireFox works, but nothing else with TC

    Hello!
I recently have begun experiencing problems with my 2 week old TC. I just moved and I am receiving my net from a rental apartment in a college town. The plug into the net is simply an ethernet jack. I don't know who provides the service.
My TC only works with FireFox and not safari, itunes, or checking for updates. Yet, another mac that's in the same room as me has no problems working with safari, itunes, firefox, or software updates.
This is troubling as everything worked on both computers perfectly at the old place, which also was just an ethernet jack into the wall. The mac TC is not working with is my iMac, and it's working fine with a PowerBook G4. I'd like to also say that network diagnostics does not find any problems and says everything should be working. I am hoping for some insight into this!
    Thanks

I'd like to simply mention that I solved the problem already and to provide the reason TC wasn't working (or perhaps any wifi!).
I had recently tried to get my iPhone 3G's application NetShare to work on my iMac and I had manually put in a port and IP address that the computer would use or maybe only use. Anyway, in getting rid of that, it easily found Safari and everything is smooth.

I recently transferred my internet service to another state.I have not yet moved my imac, just my pc laptop. I cannot get my airport extreme wireless router to work. The green light stays lit when everything is connected but I can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • New Airport Extreme problems or DSL router problems

    Hi all,
List of what I have: Time Warner Cable (motorola modem) DSL, Latest Airport Extreme (with 2.4Ghz channel 5 & 5GHz channel 149) with the updated version 7.6.1, 2008 MBP4,1 with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now the problem, when I am on my MBP on the web internet slows to a stop, I will go to Systems Preferences, Network, (at this point Airport shows connected Full bars for the ant symble and a green light), then go to: Assist me... , I click Diagnostics, (On the left side) List: Airport (Green), Airport settings (green), Network Settings (green), ISP (either amber or red), Internet (either amber or red) and Server (amber or red).
So, basicly I keep looseing ISP, Internet and Server, now for the kicker, It does not happen every time i'm on my MBP or every day. But if it happens in the morning it will happen all day long.
This was happening with my old Airport Extreme so I up graded to the new one, worked without a problem for about a week, then started again reset & re installed several times changed channels (now back to default settings) I was hopeing that getting the new AE would take care of the problem so I coild start useing streaming TV but I'm not going to spend the money if I can't have the internet all the time.
By the way we just moved from one state to Maine never had this problem before, both area's are rural, & both are with TWC.
So the question is: do I have a TWC Modem problem or Airport Extreme Problem or is it just my MBP?
I have a Win7 desktop hard wired in, and my wife has an ipad2 but she is not home much and dosent seem to be around or on the web when this happens.
I am a serious NOVICE  so if you give advise please be very basic, Step by step!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
Not So Mad Max, But Getting there!!!!

P.S. I do have my AE set to be hidden with WPA2 set and a discoverable Guest also with WPA2 set!!
    Thanks

  • My airport extreme shows a green light, but won't connect to the internet.

I have an airport extreme, and it stopped working one day, so I reseted it and it's not connecting to the internet now.  It's showing a green light, however, it won't connect to the internet. I live in an apartment complex, so I don't have a cable modem. The router is directly connected to the wall via ethernet. I had the ports checked by connecting the ethernet cord directly to the computer, and the internet is working fine. I tried resetting the router, but it still doesn't connect.

Your problem is typical Yosemite network.. just reboot the Time Capsule.. no luck reboot the network.. do a restart in correct order.. modem.. wait 2min.. TC .. wait 2min.. clients.
No luck then do a full reset of the TC and setup in a way that Yosemite can cope with.
Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
Same thing applies to the Airport Extreme or the Express if used as router.. just replace TC in the instructions with AE.

  • My home network *works* but have I done it correctly?

    Hi,
Below is my set-up. It works, but I'm worried that I should have done it differently to get maximum performance with my hardware. I'd really appreciate someone glancing over it and letting me know whether it seems okay.
Cable internet connected wired to modem provided by ISP.
Ethernet cable to Airport Extreme (the new one)
Intel iMac Core 2 Duo (N enabled by disc included with Airport Extreme) connecting wirelessly:
    -- Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    -- Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Airport Express (just used for Airtunes, and nothing else)
-- Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Is the Airport express slowing down my network? I want N speeds (just because I can) and don't need to worry about connecting any other devices (apart from the Airport Express) to the network.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.
    Steve.

    I plan on getting an
iPhone anyway, when they are released in the UK, so I
guess I'm going to have to run a g compatible
    network...
Getting an iPhone is of course compulsory Steve
Check out some posts regarding running a hybrid g/n network using a spread of channels...
Might be fun (and not expensive)
