Airport Extreme problems--drops connection and can't change password

Hi, I am having multiple problems with my Airport Extreme (n) base station. All of these problems occur on all three of my machines. MacBook Pro 2007 model, MacBook Pro i7 2.66, and iMac 24".
1. Sometimes the airport connection works, but then drops off for hours at a time with no explanation, and then starts working again by itself. The green light is lit all the time. Also the airport bars on my menu bar are showing that it's connected. However when I go through diagnostics it says I don't have a connection and to restart the modem, which I do to no avail.
2. When it is connected, there is often strange download activity (shown via istats menu), even when no applications are open. It's around 200k. When I turn the airport off the downloading stops. This only happens via airport base station connection, not when connected via ethernet.
3. I have tried numerous times to reset my AE base station password via airport utility. I go through the process. It tells me the configuration changes were successful and then it restarts the base station. When I reconnect the airport connection, it still uses the old password. I cannot get it to actually accept the new password.
Does anyone have similar experiences? I am not sure what to do and have not seen any simiar threads in the forum.
Thanks for any help,
lula

Yes, I am pretty sure it isn't that. That modem and it's connection works fine, but it's on the other side of the house.
These various problems (connection dropping, mysterious download when no apps are on, and not being able to change password) all started about two months ago, before that I never had problems with the airport. I have had the same ADSL modem (provided by my phone/cable company) the whole time.
What possible problems do you think the provided modem could cause?
And why am I not be able to change my airport password? That part really puzzles me.
Do you think if I bought a new modem--one completely independent and not connected to a particular isp it would solve the problem. I am willing to try that, but I don't know if it will make a difference.

  • Airport extreme keeps dropping connection and its driving me crazy

Alright so I have an airport extreme, and I have been having these "dropping out" problems for a long time now. For about 20 seconds, the internet signal is at maximum strength, then for some reason just completely drops for a few seconds then comes back. So basically if I am doing anything like playing a game online or talking on aim it just drops out for a few seconds then comes back. It's driving me mental.
The airport is not far at all from my computer, and we do have 2.4ghz phones, but over at my other house, we have a linksis wireless setup, and my computer is much farther away and there are also 2.4ghz phones there, and it doesn't drop out at all.
I have tried hard resets, changing the airport channel it's on, downgrading to previous airport versions... I know it's not my computer because it does it with both our macs in the house.
If someone can help me fix this it would be very greatly appreciated.

SOMEONE FROM APPLE PLEASE HELP US!
Well I've got the same issues with an n (WDS Main), two extremes (1 WDS Relay and 1 WDS Remote) and 1 express (WDS Remote). The n keeps logging this (the MAC is of the WDS Relay extreme):
    Nov 02 20:27:14 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:11:24:9d:74:91 (reserved 2).
and the WDS Relay keeps logging this (the MAC is of the WDS Main n):
Nov 02 21:01:06 Severity:5 Deauthenticated with station 00:11:24:23:15:d4 (authentication invalidated).
This seems to have begun with a firmware update of the n (7.2.1) and now the n constantly goes from a green status icon in AirPort Utility to an orange one and reports a WDS Error about not finding any other WDS units. Then it switches back to green. At the same time all the base stations disappear from the AirPort Utility and then come back after turning the AirPort on and off on my powerbook menu bar. Cycling the AirPort from the munu bar also restores lost internet connectivity. The actual network connectivity via the WDS network seems to stay up because I have a VOIP box attached to the WDS Remote extreme and don't loose phone service. While I'd like to get the issues reported by the n and the extremes solved at this point I'd settle for finding a way to not loose network connectivity (not the actual AirPort connection) from my PowerBook every 4 or 5 minutes. The syslog on the PowerBook shows:

  • My airport will sporadically drop connection and cause my network to fall

My airport extreme will suddenly without warning drop connection and have the blinking yellow/orangeish light. Sometimes it only lasts for a few seconds other times it will last for a few minutes. I have looked at my cable modem and it is still working fine with all indicator lights up and blinking in sequence as they should be. Just wondering what is causing this? It has caused for a lot of problems as I have uninstalled and totally reset up my entire network, which has caused me to not be able to install my printer to be used over the network wirelessly. I am at my wits end and about 2 more hours away from just doing a time machine reset to a month ago when things were working optimally. Only thing is everythign that I have downloaded to my itunes will be lost.

No, my airport is over a year old, I have been using this one since May or April of last year. First time I have had any problems out of it. And I refuse to pay money to have an apple service tech tell me there is nothing that can be done.

  • Airport Extreme keeps dropping connection

    Hello
I have an Airport Extreme (4 years old) - never had any issues with connection or signal.  I am on Comcast, and have ATV, 2 iphones, iMac all wireless.  Many times I can see the wireless system, but it won't give me webpages.  Also, on my iMAC, it trys to get to Yahoo or Apple site and just spins (does not say connection lost).  Airport extreme is always solid green
If I disonnect the Airport extreme, and plug back in, goes, yellow, flashes and then solid green.  From here, internet works.  Any idea why this happens?  Been happening on and off for the past 2 months, maybe 1/week.
    Thanks

  • Airport Extreme Card wont connect to D-Link DIR-615 (wireless N router)

Hi, I got an old Mac G5 that has the airport extreme card in it and can't connect to the internet through with my D-Link DIR-615. I tried a couple options on a MAC but didn't work. I have a Laptop running Windows Vista and had no problem connecting. I'm using WPA for security and my password has 31 characters. Do you guys think That I have to change the length of my password to 26 or even less? Is there any guide that you guys may know that cuold help me on this issue?
    Thanks a lot.

    Password
    40-bit hex
    40-bit ASCII
    128-bit hex
    128-bit ASCII
    LEAP
This would be telling me that your G5's AirPort is NOT "seeing" the D-Link's wireless network as encrypted with WPA, but with WEP instead. This typically can be caused by either the D-Link's current configuration is incompatible with the AirPort card or that there is something amiss with the AirPort card itself.
BTW, My D-Link has WEP, WAP-Personal and WAP-Enterprise
Ok, we will want to stick with either WEP or WPA-Personal.
We now have two choices: 1) Continue to troubleshoot additional configuration changes to the D-Link to try to get WPA to work with your G5, or 2) Switch to the lower strength encryption: WEP.
Which would you prefer to try?

  • I lost my connection when I was using internet and when I want to reconnect to airport it give me connection timeout error, I changed my password on router but still doesn't work. How can i fix my problem?

    Hi,
I lost my airport connection when I was using internet and when I wanted to re-reconnect to airport it gave me connection timeout error, I changed my password on router but still doesn't work. How can i fix my problem?

    Hello there hastibahreini,
It sounds like you were using your Wi-Fi network from your Airport base station and the connection cut out. You have reset the password on the device but the issue persists. I would try the 3 resets outlined in the following article in order to help resolve the issue. If it persists, is the Wi-Fi connection issue happening on more than one device or computer?

  • None of the 3 iphones in the house will connect to my airport extreme, but my macbook and iMac will, no problem.  HELP!

HELP!  I have comcast using a Motorola Surfboard Modem, fairly new, 3 iPhones in the house - 2 4S, 1 4, an iMac, Macbook Pro and Airport Extreme.  The iMac and Macbook pro connects ot internet fine, but none of the iPhones will connect to the internet (though they do connect to the wifi singnal.  I've reset the AE, even to factory default but no luck....

I discovered the solution to the problem, hopefully it helps others with the same issue.Using the airport utility (sorry, i don't recall the procedure verbatim or have access to the utility right now for exact details) find where it lists settings for 2.4ghz and 5ghz, they are probably both set to "Automatic". Change the setting for 2.4ghz from automatic to one of the channel numbers, try a number 1 - 11. Update. You might have to disconnect and connect the wireless device from the network. It worked for me!

  • My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands, but the problem comes back.  Transmitter problem or interference?

My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  My hard-wired iMac still has internet capability.  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands back and forth, but the problem comes back.  How can I check if it is a transmitter problem or interference?

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
Make sure the guest wireless is off.
Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
You should see lists of wireless connection like..
Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

  • Connecting 2 Airport Extremes wirelessly....can it be done?

Connecting 2 Airport Extremes wirelessly....can it be done?
I have 2 Airport Extremes. I'm only using 1 of them right now connected to a cable modem. It works well. I can get a wireless signal in most of the house and even outside a bit. However there are upstairs bedrooms on the other side of the house that I don't get a very strong signal on. No "big" deal really but here is what I thought.......
Can I set up my 2nd Airport Extreme to wirelessly receive the signal from the 1st (main) Airport Extreme and place the 2nd Airport Extreme close to the bedrooms with weak reception? I was thinking that the 2nd AirPort Extreme could just pickup and boost my original signal.
Is this possible? I can't find it mentioned in my Airport Manual.
If so, what is the term for this? That way I can search for information on how to configure all of this. If you have any other ideas on how this might able to work please let me know.
    Thanks for your help

OK, you will need to make configuration changes to both of your Extremes.
For the main Extreme (the one connected to your modem now):
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab under the icons
Look on the wireless setup page and make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". This may be under the Options tab on the wireless page. If you have a dual band Extreme, you can only extend the main network, not the 'guest" network.
    Update to save settings
For the remote Extreme, temporarily locate it near your computer so that you can configure it:
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
On the wireless setup page, change the Wireless Mode to "Extend a wireless network"
You will select the name of wireless network created by your main Extreme. Enter the password if needed.
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
    Update to save settings
    That should do it.

  • Connect to internet via airport extreme via ethernet cable and no airport c

I just bought a MacBook with Airport Extreme, got it set up today and it works great, got online, etc. However, I have an iMac with no airport card. I can't figure out how to get both computers hooked up on the internet at the same time. The MacBook works only when the ethernet cable in in the LAN slot on the Extreme but won't work through the WAN slot. I have tried hooking up both ethernet cables into the Extreme, just the iMac, and nothing works. I don't need to connect wirelessly through the iMac so I don't want to buy an Airport card if I don't need one. I just don't want to plug and unplug the ethernet cable everytime I want to use the MacBook or the iMac. My modem from Verizon only has one ethernet slot. Any ideas?

You mean Airport Extreme Base station?
Here's what you need to do:
    1. Disconnect your Verizon Modem & Airport Extreme
    2. Connect the ethernet cable from the Verizon modem to the WAN of the AE
    3. Connect another ethernet cable from the LAN port of the AE to your iMac
    4. Turn on Verizon Modem
    5. Once all lights on the modem have turned on, turn on the Airport Extreme
    6. On your iMac click on Applications --> Utilities --> Airport Admin Utility
    7. Setup a Wireless network using this or the Airport Setup Assistant, located in the same Utility folder.
    8. After you have created the wireless network, connect to it on your macbook
If for some strange reason you still can't figure it out, refer to the product manual or check:

  • How come my iMac and MacBook connect to my AirPort Extreme but my iPhone and iPad 2 won't?

How come my iMac and MacBook connect to my AirPort Extreme but my iPhone and iPad 2 don't?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am asking if the DNS IP addresses, not the IP addresses assigned by the DHCP service, are the same. DNS is like the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Your ISP typically will provide them to you or you can elect to use those provided by another source, like OpenDNS.
DNS is the service that translates a website's URL to its actual IP address so that you can access it. I am just trying to rule out that the PC is not configured properly with the correct DNS IP information.
The other thing to check is if the PC is configured to use a Proxy service. By default, it would not be.
Finally, what is the make & model of the PC. More importantly, if the PC is using either a PCI or USB wireless adapter, what is its make & model?

I can connect to internet with my MBP through Airport Extreme, but my iOS devices can't. Please help.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

Have them perform a complete power recycle of their networking hardware. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Also, make sure that they perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort (as described in the tip) to be sure to return the AirPort back to its "out-of-th-box" configuration.
