Airport Extreme, PS3.

Hey, any of you guys know if I can use my Playstation 3 wirelessly with an Airport Extreme? I'm considering buying one.

Yes, it works well. I have my PS3 connected to the internet as well as my network wirelessly via an airport extreme connected to a cable modem. I just started using NullRiver's 'MediaLink' software which allows the PS3 to browse and stream my itunes and iphoto libraries from my G5, as well as movies, and although the PS3's implementation of 'browsing' is really tedious, it works well once you find the file you want.

  • Airport Extreme - PS3 - DNS Error

I've been using the Airport Extreme as my home network router for quite some time but now the PS3 seems to have issues with it. I've run the PS3 in wireless mode for a few weeks without a hassle but then I wanted to use its media capabilities and stream music and films from the shared disk, using a media server. This proved too much for the wireless setup as all media halted once or twice every minute to buffer. I realised I needed to stream heavy media over an Ethernet wire instead so I set that up but suddenly everything became a hassle.
    This is my setup:
    Router: Apple Airport Extreme
5 computers (one server and four workstations, all PC's)
    Sony Playstation 3 (slim)
DHCP doesn't seem to work for some odd reason so I assigned a fixed IP address instead. The PS3 now successfully acquires its IP address but it fails while communicating with the DNS service. So far I have tried this:
    1. Specify the router's IP address for primary DNS (secondary unassigned)
    2. Specifying my ISP's DNS servers as primary/seconday DNS
    3. Specifying two different free DNS servers ("OpenDNS" and another on 4.2.2.1/4.2.2.2)
    4. Rebooting broad band modem and router for each of the above experiments
Also, I have tried opening TCP ports 10070-10080 and UDP 10070 (I found that suggestion in some forum post somewhere) but I'm no Airport wizard so I might possibly have done that the wrong way.
None of the above has resolved the DNS problem and now I am out of ideas.
    Anyone?
    /Jonas

Ok, thanks for clarifying your network configuration. I assume that you have your iMac connected directly to the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet and you want to connect the PS3 wirelessly ... correct?
If so, then we need to double-check the settings for all three devices. Think of DNS as the Internet's version of the Yellow Pages. Without the correct DNS information, a network client will have difficulty locating things on the Internet. Typically, your ISP provides you with the DNS server information using DHCP. In this case your AEBS would need to be configured to be a DHCP client in order to receive this DNS information. In turn, the AEBS also is a DHCP server and will provide this to any network clients (wired or wireless) connected to it. In order for that to work, both your iMac & the PS3 would need to be configured as DHCP clients. Make sense so far?
Since your iMac is getting Internet access, it (most likely) is getting the proper information from the AEBS. I suggest that you note the IP settings on the iMac; you will want to compare these to what the PS3 is getting.
To review the IP settings on your iMac, you will use System Preferences. In order to give you the proper steps to do so, I will need to know what version of OS X you are running on it?

  • AirPort extreme , PS3 Xbox live

Ive recently got a macbook and love the look of the airport extreme however I'm not really going to be using the wireless capability much. I want to use the wired ports. it has 3 ethernets out if i send 1 to PS3 1 to Xbox and the other to a switch for my macbook and pc , and maybe more products in the future will this set up be okay?
ive heard lots of problems with airport and xbox live / ps3 but these seem mainly due to the wireless components not if i used a wired connection.
if im not going to be using it for the wireless capabilities that much nor the usb HDD because i intend to use a Network storage device for faster speeds is it worth getting or should i stick with a cheaper router.
basically i like the look of the software config tool for it but wondered how easy it is to port forward etc for games consoles compared to other products.

Hello frostybarney. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

    Yes.

It really wouldn't make much sense to get the AirPort, or any other wireless router, if you really don't intend to use this capability. I suggest a wired router, like the Linksys BEFSR81 for what you are looking for.

  • Airport Extreme, PS3 and Netflix connectivity issue.

Up until a few months ago my setup was working fine to stream Netflix over my PS3, now I am unable to stream netflix on my PS3 when connected to my Airport.  Before you jump to the conclusion that the PSN outage is the root cause of my current issues let me assure you that is not the case.
    1. I am connected via ethernet (not wirelessly, although that does not work either for the record).
    2. I have updated my PSN password and am able to connect and use other services (such as multiplayer games) successfully.
    3. I can use netflix on any of my other computers connected to the same Airport without issues (wired or wireless).
When I connect the PS3 directly to my modem everything works fine, netflix connects and I can play anything I could before.  As soon as I connect my Airport between my modem and my PS3 the ability to use netflix disappears.
I have attempted port forwarding (80 and 443).
I have NAT Port Mapping enabled.
I have tried setting the PS3 up with a static IP and enabled it as the default host (DMZ).
    I have tried connecting wirelessly.
I have tried changing the MTU on the PS3 to 1492 (a suggestion from another forum).
I have tried power cycling all the equipment.
I have even tried resetting my Airport to factory defaults, all with no luck.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?  I have seen a few other threads from last year dealing with the Xbox360 but nothing current.  This is driving me crazy as we have been without netflix now for months.  Any help or suggestion that I have not tried???

    Welcome to the discussions!
Is your Netgear a simple modem (it will have only one ethernet port) or is it a gateway (combination modem & router with 3-4 ethernet ports)?
If your Netgear is a gateway, as I suspect, have you configured the AirPort Extreme as a "bridge" so that it will function correctly on the network?
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet icon > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Might be a good idea to check your ethernet cable as well. It should connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Netgear gateway to the WAN (circle icon) port on the AirPort Extreme.

  • Setting up PS3 to work through Airport Extreme

I've checked various message boards and many seem to have this problem but I can't find a clear solution. I have a new PS3, it locations my Airport Extreme network, which uses a WEP password, but when I type in my password it won't accept it. I don't know how to convert my simple password to the ASCII or Hex password it seems to need, and I'm not sure how to reset my Airport so as to start all over. Has anyone else successfully configured their PS3 to Airport Extreme and have any advice for me?

Launch AirPort Utility, double-click on your AirPort Extreme in the left column, then pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Equivalent Network Password".

  • Airport extreme: my macbook, cannon wireless printer, ipad and iphone cannot connect to internet when Apple Tv and/or PS3 is connected

Please help!  I have an Airport Extreme (model A1143) as my router, and I have several devices connected to it wirelessly and wired.  I have my Macbook, Macbook Pro, iPad 1, iPhone 4S, HTC Thunderbolt, Cannon wireless printer, and Apple TV (gen 1) connected wirelessly.  I have my PS3, an external hard drive and DirecTV connected via ethernet cable (but sometimes my PS3 is also connected wirelessly).
I began to notice a few months back that my wireless printer had connection errors and could not print.  And I noticed soon after that, from time to time, the internet connection on my Macbook and iPad was extremely slow, to the point that I could not surf the web.  I tried several different printers before realizing that this problem was happening only when I had my PS3 turned on.  I tried both PS3 wirelessly and wired, but the problem persisted.  I figured it was a problem with the PS3, so I just made sure that PS3 is off when I need to use the wireless in the house.  But I recently bought an ATV (gen 1) and also noticed the same problem when it was connected to the Airport Extreme (wirelessly) - i.e., Ican't print, and my internet is super super slow on macbook, ipad, etc.
So, it must be that my Airport Extreme is the problem, not the PS3 or the ATV.  Is there anything I can do to fix this (i.e., some setting that has to be changed)?  Or do you think that my Extreme is just dying out on me and it's time for a replacement (I bought it about 5 years ago)?

This problem, for reasons unknown to me, has resolved itself on its own. After several attempts finally everything decided to work. How does stuff like this happen? Thank you.

  • Can i stream the content on my airport extreme to my PC, PS3 and iPad ?

I want to purchase either the Airport Extreme (and plug in a 1TB external hard drive) or the Time Capsule. I want to know if it is possible to share the media in either of the drives (movies of all formats avi flv wmv mp4 and songs etc) wirelessly on my PC, PS3 and iPad.
I basically just need an airport express because i need to extend my wireless range by plugging in an ethernet cable. But if i will be able to share the content in a hard drive wirelessly without much mess, then i'd go for the capsule or the extreme. I've googled around and found that its incredibly messy to stream non-mp4 videos on iPad, u need to copy the entire movie onto ipad to watch it and blah blah.
Can anyone tell answer me like u talk to a non-tech freak ? Thanks

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods available for copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.  Once you have successfully done that, you can safely choose the Erase and Sync option.

  • How to get nat type 1 with airport extreme and ps3?

I use airport extreme as my default router. I have my ps3 connected to a separate airport in a different room. I can only get nat type 2 and want to get nat type 1 as I can barely connect to any hosts online.

NAT type 1 is when you connect your PS3 directly to your modem with no router in between.  The problem with this is that there will be no way to share your internet connections with other devices.  NAT type 2 is where you have a router in between your modem and your PS3, and NAT type 3 is where you have some or all needed ports blocked which is where you would have issues.
NAT type 2 is a correct way for your PS3 to work, and your wireless connection strength may be the reason for connection issues.

  • I use my ps3 online gaming, is the airport extreme or the airport express be compatible with ps3? Is it going to be a better connection compair to other router? Which one is a better choice for me, airport express or airport extreme??

I bought linksys EA3500 router. Its still in the box and before I open it I want to learn more about the apple airport router, is the apple going to work with my online games with ps3? I have iPad, 2 iPhones, apple tv and Mac mini.  If the airport express or airport extreme is a lot better and will work for ps3 which one should I get?

Airport will work with PS3.  From what you've stated, the Extreme is more than you need.  Buy the Express.

  • Issues with Airport Extreme/Express/PS3 network

I have searched and searched and cannot find the answer to my problem. In my house I have an Airport Extreme, a Linksys switch, and an Airport Express all creating my wireless/ethernet network in the house. Since day one, my PS3 joined our network and I have been able to get online, no problems. Recently though I have decided to attempt to get the horribly difficult NAT type 2 with no success.
Right not I have the Extreme acting as the WDS main and the Express (which delivers perfect connection to the PS3) acting as a WDS remote in Bridge mode. The Extreme is sharing a public IP and I have a DHCP reservation for my PS3 (using the default 10.0.1.253 IP) along with all the PS3 necessary ports forwarded. I have also set up the Extreme to set my PS3 as the default NAT host.
My problem is that I get a "Conflicting DHCP Range" error. I also get a lot of warning messages every now and then saying "10.0.1.x is already in use by *MAC address* 10.0.1.1". I still can get on the internet with my computers and PS3 but I have noticed that signing onto PS network works very rarely.
I absolutely cannot make sense of this. I also don't have my NAT 2 so can anyone help me.

Is the PS3 connected to the express over WiFi or plugged into the ethernet port on the express or both?
You should not need forward ports and set the default NAT host. Just setting the default NAT host will forward all traffic that is not sent to another host to the PS3. I would recommend forwarding ports instead of using default host for security reasons.
You could also try setting static IP info in the PS3.

  • Can PS3 access NAS connected to an airport extreme n via wi-fi?

We have currently an airport extreme n with two HDD attached. 1 is back for desktop macs and the other is general storage and media storage. The extreme is the connection point for all devices in the household. This is due to none of the devices being in one spot or near the extreme which is located at optimum location to cover the home. Cabling is not an option at this point. Specifically our PS3 which is our TV tuner, blueRay/DVD player and media centre. Only issue is I can't directly access the media HDD attached to the extreme using the wi-fi. Otherwise this setup works reliably 24 hours a day. The HDD is the correct format and so is the content. I have read that it is due to apple not supporting UPNP (sorry if I got that wrong). Due to other issues I've decided to upgrade the setup to add a NAS, probably a 4 bay. Reasons are for raid backup of media files and further expansion and storage flexibility without disturbing the media. Any way I can find lots of choices of products that say they fit my criteria. The only thing I can't find out or confirm is if the PS3 will be able to access the NAS media content if it's connected to the extreme and accessed by the PS3 via the wi-fi connection.
    Cheers,.

I assume that you plan on connecting an Ethernet-ready NAS device to the Extreme. If so, then it should be accessible from the PS3 via either a wired or wireless connection to the base station.
UPnP would only be necessary for access through the base station's NAT firewall to/from the Internet.

  • PS3 can't see new Airport Extreme base station

I replaced my old airport extreme with the latest one, but now my PS3, which is on another floor, cannot see the base station, and the new base station has a lot less range than the old one. With my old one I could sit out in the back yard with my laptop, and the PS3 picked it up right away over our wireless network, but now, nothing. My laptop connects okay, just can't go very far. Nothing has changed except the base station itself. Please help.

Hello Uri. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
A few things I would suggest that you try to see if either or both help with the PS3's connectivity to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn):
o If currently enabled, disable the Guest Network.
o Use a separate Network Name for the 5 GHz radio. Make sure that the PS3 connects to the 2.4 GHz radio's wireless network.

  • ALWAYS have to reset my airport extreme to connect PS3?

Whenever I want to watch NetFlix or other streaming service on my PS3 I always have to reset my Airport Extreme.  Same with the MacBook and iPod in the house.  iPad and S4's connect flawlessly.  Why is that?  Makes me not want to watch a movie because have to do silly stuff like that.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hello there ronald,
It sounds like your Airport Extreme is not consistently working correctly for all your devices. I would start by performing a soft reset, then testing the issue again:
Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ
    Soft reset
Open AirPort Utility in Applications > Utilities.
Select AirPort Utility > Check for Updates...
Install the most recent firmware and version of AirPort Utility available for your Mac.
Connect the base station to power.
Push and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip for ten seconds.
Release the button. The base station will soft reset.
If that does not resolve the issue I would next perform a factory reset on the device, and test it again.
    Factory default reset
Disconnect the base station from its power source.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip, then plug the base station back in while continuing to hold the button for approximately 5 seconds until you see the three status lights glow.
Release the button. The base station will factory default reset.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • PS3 with Airport Extreme

    Help,
I have my PS3 working wirelessly with my Aiport Extreme. One problem though, Everytime i get online to play i keep getting connection interupted. Its like my signals go back and forth from full to low. Do not know what is going on? Can anyone help me?

    Dave,
You are right, it's not WEP it's WPA. I've played with this for hours last night and still can't figure it out. Tonight I'm going to try 2 things:
    1) Disable security just as a test (not a long term solution for me)
    2) Hook an airport express that will talk to my airport extreme and run a cable. I hate to spend another $70 but I know it will work and I get the added benefit of 802.11N which the PS3 doesn't support
I'll report back tonight. As I said, this is very odd as everything else in my house or anyone who comes over can easily connect.

  • PS3 Nat Type 3 - Airport Extreme Router

    Greetings internet people;
I am an Airport Extreme user (connected to a Motorola 2210-02 DSL modem via ethernet) - with a PS3 who is finding it incredibly frustrating to get my network to work with my PS3 in NAT 1/2 -(Modern Warfare 2 is difficult with variable lag/no party invites).
This is my current network layout:
    http://grab.by/ABS
    Modem information screen:
    http://grab.by/ACb
Our ISP is Bellsouth (AT&T) and the modem is currently set to PPoE. I think I set up port forwarding to a static IP for the PS3, but still, nothing I've done/read online has worked, or I haven't done it right.
(I tried plugging the PS3 directly to the modem and it still remains in NAT Type 3.)
I need the network to stay in tact - so that wireless works etc. I could set up the switch between the modem, but I'm still not sure if that'd do it. ----
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I want to figure this out so I can actually play my PS3 online :<
    Peter

I have the same Motorola model 2210, but the screen shots in the original post were different, so you may have to search a bit for things.
The 2210 provides NAT service, and the only way to hook it up to the AEBS to Connect Using "Ethernet" will result in the double NAT because the AEBS is also furnishing NAT services.
You will need to use the web interface for your modem and you will probably need to plug it into your computer to configure it. The setup page(s) on my model will display when you enter 192.168.1.254 into your browser. Check your documentation to see if you will use the name address or a different address.
When you log into the modem, look for an Advanced setting, PPP Location, or similar. You need to change the PPP setting from the current "On the Modem" to "On the computer or router". If there is a setting for "Bridge Mode", you can use this as well. Update to save changes on your modem and it will restart.
Important...you may not be able to get back into the modem configuration again unless you reset the modem by holding in the reset button for approx 10 seconds. Then you will be able to reconfigure the modem if you need to do so.
Reconnect the modem to the AEBS and open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup. If AirPort Utility does not "see" the AEBS, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS and try again.
After you click Manual Setup, click the Internet icon at the top of the setup pane and look for the Connect Using setting. You need to change this to PPPoE. Then enter your user name (probably your email address with the ISP) and password. Important....leave the Service Name area completely blank. Do not enter anything here.
Click Update and the AEBS should restart with a green light in about 20 seconds. You have now eliminated the double NAT between the modem and AEBS. Sorry, I can't help with details on the game console, so there may be some additional configuration needed for that device.
Please post back on your progress.
