AIrport Extreme (RE) Set up

Hello all,
Thanks for taking the time to read this post.
I had been having problems with Safari and Mail. (Incidentally/ Coincidentally) I began noticing this shortly after a power outage in my neighborhood. Safari ran insufficiently even though the router was providing regular speeds. It would be slow to load if it loaded at all. In mail i would receive error messages as well as port messages. This affect my desktop as well as my old laptop.
II read as many discussions about this as I could tried many opinions, to no avail. As with many things, the more variables introduced , the more variables of failure/ additional confusion the problem can look like.
I though i was in over my head scheduled an appointment w/ the mac store only to be ushered within 2 minutes, sent home to reset the computer.( i opted to attempt this on my laptop) It did not work. I phoned in for an call bak appointment via apple. Upon receiving the call the only options given were to reboot the entire system. Since this would be a really big setback in time, i opted to try something different.
It is my airport express. Does anyone know why it would run differently?
I tried to do an archived restart(as suggested by apple) to no avail.
Currently i am working off the ethernet connection.
Any suggestions?

when this happens (power difficulties) and the phenomenon occurs then user should power off modem first then the network. Bring up the modem first then the network.

Yes. The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) can perform as either a main, relay, or remote base station in a WDS.

  • I have FIOS and the latest version of the Airport Extreme Basestation set up in bridge mode.

OK need some technical answers I have FIOS and am forced to use their Router. I have WiFi turned off on the FIOS router and my New version Airport Exteme Basestation set up in Bridge Mode. I have CAD 5 running to all my Mac computers and a CAD 5 up to the second floor. I have an older version Airport Extreme Basestation that I would like to connect to the CAD 5 cable on the second floor where the WiFi signal is weak as the main Airport is in the basement. How would I connect the second Airport to the Airport that is in Bridge Mode?  Will this setup mess up my signal strength on either CAD 5 or WiFi? I will also have one Macbook Pro plugged into the upstairs Airport. This is mainly for the WiFi for my iPad and iPhone. Details will help. Thanks.

How would I connect the second Airport to the Airport that is in Bridge Mode?
Connect from a LAN <-> port on the Bridge Mode AirPort to the WAN "O" port on the second floor AirPort and then use AirPort Utility on a Mac or iPad to set things up.
Will this setup mess up my signal strength on either CAD 5 or WiFi?
Nothing will be messed up, and you will have a much stronger WiFi signal upstairs.
If you need more details on setup.....we need to know.....
    1) What model number of AirPort Extreme will be upstairs.  The model number is usually embedded in the foam base on the bottom of the device. Starts with an "A" followed by four numbers. Example.....A1143.
    2) What operating system you are using on your Mac, or whether you want to use the iPad for the setup...assuming that the upstairs AirPort is compatible.

  • Change Airport Extreme locale setting (USA vs. Worldwide)

    Hi all,
I am very confused about the locale setting of the Airport Extreme card, which is shown in the system profiler:
    AirPort Card:
    AirPort Card Information:
    Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
I know that there are restrictions for the allowed frequency bands (channels) in different countries:
    • Channels 1–11 approved for use in in USA, Canada
    • Channels 1–14 approved for use in Japan
    • Channels 1–13 approved for use in other countries
I live in Germany and want to use channel 13 for various reasons.
Now I bought a extreme card on ebay which is (as I was told afterwards) imported from USA.
Someone told me, that this cards cannot handle the channels 12 and 13.
Is this true? Or does it depend on the my PowerBook, which was bought in Germany or even on the language setting, which is - of cause - german.
I also read somewhere that it can be changed by loading a different firmware, which you could only do with a - let's say - not apple approved software tool (which I don't have anyway).
By now I have read so many different opinions and suggestions, that I don't know left from right anymore.
Can someone please tell me some real facts, please.
    Thanks.

FilterPunk, Welcome to the discussion area!
I have spent years helping in this discussion area and have never seen any information on the possibility of changing a US card to a European card.
It may be possible but I have never seen information on it nor anyone reporting that they had done it.

  • How/where do I find the password/passphrase on airport extreme to set up printer?

I am trying to set up my printer, and I have the Airport Extreme router. It asks for a password/pass phrase and states that it should be ont he bottom of the router. I have tried every number and letter that is on the bottom of the router and still I can't get the printer set up. It keeps stating that I have the wrong WPA password. Anyone know where I can find this WPA password?

It's the same one you use when connecting to your wireless network with a computer, and no, it's not printed anywhere on the Extreme.
If you are using a Mac that you use with that Extreme, I have a way to determine it.
If not, you will need to reconfigure your Extreme with a WPA password you remember.
Let me know which procedure you would like.

  • I just bought a mac mini...can i just connect an ethernet cable to the airport extreme and set up the mini through an existing mac

I just took the mini out of the box and hooked it up to the airport extreme through a direct ethernet cable between the two.  Can i find the mini and set it up through an existing mac that is also hard wired to the network?  Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response.. I don't have a monitor nor a wireless keyboard to use on the mac mini...apple salesguy at bb tells me that I can hook up the mini to the ethernet port of my airport extreme and find the mini using finder on my 27 inch mac.
that my regular mac would see everything on the mini and that i can proceed to set everything on the mini through my regular mac...
I am trying to purchase the server software from the app store and turn the mini into a server..
that is what i am attempting to do.

  • USB printer, Airport Extreme, can set up printer but it won't print

I have an Epson 6600 connected to the AEX via USB. I can see the printer from my Macs and add it just fine but when I send something to it nothing happens. No activity light, no printing or communication error, nothing. Its like the file just goes to alphabet heaven. I've deleted and added the printer several times with no luck. If I connect directly to the printer everything prints fine. Anyone else having this issue? The AEX is using the latest firmware.

  • How do I set up an Airport Extreme as a router?

I need to make sure my Airport Extreme is set up as a router and NOT a bridge. I cannot find anything about this on Apple's manuals, the forums nor the interwebs in general. Has someone done this before?
Currently I have the Airport Extreme working as a WiFi seemelessly. I have two devices connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet ports but only one is communicating. The other (a solar microconverter) is not communicating with the router. Cables work, I have unplugged and replugged everything, YES, everthing! Both devices have little green lights lit up next to the port they are plugged into.
Can anyone out there just tell me how I can either make sure it is set up as a router or how to change the Airport Extreme to work as a router.
I'm pretty desperate at this point.
    TIA

    In AirPort Utility 5.6:
In AirPort Utility 6 click on your device.
The device shouldn't be in bridge mode if you want it to act as a router.

  • Setting up new ipad 2. Won't accept my PW for my Airport Extreme (Wi Fi network?)  Where is the PW for my WiFi? I am stymied. Can I set up through My MacBook Pro, which IS connected to my WiFi network?

Setting up new ipad 2. Won't accept my PW for my Airport Extreme (Wi Fi network?)  Where is the PW for my Wi Fi? I am stymied. Can I set up through my MacBook Pro, which IS connected to my WiFi network?

If you could provide the make and model number of the modem that the AirPort Extreme will be connecting to, we can likely tell you a bit more about what to expect in the way of getting the AirPort set up and working.
Unfortunately, "plug and play" does not apply here. You will need to set up and configure the AirPort Extreme using your iPad or iMac to name the AirPort as a device, assign a device password, name the wireless network, assign a device password and a few other things.
Once the AirPort Extreme is set up, you can connect the PC to one of the LAN <--> ports on the AirPort Extreme using an Etherent cable.
The iPad and iMac will connect to the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme provides.

  • Why is Airport Extreme set to N only on 5ghz only connecting at 130 mbit/s

    Hi guys
Simply question, why is my MBP only reportedly (according to the Network Utilty) connecting my Airport Extreme at 130 mbit/s
The Airport Extreme is set to 'N' only at 5ghz. i thought 130mbit/s was for N at 2.5ghz.
Ive checked all the options on the Airport Extreme and there is nothing else to change - it says its operating at 5ghz. Im only a metre or two away (about 6 foot) why can't i active the full connection speed?
    Thanks

Regardless its a network that doesn't transmit far enough to leave my front door - so legalities are not really something im bothered about. If i invited the police round and showed them the network they wouldn't even know what i was going on about.
Its one of those stupid dated UK formalities like being able to use one of those FM transmitters was illegal in the UK for about 3 years - until the government saw how many were being sold on ebay and realised how much VAT they were missing out on...that pathetic law quickly changed.
Anyway the basestation now thinks im in Ireland, I have ticked to use wide band channels, but it still reports at connecting at 130mbp/s. Is this now a problem with the Macbook end?

  • Why can't I set up my AirPort Extreme as a wireless jumper from my Cable internet router ?

Why can't I set up my AirPort Extreme as a wireless jumper from my Cable internet router ?

If it "joined" my network is it extending the coverage of my wifi network ?
Please review my previous answer in the post above......
But, the Express does not  "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal when it joins a network.  In other words, wireless devices cannot connect to the AirPort Express the way that you have it set up.
If so can my Airport Extreme be set up to "join" my network and also extend the coverage of my network ?
Again, please review my previous answer in the first reply above......
The AirPort Extreme does not have this type of capability.
If you have both an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express.....my suggestion....again, found above in a previous post.....
It takes a minimum of two Apple routers to extend a signal using wireless.
You could do this by connecting the AirPort Extreme to your cable router using a permanently installed Ethernet cable and then configuring the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network".
Then add an AirPort Express in a location where it can pick up a strong wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme and configure the Express to "extend a wireless network".
You would not use the wireless on your cable router at all, unless you wanted to reserve that network for guests or something similar.

  • Setting base IP address of Airport Extreme?!

I've recently replaced my Linksys hub with an Airport Extreme and everything is going well except for a problem I'm having designating a non-default IP address. I use a work PC wirelessly connected to my Airport Extreme and once connected VPN into my company's network. I use the Cisco VPN client which when configured allows me to also see my local network for things like network printing, however, the printer HAS TO BE LOCATED AT 192.168.249.10. In it's default config, the Airport Extreme is set to a base IP address of 192.168.249.1 and while I found that I can change it using the Airport Utility, doing so kills the connection with my cable modem so my local clients get IP addresses from the router, but the router has no connection to my ISP. I'm guessing this is due to having to disable DHCP (presumably on the back cable connection) if you want to set your own, user-defined IP address.
Anyone have any experience with anything like this? I've checked lots of websites and blogs, but have never found an answer and I have to say emailing docs from my PC to my Mac in order to print them is getting really old!
Any thoughts or suggestions is appreciated.
BTW - the company I work for has a pilot program underway that may ultimately have all our sales groups (~1K) switching over to Macs!

Ok, there are two different settings that involve DHCP, one being the public IP address that is assigned to the AirPort and the other being the IP addresses that are assigned to the computers on the private network.
Before doing the following, I would hard reset the AirPort Extreme by holding the reset button on the back for 5-10 seconds, just so we can get a default onfiguration.
If you run AirPort Utility, go to Manual Setup, and click on Internet your Connection Sharing at the bottom should be listed as Share a Public IP Address. This enables your AirPort to be the gateway and to receive a public IP address from your cable provider. This should really already be enabled since you did a hard reset.
Now test to make sure you have an internet connection. If not, then you need to reset your cable modem. If after resetting your cable modem you still can't get internet connection then you need to call your cable provider and have then do whatever they need to do to get you a new IP address.
Now that you have a working internet connection you need to setup your private network. Run AirPort Utility, click on Manual Setup, and go to the Internet tab again. Write down the DNS servers you see listed. For Configure IPv4, you need to change the setting from Using DHCP to Manually. Enter the IP address as 192.168.249.10, the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0, the router address as 192.168.249.10, and then use the DNS Servers you just wrote down.
Now click on the DHCP tab next to the Internet Connection tab and select 192.168.249.100 as your beginning DHCP address. Ending address could be something like 192.168.249.200. Update your AirPort and then see if things are working correctly.

  • Dual band set up with Airport Extreme "2nd Generation"?

I'm running an Airport Extreme as my Wi-Fi router. When I open Airport Utility it finds the Airport Extreme and calls it "Airport Extreme 802.11n 2nd Generation." I'd like to run this in dual band, since I have some older Airport Expresses that can't go 5Ghz. Is this possible with this unit? I can't find this unit on the Apple site, to get specs. If I can't run it in dual band mode, I end up changing the config every time I want to stream music to my older Airport Expresses. I get much faster Internet performance on my MacBook Pro when the Airport Extreme is set to 5Ghz.
Can someone list out for me the settings that I should use, to at least get the best performance out of this router, and my Airport Expresses. I have the Expresses set to "join a network" so they don't slow things down. Maybe that's not the right settings? My Apple TV, 2 Airport Expresses, iPad, iPhone, MacBook Pro and wife's PC need to share this/these network(s). Any suggestions? Please be specific. Thanks.

When I open Airport Utility it finds the Airport Extreme and calls it "Airport Extreme 802.11n 2nd Generation.
This version is not a simultaneous dual band router.  You can run a 5 GHz network...or...a 2.4 GHz network, but not both at the same time. A simultaneous dual band version....3rd Generation AirPorts and higher....would allow the wireless router to provide both types of signals at the same time.
I get much faster Internet performance on my MacBook Pro when the Airport Extreme is set to 5Ghz.
That would be expected, since a good 5 GHz wireless connection will run...on average.....at 2-3 times the speed of a 2.4 GHz connection.
I have the Expresses set to "join a network" so they don't slow things down. Maybe that's not the right settings?
If these are older "b/g" versions, that is all that you can do.  Newer "n" versions of the Express could be configured to "extend" the network, providing more wireless coverage while running at higher "n" speeds.
Can someone list out for me the settings that I should use, to at least get the best performance out of this router
You already know that 5 GHz provides the 'best" performance for your Mac, but if you have older AirPort Express devices, they cannot connect at 5 GHz.  Neither can an iPhone or iPod, and probably the PC as well.
So, the best compromise on your current Extreme would be to use the default settings for 2.4 GHz, which would provide an 802.11 "b", "g" and "n" wireless signal....compatible with all of your devices. You may already be doing this.
If you decide to purchase a newer version of the AirPort Extreme, then you will have the benefit of being able to run both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks simultaneously....so everything will connect to the respective 'best" signal.
Then the current AirPort Exteme that you have now could be reconfigured to "extend" the network if you need more wireless coverage in another area. But...another compromise coming.....it can only "extend" one band...either 2.4 GH or 5 GHz, but not both.
Unfortunately, you would need another simultaneous dual band AirPort to be able to "extend" both bands.

  • How to connect a ADSL router to AirPort Extreme?

    Hallo,
my local internet service provider forces all costumers to use their modem/router to connect to the Internet using a DSL connection.
I have one external public IP (v4) and the router has an editable IP for the LAN set to 192.168.1.1 .
The ISP router can act as DHCP server and NAT; I can disable the DHCP.
What I would like to do is connect it to the Airport Extreme WAN port and give all the control to the Airport extreme: I want to use his DHCP server, NAT, port forwarding etc.
My problem is that I am able to have Internet connection only if the ISP router has DHCP control and Airport Extreme is set to Bridge mode.
In this configuration, in the Airport Internet configuration panel, the connection is set to Ethernet, IPv4 is using DHCP, Airport IP is 192.168.1.133 and the ISP router has 192.168.1.1 . I also have the DNS IPs set to the ones suggested by the ISP and Bridge mode.
In this way it works: all computers can share Internet connection.
What I am trying to do is:
    - disable DHCP in the ISP router;
    - in the Airport extreme Internet panel I choose to manually setup IPv4 and I type the same vales it is getting when set to DHCP mode: 192.168.1.133 for the Base and 192.168.1.1 for the router using the ISP dns and I select Share pubblic IP. In the DHCP panel I choose 10.0.1 class.
I save changes and... I got that Internet is no working anymore and I cannot access the ISP router control panel.
Does anybody have suggestion about things to try to not use ISP router DHCP or configuration changes I could try?
Thanks in advance for any help about it!

    Thanks for the reply,
at the end it seems that my airport extreme works too BUT with an error message saying "double NAT" and the front led turned to yellow. I have ignored such error because things seems to work and so the led color goes to green.
What I had to do here is:
    - set previous router to IP 192.168.1.1
    - turn off DHCP on my previous router;
    - leave on the NAPT (NAT) service on previous router and set it with start and stop address to the same IP I am using for the Airport Extreme (192.168.1.100);
    - open all ports and services on previous router by faking the mac address of the Computer's NIC I was using to configure router. I say faking because previous router wants to know for which computer the ports have to be open, so I had to use the same mac address of the Airport extreme. I cannot type it, previous router will get it automatically when configuring it.
    - on the Airport Extreme, Internet side, I had to manually configure Internet options using Ethernet mode: I set the IP 192.168.1.100 for the Airport base. Then I have enabled DHCP on class 10.0.1.x .
Airport extreme seems to work with all features now, I hope that "double NAT" warning will not create any trouble. Anybody knows about that?

  • PROBLEM with new Airport Extreme

i just bought the new airport extreme and what was supposed to be a simple setup process has taken longer than 10 hours!
    please help!
    i have 3 computers.
2 are macs, they will be using wireless. 1 is a PC, which will be wired to the airport extreme.
the airport extreme is connected to a VOIP router, which is then connected to the DSL router.
i have always used my old airport extreme without issues, but because i want to connect the PC as well, i must ditch the airport express in favour for one with LAN ports. hence, the troublesome airport extreme.
    it doesn't work.
none of my computers can recognize the new network. (even though i've established one, with passwords and everything)
the router flashes amber - internet works, but not wireless.
the router periodically flashes green - ironically, nothing works then!!!!
    please help!!!
    EDIT: DIAGRAM
    1. WHEN IT WORKED:
INTERNET --> PROVIDER ROUTER --> VOIP ROUTER --> AIRPORT EXPRESS --> MAC 1, MAC 2 (WIRELESS)
    2. WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK:
INTERNET --> PROVIDER ROUTER --> VOIP ROUTER --> AIRPORT EXTREME --> MAC 1, MAC 2 (WIRELESS), PC (WIRED)

It appears to me that you may possibly have sever conflict issues as well as maybe not having the Network confiqured correctly.
I have a 3 story OLD VICTORIAN and I am using the Old Airport Extreme Base and have expierianced NO PROBLEMS at all.
If I may suggest a different approach.
    Try to start from scratch.
    SHUT EVERYTHING OFF.
Run an ethernet cable from your Internet Service Providers MODEM to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme Base
Set it up DHCP and you want the Airport to distribute IP's
use the Airport setup assistant and Airport Admin Utility.
Using 2 Routers in the mix unless you have ony one the main to distribute the IP's, IF you have 2 Routers and they are both set up to distribute the IP's there is your problem.
The New Airport Extreme Base is far better then the older model and you shouldn't need another router in the mix at all to get the coverage of your entire house.
Take the Netgear clear out and use the Airport Extreme and the Expresses as you had them before. There is a very good possibility that you will need to do evrything one at a time and step by step.
Do not just plug everything in, and turn everything on and expect it to work. Do everthing step by step with all security disabled to begin with.
Be sure when you do your system reset that you start by powering up the MODEM 1st and wait for it to acquire the signal before you power up the Airport Extreme and again you must wait for it to acquire the signal. You can use the LAN Ports for anyyhing you need HARDWIRED. If you don't wait and do things in the proper order you will have problems, I can't stress enough that it must be done in the proper sequence. Have a look at the Paperwork of either the Netgear's Yellow Phamplet or the Booklet that came with the Extreme to bear out what I explained on the sequence.
