On one of the 2wire config screens last night, it showed my various devices and next to each one said "IP" of 108.54.... so it was showing the public IP of each one, versus say "192.168.1.160".
Ok, that is weird. Is each IP different and how many devices do you have getting public IP's.. there should only be one available and the only device getting it should be the extreme.
If you only need a bridged modem. go out and buy a cheap single port modem. (I presume this is DSL service. Sorry I am not in US, so what is obvious to you may need spelling out).
We often use the cheapest TP-Link modem here.. TD-8817 which are like $25 for bridged modem.. works really well.
I think also you will find as far as pc is concerned the 2wire is actually the better router. Apple decided to use NAT-PMP on their routers instead of near universal upnp used by all windows networking and just about everything else. That makes opening ports that much harder on the Extreme for games etc.
With the new version utility you can turn on guest network even with the Extreme in bridge.. and what you miss in terms of dhcp is not that great.
If you want to get it working, let me suggest bridging the extreme for the moment. I am sure you will find no issues with Remote Desktop direct through the 2wire, as you probably used it in the past that way.

  • How do I keep my Airport Extreme from logging into other networks?

How can I tell my network to always log into our network and ignore the other signals it finds?
In older MacOS's you could tell WiFi to only use trusted networks. My problem is that in my neighborhood there are lots of WiFi users and my airport network is always trying to use one of them (even though the signal strength is the same). The most annoying is Comcast, which seems to show up the most. I have Comcast for TV etc., but have the WiFi feature disabled on the modem. I want more control. Yesterday it got on one of my neighbors that isn't even secure?

    1. Have you ticked to "Ask to join new networks" ??
    2. Have you deleted all the other possible wireless networks from your listing.
The network which should be the first in the list will be the one that is connected first. But we find it is best to empty the list.
Maybe also check to require admin authorisation to change networks.
Other than those things nothing else is offered..
I have many wireless networks here and I have not seen the issue even on Mavericks.. but if any OS is going to give you grief Mavericks is the one.

  • Can't make Airport Extreme router work with non-Apple device

I am trying to help a friend who has a PC (Windows 7) that has a wired Ethernet connection to his girlfriend's Airport Extreme router.  He wants his Internet-capable Blu-Ray player and her IPad to wirelessly access the Internet via the Aiport Extreme router, with both the Blu-Ray player and the IPad's Internet access protected by WPA-2 encryption (both devices are capable of WPA-2).  How do I do this?
Here are the problems we've run into:
    1)  The Airport Utility for Windows (5.6.1) has been installed on the P.C., and we've used it to update the firmware on the Airport Extreme router.  However, after we followed the Aiport Utility instructions to set up the network, all the router wanted to do was look for an Apple device.  His girlfriend and her IPad are out-of-town right now, so the only device within range was the Blu-Ray player, and the router did not see it.  Not only that, but almost all the menu options on the Airport Utility were "greyed out" (unusable), except for "Configuration."  I am very troubled by the fact that the Airport Extreme router seems to want to look only for Apple devices.
    2)  In order to get Internet access for his Blu-Ray player for the time being, my friend pushed the "reset" button on the Airport Extreme router, and he can now use his Blu-Ray player for Netflix and other Internet streaming options.  However, the Blu-Ray's wireless Internet access is an unencrypted connection, and the Airport Extreme router is displaying a flashing amber light -- not a good situation.
    3) Although I know his girlfriend could access the router via her IPad when she returns, she is French-Canadian, and her IPad operates in French.  I happen to know some French, but I have enough trouble trying to understand  wireless networking terminology in English without having to try to figure out the equivalent terms in French.  Thankfully, the Airport Utility for Windows on his P.C. is in English, so that's what we've got to use to solve this problem.
I have profound respect for Apple products, but I'm a Windows/Linkysis router guy, so that's why I'm stumped.  Can anybody out there help me?

Which model of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) do they have? What is the version of firmware that you updated it to?
By default, the AEBS will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name (or SSID) of something like Apple Network NNNNNN. This would be similar to a Linksys when first powered-up.

  • Using an Airport Extreme router with PC.

I was told that I could use the Apple Airport Extreme router with my PC - but I can't seem to figure it out.  Any suggestions to get started?

Sorry to be so ignorant when it comes to this type of stuff.  I have a laptop (Dell) and a home computer (PC).  The Apple man told me all I had to do with my previous router was unplug it and plug in the Extreme and it would walk me through the steps.  It didn't.  I think I may have changed some settings on the PC.  Now I can't even get the previous router to work so I'm hardwired in on my laptop to even get here.
Do I need to hardwire in the PC, download the above utility, then try to hook up the Extreme router?  How do I make it "secure" or locked so no one else can use it other than ones with the key code?
Thanks so much for the above information.  Going to try it now.

  • Using time machine backup on disk connected to airport extreme router?

So I've read a number of articles about using an external hard drive connected to the airport extreme base station as a time machine backup. The thing is that I'm writing this in august 09, most of the articles (which say the feature is officially unsupported) date about a year and a half ago. I'm wondering if there have been any developments since then.

I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

  • I want to connect a Windows PC to an existing Airport Extreme router via ethernet connection. Is there any utility required or can I just plug into the router?

I want to connect a Windows PC to an existing Airport Extreme router via ethernet connection. Is there any utility required or can I just plug into the router? The router is already set up and working with existing iMacs.

thanks for the info. I found apple utilty software on this windows 7  PC but I guess it is not required for sharing  internet on exisiting apple extreme. Am I correct that I can remove this apple software?

  • Seeking a driver for my printer to run through my Airport Extreme router

Im trying to find a driver for my Lexmark X1100 series printer which would allow me to run the printer through the usb port of my Airport Extreme router. The printer works when plugged directly into the usb port of the computer. I have a Windows 7 Asus computer. Can anyone help me please. I am using the Bonjour printer wizard to set up the router for the printer. Thanks

There is no driver that will allow that, as this printer only works by connecting it to a host computer, not to a network. No printer driver or software is ever installed to the AirPort Extreme for any printer. Printer drivers and print/scan/fax software (if any) must be installed separately to each computer that will be using a printer.

  • Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless won't connect to my new Airport Extreme router

I have owned my Officejet 8000 Wireless printer for about a year and had no problems with it.  However, my old wireless router wasn't fully Mac compatible so I couldn't secure it with a password.  I now need a secure network, so I bought an Apple Airport Extreme router in December.
I installed the router last night and it is working fine on my iMac, my PC laptop and my iPhone.
However, tonight I am trying to set up the Officejet Pro 8000 with no luck.  I've searched the posts here for 3 hours and am not finding the help I need.  Based on the other posts I've read, I am describing my situation below.
I am trying to set up the printer from my Intel iMac with Mac OS 10.6.4
I am trying to set up the printer with the HP Setup assistant that I just installed from the printer software.
On the first wizard screen it tells me that my device is not configured (I agree)
Then I ask it to configure for a wireless network.
When I get to the Network Selection page, both my network AND my guest network (which I let my neighbor use) are shown on the list with full signal strength.
When I click my network and then continue, the HP setup wizard freezes, and I have to force-quit it.
When I click my guest network and then continue, I get the message that my network is not within the reach.  (FYI, the printer is 10 feet from the router.)
I have tried powering on/off the printer, router, and computer at all different stages of the process with no luck.
    For my Airport:
My radio mode is set to the most compatible choice
MAC access control is not enabled
    Everything is WPA2 security
"Use wide channels" and "Create a closed network" are UN-checked
The channel is set to 11
I am happy to try the "Add network client" thing I saw on other posts, but I don't think I have a printer front panel where I can start the "WPS" (don't know what that is) process.   If I do, it's not obvious and not in the HP manual.
My ISP is Comcast (cable internet).
I would really, really appreciate some help!  Please let me know what information I forgot to include and I will be happy to provide it.
    Thank you!
    This question was solved.

First, you should be at 10.6.6, so please do Software Update (Apple menu) over and over until there are no more updates.
From where did you get the HP software for your printer? Was it labeled as being compatible with 10.6?
Finally, you will need to reset the printer so, let's do that:
Press and hold the Power button, press Network button, (on some models, press the Wireless button ), two times, press the
press the Cancel button three times, and release the Power button.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Trying to get my air video app and my airport extreme router to work.

Hi there. I am getting really frustrated and desperate. I just purchased the app "air video" on my iPad. Installed the software on my mac. Works awesome when I'm on MY WIRELESS NETWORK. I didn't think it would be an issue once I left the house and tried to go on someone else's network to connect, but it just won't work. It keeps giving me the error "host not reachable". I tried opening up the air video troubleshooting info and tried everything but nothing seems to work. I tried under the "remote" tab in the air video server preferences. I clicked both "enable access from Internet" and the "auto map port" options. In the box below I just see the word status and the spinning wheel along with "looking for UPnP or NAT-PMP compatible devices" but the wheel has been spinning for about 15 mins. It doesnt appear to be finding anything.
I've also clicked off the "auto map port" to see if that would do anything. I got the pin and tried that. Still nothing. I tried to look for some information on port forwarding for my airport extreme but everything I'm googleing seems to be years out of date.
I am currently on Mac snow leopard 10.6.3 I believe. Everything is latest version. Using comcast modem with apple airport extreme router. Latest version of Air video app and software. On iOS 4.3.1.
Anyone that can try to help me out, I would be eternally grateful.
    Thank you so much

  • Why do I have to turn on my wi-fi manually every time I log into my computer? Can't it just log in when I do?

Why do I have to turn on my wi-fi manually every time I log into my computer? Can't it just log in when I do?

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    8. Reset the System Management Controller.
    9. Reset the PRAM.
    10. Reinstall OS X.

  • Ethernet Connection Randomly Dropping w/ AirPort Extreme Router

My wired ethernet connection drops sometimes randomly, but I think it tends to do it more if I'm in an audio chat with someone on iChat (not sure). Here is my setup:
FiOS ISP (always been reliable in the past) -> AirPort Extreme (router) -> Cisco gig-e switch (reliable) -> 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard (no I do not use wifi) (my computer) -> Internet sharing to my brother's computer via ethernet port 2 (set up after the new router was installed, but problem happened without it)
It seemed to start doing this once I switched the router to AirPort Extreme. We were using the one Verizon gave us, a junky Actiontec router that was messing with our DNS and port forwardings but wasn't dropping my computer's connection randomly.
I have it set to use DHCP. When it drops, other things have connection, just not my computer. It drops for about 30 seconds then comes up. I've already tried rebooting the router and the switch. I suspect that something is funny with the DHCP because I rarely get the message that my computer's name has already been taken (by itself!), which has always happened even with the old router. Nothing is stealing my address. Anything else I should try?

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Should Airport Extreme router be routinely powered down?

I know the design helps it cool...but when done on the system at day's end, is it a good idea to power the airport extreme router down?  That would mean pulling out the power cord.

While waiting for operations to take, I had a few moments to ask engineers some basic questions.  For one, I teach computer graphic arts, and one of my issues is that other teachers use the computer labs as well and its difficult to train people to shut machines down say for the weekend.  I asked the engineer...what about shutting down computers?  Critical, or no?
His advice was that computers should be shut down at least once every three days to rest over night.  Definitely over the weekend when everyone is gone.
Also...thanks on this bit of back and forth, its been instructive.  From what I take from it...shutting the extreme down is half-a-dozen one or the other.  Doesn't seem it will effect the unit itself, its longevity...but its warmth suggests to me energy is being used.  My thinking is if my wife and I are going to be gone for several days or say a week's time...from the standpoint of energy, wouldn't hurt to shut it down.  As for storms...the feeling is it should not all that much matter.

  • How do I connect a PC via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme router?

I just replaced an old Actiontec router with a new Apple Airport Extreme router to work with my Verizon FIOS service. Connection to all Apple products via ethernet or wireless works OK, however I cannot get the PC up and running via its ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme. Any help would be much appreciated.

If your other devices are working then it is probably the PC's IP configuration.
First, make sure that the PC is actually connected to the Extreme by verifying the lights are on at the Ethernet ports on the PC and the Extreme.
If you are using DHCP to manage the IP addresses then make sure that the PC is configured to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" for both IP versions 4 and 6.
When I replaced my Linksys w/ an Extreme I forgot that I had a couple devices configured with static (manual) IPs.  My old one used the "192.168.1.nn" and my Extreme defaulted to "10.0.1.nn". Once i converted all the static IPs to the correct subnet then all was good.

  • How do I find my Airport Extreme router online?

When I type in the address from my Airport Extreme router (version 802.11n), I cannot find it online. It does not show as an IP address. I am having some problems with my printer and want to set up a static IP address, but want to make sure that I use the correct one. Is there a way to make sure there is only one IP address being used?

You must use the Airport Utility application on your PC to configure the Airports. They are not configured with a web based program.
