AirPort Extreme runs at different speeds for different devices.  Please help.

I have a 4th gen Arport Extreme 802.11n.  My iMac gets a download speed of between 15-20Mbps depending on time of day.  All other devices top out at about 1Mbps.  I can't figure out why or how to get it worked out.  One of the devices I tried was my iPhone, so I took it to a different hotspot and it works fine, so the iPhone is not the problem.  I've updated all my software and have rebooted the Airport.  I'm not sure what else to do.  If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

Just connected both my ipad and atv to my airport expresses 2.4N-B-G network and getting a reading of 72 for the rate on both devices. This network has my roomates older g4 power book connected to it which of course will slow down the network. My atv2 also showed one less bar reception than the when it was connected to the 5ghz extremes network which had 5 bars.
I find this odd. Would love some comments.

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

  • Airport Extreme REQUIRES powered USB hub for external HDDs

Just bought an Airport Extreme Wireless dual-band N router (January 2012).  It works very well and having the separate 2.5 and 5 GHz bands is a fantastic feature.  Setup was really easy and it essentially worked 'out of the box'.  The one issue I had is attaching a USB Western Digital 1 TB HDD to share on the network and use for Time Machine backups from multiple MacBook Pro laptops.
The drive would appear in the Aiport Utility's "Share Hard Drive" tab, but it was listed as zero bytes and wasn't available to actually share out over the network.  I formatted it as a single volume to make sure there wasn't an issue with the drive itself (although it should support multiple partitions on a drive), and it mounted to my Mac just fine, but it still would not work with the Airport Extreme.
After reading several posts on these Apple forums I picked up the fact that the only way most people get their hard drives to work is by purchasing a powered USB hub and connecting that between the Extreme and the hard drive.  Some hard drives do appear to work plugged directly into the Airport Extreme, but that seems to be more of the exception than the rule.
The reason given is that the USB port on the Airport Extreme was originally designed for printers and is basically underpowered for proper HDD connections. Adding a powered USB hub not only allows USB hard drives to work, but you can connect multiple USB devices (hard drives and printers) to share over the Airport Extreme through the powered hub, so you do get that added feature.
So if you have plans to upgrade to the incredibly fast and efficient Airport Extreme and plan to do your Time Machine Backups wirelessly (which works very well), add a powered USB hub to your purchase to avoid some frustration.  I picked up a four-port powered USB hub at Staples for $30.
It's a great purchase otherwise.  Four out of five stars in my review.

For anyone else who reads this post, the respondents are correct.  I cannot find anything directly from Apple that states explicity the support for Time Machine backups to a USB drive on a second generation Apple Airport Extreme.  I would love to see their detailed case studies and latest tests that demonstrate the backup corruption isues, and more recent tests conducted with the latest Airport Extreme, running the latest firmware with Lion 10.7.2.
Having said that, each person who is interested in this as a backup solution should consider more than one source before making a final decision:

The Apple Support articles referenced that explicity state TS does not work with Airport Extreme mounted USB drives are for older OS X 10.5 and 10.6.  I cannot find anything for 10.7 that states the same thing:
    Older Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    http://Pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
The other thing you can do is on the Time Machine menu, hold down the "Option" key and use the 'verify backups' option to help ensure that your TS backups are valid.
Hopefully Apple will come out with an official statement soon that speaks directly to the 2nd generation Airport Extreme on the latest firmware running TS backups from OS X Lion 10.7.
My statement about the need for a powered USB hub to have much better success with USB attached hard drives still stands.

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids?  His computer is hardwired to the modem.

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
Click the Access Control tab below the icons
    Select Timed Access
For more details on this, click the Help menu at the top of the screen and enter the following phrase into the search box:
Controlling access to your wireless network
A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • AIRPORT EXTREME RUNNING EXTREMELY SLOW., AIRPORT EXTREME RUNNING EXTREMELY SLOW.

why is a brand new airport extreme running extremely slow. Worked fine before the firmware update.

I nearly fainted when I just read your post.  I bought the new airport extreme on June 24, 2011, just as the store was closing -- 8:45 PM.   At home it worked well right out of the box, but the next morning it has been nothing but trouble.    I wracked my brain to figure out what could change overnight, and your suggestion that it was updated by firmware is logical.  Oddly, it works well with my desktop, which is less than two feet away (I don't use ethernet), but in the next room over it is fast only sporadically.    I replaced the prior extreme because it suddenly quit, and the genius spent some time diagnosing it and concluded it no longer worked.

Edge has very clear restrictions, one being that you must have 6 months of clean payment history which you don't. Either wait until April 14, or good luck at Sprint.
I am unsure how it can be determined the payment mix up was the fault of CS, but regardless, the mix up was done. There can be any number of reasons why a payment could be missed without any fault on your part, however you are still the responsible party for the account and must live with the repercussions.

  • Airport Extreme (3rd Gen) super slow on selective devices?

Hi, I have a problem here that's got me scratching my head.  I have had a 3rd Gen Airport Extreme 802.11n (MB763LL/A) for over 2 years now.  For the most part it's worked great, allowing me to get the full speed I pay for through my ISP on all my devices: PC, Macbook Pro, iPod, iPad, Android Phone etc.  However, recently I've noticed that the only device that I can get the full speed on is my macbook pro (4-5 Mbps down).  All other devices now crawl at a speed of <1 Mbps down.  I restored the Airport to factory settings and set it up again as new, but the same problem remains - full speed on macbook pro, painfully slow on all other devices including iPad and iPod.
I tried connecting the cable modem to a linksys router that I had lying around and as soon as I set up the network, all devices were connected and downloading at the full 4-5 Mbps speeds.  So it definitely seems to be an issue related to the Airport rather than the wireless radios in individual devices.  The funny thing is that I've made no changes to the airport - no firmware updates, no new devices etc.
What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Yes, I have had similar problems...
I have a 2nd gen AEBS TimeCapsule as the main router, and a 1st gen AEBS acting as a bridge to extend the network.  Both have up-to-date software, as do all of my Macs.
After moving my MBP from one end of the house to the other and back (so, bouncing between the wifi units), I got into a situation where it looked like nobody else was online in bonjour chat, even though they were, and some of them could see each other. Some could even see me.  But my chat showed nobody else online.
At the same time, I found that I could no longer print to my (bonjour) print queue. Others could also not print.
Rebooting my laptop did nothing, nor did switching ipv6 off and on (per some recommendations I saw), nor anything else.
The ONLY thing that finally got it all working was when I decided to bounce the AEBSes (I used hard power-offs), and then instantly my chat started showing other bonjour users, and I could print.

    Hey thanks for replying.
    Here's what I did:
First I tried the Winsock reset in the Command prompt. Nothing changed.
Next, I tried the instructions on http://http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123. The only other program that came up on the 'Winsock Providers' tab on the program was 2 Windows Live applications, which I can do without. So I deleted all Windows Live Applications.
I did the Winsock reset in the Command Prompt again and rebooted my comp.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. iTunes keeps freezing at various stages of the sync, then shows the candy cane-striped bar with either the words 'Finishing sync' or 'Cancelling sync', before showing the Apple logo.
Sometimes, iTunes gets to the syncing stage - "Copying # of ####" - where it will trudge through the first, second and third tracks before flashing "Copying 4 of ####" for a split second and I catch "Cancelling sync" briefly before the Apple logo appears.
Again, I've repeated the steps I mentioned in my previous post. Does ANYONE know when the new version of iTunes is set to be released?! This one is driving me INSANE, to say the least!!

Apple does not sell an unlocked iPhone. Some cell carriers offer the option to purchase an unlocked phone at a significantly higher price. Your friend could go to Hong Kong and buy an unlocked phone from an authorized carrier but if he has any problems with the phone, he will need to take it back to the country where he purchased it.

I have the Jetpack 4GLTE, what is the Mbps download and upload speeds for this device?

The avgrage real speed will be more in the area of 25 to 38 Mbps  You would need to be in a strong signal area with high grade cell tower service and low customer use to even reach 50 Mbps.
From Verizon page.  Just be aware that using the MiFi 6620L can cost a lot of money. And you can thank the device's fast performance for that. In my testing around the San Francisco Bay Area, rathe device delivered blazing-fast download speeds that nged between around 10Mbps to around 40Mbps. At those speeds, you can burn through 4GB of data in just less than an hour. Once you reach the cap, of course, you'll have to pay somewhere between $10 to $15 for each additional gigabyte, depending on the plan you sign up for.

I have not done a factory reset, I was trying to find out if I had some setting configured wrong first.  I figured I'd just make things worse if went through a reset!

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.
