Airport Extreme setup problems on existing WDS network - Please help!

I just bought a Time Capsule and have setup a WDS network for the house. The Airport Express joins the network just fine as a remote WDS device. I cannot get the Airport Extreme (v5.7) to join the same network. It just continues to make a *separate network with the same name* despite the Channel being the same, the WDS being set to remote, and the main ID of the Time Capsule has been put in correctly. In other words, since I setup the airport Express correctly, I cannot figure out for the life of me why the Airport Extreme is not joining correctly.
PLEASE HELP. I've been trying this for 6 hours now and countless total restarts by hard resets of all the equipment.

Hello arthung. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's double-check your WDS setup ...
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "hard" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AEBS
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX.
o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

  • I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network

I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network and I had to change all my ip addresses.  I managed to catch on to the apple replacement range and reset all my printers' addresses manually.  Was there an easier way to handle this?  Also, I lost the connection to my WD Worldbook drive though and haven't been able to come up with a work around.  Any ideas would help, thanks!

First, to answer your question about the WD drive - I could not find it with an ethernet connection.  I tried connecting to the usb port on the Extreme, but it was not visible there either.
When connecting an external network drive to the AirPort Extreme by Ethernet, the drive would be providing the file sharing service. This would be typical of a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. If your WD Worldbook offers NAS services then it should be found by network clients per WD's instructions.
When connected to the Extreme's USB port, the Extreme would take over the file server services. However, the drive must not be formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT as either are not recognizable by the Extreme for sharing out. My guess is this is the case and why the AirPort Utility cannot "find" the drive.
If your WD Worldbook has an Ethernet interface that is the one you should use for best performance. It is still possible that this drive is using an IP address that is not in the default range of the Extreme.
How can I reset the IP range on the router.  I have to use the iPad app to manage the router and I didn't see any way to change the range.  Did I miss something or would I need to use an Mac computer to get more options?
You can change the IP address range of your AirPort using the AirPort Utility on your iPad.
    To change the range:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
    Select Advanced.
    Select DHCP Range.
    Select 192.168

  • Verizon DSL and Airport Extreme Setup Problem

I have Verizon DSL (not FIOS). I am using a Westell modem, model number B90-210015-04.
I try to go through the setup but the Airport Extreme Utility says it cannot find a valid IP address (the light keeps flashing).
I have it setup in bridge mode since I think my modem is also a router. However, there are a lot of other inputs in the setup and I don't know if I need to put in anything for those (e.g. DNS Servers, Domain Name, etc.). I called Verizon and they said there shouldn't be any special inputs. They implied it should just work out of the box.
The modem is working with my existing Netgear router (model number WGR614 v4).
    Any help?

Had the same problem. Had the same setup as yours.
If you use WPA/WPA2 and if your password is too short (less than or equal to 8 characters), the AirPort Extreme Utility will misleadingly tell you it cannot find a valid IP address. As it turns out, WPA/WPA2 requires a longer password (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wpa2). I don't understand why a weak password would result in a confusing error message like this, but after I used a stronger and longer password, the dreadful amber light finally turned green!
PS: I didn't enter any DNS/DHCP info nor my DSL account/password info throughout the entire setup process. I figured that if I didn't need these pieces of information with the old router before then I shouldn't need them with this new hardware.

  • AIrport Extreme-n internet issue with WDS networking

I have 1 AIRPORT EXTREME-n STATION set as the MAIN STATION connected to a modem.
With the following configuration my Internet connection drops every 4-5 minutes and I have to reset modem and Airport Extreme:
    - A second Airport Extreme-n (set as RELAY) connected to the main station
    - 1 Airport Express unit (set as remote) connected to the main station
    - 2 Airport Express units (set as remote) connected to the relay station
With the following configuration my Internet connection does NOT drop:
    - Second Airport Extreme-n (set as REMOTE) connected to the main one
    - 3 Airport Extreme units (set as remote) connected to the main station
I need to connect everything as in the first case scenario, because two of the Airport Extreme units are quite far from the main Airport Extreme station (I bought a second Extreme station to extend the signal!).
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Powerbook g4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Not trying to insult you with basics, but there are a few things you can try with your scenario (which is probably one of the most advanced and therefore problem-prone setups). It may also be there are just some issues that Apple has to work out in future updates.
    1. Factory reset on ALL 5 units.
    2. Changing channels (use only 1, 6, or 11 - there are reasons why).
    3. Try changing encryption levels to at least see if that seems to be an issue. I usually start with "None" to eliminate a bad link in the chain.
    4. Power levels lowering one or both units may actually help in some situations.
    5. Since you are obviously running 2.4GHz with compatibility for BG clients, there are some other settings to play with like interference robustness on/off, multicast rate, etc.
    Hope you get it going.

  • Airport Extreme Setup Problem

I just bought an airport extrm to replace an old wi-fi router w/issues. Despite a solid green light on the airport extreme, the computer won't even connect to the internet using LAN cable plugged into wi-fi airport and LAN into ISP supplied Cisco modem. The Computer does see and connect to the named airport wi-fi but that connection will not connect to internet. Airport Utility icon shows the wi-fi with a green circle, but internet is yello. Cisco modem is online (confirmed by ISP).
How do I get this thing to work?

Sorry, I have not used this modem, so cannot provide any specific information on the device as far as custom configuration that may be required.
You may want to wait for another user who is familar with this modem to answer.
In the meantime.....if you have not already done so.....power off the modem by unplugging the power cord from the back of the device
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the modem
Leave the modem powered off at least 15 minutes, 30 would be better
Power off the AirPort Extreme by pulling the power cord from the back of the device
After the modem power down period, connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the cable modem, and let it run for 10 minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run a few minutes
Check the connection to see if the modem has issued a valid IP address to the AirPort Extreme so that it can connect to the Internet.

  • Airport Extreme setup in my class... HELP

Ok so I've had this issue before & fixed it but it always takes forever. I'm setting up a brand new basestation on a macbook, ran the install software got the green light but I can't connect to the internet. Have ran diagnostics etc but won't work. I'm trying to remember was it something about a new location that fixes the problem? Help help help!

a bit more info... I work in a school & I am connecting via the ethernet cable that we always connect to. It is a network cable though. Having said that the teacher next door has a linkys wireless solution & no problems. I get a green light but no internet. When I go through network diagnostics it is the internet & server lights that are still red. I always seem to have this problem. The majority of the macbooks will connect to the linkys setup next door but some won't. As I said in my previous post, I'm pretty sure I've had this problem befoe at home when I'm brought a school mac home. Location seems to ring a bell?

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

  • Airport Express connecting to an existing wired network

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect an Airport Express unit to an existing wired network, can someone please help me to set this up or what I need to do? I originally connected the ethernet cable from the device (airport express) to the switch it was on but it didn't work and the other computers were connecting to that network. Should I setup the Airport Express in Bridge Mode or will i need to fiddle around with the settings a bit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Not sure what the difficulty is here.
All you really need to do is connect the Express to the switch with an Ethernet connection, open AirPort Utility on your Windows machine, and click Continue to get the process going.
If you need to download and install AirPort Utility for the PC, it is here:
    AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows
Select the "Create a wireless network" option, assign a device name and password to the Express, then assign a wireless network name and password for the wireless network that you want the Express to provide.
Select the Bridge Mode option when it appears and click Update to save the settings.
The Express will restart and you should have a green light on the Express.
Then, log on to that wireless network from the iPad.

  • My airport express (n) and my airport express (g) in a WDS network. . help?

    Hey guys,
I have two airport expresses. Up until now I've had the Wireless N version plugged into the modem, and then have that as part of a WDS network bridging to the G express upstairs.
The N one has been temperamentla and sometimes needs a reset to work - as I game wireless this means I get cut out alot.
I've decided to switch them around now and have switched each physical base station.
I went into Aiport utility and simply changed the settings in each one around.
For example where the main airport was the "Main" Participate in WDS Network, I changed that to "Remote WDS Network". Where the "Remote WDS Network, I've changed to "Main WDS Network".
The end result is I get solid green lights on both (so the network is on) however in Network Settings I get "The network is connected via a self assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet".
    I'm currently typing this wired.
Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

The use of n and g together may cause issues since they set up different through the software. The one plugged into the modem should be main. The g uses the "WDS" setting, and the n uses something different like "extend network". I am dumbfounded as to how the settings need to be to work correctly. I have to g devices and one n device, and I had to use the two g devices to extend my network, and the n device is just for AirTunes. It doesn't work well anymore since apple updated the firmware and updated iTunes. I feel Apple have messed up big time. Check the boards and you will notice lots of issues that have become permanent problems recently with all the updates apple has thrown at us. My system worked flawlessly for 6 years, now it is nothing but dropouts, expresses disappearing from network and then reappearing hours later. It is a big problem that Apple created.

  • Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Can multiple Airport Expresses be connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?

I am a big fan of both the Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  In my work environment, I need to create a good quality single wireless network around 2 large aircraft hangars and some offices at the perimeters.  We have a good quality wired Cat5e ethernet network extended between the buildings and offices now.  Is this possible and does it seem like a good practical solution?  I think that 4 or 5 Airport expresses would easily provide good wireless coverage in the needed areas.

Can multiple AirPort Expresses be connected via ethernet to an AirPort Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?
Yes, this will work just fine as long as any individual Ethernet cable run will not exceed much over 330 feet or about 100 meters.

    Hi, Mrs.Frankie57.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you want to delete a song from your iOS device on iOS 7, tap Songs, swipe the song from right to left, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
