Airport extreme stopped conneting asking for dns server?

my internet connection sopped out of nowhere and in airport utility it's asking for the dns server(s) numbers which 2 spaces are blank...

For some reason, the communication between the Time Capsule and the Internet modem has stopped working properly.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
(OPTIONAL) While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

  • AirPort Extreme can't find Comcast DNS Server

I have a relatively new AirPort Extreme Base Station router purchased from BestBuy in 4/2014 along with a new Motorola modem receiving Comcast Blast! internet service (because I have no other option as a San Francisco resident).  I am running OSX 10.9.4 on a MBP retina but this problem affects all devices on the network, hard-wired and wireless.
My internet has been working fine since initially configuring the router and modem but the other night the internet simply stopped.
A full reset of the modem, router in the proper order, while waiting an appropriate amount of time to release the IP returns me to the same "disconnected" state (see attachment).
Since the internet is able to be obtained by connecting directly to the modem, Comcast blames the router, refuses further support and suggests calling Apple.
The Airport Extreme appears to be in perfect working order and I tried restore it to factory setting several times to no avail.  The peculiar thing is that occasionally following a restart via the menu in AirPort Utility, the internet briefly becomes available and then disconnects.
This has been on of the most frustrating consumer experiences I have ever had on many levels mostly because after several days, I still am at a loss for a viable solution which is compounded by the fact that I am a computer scientist working in tech, not a helpless, technology-illiterate person.
I do not know enough about DNS Servers to pinpoint why the server appears to refuse internet when it notices the router.
Are there any configuration settings I can try on the advanced dialogs (ie switching from NAT/DHCP to only DHCP)?
Please help.  I still have no internet.

There is a bad bug with some Motorola modems with the ethernet on the WAN port.
It is simply not connecting properly. What modem is it??
It is not uniform.. but it happens to a large enough number of people that there is a fair number of threads about modem issues and the newer airports.
Please do a search yourself here for experience with your particular model.
But you have blotted out the very info I need to help you.
I need to see IP address and DNS.. if you are on dynamic IP it makes no difference to post it.. you will have a new IP tomorrow.
I have suggested a work around in using a crossover cable or a small 10/100 switch between the modem and the airport.. it helps for some.
There is also some more info you can get using the natutil command from terminal.. particularly it will show the WAN link speed.. which I want to force down to 100mbit.
Terminal command to check Apple router status. natutil
No luck return the airport to apple for checking / replacement.. or bridge it and buy another router.. this isn't hard and Apple will doubtless produce a new firmware that might fix it if it isn't some nasty hardware thing.

  • Airport Extreme invalid IP address, no DNS server

Hardware: Motorola SURFboard SB6141, Airport Extreme A1408
I recently set up a new internet service with Cox, plugged in the SB6141 and A1408 and everything set up perfectly, solid green light and wireless was flawless. However, electricity to my house had to be reset, and when the power came back on the green light on the Airport Extreme started to flashing amber. I did several hard/factory resets of the Airport Extreme as well as unplugging the modem and leaving everything unplugged for several minutes and then plugging everything back in. No matter what combination of things I try to do, the Airport Utility always tells me the same 2 errors: invalid IP address and no DNS server. Why was the Airport Extreme able to automatically set up the first time, but not now? Any ideas of what I can do? Thanks!

I have also looked through other threads about this same problem, but none of the solutions (e.g. posts by Tesserax, followed to the letter) so far have worked.
Here are other things I have tried:
    1. Called Cox to have them reset my modem, internet works through Ethernet directly from the modem
    2. Downgraded AEBS firmware to 7.6.1 (oddly enough, now I cannot for the life of me update the firmware back to 7.6.4, always says cannot connect to update server)
I ran through the various solutions from this thread: "No DNS servers" and "Internet connection" problems with Comcast?
Still getting that pesky blinking amber light.

  • My Airport Extreme Stops working every evening...

Funny! My Airport Extreme stops working every evening at about the same time for 4-5 hours. I am assuming that there is some sort of "usage setting" that needs to be set. Unfortunately I cannot find that setting. Any help appreciated.

A windows 7 laptop is also not seeing the airport extreme wifi signal. So I have a Mac Book Air, iPad & wired devices connected fine. I have an iPhone 3Gs, an iPhone 4 and a windows 7 PC all failing to connect. They all connect fine to other wifi devices. They all connected fine to the Airport extreme until the recent problems started. I don't think it's an iPhone issue, therefore - more likely to be an issue with the Airport extreme?

  • So my airport extreme recently had some nat/dns issue and in the airport utility displayed a warning about it and to correct it. I wasn't sure what to do so i pressed the resolve icon and now my guest network is not working.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Ask another DNS server if connection fails with the current one

    Hello,
I'd like to ask if there's an addon available or a hidden feature in Firefox which allows it to enable trying to use other DNS servers if a connection failed to a server. Lets do an example, would be the easiest way of explaining:
    1. I want to connect to Google.com
    2. Firefox / Windows asks the DNS server for the IP
    3. Firefox tries to connect to Google but fails (Website took to long to answer for example)
    4. Firefox will try another DNS server you have entered in your IPv4 DNS Page
Or does Firefox already do that? Because sometimes it fails to connect to a server while using a special DNS server. If I change the settings to another DNS Server it works.
    Thank you

    Please update to version 20.

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 server app. FTP help. I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac folder. It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?

So I have set up a localhost area in my Mac. I have the new server.app and I am running yosemite 10.10.2 .
I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac .
It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?
I am pretty certain that the Serveris "localhost",
Name is my macs name (like my-mac-min)
    password is "my login password"
    and they suggest port 21.
But what is the file path, lets just say my site is set up http://localhost/siteftp and is actually at my Users/Sites/siteftp folder.
Why cant this program connect to the mac.
Is it because they are both operating in the same localhost enviroment,
could it be my folder permissions are not correct on siteftp folder?
    Help please !

I tried turning the computer off and then back on. The alerts don't show the notice to update as resolved. Hopefully this is not a problem or an indicator or another problem. Should I ignore or reload 10.10.1 from the app store to trigger a resolved check in a green circle?
Interesting that I had to buy server software after my free Yosemite download. I would have hoped that the two pieces of software would have gone together without any complication. It is not positive to end up buying a problem. Ah well, time to move on.

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

  • Airport Extreme with ATT Router for Open DNS use

I'd like my whole home network to have a filter on it so all computers and hand devices are protected. I get my internet with an ATT router which I can not change the DNS servers. ATT says they can not be changed. But I have an airport extreme directly connected to the ATT router. The extreme supplies wi-fi to the house. I can not change the DNS settings in the extreme. They are grayed out. I'm assuming it has something to do with the connection to the ATT router. Does anyone know how I can put a DNS address in the extreme?
Some of the settings on the extreme are:
Internet Tab: connect using DHCP, DNS Servers "grayed out", Domain Name "grayed out"
Network Tab: Router Mode (off (bridge mode))
    thanks!

Does anyone know how I can put a DNS address in the extreme?
Not sure what you mean that you cannot enter the DNS numbers on your AirPort Extreme configuration page.
Open up AirPort Utility and select the Internet tab
Look at the first DNS entry there. There should be a cursor at the beginning of the DNS Server Box. If not, click to set the insertion point at the beginning of the box.
Simply start typing in the DNS server number that you want to use.....208.67.222.222...... and it will overwrite the grayed out values there.
Do the same for the second DNS box....208.67.220.220.
Click Update at the lower right and you are all set.

  • Why does my airport extreme stop issuing dynamic ip

On several occasions, my airport extreme 5th gen stops issuing IP's when computers are connected to the network and seeking dynamic IP's.
Computers that are already connected work fine, but those that are restarted. or computers being connected by WiFi cannot capture a DHCP generated IP.
The problem originally occured occasionally on a previous airport extreme, so I replaced it with a new 5th generation. This AE also shows the same problem on occasion ( perhaps once every few months).
My network has this AE that serves as the connection to the internet, and as the DHCP server, plus four additionl AE's acting bridges. Each of these four have static IP's in the network.
I have a second internal network attached to the same DSL system using a different external IP. This network only differs from the first in that it only has two AE's, one of which is the DHCP server for that network.
Can anyone suggest what might be triggering this problem?
    Thanks
    JD

No problem.. but I am interested to hear what happens.
The terminal command btw is based on default password ie. public.
If you change the password as you are forced to do now in v6 utility the command changes to
    natutil -v -i -s
It will then request a password from you.
Not all of the info here is correct.. the dhcp range is not correct.
    natutil -v -i -s
    Enter Password:

  • My airport express can't locate a dns server

I am unable to connect to the Internet, with my Mac,iPad or iPhone, even with the light green. I used my airport utility and it can't find a Dns server.
I called my Internet provider and they said everything looked alright on there end.
Does any body know what it might be?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.

That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. • Airport extreme stop working suddenly

I have an airport extreme that is used to be connected to Vonage for the internet phone. It goes from cable modem>Vonage>airport extreme. It used to works quite well when I have the airport extreme sets to bridge mode. The problem started when I cancelled my Vonage and reconnect the airport extreme to my cable modem. At present time I cannot get any internet connection through AE. If I connect the cable modem to my computer, the internet will works fine. I'm getting some error message from AE about no internet connection, unable to obtain IP, unable to connect to DNS server.
When I put in my old router, and connect the AE to the old router and set it up in a bridge mode, I'm able to get internet connection via the AE ethernet port. I have tried to reset the AE but I'm still end up with the same problem. Does anybody encounter with similar issue in past? Any suggestion in regard how to fix this thing? I'm hoping that I don't have to spend close to $200 to replace my AE.

OK, one more wild stab and then I'm probably out of ideas (hopefully someone else has some new ones).
Way back in the stone ages (remember @Home?), you had to use an assigned host name. Is there any chance your PC and Netgear are configured with an ISP-assigned host name and your Extreme isn't? I think the host name would go in the Internet, TCP/IP, DHCP Client ID field in the AirPort Utility but I'm not sure.
To generalize this, look through all your Netgear configuration settings to see if you can find anything (like a host name, DHCP client ID, etc.) in it that you might need to transfer over to your Extreme configuration.
Beyond this I just don't know. Anyone else out there got any suggestions?

  • Internet - AirPort Extreme (b/g) - Time Capsule - File Server

I've got a small office network where files are served off a Mac mini, and iMacs connected via 802.11n wifi to the wired mini via Time Capsule. I have a spare AEBS (b/g) that I was thinking of setting it up for iPhone and guest access of internet. To keep the mini and iMacs secure, the set-up would be:
Internet -> AirPort Extreme (b/g) -> Time Capsule -> Mac mini and iMacs
The only issue I'm contemplating - the slower Ethernet ports on the Extreme - which I don't think is a problem for connecting to the Internet. Is there anything else I should be concerned about regarding network performance?
Thanks in advance for the collective wisdom!
    Message was edited by: openarchitecture

That would work. The Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) is faster than your internet connection so you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Use Airport Extreme Disk as a local web server

    Hello!
I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) with a hard disk connected and shared using Airport Disk. I'd like to install Apache HTTP server on the connected drive so that I can host a local (available to intranet users only) web site. I am running into an error compiling Apache 2.2.9, but I'm thinking it might be a limitation of what is possible on an airport disk. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.
    Best,
    Jay

    Duane:
Thank you for your response. Maybe Apple file share can help me accomplish what I want but I think FTP is the easiest means for my needs. Ill have to do more research. Ultimately, I want other people to be able to send my digital files ( up to 2-3 GB at a time) . Now I , have a converted Windows machine going through a linksys router. That was relativly easy to set up as a server able to receive FTP. I was hoping I could reduce all that machine and energy down to a single HD but it looks like that is not possible.
