Airport Extreme streaming iTunes without Internet

Hello.
I no longer have Internet access in my home. I do still have a MacBook Pro streaming 2TB of iTunes media through an AirPort Extreme to two AppleTV's, and 5 iPhones. Music, movies, and TV shows are slow to load since the loss of the introwebs.
I have read about switching to "Bridge Mode" in airport utility but am not sure what this would do other than possibly allow my iPhones to simultaneously connect to my network and have 3G access.
Any ideas on how to speed up the streaming of content?
Your sage advice is greatly appreciated.

I no longer have Internet access in my home. I do still have a MacBook Pro streaming 2TB of iTunes media through an AirPort Extreme to two AppleTV's, and 5 iPhones. Music, movies, and TV shows are slow to load since the loss of the introwebs.
Just so I understand correctly, are you saying since you no longer have Internet access, the overall streaming performance on your local wireless network has decreased? If so, Internet streaming and local network streaming are not directly related and, whether or not, you have Internet access should not matter.
Without Internet access, the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) would not get a Public IP address, but it would have a Private IP address of 10.0.1.1 ... and it would still be providing wireless clients connected to it with Private IP addresses in the 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 range.
Please compare your AEBSn's settings with the following to see if making any of the changes will help with your local network streaming performance:
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: <enter a desired Network Name or SSID>
Radio Mode: <unless you have non-"n" clients that you need your network to support, I would suggest setting this to "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)>
Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
Internet > Internet Connection
Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Distribute a range of IP addresses
Internet > TCP/IP
Configure IPv4: Manually
IP Address: 10.0.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 10.0.1.1
DNS Server(s): <leave blank>
Domain Name: <leave blank>
Internet > DHCP
DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or change to a desired starting address>
DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or change to a desired ending address>
Advanced > Logging & Statistics
Allow SNMP (unchecked)
Your AEBSn will still report at least three errors: 1) Configuration of WAN, 2) SNMP over WAN, and 3) Double NAT. These can all be safely ignored (by disabling them in the AirPort Utility) to stop the AEBSn's status light from flashing amber in this configuration.

Other than for purchased movies/TV shows, yes. You will need the internet to homeshare protected content though.

  • Can I update iOs using itunes without internet connection?

I am using an ipad mini 2, second generation. I plugged it in to itunes and there was an update avaible for ios 8. Can I update iOs using itunes without internet connection? Thank you

iTunes needs an internet connection to download the update if it has not already. Then it needs to verify the update with Apple servers prior to installation.
So in short, no, you do need at least some form of internet access to update.

I've read a lot of different websites about whether I can watch movies without internet and they've gone back and forth. I want to watch movies on bus trips and I don't want to spend money buying something I can't use for what I want. Help??

Is it possible to watch a movie purchased from Itunes without internet or an apple device?
What do you want to watch it on?
You need a computer (Mac or Windows) with iTunes, an AppleTV, an iPod touch, iPhone or iPad.

  • Connects to Airport extreme but not to internet

Whenever I close my laptop and reopen, I lose internet connection thru the airport extreme and I won't get it back. It seems that I will have connection to the Airport Extreme, but not the internet.
Sometimes what fixes it is turning the airport off and then on again (sometimes multiple times). Usually restarting the computer fixes it (but not always).
What happens is this (viewing Sysprefs/network/airport/network status and "internet connect"): the internet connect will report connecting...then will announce "connected", but show no "time elapsed" at the same time the Net status will read "airport is connected to ..network...with it's own IP address and may or may not be connected to the internet" And I won't be.
Then, when it starts working again (after the abovementioned turning off/on) it will start counting time elapsed, then in Net Status it will say "airport connected to ..network. you are connected to the internet via airport."
Also, whenever I use "internet connect" to turn the airport off, when I turn it back on again I will not have internet access, just the messages I list above. The "strenth meter" will say my signal is good (which it should be) and it says I am connected but doesn't show "elapsed time" nor will I have actual internet access.
Again, restarting the computer will usually work (less often, logging out then back in).
Another strange symptom-- When I hit the "disconnect" button under the airport section of "internet connect" it disconnects, then reconnects immediately. When I hit the disconnect button w/ in the Sysprefs/network/airport...etc, it does nothing but bring to the front window the "internet connect" window. So the only way to "disconnect" is to turn off the airport (which results in the above problem).
Side note--I am in the habit of turning off the airport (not the base, but from the computer) when I don't plan on using it for security-- am I being excessively paranoid? I do have my firewall in operation. Should I just leave it (being the airport) on all the time (in your humble opinion?
Sorry if this makes no sense or rambles, it is now 5:30 am and She Who Must Be Obeyed will be getting up in about an hour wanting to know if I fixed the computer yet. I'm tired.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Help setting up using my airport extreme to share my internet connection

I want to use my built-in airport extreme to share my internet connection with my PS3. I have a verizon aircard and have read on the internet that this can be done (but not necessarily with airport). I turned on internet sharing with airport and my ps3 reads my connection and obtains my ip address, but then it says could not connect to internet due to DNS server error.
Could someone run me down the process step-by-step so I can see what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for your help.
P.S. I have a iMac running on leopard if that matters.

ll959reds, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unfortunately the Internet Sharing provided by OS X does not provide nearly the configuration possibilities as even a very inexpensive wireless router.
Also if the firewall is enabled on the iMac, it applies equally to all ports including the AirPort (wireless) connection to the PS3. Therefore the firewall will block many of the requests from the PS3. To solve this issues, you would either need to disable the iMac's firewall or configure the iMac's firewall to allow connections via the AirPort side.
A much simpler solution is to use a wireless router instead of your iMac to provide the connection for the PS3.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme to U-verse Internet Gateway: Motorola Model NVG510

I tried to set up a new network with the Airport Extreme and get no Internet connectivity from the AT&T gateway.  The Extreme network sets up fine and I can access it from all my devices, but no Internet.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Mick Jones

It will only take a minute to check the Ethernet cable. Just connect it from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to  the Ethernet port on a computer. Turn off the wireless on the computer and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way.
If you can, great. You cannot, then you either have a bad Ethernet cable or the port on the gateway may not be working correctly.
Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes
Then, hold in the reset button on the AirPort Extreme for 10-12 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click AirPort Extreme
The utility will open up automatically, take a minute to analyze things, then suggest that the AirPort will be configured to create a new network.  The window will look like the example below, except that you will see an AirPort Extreme instead of an AirPort Express.
Network Name......type in a short, simple name that you want to call your wireless network
Base Station Name.....type in a short, simple name that you want to use to identify the AirPort Extreme
Password......type in a password that will be used for both the Base Station and Wireless Network
    Verify the password
    Click Next
You should have a green light on the AirPort Extreme in a minute or two, and you should be able to log on to the new network and get an Internet connection.

  • New Airport Extreme, Green Light,  No Internet

Trying to get wifi connection so my mom can use her new ipad I bought her for Christmas and so guests can use wifi when they visit. I connected this new airport extreme 802.11n Wi_Fi to their comcast modem. After connecting get green light on airport extreme but now no internet connection on mac desktop computer. Have tried resetting modem, powering off airport and computer... still no internet. Internet works fine using comcast modem but does not connect to internet at all with airport extreme. Help. Extremely frustrated and ready to return this airport extreme.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
It's likely not the AirPort Extreme that is causing your issue. It is the cable modem.
Perhaps you were not aware that a cable modem must be completely reset whenever there is a change in the device that the modem is connected to? Your ISP should have made this clear to you. A good reset often takes 30 minutes or more.
Push the reset button on the modem
Power off the modem for 30 minutes
Pull the battery if it's easily accessible
Power down the AirPort Extreme and your computers
After the wait period, power up the modem first and let it run for 3-4 minutes by itself.
Then power up the AirPort Extreme the same way
Then power up your other devices the same way
Please post back on your results.

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!

  • Airport extreme stops itunes stream after 30 secs

Hi guys, I am on my second airport extreme now after getting a replacment one from apple. All i really want to do with it is stream my itunes to my hi fi. It didn't work straight out of the box as I was told it would. I set it up on MacBook Pro, brought it downstairs (no longer conected to my modem) switched it on, light eventually went green, found the device on my itunes, ran my music through it and it played for about 30secs, music cut off, the light on the Airport Extreme went to flashing orange and I have to restart the power up to get it back to green. And it does the same again when I try...
Any ideas whats giong wrong, this is the second device to do this...

Same problem but I'm not on shared library.
Only one MBP with iTunes library connected directly wired via firewire
to external HD. Audio out is wired from minjack on
MBP to RCA inputs on back of tv. Video is directly from MBP via DVI.
Frontrow and iTunes both stop after just a few minutes and tv reads "no input signal"
Audio stops at this point also. I usually have an a/v reciever connected.
System prefs have screensaver set to never. Frontrow I've tried setting off and on.
The only way I can have more than 2 minutes with the exception of iTunes wit fullscreen visualizer.

  • Streaming iTunes slowing internet browsing?

I'm using an iMac (10.4) and have both Airport & Extreme - I work wirelessly and print wirelessly. I stream my iTunes to my stereo also.
Recently I've noticed that internet browsing is taking forever, it seems to be more when I'm using iTunes over the stereo - not over the built in speakers.
It gets to the point where I have to go through network diagnostics & follow that through before it 'finds' the internet again.
For the record I also have a PC which works wirelessly at the same time & is completely fine.
To say it's irritating is putting it mildly.
Any ideas? I presume the PC isn't slowing things down. Also, sometimes I lose the wireless stereo connection & have to close iTunes & restart it.

Connect your HiFi to an Apple AirPort Express base station that is set up as part of your wireless network. You can then play music from iTunes to the HiFi. Without knowing more about your HiFi it is hard to say more. See [Apple's web page|http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/features/airtunes.html] on the subject.
    Best of luck.

  • Airport Express - streaming iTunes

I've been give an Airport Express which I'd like to stream music from iTunes.
I have a MacBook Pro and a Powerbook G4 at home, both with Airport cards and would like to use the iTunes libraries from both. The MBP runs 10.6.2 and the PB runs 10.5.8.
I have an existing wireless network which I run via a Netgear DG834G router. Would it be straightforward to stream audio over the network to the Airport Express from either Mac? Also, I'm not sure how that would connect to my stereo (Denon RCD-M35DAB) as the connection is an RJ-45 and the stereo doesn't seem to have that connection.
Would it be better to buy a NAS box to store a central iTunes library and to connect to the Denon?
I'm a novice at streaming music, so grateful for any advice!
    Many thanks,
    Colin.

According to the AirPort Express FAQ, it should work. Here are a couple of excerpts that leads me to believe it should:
Question: If my computer is associated with a non-Apple wireless access point, can iTunes send an AirTunes stream to the AirPort Express?
Answer: *Yes, if AirPort Express has joined the network in client mode,* or if it is connected via wire to a LAN port on the non-Apple wireless access point.
Question: A computer connects via wire to an existing wireless access point/router. Can this wired client send an AirTunes stream to AirPort Express via the existing router?
Answer: Yes, if they are on the same subnet. These are common examples of when it would work:
    * The existing router is an AirPort Extreme Base Station set up as WDS main, with the AirPort Express set up as WDS remote.
** The AirPort Express has joined the network (AirPort or third-party) in client mode.*
    * You have a wired-only router sharing your Internet connection with a separate wireless access point that bridges the network to wireless clients. As in the two examples above, the AirPort Express would be either a WDS remote or in client mode.
The bold text would address the OP's configuration.
The variables involving third-party access points are many, which is why I always advocate an all-Apple infrastructure.

  • Play music from Airport Extreme to iPhone without open Macbook?

I recently bought the new Airport Extreme and placed my iTunes library on an external drive which I connected to the airport. Is it possible to play the music in the iTunes library on my iPhone 4S, without having my Macbook Air turned on and iTunes open?

Unfortunately, no. You still require an AirPlay "server" to stream the iTunes media from the AirPort Disk to the iPhone. Typically this server would be iTunes running on a host computer, like your MacBook Air.

  • Airport Extreme - Streaming

    Hi,
I'm thinking of purchasing an Airport extreme, but need to know if it can stream to an ATV 3.
I researched for a while and found out that I can hook up an external to the airport and point my MPBs iTunes library to it. Now, I could access that library via home sharing. Please correct me if I’m wrong so far.
If so, I wonder if it would actually transfer data from the airport to the mbp and then back to the ATV
But, I would like to access that library directly, without having to turn on the MBP, but could not find a clear YES/NO on it.
I mean it kind of defeats the purpose, other than not stuffing the mbp full with files. But if this is the case I rather connect the external to the mbp without having to run it over the network.
Does anyone have the same or a similar setup and can give my some guidance here.
    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at Powerline and it certainly seems the way to go.
Here is a puzzle, however (which probably is indicative of my lack of understanding.) If I could see the live streaming of The Americus Cup race on my computer, why could it not be sent via Powerline (ethernet) to a Mac Mini connected to my HDTV via a Kanex iAdapt 20 (mini display port to HDMI w/2 Channel Audio)?
In a different kind of experiment, I did get a DVI to HDMI cable and ran it from my computer to a small Toshiba HDTV with much better image resolution than on my computer monitor. I viewed a replay of the Americus Cup post-race press conference which I gather is still streaming from the BWM/Oracle site. It seemed to play as a full-screen HD video (without the bands on either side of the image when the feed is not HD).
So if this feed a really a "stream" why could it not work with the setup noted above?
