Airport Extreme (time capsule model) internet speed EXTREMELY slow.

Hello, first thank you for any help on this as it is a bit frustrating for me.
I recently noticed my internet speed was running significantly slower on both my MacBook Pro and on my wifes MacBook.
I had my ISP come and check out the problem. They hooked my MacBook Pro directly to the modem and my speed went from under 1 mb to over 5mb.... he then had me hook up directly to the lan port on the airport extreme and my speed was once again back down to the 1 mb range. He concluded that it must be a problem with the speed once it hits the Airport Extreme.
He ended up giving me a different modem, its a 2wire wireless. I have since connected my airport extreme to the new modem and am still pulling down the same speed, but now I have connected directly to the new 2wire wireless modem and am getting my 5 mb speed.
Can anyone give me any help or advice on what I can do with my airport extreme time capsule so that I can get the speed I should be getting from it.
Thanks again.

More information. I have a separate router for ISP connect/DHCP. I only use my Airports to create a WDS and bridge onto my home network. I have never allowed 2.4GHz or 5GHz phones in the house, just to limit interference. I live way out in the country so interference from neighbors is negligible to nonexistent. Speed testing done with Speakeasy.net/speedtest
I moved all the hard wired machines from the TC to my switch. Which will impact the speed of my backups, but it helped with internet throughput for those machines.
Then I split my WiFi into 2 separate nets, each with a connection to my home network switch. I created a b/g network with my ufo Extreme and my Express (NET 1). I left my TC set for n/b/g (NET 2). As long as my MacBook was powered off internet speed were nice and fast. As soon as I turned on my MB the speeds were impacted, not as bad as before.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 5GHz and retested. These was a small but noticeable impact for wireless machines but I have concerns because my ISP is wireless and runs at or near 5GHz.
I then changed NET 2 to be n-only 2.4Ghz and retested. Again a small impact for wireless machines whenever my MB was connected to NET 2.
I then had my MB join NET 1 and speeds were nice and fast all around. My solution, shutdown the wireless on my TC and use it as just a network drive while I use my old reliable b/g hardware for WiFi.
Maybe someday this Draft version of 802.11n will be finalized and have no issues.

  • New AirPort Extreme time capsule to replace current AEBS

Is there a simple way to do this. I want to replace an old  AEBS with a new AirPort Extreme time capsule. Do I have to create a new network? I'm not really extending the network, I'm just replacing the base station. If I use the exact name of my old wireless network and the exact password, will all devices abe ble to automatically connect to the new base station? Should I expect any trouble connecting to the pre-existing modem that the other base station was connected to? I'm hoping to avoid calls to the ISP and/or Apple and many hours of lost Internet time. Thanks

  • How do I move my AirPort Extreme time capsule from my old house to my new house without losing the backups?

I have an AirPort Extreme Time Capsule wifi router and I just moved to a new house and I need to relocate the device without losing any of my old backups from my old mac as well as my new Mac! I could really use some advice on how to do it without any problems! I really appreciate it!

Physical location has no bearing on anything, since you're also moving your network and all other devices. Just plug everything in and it should work just as it did before.

  • Can I connect my Airport Extreme Time Capsule via ethernet to another router (non-Apple)?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few hours and have gotten nowhere. I have an Archer C7 AC1750 router set up in my office, connected to my Zoom 5341 DOCSIS 3.0 Modem; this has been my main router and has worked fine. I have moved some things around and now have my PS3 and PS4 in my master bedroom but can no longer hook them up via ethernet to the Archer C7. I have run ethernet through the attic into the master bedroom and want to use my Airport Extreme Time Capsule as a way to hook up the consoles via ethernet. If I can use the Airport Extreme to extend my wireless network back to the bedrooms that is even better, although that is an afterthought.
I am not sure what the settings need to be to make this happen. I have searched and tried a number of things but have not found a working solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please start over with a default reset on the Time Capsule. This will not affect any of the stored data that you might have on the drive. You can use the same device name and password that you used before if you wish.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes. Then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable connection from the Archer router connects to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    Open up AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click on Time Capsule xxxxxx
AirPort Utility will suggest a setup, which you want to ignore
Instead, click the Other Options button
Select the Create a new wireless network setting and click Next
In the Network Name box, enter the exact name of your Archer wireless network
In the Base Station name box, enter a name that you want to use for the Time Capsule device
Uncheck the box to use a single password
In the Network Password box, enter the password for the Archer wireless network
    Verify on the next line
In the Base Staion box, enter a password that you want to use as a device password for the Time Capsule
    Verify on the next line
Click Next and wait while the AirPort Utility creates a network
Ignore the step about unplugging the modem and click Next
Do not enable the Guest Network option and click Next
Wait while the network is being set up. When you see the message that the wireless network is available, click Done
The Time Capsule will now appear in AirPort Utility with a blinking amber light
Click on the Time Capsule icon, and then click on Edit in the next small box that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the window
Change the setting for Router Mode from DHCP and NAT to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and click Continue
Wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart and you should have a green light
It would be an excellent idea to power off both the Time Capsule and Archer router now, wait a minute, then start the Archer router and let it run a minute. Then, start the Time Capsule up and give it a minute
You should be all set. The Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are now operable and the wireless network has been extended using AES encryption.

I am a first time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I use a macbook pro and imac. I installed the router today and got on wirelessly. BUT I cannot get my 2 printers that were previously wireless to find the router signal. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

  • I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

I have an AirPort Extreme time capsule . I need to extend my wifi network range. Which devise is better ?? Airport express or AirPort Extreme ??

Since you have the new Time Capsule, then you will need a new AirPort Extreme to match the performance capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If best quality is preferred, you will need to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection between the devices. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can locate the AirPort Extreme exactly where it is needed...and there will be no loss of signal through the Ethernet cable.
A wireless connection will result in a significant drop in performance, but it might be OK for your uses, if you want to try it that way first to see if the performance is acceptable.
It is really important that the AirPort Extreme be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
A line-of-sight relationship between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be the goal, with the AirPort Extreme located about half way between the Time Capsule and the general area where you need more wireless signal coverage.

  • 2TB airport extreme time capsule says it's 'full'?

I am unable to complete a time machine back up to a 2TB airport extreme time capsule because it is 'full' - what is going on?  I thought time machine automatically deleted the oldest back up so there is always room?  Also I don't understand how I could fill 2TB?  Thanks!

That's what I thought too.  Just tried again & I get "Backup Failed - there isn't enough space on airport".  When I click on 'details' it suggests I "Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."  Any suggestions?

It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • Airport express / extreme / Time Capsule Range

Airport express / extreme / Time Capsule Range
Can anyone please tell me what is the approximate range of Apple Airport Products.
While doing sell in Apple store customer always ask us this question and we don't had any answer for it.
So please if anyone has the answer do reply on this.
    - - - Akshay k. (ACMT)

The range is about 50 meters or 150 feet.....but this assumes that the AirPort is being used in a very large open space like a aircraft hangar.....with no obstructions in the signal path.
Chances are, your home is laid out a bit differently, so without knowing a number of variable factors like.....
    1) How many walls there will be in the signal path between wireless devices
    2) The actual construction type of the walls, ceilings, etc
    3) Heavy furniture, large mirrors, etc. in the signal path
4 ) Other wireless networks around your home
    5) Other wireless devices like cordless phones, BlueTooth devices, etc.
It would be impossible to tell you what the actual range might be in your home.
In general, assuming normal modern home construction, you would not want the wireless signal to pass through more than 2 or 3 walls....since each wall will absorb on average about 15-25% of the wireless signal. A ceiling will absorb even more because of its thickness.

  • How to change file ownership/permission on Airport Extreme Time Capsule

I have a 3TB Airport Extreme Time Capsule that currently have a folder with a number of files.  The problem is it won't let me delete some of these files because I don't have permission.  On a mac it would be trivial to either take ownership or change my permissions.  Any ideas on how I can do this on the TC?

    niblettes wrote:
I only know what OSX tells me -- so my information is only as good as its messages.
Locked files seem like a good possibility though.
Your first post seemed to say that some specific files couldn't be deleted. If you know any of their names, see if one is locked.  if not, that isn't the problem.  If it is, unlock it and try to delete.  If it still won't delete, that's not the problem, either (or at least not all of it).
How can I just make all file unlocked since I have no idea which of the tens of thousands of file are at fault?
I know in OSX its easy to change permissions on a folder and then propagate that change to all child foders and files.  Does locking/unlocking work the same?
If you don't know of any specific files, try creating one, locking it, then seeing if you can delete it.
There doesn't seem to be any way to unlock all files in a folder.
Do you want to delete everything on the TC?  If so, just erase it with Airport Utility -- only takes seconds.
EDIT:  These files wouldn't be in Time Machine backups, would they?  If so, you can only delete entire backups via the Finder, not individual files or folders.  But the message OSX usually sends when you try that says so fairly clearly.

  • Airport extreme time capsule. Wifi dropping

I have an airport base time capsule 3rd generation with 2 airport express as range extenders. Up until recently the network worked very well. Lately the wifi keeps dropping. One moment I'll be on wifi, the next ill be on 3G, then back again. My apple tv keeps dropping on and off as well. It's been my experience with other routers that they have a somewhat limited life. I'm wondering if it's time to upgrade to the 5th generation. Since the time capsule feature works fine, can I still use that as the backup while getting a new base? By the way, all software and firmware has been updated

It says you have the wrong password.
WPA handshake failed with STA 10:68:3f:46:d2:69 likely due to bad password from client
Reset the TC to factory and start again.
But do not be surprised if the v5 utility no longer works to do the setup.

  • Extend present Time Capsule network with an Extreme

I currently have a wireless network in my house using a Time Capsule that is connected to the modem in the office. I bought a Blu-Ray player that is connected to my TV in the living room, and if I plug it directly in to a router using an ethernet cable, I can stream movies to my TV. Sooooo.....I found the old Airport Extreme I used before I bought the Time Capsule, and I would like to use it to extend my network to the living room. I have the Extreme plugged in right now by the BLu-Ray player, and the name I used for the old Extreme network is showing up on my laptop, as well as the new Time Capsule network. The Extreme is blinking amber. What do I need to do to just add this Extreme as an extension of my network so I can connect it to my Bu-Ray via a ethernet. Thanks.

Since you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you can take advantage of the "extend a network" feature.
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Airport time capsule wi-fi speed

I have an Airport Time Capsule and my internet service is 100Mbps. Hard wired to the Time Capsule I get close to 100Mbps that but when using wi-fi the max speed is around 40Mbps. Is this a function of the unit or is there a setting that I need to change?

So to get a good signal to my Smart TV which is in the next room I guess I should hard wire it also.
Hard wired connections are always the better performance and reliability choice, if possible.
As far as a good location for the Time Capsule for wireless, think of it as if it were a water sprinkler and you want to get as much of the room as "wet" as possible.
There might be a worse spot to locate a Time Capsule than under a desk, but off hand, I can't think of one unless it is inside a cabinet.
The A1355 version is known as a 3rd Generation Time Capsule. Depending on when you purchased the product, it is 4-5 years old at this point. Five years, on average, is about all that you can really expect from a router designed for home use, so you might want to start thinking about a replacement at some point. The top rated speed on the 3rd Generation is 540 Mbps, far greater than your ISP can hope to deliver.
Here is a comparison of the Time Capsule models:

  • AirPort Time Capsule Model A1470 Shuts Down

    Hello!
I purchased an AirPort Time Capsule last week for more than $300 to replace Model A1409, which suddenly shut down and never came on again.
The new AirPort Time Capsule (Model A1470) shuts down at least 4 times a day every day.  I unplug it and plug it back in and it reconnects.  This happens at random times when I'm using the computer and when I'm not.  Sometimes it happens when we're watching a movie on the TV and after I get it up and running again I need to enter all of the password infromation on the television again.
    This is a 2TB Model A1470.
Having reliable wifi is a must because I am a work-at-home online educator and have 40-hours per week of office hours with continuous IM access to my students.
Should I return it or is there something I missed?

When you say shuts down.. what does that actually mean??
The new AirPort Time Capsule (Model A1470) shuts down at least 4 times a day every day.
Does the LED in the TC turn off??
    Does it blink amber??
Can you connect a computer to it by ethernet and still get internet??
The requirement to re-enter info like password on the TV seems rather strange.
If the TC just stays Green and the effects are in the network and not apparently on the TC itself.. please try a full factory reset of the TC.
Please rename it.. Call the base station TCgen5.
Please set a different wireless name to both bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
Even set fixed channel for 2.4ghz and you can also try 5ghz although I doubt it will accept the value.
Make sure you use WPA2 Personal security with a suitable password, 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric.
If you get no improvement then yes you should return it as it seems to be faulty.
