Airport Extreme to stream music?

Currently, i'm pluggin my TM(time machine)-HD (Lacie Rugged) into my MB. The Lacie has USB/FW400/800 ports that can supply power to other devices. Thus I plug my Audio interface into the TM-HD(powered by this) thus everything essentially draws power from my MB.
And of course my speakers connect to my interface.
That's basically my audio setup now.
I'll be getting the airport extreme soon and I had wanted to setup the TM-HD to back up wirelessly via the USB dock on the AE. Am I able to also connect my audio interface to the TM-HD and my speakers to it and thus stream music wirelessly?
bottomline is: I'm just replacing my MB with the AE in the whole setup, can I essentially stream music wirelessly?
I think I might be missing something here but I can't put my finger to it.
Thanks folks!

You can stream to the HDTV if it will accept an ethernet connection, but if you need an analog or digital audio output to connect to your audio system, the AirPort Express is the only device that will allow you to do this.
You still have another issue in your proposed plan if the AirPort Extreme will handle your audio requirements and that is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme due to corruption issues. You can certainly try this anyway...many users do...and many users have corruption issues, so you might want to have a secondary backup plan in place to protect your data.

  • Using old Airport Express with new Airport Extreme to stream music

I recently purchased the newest Airport Extreme to replace my older Airport Express. I'm running OS 10.8.5. I like the speed of the new WIFI signal for streaming to Apple TV. No long waits or buffering interruptions while watching movies. I still want to use the old Airport Express to stream music from my iPhone to a stereo in another part of the house. I plugged in the Express module and it just flashes amber. Doesn't show up in Airport Utility either.

I suggest that you first perform a "factory default" reset on your old AirPort Express, and then, check out the following Apple Support article for configuring it for streaming.

how do i set up iPad and airport express to stream music to stereo without using internet connection.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.

  • Trying to set up new AirPort  Express to stream music

I just purchased Airport Express in order to use our home stereo system with our iTunes located on another computer. I am not techie at all but usually can follow the directions with no problem! It looked like all I had to do was plug the AirPort Express into the wall and hook the line out port to my speakers and it would pick up my wireless network. Well nothing has happened. I have read all the info in the discussion board but cannot find one that is exactly my problem. When I open AirPort Utility on my main computer it says it does not detect any AirPort wireless device. I have a cisco linksys router. All my other computers in the house work fine on this router so I know this is working. Do I need to purchase a AirPort Extreme?
Can anyone help me with very simple instructions as to what I need to do to get this to work?
    Thank you.

Hello Shookie43. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
By default, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) will perform as a wireless router. Which is not exactly what you would want in this situation. I am assuming that you want to use the other wireless router for Internet access and only use the AXn for iTunes streaming ... correct?
If correct, then the following would be the basic steps to configure the AXn to do so:
Either connect to the AXn's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AXn, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <enter the Network Name or select the existing wireless network from the drop-down menu>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Apple TV, Time Capsule (or Airport Extreme) and streaming movies without running iTunes?

I'm thinking of buying an Apple TV but as far as I know I'll need my computer on to run movies from my iTunes account, which is something I really don't want to do every time I want to watch a movie, just wondering if this can first of all be confirmed?
Also, If I buy Apple TV and an apple time capsule (or an Airport extreme connected to a HDD), can I stream movie files located on the time capsule (or HDD) to the AppleTV without having to turn on the computer and run iTunes?

Yes you need your computer on if you want to stream from its library, even if the library is on an external or network drive.
However any purchases you have made from iTunes can be stream from the iTunes Store at any time without your computer being on.

  • My original airport (used to stream music) no longer connects since I got a new airport to use as a router.

It continues to flash amber, and I cannot play music anymore through any device or computer. It will play if I unplug the router still, then the router airport will not work to use the internet until I unplug the music airport. I have interchanged them and still get the same problem. It's one or the other, but they don't seem to want to work together.

I would recommend that you start over and perform a "factory default" reset on both base stations. Once completed, set up the main base station for Internet access. When you have verified that you can gain Internet access with this base station, then configure the second AirPort for iTunes streaming using the following Apple Support article for the details.

  • Airport issues and streaming music

Hi all, after quite a bit of frustration with my AX, which I might add, worked well for years, I installed a NetGear wireless modem and am very happy with it.
One issue is that previously, when the AX connected with ethernet cable to my router, I was streaming music around the house, something I really enjoyed. This AX has now been removed.
I assumed that it was possible to connect the second AX to my new wireless network. (created with the new NetGear)
Not so, Airport utility still recognised the second unit and I proceeded to complete the process. But the AX would not re-start. Now, admittedly I only tried it once, but is it possible to still connect the second AX to my wireless network, and stream music, via AirTunes?
Appreciate any comments....am I trying to do the impossible?

    Ronald,
Have you reset the Airport Express?
Then try and join your new network.... which is now the NetGear...
I am running 3 Airport Express units to 3 different stereos and they all work fine. Even though I have a different Main Base station than you have, you should be able to "Join" your network.

  • Simplest way to connect my laptop to the airport express to stream music

what would be the simplest way to connect my airport express and my macbook so i can listen to the music i have on itunes on my stereo? Would it affect my purchased band with if i do it thru my wireless modem? can it be done without using cables? Too many questions, thanks!!

Configure Express via AirPort Utility to Join your existing wireless network. Plug the Express into an outlet near your stereo and plug the audio out from the Express into your stereo. You need a 3.5mm plug or optical cable to whatever is available on your stereo.
Would it affect my purchased band with if i do it thru my wireless modem?
Affect your wireless bandwidth? Yes, but it's still the most efficient way to stream. Affect your internet bandwidth? No.

    Yes.

  • TS1253 I connected my Airport Extreme Base (ABS) Station to FIOS router.

Printer Canon MF4100 is then connected ABS.  I was able to print
    when connected wirelessly to ABS
when connected direclty FIOS route via ethernet cable
However, unable to print connected wirelessly to FIOS. Why?

Can I use my Airport Extreme Base Station (the older 802.11b or 802.11g one shaped like a flying saucer, not the newer, boxed-shaped one) to extend the network?
Most likely not wirelessly, as very few non-AirPort are WDS-compatible. However, you could extend the network by connecting via Ethernet.
Also, side question: does Airtunes come with JUST the Airport Express or can I use the Airport Extreme to stream music wirelessly from my iMac desktop's iTunes to my stereo?
Sorry, but no. Only the AirPort Express and the Apple TV can stream audio.

  • Airport Express to extend network and stream music at the same time?

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme base station (primary wireless access point) and an Airport Express. Currently I connect my Hi-Fi to the Airport Express and stream music from iTunes, but I would like to also make use of its Ethernet port to connect other wired devices to my network. Is this possible; can it be used for both simultaneously? I've tried various configurations but not managed to achieve this.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have an AirPort Extreme(n) and AirPort Express(n), the ethernet port for the Express will be active if you "Enable ethernet client" during setup using AirPort Utility.
It sounds like you have either the "g" version of the Extreme or Express or both. Both devices must be "n" capable to use this option. If you don't see an option on the Wireless setup page of the Express to "Enable ethernet client", you have a "g" Express and this function is not available with your device.

  • Airport Express cuts off streaming music

I have an Airport Express 802.11n (2nd Generation)  Version 7.6.2 Firmware
I have configured my network to use my airport express to stream music from iTunes.  My music stops sporatically when streaming.  It eventually starts back up, then it stops again sometimes for as long as a minute.  FRUSTRATING.
The musis still plays on my computer, it's just something with the music stream.  Has anyone else encountered this?
The Airport express is configured to "Join Wireless Network" and the security is "WPA2 Personal"
I'm connecting to a Cisco Systems WAP AP610N with a wireless band of 2.4GHz and a Channel Width of 20 MHz
Standard Channel is:  6 which is 2.437GHz
    Any suggestions on why?

FYI, my final resolution was to sell it and buy another one.

  • IPhone 4 dropping streaming music using Airport Express

We've got Airport Express to stream music to the stereo. Using it from iTunes and Spotify on both iPhone and computer. iPhone regularly stops working. What's weird is that it isn't dropping the connection and continuing to play on the phone, but the content stops altogether and has to be restarted. Any suggestions?

I having the same problem from my iPhone 4.
But when I stream from my iPad, it just works...

  • Stream Music over iPhone from iTunes Server direct to Airport Express?

    Hi all
I have a wireless network supported from timecapsule which will be expanded via airport extress. I use airport express to stream music from my iTunes library to defined speakers via remote app on my iPhone.
Due to lack of diskspace on my MacBook Pro, I bought a Synology NAS to store all my music on it and use the iTunes server.
Unfortunately, there is obviously no app from Apple available to connect to iTunes server (via iPhone or iPad) select music to play and also the speakers to stream to!
    Thanks for your help!
    Regards, Jean-Claude

I think this is really disappointing especially since it seems to be able to stream from the Apple TV G1 to Airport Express devices. Also it's weird that you will be able to stream from the iPad to Airport Express devices including Apple TV G2 but the same thing is not possible from the Apple TV G2... Let's hope they'll change that but maybe they did it on purpose because the Apple TV G2 is streaming itself... This is really disappointing.
Also I recognized that music that is played via the home sharing on your Apple TV G2 doesn't include the ratings. Ratings are not transferred via home sharing. I don't think your playcount etc. will be updated as well. This is very disappointing as well. What do you guys think about that?

  • Airport Extreme and Cisco DPC3008 terrible Netflix Streaming

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, Originally released June 2011, and a Cisco DPC3008 modem on Charter.
My problem is that with my Airport Extreme hooked up directly to my modem according to a Netflix Tech there servers are only seeing about a 1.5 Mbs connection and the Netflix quality is terrible.  When I take the Airport out of the equation and connect directly to the Modem everything streams great and is in crystal clear HD.
I purchased a Linksys E1200 to test with and with that hooked up to the modem instead of the Airport Extreme Netflix streams perfect also.  So for some reason with the Airport Extreme my Netfilx quality is terrible but with other routers it is fine.
I have a 30 Mb connection and all other services work fine with the Airport Extreme hooked up.  I tested Hulu, HBO Go, and WatchESPN and they are fine.  Only Netfilx has the issue with the Airport Exterme.
Here is a link from DSL Reports with a person that has the same problem...
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28578294-Speed-Issues-airport-extreme-Cisco-DPC 3008
    Anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Just an update. I had my Airport Exterme unplugged all night. Plugged it in and did a factory reset, restored it to firmware version 7.5.2 and then updated each version up to the newest on it and now everything is working great. I am going to give it a few days and see what happens. Maybe something on the Airport Extreme got screwed up and being off all night reset it. Got me.
