Airport extreme, TV, printer and external HD setup????????

Here is what I would like to do:
Have one External HD, hook up to an Airport Extreme, use this HD as my main iTunes movie library. Use this library for my itunes on the G5, and Macbook such way I can access all my movies from either computer. Then stream either computer to the TV.
I also need to hook up an HP printer and my comcast internet to my network.
I read a lot of threads concerning problems with externalHD and Airport extreme. seems like the HD drops quiet a bit.
Are there better HD than others?
Can I have both HD and printer on a USB?
Is it going to be too much load on the network (itunes library, TV sreaming and internet conection)?
Can this system be reliable enough?
Right now my HD is firewired to my G5, my internet is on an Airport express netwrk and my printer is USB to my G5 (I am sharing with the macbook).
Thanks for your help.

That is possible, but not recommended as it can easily result in corruption of the music database if more than onechine accesses the database. If you consistently use A SINGLE machine to update the iTunes music, and all the other usit READ-ONLY, you may be OK.
Then stream either computer to the TV.
I also need to hook up an HP printer and my comcast

No problem there.

Some people have experienced problems with HDs and firmware 7.1
Are there better HD than others?
Not really. A good USB 2.0 disk will do.
Can I have both HD and printer on a USB?
Yes. Get an inexpensive powered USB Hub. D-link makes one that works well.
Is it going to be too much load on the network
(itunes library, TV sreaming and internet
conection)?
No.
Can this system be reliable enough?
Sure. I have a network with 2 AEs (one as a bridge), Apple TV, a USB Hub with printer and HD attached, another wireless net printer and two wireless notebooks (mac and PC). No e.
Right now my HD is firewired to my G5, my internet is
on an Airport express netwrk and my printer is USB to
my G5 (I am sharing with the macbook).
You can't use the firewire disk with the AE. USB only.
Thanks for your help.

  • Airport Extreme with Printer and HD

I am new to Mac and have been plugging along since Christmas trying to figure everything out. Right now what I am trying to do is set up my Airport Extreme 802.11n router with a USB hub so that I can plug a Western Digital 500gb My Book formatted in fat32 and an Epson printer. I plugged the USB hub into the back of the AE and then plugged the HDD and the Printer into the hub. The Epson printer works great but I can not get the HDD to work. When I go into the Airport Utility>Manual Setup>Disk it sees the HDD and tells me how much memory is on there and when I go into the file sharing tab I have enabled file sharing with disk password. Now from my understanding I need to use the Air Disk utility to access the HDD and when I click on that under the utilities folder both boxes are checked but there is no hard drive in the screen, nothing for me to click on. I have spent a couple of days researching the problem and can't seem to figure out the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nevermind I figured it out. I thought there would be a hard drive looking device under shared but it was the airport extreme. I am an idiot.

  • Airport Express to printer AND external hard drive?

Does anyone know if it's possible to split the usb port on the airport express, and backup wirelessly to an external hard drive, AND print wirelessly to a printer? Thanks!

The AirPort Express does not support a hard drive at its USB port, so the answer would be no. This would be possible on an AirPort Extreme.
You could connect several compatible printers to the AirPort Express, if you used a powered USB hub.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and External Hard Drives

Hi all. Bought my first Mac 2 days ago and am very impressed. Such a smooth transition from vista. Just working my way around it and very impressed.
However one minor problem. I have a Airport Extreme base station with a USB Hub and 2 identical Freecom External Hard drives connected. As expected both connected fine and are accessible They name themselves FREECOM HDD and FREECOM HDD (2).
My question how do i change the names of these to be more relevant to me?
I have already tried setup through airport utility. Obviously with 10 years working with windows i could do this with my eyes shut on PC. It is probably just as easy MAC please help......

Select a drive in the Finder and either press Enter or choose Get Info from the File menu and change the name. You may need to connect them directly to the computer instead of through the base station to do this.

So, is NTFS not compatible with the APEBS to share over the network? My time machine partition shows up, but not my NTFS partition.

i had a drive and it was formated to fat-32 and that worked. i got a new hard drive and formatted it to NTFS because i need to transfer files larger than that Fat-32 limit.

  • Vonage, AirPort Extreme Base Station, and Comcast

I just picked up an Airport Extreme Base Station, and wanted to use it to get my MacBook Pro on my home network. However, I can't get it to actually provide an network connection to the MacBook. In the Network pane of System Preferences, under the Network Status, AirPort has a yellow icon, and the following message: "AirPort is connected to the network HulkNet. AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."
    Here's my current setup:
Comcast > Cable Modem > LinkSys RTP300 > PowerMac, PC, AEBS
I have the "Distribute IP addresses" disabled on the AirPort, and the internet for the PowerMac & the PC work fine. In the network status of the RTP300, the AEBS is listed as having an IP address of it's own.
Any gurus out there that can help me figure this out? I just want to be able to access my home network from anywhere in the house!

    All,
I recently posted what I believe to be a similar/identical issue. See my post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1378849
I have not changed my AEBS to "Off (Bridge Mode)" yet, because everything currently 'works' but I continue to get the occasional "Double NAT" warning suggesting I switch the AEBS to bridge mode. When this happens, I lose connection to the internet and need to unplugged both the AEBS and my modem to re-establish a connection to the internet and the external HD I have connected to the AEBS.
My question for Jmiller1138, do you continue to get the "Double NAT" warning even when you changed your AEBS to "Off (Bridge Mode)"? I am hesitant to change my AEBS to bridge mode since I'm assuming I'll need to totally reconfigure my entire network (meaning both the AirPort Extremes, my wireless HP printer, and my firewalls on my PCs).
The ignoring of the warning (i.e. closing the AirPort Utility without updating the AEBS) is what triggers the need to reset my AEBS and modem. Not fun.
I guess I'll just need to bite the bullet and set the AEBS to bridge mode . . . yes?

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and 2wire Modem / Router

I have Yahoo DSL with a 2wire modem / wireless router combo. I have an iMac and a MacBook both running Leopard. I can't seem to get the Back to my Mac feature to work. I'm currently running the trial version of .Mac. I'd like to get a full .Mac account but I want to be sure I can utilize the Back to my Mac feature. If I were to bridge an Airport Extreme Base Station to the 2wire would that solve my issue with Back to my Mac. Additionally I like the idea of being able to plug a printer of external hard drive into the Airport Extreme.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I got it to work. I purchased the Airport Extreme Base Station and took the following steps which I found here http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-68141.html
First connect directly to the 2Wire with the Ethernet cable.
    Instructions from 2Wire:
    1. Clear the HomePortal to Factory State –can be accomplished two ways
    2. Go to http://homeportal/management
    3. Click on Resets
    4. Click on Reset to Factory State
    5. Click Continue
    6. Have customer press Hardware Reset button with paperclip (HG products only and BellSouth HWs)
    7. Have customer unbend a paperclip
    8. Have customer insert paperclip into recess for Hardware Reset button (outlined with Red circle) on back of HomePortal.
    9. Hold paper clip in for ten (10) full seconds
    Next steps:
    1. Go to http://homeportal/management again
    2. Click on Configure under Broadband Link
    3. Enter VPI 0 and VCI 35
    4. Click on Disable PVC Search
    5. Set Connection Type to Direct IP
    6. Click Submit/Save
    7. Have cu go to http://homeportal/management
    8. Click on Configure Services
    9. Have cu Uncheck Enable Routing
    10. Click Submit
    Airport configuration:
    1. Open the AirPort Admin Utility and select your Base Station.
    2. Click Configure and enter your password.
    3. Click the Internet tab.
    4. Choose PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) from the Connect using pop-up menu.
    5. If required by your ISP, enter your user name, password and service name in the appropriate fields. ( Your name and password is you full email including the @sbcglobal.net part and your email password)
    6. Click Update.
    7. After the base station restarts itself, quit the AirPort Admin Utility.
If that doesn’t work call apple and they should be able to help with the airport configuration.
Back to My Mac now works. Hope this helps someone else.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  How can I password protect certain files?

I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  I have it set up so my Macbook Pro and PC's in the house can access it.  i have some files that i would like to protect(sensitive personal info.).  Is there a way that can be done where as certain folders are password protected?  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Would a good workaround be to use disk utility to set up a password protected sparse image, of course being connected directly to the Mac, then connect the drive to the Airport Extreme?
Then, couldn't one use that drive and protected files as normal on the airport? It would just require one extra step of using a Mac to set things up first.
I disconnected my Airport so cannot check it out for myself.

  • Problems with printer and external HD connected via Time Capsule with Windo

    Hello everyone!
In January I bought an iMac 27 "(OS version: OS X 10.6.2) and a week ago a Time Capsule 1TB.
I connected the iMac and a laptop with Windows XP SP3 both via ethernet to the TC, and to the USB port of the TC a USB hub to which I connected a Canon iP4200 and a LACIE 500GB HARD DISK.
I reformatted the hard disk file system to Lacie Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and installed MacDrive 8 in the laptop.
Now (after formatting the HD), with the iMac everything works: internet connection via ethernet or wireless, printing via ethernet or wireless as well as hard disk connection via ethernet or wireless.
Laptop, instead, is only able to connect to the internet via ethernet or wireless while it isn't able to see and use printer and external hard drive, even though I installed AirPort Utility for Windows!
The laptop also detects the AirPort disk of the TC but if I enter the (correct) password I get an error message!..
Please, somebody help me, I do not know what to do!
    Thanks

Have you run Bonjour on the Win PC's? Do a search on the support page and there's a description on getting things up and running from a WinPC in a Mac environment.

I am not able to print to my usb airport extreme attached printer from my windows aptop or window desktop

Your post did not really provide any details on what you have done in the way of troubleshooting or printer software that you have installed, so we don't have much to go on here.
For starters though, you will not be able to print unless you have installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 on the PC(s) and run the program.
So, if you have not done this, that would be a good first step.

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station and Plugging in a telephone?

Hi all I currently have a Netgear Wireless Router & Phone Adapter WGR613VAL ,Im not happy with the coverage or speed. I have my telephone connected into the back of the Netgear ( Standard US Phone Jack ) . I see that this AirPort Extreme only has ethernet , whats my solution? Can you buy VOIP Phones with Ethernet connections? If so will I be able to put my carriers settings/SIP onto the AirPort or will / can I still need to use the Netgear just for my phone?

Welcome to the discussion area, apsimg!
+will there be any network degradation if I set it to further extend my wireless network given that they are so close?+
It's not a good idea to have two routers within 6 feet of each other both providing a wireless signal due to possible interference issues. Even if you find that the two devices do not interfere with each other, there's really nothing to be gained in terms of signal strength by having them both broadcast the wireless network.
If the Time Capsule were in the next room or down the hall, then it might make sense to set it up to provide for greater wireless coverage. If you have the Time Capsule connected to the AirPort Extreme using ethernet and you want more wireless coverage, you would not set it up to "extend", as this is only used if the devices are connecting using wireless only.
Connecting with ethernet, you would setup the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the same network name, security and password and configure the device as a "bridge".

  • Problem setting up printer for AirPort Extreme wireless printing

I have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n and I've connected my Canon MP240 printer to it via USB. However, my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.8.4) says the printer is "offline" when it is plugged into AirPort Extreme and turned on. When I try to add it as a new printer, it recognizes it as a "Nearby Printer" and asks me to download and install the software from Apple. It then searches for the software for about a minute and gives me this error message: "Can't install the software for the Canon MP240 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." I've tried directly downloading the drivers from Apple's website http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899 and from Canon's website http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_s eries/pixma_mp240#DriversAndSoftware but neither work.
HOWEVER, the strangest part is if I were to connect the printer to my MacBook Pro directly via USB, it recognizes the printer and I can print no problem. This leads me to believe the drivers have already been installed onto my computer. If anyone knows how to get around this issue I'd greatly appreciate the help.

  • Airport Extreme won't recognize external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've searched and search and tried everything, but my airport extreme refuses to recognize my external harddrive. I'm wanting to set it up so my time machine so it will back up automatically - basically a poor student's version of a time capsule. Please - I'm getting desperate - nothing I've found on-line has helped. Thanks!!!

I have just completed hooking up my airport extreme to my seagate external drive. I have the newer version mb763lla airport. After hooking everything up, I created a homebase network, and Initially my two windows computers would not recognize the drive, in my computer. I plugged a usb jump drive in to the router to check if the router required drives to be formatted fat32 and the jump drive worked, jump drives are formatted to fat32, so I knew my problem was the format of external drive. Then I knew I needed to format my drive to fat32, so I looked around the internet trying to find the best way to do so. What I discovered is that if you go to the website of your external drive, they generally have software to help you format your drive. Seagate has discwizard, and I noticed Western Digital has some too. I choose to format my drive with two partitions one fat32 and one ntfs. I was under the impression from some of the websites I visited that I would have problems with vista & fat32, so I used a windows xp computer to run the format software from seagate. I plugged the usb external 320gb freeagent seagate hard drive directly into the xp computer, to format it. After running the software I restarted my computer, and the drive worked, and I could now find the drive on both my xp and my vista computers. It did assign different drives, on the xp the drive is called y: on the vista the drive is called z: . Both computers can write or read to the fat32 partition of the drive.
