Airport Extreme - unable to secure access

I have an Airport Extreme base station (the white flying saucer model) connected to a DSL modem. This allows my internet connection to be shared amongst an Imac and 3 iBooks in my household. One of the iBook users is my son who has worked out how to bypass the security on my Airport Extreme. My reason for restricting his access is that he has repeatedly blown out my download limits and I want to block his access to the internet.
1. I was using WEP (to allow access from a Nintendo DS) and my son found out what the password was. Not entirely surprising.
2. Using Airport Admin Utility, I removed his airport card ID from the list of allowable devices. Next thing I know, his ID re-appeared in the list. This has happened 3 times, so no coincidence.
3. I changed the Admin password on the Airport Extreme base station and again removed his airport card ID from the list. It has re-appeared.
4. Lastly, I upgraded from WEP to WPA. He is still attaching to the network.
5. I managed to get access to his laptop on the weekend and started up Airport Admin Utility. To my surprise, it did not ask for a password and I was able to access all settings on the base station. This appears to be how he is reinserting his ID into the access control list.
Are there security issues with Airport Admin Utility? I am intrigued by how his laptop appears to bypass the security I have put in place.
How can I impose the restrictions on his access?
All iMacs and iBooks are running OS X 10.4.9 or 10.4.10.

Don,
Thank you for your reply. The article on WEP encryption is very interesting and I will use it when I use WEP.
The article on WPA indicates that an airport extreme card with software version 3.2 or higher should work. I think I have version 4.2 which came from the AirPortSW42.dmg which I obtained from the Apple website. So I am confused because it still doesn't allow me to connect using WPA.

  • How do I configure my AirPort Extreme as a wireless access point?  My cable modem goes to a router, and one of those ports goes to my AirPortExtreme.

I am about to hook up my airport extreme.  My cable modem goes into a router, and one of those ports will supply my airport extreme.  I was told by the Apple Store that I would need to configure my airport extreme as a wirreless access point.  How do I do this?

With sbcgobal I got a Gateway 2wire modem. What I would like to know is how do I set up my APE as remote?
Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this as few non-AirPort routers will work with AirPorts in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Airport Extreme will not secure wi-fi signal

I just had my AT&T DSL service activated, and I am trying to secure the wi-fi network using Airport Utility 6.2. My Airport Extreme is broadcasting the unsecured signal but I am completely unable to secure it.
Modem and router are hooked up correctly. I have to configure the base station for the unsecured signal to begin broadcasting. If I cancel the configure, the signal goes away completely.
So I configure the base station again, and I'm presented with a screen that reads "This Airport Extreme will create a network" and am presented with four fields: Network Name, Base Station Name, Password and Verify.
I enter a password and verify it, and am then given a screen to "Provide my PPPoE information I received from my ISP." I do that, and it spins for about a minute and says I am connected to the network I created. Except there is no wifi signal and no connection.
It has been like this for four days now. I am at my wit's end. ATT insists that the problem is not on their end. Any help anyone can give is appreciated. Thanks.

So to be clear - you have a DSL modem from AT&T, and want your Airport Extreme to broadcast this signal as well as route it?
You say you hooked up the modem and router correctly, are you able to get connection when plugging into the LAN port on the Airport Extreme?

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.
    Thanks.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.

  • AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) WiFi access point disappears but wired ethernet is ok

My AirPort Extreme SSID and access point "disappear" randomly from available WiFi networks. I had a 1st gen AirPort Extreme and never had this problem until earlier this year. I thought it might be a failing radio in the 1st gen unit so I used it as a good excuse to get a 5th gen AirPort extreme about 3 months ago. Same problem has been occuring; unfortunately it is random and I cannot get a handle on what/when/why it is happening.
For example, my iPhone 4S was connected to the network at about 1700 today and when I next checked the phone around 2115, no wifi connection and my network was not listed in the WiFi connections. The base station is away from other wireless devices (mouse, keyboard) and is about 10 feet from the nearest PC and monitor. Both printers are accessed via ethernet, not wifi. The strange and puzzling thing is that the PC, which is connected by ethernet to the AirPort Extreme, is still connected to the internet (I can browse, check email, newsgroups, etc.).
When I run the AirPort Utility, the base station is identified (AirPort Extreme 802.11n 5th Generation), there is an appropriate IP address, Version 7.6 firmware, and MAC address is listed. However, when I attempt to Continue or do a Manual Setup, I'm prompted for the admin password, the progress bar moves during 'reading from the Apple wireless device. Please wait...,' and then the utility reports "An error occured while tryong to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6722.
If I unplug, wait, and reattach the power to the base station, WiFi becomes available again. When the WiFi connection "disappears", the LED light is solid green.
Any insights are appreciated; please let me know other helpful information I can provide.
    Scott

I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts.
I bought an airport extreme n last week and plugged it in, hooked it up to my adsl router by Ethernet, configured it to set up a new wifi network and got the green light. I use an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Windows 7 PC with an N wifi adaptor.
The airport works fine for about 2 hours before the wireless network disappears without a trace. Green light remains on the base station and I can connect fine by Ethernet.
    "it just don't make sense"
    I hope it's not a windows-7-only thing, Apple.
PS. Updated firmware to the newest version, no difference.
Airport is near to a wireless phone so I set a specific wireless channel and frequency to prevent a clash. No change.

  • Airport Extreme Not Loading Secure Pages

I have two machines, a Macbook Pro connected by WiFi and a Mac Pro connected by Ethernet Cable to an Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is connected to a Cable Modem. The symptom is a failure to completely load a Secure page. A typical example was trying to make a donation to Wikipedia. The succesion of pages load OK until loading  https://paypal. The page load then hangs with 39 of 40 items loaded. However, some Secure pages load OK. I've also noticed a slowdown for all page loads, secure and non secure. These symptoms dissappear when I connect my machines directly to the Cable Modem via Ethernet cable. I've power cycled the Airport Extreme and the Cable Modem, and reloaded software onto the Airport Extreme with no change in symptoms.

  • Connected to Airport Extreme but no Internet access

    Weird deal.
Have an airport extreme coupled with an airport express for an extender.
Multiple devices - iMacs, macbook pros, iPhones etc.
Opened up a dell xps laptop and downloaded some files... Working fine.
Next thing, dell laptop is connected (or shows it is) to the airport extreme base station. However, it is showing no Internet access. On my iPhone or iMac, access is just fine. Pull up airport software and it shows the dell laptop connected too.
Idea on why dell cannot get through?
Maybe I should be on dell communities asking but thought I'd ask here first.

I was able to get the printer and my MacBook to resume communicating by reinstalling printer software and using the IP address for the printer during setup instead of using the printer name as before.  I also can adjust the settings on my Airport utility app by clicking on configure other and entering the IP address for the base station and password.  It still does not recognize the base station initially as it did before, but this is only an issue on my MacBook.  If anyone knows how to get things to automatically recognize each other again I would be grateful to know how to fix this.

  • Airport Extreme unable to connect to WPA network

I have an iBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 and a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router. The iBook connects well with the Netgear router using WEP encryption but using WPA Personal security I get a message that says "the wireless network does not support the requested encryption method."
The netgear technical support people advised me that it is a configuration issue and to contact Apple to make it work properly but the only information I found there was to update the airport card firmware.
I updated the firmware for the AirPort Extreme card to 3.90.34.0p.16 from the Apple website but that didn't solve the problem.
In addition I have a HP Photosmart wireless all-in-one where I experience the same problem.
If there are any suggestions, I would be forever grateful.

  • Airport extreme unable to connect to new router

We just received a new router from our cable company. The old router worked with our airport extreme just fine.  After hooking up the new router the airport extreme could not connect to it.  I received the following error "error occurred while trying to access the apple wireless device.  Make sure your connection is valid Error -6753" So then I tried to power off and reset the Airport extreme.  The button was stuck on my reset button.  I did figure that out and was able to click the button.  But even if I would hear the audible click when i held down the reset button the amber light never flashed rapidly?  Not sure what else to do.  I have turned off the modem, unplugged the router, plugged them back in. etc.   I just don't know where to go from here.
    Thanks!
    jodi

Were you able to get the AirPort Extreme to reset back to factory default settings, as LaPastenague detailed?
The amber light needs to flash rapidly for about 6-8 seconds during the process to indicate that the reset is taking place correctly. Once you release the reset button, the light will stay solid amber for 15-20 seconds or so, then change to slow blinking amber.
We are a bit confused as well, since in your first post you mention that you received a new router from the cable company, then later in the post, you mention that you have a (separate?) modem.
In the most recent post, you mention that you have a new modem. Is the new router from the cable company the same device as the new modem?  Or, do you have a new modem and another new router in addition to the AirPort Extreme?
Can you clarify on exactly what devices that you have? Make and model numbers would help. We know that you have an AirPort A1408.

  • I installed a new airport express and made it part of my existing home network...  now the PCs can't access internet through the airport extreme or the cisco access points

Everything works perfect with Macs, iPhone, iPads but I have 2 pcs that now can't access internet. The PCs connect to the airport and my other access points but no internet- The PCs sent an error of DNS

Yes, as we already said, it will do all of this if you have a good wireless signal reaching the bedroom.
Remember that an extender or repeater or whatever you want to call it can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.
The Ethernet signal that the Express delivers will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
If you have doubts, make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy.

  • Airport extreme base station cant access external hard drive

Just bought the new Airport extreme base station and I cant access the external hard drive. Any suggestions would be great. Everything worked great on the 5th generation airport extreme. But wanted to have the new speeds. But seems not to be worth it if I cant access my external hard drive. Please Help
Thank you in advance for any help.

I saw it in the finder menu but when I clicked on it nothing would happen. Then I went to my airport utility to see if that the extreme saw it.  It was in the disk section. But I can't access it. Today it completely disappeared from the utility but my laptop is still online. This thing is crazy.

  • My new Airport Extreme will not allow access to a Microsoft Exchange server

I just installed a new Airport Extreme at home and now I cannot access my work e-mail which is on a Microsoft Exchange Server.  If I go back to my old wi-fi Access Point my work e-mail comes in and out with no problems, but when I hook the Airport Extreme it keep saying the connection is bad and to check the e-mail username and password.

If you setup the AE wrongly, as a router when you already have a router, then you must bridge the AE. Apple nowadays reckon they should be top dog and force the AE to router mode.. unfortunately this is wrong on at least 50% of the setups and their support says double NAT doesn't matter.. well it does matter.
You can do a simple test.. traceroute 8.8.8.8 from terminal or network utility.
If you find two separate private IP addresses the AE is setup wrongly and it must go to bridge mode.
Eg.. here is mine.. you will note there is hop 1, the main router.. 192.168.2.254 and the next hop is internet IP.
What you want to avoid is 10.0.1.1 and then 192.168.1.1 or any other combo of private IP addresses.
If the AE is setup correctly and there is only a single private IP in the traceroute then you have a different issue.
The AE is blocking the ports required for you to access your mail.
You will need to setup manual port forwarding to get this working. There is no firmware fix as this issue is in every firmware for the AC version AFAIK, but certainly if you are trying on previous firmware check for upgrade.
Port forwarding check what ports are required..

  • Airport Extreme Base Station as Access Point/DHCP relay

Hi there, I am getting overly frustrated with both the hardware and its doc, so I figured I'd ask here...
Basically, I have a DSL modem that is also a router and wireless router (non-Apple, Westell) setup upstairs. What I would like to do is be able to use an AE to extend my network: the AE would be connected wirelessly to my network and provide ethernet ports for appliances in my basement... I have googled all over and only could find vague answers (either "sure you can" or "use bridge") but nothing detailed... I can't believe this cannot be done, does anyone have recommendations or detailed info?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the discussions, vwillers!
The AirPort Extreme can "extend a wireless network", but only if that network has been created by another Apple(n) base station. You won't be able to configure it to "join" your network and have the ethernet ports active.
The Airport Express(n) has a very nice feature called ProxySTA. In brief, this allows the AirPort Express to "join" virtually any wireless network according to the article below. By checking the "enable ethernet clients" box, the ethernet port will be active. You could connect a simple switch to the ethernet port on the Express if you need more ports at the "remote" end.
Check the attached article for more info on the ProxySTA feature.

  • Airport Extreme, logging and security

    Hi all,
bought yesterday a Airport Extreme Base station, which I share with my preeeecious (MacBook) and some ugly PCs.
As I'm a bit paranoid, once everything was setup (1.5 min at most, thanks Apple), I tried to do an "Internet Scan" and noticed port 53 was left open on the router... My previous router was completely stealth and prefered that. Is it normal?
Second thing, while with my previous router I could see "intruder attacks" logs, the AE seems to show only "internal activity" in the logs.
As I have the activity led always blinking (set the config to have the led to blink on activity) and I checked to see if it was internal or WAN activity, would be really curious to see logs of what is happening between my router and the Internet.
    Anybody knows?
    Thanks,
    Ka.

    Thanks for your reply.
Maybe they "have" to leave Port 53 open, on the other hand prefered to have it Stealthed like my previous router was doing. Unfortunately, after three years of service, decided to take a rest and so thought about buying the AE, which, till now works pretty well.
    My only concerns are:
why decide to leave ports as closed instead of Stealth?
Closed, you're saying "I'm here but I don't talk to you", stealthed you don't reply at all, as if you weren't there. Safer I would say.
Second concern, although probably nothing serious, is the activity light. As I already said, I have a cable modem and maybe it's normal for the WAN light (and therefore the front led) to blink without a rest but it's a bit annoying when you know there is no local activity.
I liked the idea of seeing it blinking when there was really something happening on my LAN... Well, in case it's normal that router and modem talk continously, without a second of interruption, I'll deal with it.
BTW, contacted support and they told me that the router is also accessible for config via Web... Like other routers.
Never managed to get to the config page... Is it me or also you?
    Thanks again,
    Ka.
