Airport extreme uses its ip when forwarding ports

Ive set the extreme to forward port 21
the trouble is that the ip that the client is forwarded as is the airports external ip rather than the connecting external ip
In other words when a server on the net with ip 200.200.200.200 tries to connect to the ftp server the IP the FTP server sees is the airports external IP
This makes it impossible to filter access by IP
Is there something Im doing wrong ?

thats unfortunate
every other router Ive tried on the market works the "other" way and forwards the actual client ip
I wouldn't be surprised if there was an RFC that covered it
time to send the extreme back

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?

You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience.

  • How do you upload firmware to Airport extreme with the following message: This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. I'm using airport utility 6.0

The airport extreme at my parent's house has not had its firmware update in some time and it keeps dropping the internet connection and needing to be reset.
I went to update firmware and opened up airport utilities (I'm running airport 6.0 on Mountain Lion, 10.7.4).  Everytime I open the airport utility I get the following message: "
This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
I've followed the link and tried to update firmwares but none are available and the print says that airport utility will look to see if firmware are available and load them as necessary when prompted by user.
One link said the only way to solve this problem is open up Airport Utility 5.6. I tried to do this, but 5.6 is not supported on Mountain Lion and couldn't be opened up.
I'm getting the exact same message on my other computer, a Mac Air.
So basically, can't download new firmware and am stuck with a ****** airport extreme that needs to keep being reset, a factory reset, in order to use the internet, but then continues to give me the same message.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to connect Brother printer to Airport Extreme using USB

Hi, I recently bought a Brother HL-2270DW printer, which has 802.11 b/g wireless capabilities.  My airport extreme (2008 model) is set to 802.11 n (5 ghz), so I can't set-up the printer wirelessly to the airport extreme without changing to 802.11 b/g.  Instead I'm fine hooking up the printer to the airport extreme using a USB.  When I first turn on the printer, I can print from my Macbook, but after a few minutes, the printer goes offline and has to be turned off/on.  When I try to Open Printer Utility, there is a connection error.  I have the right driver installed, and I can print fine for a few minutes after turning on the printer, and all the time when the printer is connected to the Macbook directly using the USB.  I would like to use the printer by connecting it to the airport extreme using the USB or Ethernet.  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks,

Please explain exactly what you're experiencing that leads you to claim that.
The current firmware of the TiVo Premier is easily confused about whether it's connected to the Internet or not.  In my experience, a TiVo unit will quickly regain its senses and decide that it really is connected.

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

I am trying to update my Airport Extreme. I go into the Airport Utility and this is the message attached I get when clicking on it.
"This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." That;s it.
I guess I can hard reset it, but this seems weird. Any advice would be nice.
    Thank you.

  • Airport Extreme - possible DHCP issues on UTP ports?

I have a recent (late 2012) iMac which has been consistently connected to my Airport Extreme via UTP with no issues until recently. The Airport Extreme is connected to my single port Motorola 5101 Bigpond Cable Modem.
Connected to the Airport Extreme via UTP are the iMac and a Lacie 4TB NAS media server. There are generally multiple devices connected wirelessly (iPhone, iPad, PS3, XBox) again with no issue.
I have a PC connected to an Airport Express at the other end of the house (PC has no wireless card) and the Express and Extreme are bridged with a common SSID.
Saturday night the "house network" occasionally lost wireless (iPhone switching to 3G) but after resetting the Extreme and the iPhone this seemed to settle down and has been working fine since then (4 days prior to this post).
Later on the Saturday night my iMac lost internet connectivity and resetting the Airport Extreme and resetting the Motorola 5101 did not help. Eventually rebooted the iMac and the Extreme and the 5101 and eventually (after a few minutes) internet connectivity was restored. (Error was "no IP address" and Airport Utility could not see either the Extreme or Express). Connectivity was restored by first turning on WiFi on iMac which immediately got an iP (10.x.x.x) allocated and then after a few minutes the UTP link also came up and remained up when WiFi was turned off.
The iMac has since "lost internet connection" around 3 times in total and a similar process to the above has not always restored connectivity – i.e. doing all the above worked some of the times and did not work others.
When this problem is happening on the iMac UTP connection there are no issues with wireless devices getting an IP allocated.
I am now running the iMac on WiFi with the UTP cable removed. Today I will try a new UTP cable between the iMac and the Airport Extreme to see if there is perhaps some intermittent cable issue.
The Airport Extreme and Airport Express (both a few years old) are running 7.6.4 firmware. I had recently setup timed access for a few wireless devices and also trialled the "guest wireless account" but these were set up around 1 week prior to the recent issues occurring. I have now removed both of these so that the Apple network devices are back to the settings they had which worked fine for years (albeit with different firmware versions over this time).
My diagnosis is that it seems that there is a problem with IPs being allocated by DHCP to devices connected to UTP ports but not over wireless. The only thing that seems to contradict this is that the Lacie NAS drive which is UTP connected (to UTP port 3) seems to still work and be accessible without issue.
So am also wondering if there is some intermittent iMac issue with the UTP port or with the cable. Will change the cable today as mentioned above to confirm or otherwise.
Any advice on further diagnostic processes and/or thoughts on Airport Extreme issues (hardware or firmware) etc would be appreciated. A search of the forums did not show anything similar but my search was not super-extensive.
Thank you for any help anyone can provide.
    Andrew

In the end after LOTS of troubleshooting and testing - and WAY too much frustration Apple - this issue has proved to simply be what I assume is a bug in the Automatic network location management under Mavericks and I had this issue to a lesser degree with 10.8.5.
I have now setup a "Home" new network location and my connection has been 150% stable ever since.
So nice to not need to reboot my Mac 7 times a day or more after several weeks of significant frustration.

  • How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?

How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?
I have an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme and I can access it just fine through Finder.  I would like to be able to keyboard navigate to it in an efficient manner.  I tried to use the "Go to the folder" feature but was unable to.
I had tried dragging the drive to the Network folder but the shortcut it created does not lead to the drive's contents...it seems to lead right back to the parent directory:
I hope I explained the question well.  Thank you for all of your help and time in tending to my inquiry.

Cant you set up "back to my mac" then go to finder preferences and put a check mark under everything under the shared location. Also set up back to my mac on your airport extreme.

  • I bought an Apple Airport Extreme used and it did not come with any software disks. how would make it work without the software disk?

Bought an Apple Airport Extreme used and it did not come with any discs. Do i need any discs? or is there another way to setup this airport without using a software disc?

You can download the setup manual and software that you need.
Look on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme for the Model Number.  It's A.......  something.
Post back with the model number and the exact operating system you are running on your Mac or PC.

  • Macbook Pro cannot configure AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility

    Hi all,
I can't get my macbook pro's airport utility to connect to my airport extreme, and hard reset doesn't seem to work either. However, the airport extreme still functions properly... just doesn't allow me to reconfigure it.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open AirPort Utility.
--> my AirPort Extreme router shows up with a green light (it's working).
--> Information displayed includes "AirPort Utility found an AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet)", with correct-looking gateway and IP information (version 7.2.1)
    2. Click "Continue"
--> Screen shows "Reading base station configuration..." with a little spinning icon.
    3. Wait 3 minutes.
--> During this wait, the green light stays lit on the router, my wireless connection does not drop, and the icon next to "Reading base station configuration..." continues to spin.
    4. Popup dialog appears: "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)". The AirPort extreme is sitting 2 feet from my MacBook Pro, connected only by wireless internet.
At this point, I wonder whether hooking it up with an ethernet cable would work better. So I did the following:
    1. Turn off Macbook Pro Airport wireless card.
    2. Connect an ethernet cable from the laptop to the 2nd port of the Airport Extreme
    3. Wait 60 seconds for DHCP etc.
    4. Close the Airport Utility (from the last test)
    5. Open the Airport Utility again
    6. My Airport Extreme router is again displayed, the same information is present as before.
    7. Click Continue
--> "Reading base station configuration..." message with spinning icon appears again.
    8. Wait 3 minutes. During this time, as before, the green light on the router stays lit, and nothing much seems to happen. I ran a "ping google.ca" from a terminal window just to verify that my internet stayed connected during this process, and the pings all responded fine.
    9. Again, an error popup: "An error occurred while reading the configuration. Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
At this point, I decided it might be a good idea to do a hard reset. I pressed and held down the tiny button on the back of the Airport Extreme for 6 seconds then released... no visible result. Green light still on. Then I tried for 11 seconds. Still no result, green light still on. I restarted the router, waited for the green light to come back on, and tried again with 6 seconds then 11 seconds again. STILL no result.
I can't think of anything else to try. Any suggestions?

The Windows "Airport Setup" version you need for the Airport Extreme N base station is not really available for download - but you can get it if you are up to following this procedure:
    1. download "AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 for Windows" from Apple's web site
    2. use a Winzip utility to extract the contents of the file you downloaded (called Airport521update.exe) to another folder.
    3. the contents of that folder should include four files - applesoftwareupdate.msi, apsetup.msi, apsetupadmin.exe, and bonjour.msi
    4. go to All Programs -> Accessories. Right click on the "Command Prompt", select to "run as administrator", and click continue when Windows asks for your permission to run this command.
    5. in the command prompt window, type and execute the command
    msiexec /i pathto_folder_of_files_youdownloaded\apsetup.msi /qb ap50isinstalled=1
This method simply forces the installer into thinking Airport 5.0 is already installed, thus letting the installer complete its job of installing a full working copy of the updated version.
This procedure also installs Bonjour for Windows, which will simplify the task of configuring on the PC any printer connected to the Base Station.

  • Sharing Internet via Airport Extreme using a USB wireless modem

I have had to go to NextG access using a USB modem (only option). We previously succesfully had the second iMac sharing the internet connection on an ethernet-connected wireless service. Now, I cannot get the other iMac to share the connection, because there is no option to choose the USB modem.
Another problem is the USB modem is top-dog - it won't connect unless I turned off anything else using anything remotely looking like wireless (even when I have my bluetooth phone connected to another USB hub). I can connect to the NextG network after disconnecting everything else and THEN reconnect, but I just can't get the Internet sharing going. I have also had the iMac freezing, demanding a power-off-power-on (unheard of in my experience!).
Is there any remedy for the Internet sharing at all? Configuring a different channel or something on Airport? Using one of the other config options?
I think there are something like USB-to-Ethernet adaptors (pretty costly here in Australia) and don't want to shell out for one if it doesn't work. Same with a third-party router. I also wondered if I should just forget about using Airport completely and run a few metres of crossover cable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Steven, I know this question has been answered and is a couple of months old but I think you may be able to help with my set up? I have a Thomson speedtouch 510 v6 modem router provided by Karoo (UK). My other Belkin N modem router has just bust [again] so the Speedtouch is my old faithful backup device. Now, i've never been able to get on ichat with the Belkin as its a mimo n speed and this is apparently not compatible; So i'm now on ethernet with the st510 and have just set up ports for ichat thanks to a thread called http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2719419&#2719419.
What I want to know from you (because I really need a wireless router to get me off this ethernet support system and back on airport) is how you're getting on with the st510 / airport extreme combo now and can you use ichat on it? If so does your connection doctor say full cone in network settings or something else? As I say, I really want to use ichat and have never been able to in 3 years of owning my Macbook Pro. Hope to hear back from you Steven. Regards Steph

  • Airport Extreme used as access point. External disk does not show up in Finder

The title pretty much sums it up. I'm using my Airport as just an access point. I connected an external disk to it. The disk shows up in the Airport Utility, however I cannot connect to it because my Airport has never shown up in Finder. I went to preferences and checked Connected Servers, still no go. Any advice?

    A few things to check:
The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or FAT32
Since the USB port on  the AirPort Extreme is under powered, you almost always have to use a powered USB hub when connecting a hard drive, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
When locating the disk on your Mac, open Macintosh HD or the Finder and look for the AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon and a folder will appear to the right representing your drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop

  • Connecting iMac to Airport Extreme using ethernet

OK, I feel like and idiot! Please help!
I bought an Airport Extreme so I could connect my iMac directly via ethernet and send a wireless signal out to an iBook and a Windows laptop. I connected the ethernet cable from the iMac to the Airport Extreme, but I cannot connect via ethernet. Also, no green light comes on when I connect the cable (in the LAN <...> port).
This seems like it should be so simple, but I can't find any help on this!

don't know if you are in the US or not but shared (IP/internet connection) doesn't seem to work unless you choose US in the settings as the country where you will use the base station.
i have spent the last 3 days pulling my hair out and trying to get my airport extreme to work with no luck. wizard, manual settings.. nothing worked. i could not get 'shared public IP address' to work.. no internet unless i used bridged mode and then only on the machine with the direct ethernet connection to the base station. yesterday i had given up and i went to the store and purchased a D-Link GigE wireless router (that i'm taking back today, unopened).
I decided to give it one more try to no avail... but just on a fluke i decided to switch the 'country to be used in' to US instead of Canada (where i live) and BOOM... went through the wizard amazingly everything worked fine!!! i couldn't believe my eyes.

  • Airport Extreme: PEAP authentication failure when NAT is enabled

Setup: Airport Extreme firmware 5.6, Windows Admin Utility 5.2
Airport's WAN port connected to an internal network with Windows 2003 IAS RADIUS server; Airport's LAN port disconnected.
Windows XP client (using Microsoft zero-configuration client)
client and server set up to use PEAP authentication
If I set up the Airport in bridge mode (uncheck the "Distribute IP Addresses" box in the Network setup tab), the client can authenticate correctly and can obtain an IP address from a DHCP server on my internal network.
If I check the "Distribute IP Addresses" box, select "Share a single address with DHCP & NAT" and the 192.168.1.1/24 address range, the client can no longer authenticate. I haven't changed anything else on either the Airport or the RADIUS server.
Network traces taken on the wired (WAN) and wireless side of the Airport show that the first few exchanges of the EAP handshake go through fine, but the server's reply to the client's "TLS Hello" message are being blocked by the Airport. Up to that point, I don't see any significant difference between the exchanges with NAT enabled or disabled; it's just that the Airport passes the server's message to the client correctly when NAT is off and blocks it when NAT is on.
