AirPort Extreme vs 2WIRE

I just got my new MacBook 2 days ago, I have a 2WIRE router and haven't been able to connect wirelessly. I have tried absolutely everything (putting $ before te password, making it a public net, installing the AirPort updates...) Nothing seems to work, I just can't conect to the wireless network.
Any ideas?

I used to be able to connect to my 2Wire and then after power outage my macbook willnot connect. Did you get a fix for your 2Wire connection problem?

  • Airport extreme with 2wire

I currently have DSL through ATT using a 2Wire modem. It is connected via ethernet to my Intel IMac. I would like to extend the range of my WiFi using an AP Extreme for the remote. Is it possible and how should I go about setting it up? My APE is an old version 802.11g.
    Thank You

I believe this is what I am trying to do as well. I just moved to another town. I had a simple cable modem, which I then created my airport network. My new home system (AT&T U-verse) came with a 2WIRE wireless gateway. I tried connecting my AE to the network via Airport Utility in order to print & use iTunes wirelessly. My "Weirport" disappeared and the green light is on, so I thought it had worked. Now the program I'm running on my eMac (yes...) and MacBook Intel Core-duo freeze when I try to print. I haven't even begun to add iTunes via Airport Express.
    Extreme - model A1143
    Express (2) - model A1084
    help?
PS - the extreme is connected to an ethernet port in the back of the router. One printer is connected to an ethernet port on the extreme and the other is connected to the USB port on the extreme.

  • Is it easy to hook Airport Extreme to 2Wire Gateway?

Currently using just the 2Wire 2701 gateway supplied by ISP(Bell Canada Sympatico) and have constant issues with signal dropping out and not enough range.  Have looked at setting up a WAP but will need to buy another router to do so and due to the recent switch to the Apple ecosystem(3 ipads, iPod touch, iPhone 4S and Macbook Air all in the last 18 months) I am almost sure it will be easier to set up an Apple system.
What I want to do is continue to have the 2Wire Gateway as the DSL modem, have it sign in to the ISP and hook the Extreme to the Gateway to act as the router(have done some research and think the 2Wire has some limitations handling the traffic on the router). To ensure strong signal at the other end of the house, I am also thinking I want to use an Express to extend the signal.  Due to a large number of devices hooked to the router, I would also need a device to add ethernet ports to the Extreme(Control4 controller, Control4 amplifier, PogoPlug, desktop computer, blueray player and a line wired to wall to allow wired hook up to base router at other end of the house - this is where I would put the Express)
I have read and understand how to set this up with linksys routers but suspect the Apple Way may be far less complicated.
Please comment and if possible tell me step by step how to get to my desired configuration.
House is single story with full basement, DSL line comes into a closet that houses all of the items listed, closet is closer to west end of house in the basement, approximately a 1600 square foot.  At any given time there are 3 laptops, an iphone, a blackberry, 2 iPads and a ipod touch as well as the wired items hooked to the network as well as an Apple TV.
    Thanks for any help.

What you are proposing is basically a roaming network configuration and works quite well for blanketing a house for Wi-Fi coverage.
Please take a look at the link I provided and if you have any additional questions, please post back. In a roaming network, all routers are interconnected by Ethernet. The "main" router will provide the routing (NAT & DHCP) services and all others would be configured as bridges. Each base station would have a unique base station name, but all would use the same Network Name or SSID, and security type. This way any wireless client can literally roam between base stations and still be on the "same" network.
FWIW, I have this set up at my 2-story home. The only difference is that I get my broadband via cable and not DSL. In my situation, the "main" base station is on the 1st floor where the modem is and I have a second base station on the 2nd floor to provide Wi-Fi coverage up there. Both are interconnected by Ethernet as the house is completely wired. Again, I can walk my MacBook to/from either floor and still be connected to the same network.

  • 10.4.8 and Airport Extreme - wireless con. not showing up on boot up

Ever since I installed 10.4.8, in order for my 2WIRE connecttion to show up in the "Internet Connect" drop menu on my desk top, I have to check off the "Internet Robustness" setting first, and only then will my airport extreme locate 2WIRE and connect.
I've engaged - and disengaged to see if it made any difference - the preference for "enable interference robustness in the Airpor>options pane. Made no difference. It's not a huge deal, but I wonder why the change. Any ideas?

Could be that a combination of the last OSX 10.4 security update and also
the AirPort Extreme updates have some effects on these subtle or not so
subtle differences in how the system works, now. Mine occasionally won't
work correctly with my desktop iMacG4 unless the Robustness setting is
turned on; and I have the nearby option to choose a wired connection
through the AEBS on the wall by my desktop computer, too. My iBook
seems to mostly just work; unless there is an AEBS or IP/DSL issue.
That kind of problem never used to happen and I'd just lose the wireless
without any understandable reason; at least now I know interference rob-
ustness setting appears to make a difference when it unexpectedly quits,
I have at least one more thing to toggle to see if I get it back; before I
start in on the DSL modem or other settings inside the AirPort Setup Utility.
The last thing if it does not work, is unplug the AEBS and/or ADSL unilt.
But, if you use a small straightened paperclip in the reset hole, you'd
have to check and rechoose settings in the AEBS; as it goes default.
Seems to me, once I uploaded to the AEBS from the iBook that runs
OSX 10.4.x, it was acting funky; but for awhile since another update
was done, it seems to work OK. Since the odd behavior messed with
the iMacG4 (10.3.9) I more often use it via ethernet from AEBS. The
iBook sees the wireless better than the iMacG4. Since both of mine
have Extreme wireless cards, I changed the AirPort's 802.11 to /g only.
That helped a bit and the desktop Mac on wi-fi doesn't drop as much.
I see no real answers to "fix" this; but there is some incidental evidence
that some newer spec wireless base stations may be coming soon to
an authorized reseller or through the authentic online source. Perhaps a
new answer is out there, in new hardware and software. I hope an update
will fix these little issues; I've had one AEBS for about three years and
it used to just work fantastically with OS 9.2.2 and standard airport, with
    dialup. Then I brought in Jaguar in the machines I had then, and Panther;
plus Tiger, and now two other Macintoshes plus a spare AEBS.
    Cross fingers?!

  • Do I need Airport Extreme???

    Hello,
I am setting up a wireless network to stream my itunes and netflix.
I am going to buy a couple Apple TV units for around the house.
    I already own a 2wire router/modem from ATT.
Is there any benefit to picking up an Airport Extreme since it will just have to plug into my 2wire anyway?
Should I pick one up??? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Bob,
I've been reading your responses to various questions regarding the AirPort Extreme and 2Wire from AT&T and they have been very, very helpful and informative.  However the one answer I didn't see from you was the one asked above (?) :
But if the 2wire is limited to g, will that mean my airport extreme will be limited to g also???
I only bring this to your attention because I too would like to know how/if I can expect N speeds from my AirPort Extreme if I connect it to my AT&T 2Wire modem with wifi 'off'.
If the answer is yes then I'll be at the apple store in two shakes getting an AirPort Extreme.
    Thanks regardless of the answer.

  • Airport Extreme works with ethernet but i CAN'T ADD IT TO MY WIRELESS ?

I'm able to set up airport extreme with ethernet but for some reason i can not add it to my wireless network. Why is this ? I cant figure it out.. by now im connected hard wired airport extreme and 2wire modem is working fine.
Yesterday i was able to do it without the ethernet cable and it was succesfuly joined to my wireless network but it went amber color maybe cause it was disconnected by accident.
    Any suggestions? or solutions?

Same here. I have clearwwire and my airport extreme base station was working fine until 3 days ago. My computer cannot find the base station; tried everything. I can get internet if I connect clearwire via ethernet port. What gives? All I get is the blinking amber light. Is it just broken?

  • Airport Extreme Base Station and 2wire Modem / Router

I have Yahoo DSL with a 2wire modem / wireless router combo. I have an iMac and a MacBook both running Leopard. I can't seem to get the Back to my Mac feature to work. I'm currently running the trial version of .Mac. I'd like to get a full .Mac account but I want to be sure I can utilize the Back to my Mac feature. If I were to bridge an Airport Extreme Base Station to the 2wire would that solve my issue with Back to my Mac. Additionally I like the idea of being able to plug a printer of external hard drive into the Airport Extreme.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I got it to work. I purchased the Airport Extreme Base Station and took the following steps which I found here http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-68141.html
First connect directly to the 2Wire with the Ethernet cable.
    Instructions from 2Wire:
    1. Clear the HomePortal to Factory State –can be accomplished two ways
    2. Go to http://homeportal/management
    3. Click on Resets
    4. Click on Reset to Factory State
    5. Click Continue
    6. Have customer press Hardware Reset button with paperclip (HG products only and BellSouth HWs)
    7. Have customer unbend a paperclip
    8. Have customer insert paperclip into recess for Hardware Reset button (outlined with Red circle) on back of HomePortal.
    9. Hold paper clip in for ten (10) full seconds
    Next steps:
    1. Go to http://homeportal/management again
    2. Click on Configure under Broadband Link
    3. Enter VPI 0 and VCI 35
    4. Click on Disable PVC Search
    5. Set Connection Type to Direct IP
    6. Click Submit/Save
    7. Have cu go to http://homeportal/management
    8. Click on Configure Services
    9. Have cu Uncheck Enable Routing
    10. Click Submit
    Airport configuration:
    1. Open the AirPort Admin Utility and select your Base Station.
    2. Click Configure and enter your password.
    3. Click the Internet tab.
    4. Choose PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) from the Connect using pop-up menu.
    5. If required by your ISP, enter your user name, password and service name in the appropriate fields. ( Your name and password is you full email including the @sbcglobal.net part and your email password)
    6. Click Update.
    7. After the base station restarts itself, quit the AirPort Admin Utility.
If that doesn’t work call apple and they should be able to help with the airport configuration.
Back to My Mac now works. Hope this helps someone else.

  • 2wire and airport extreme

I have a 2wire modem for att uverse, and I want to turn it into simply a modem only so I can use a airport extreme base station.
I talked to a "tier 2" tech support rep at u-verse who said there is no way to do it, and that the 2wire router has no bridge mode.
However, I found these instructions online. (http://www.ehow.com/how5160159put-wire-bridge-mode.html) Does anyone know if the instructions seem legit? Are there other people out there just simply using the 2wire as a modem only, and using an airport extreme? Also for those who are doing this, I'm curious what the benefits are. (other then sticking to all Apple products.)
    Thanks

Here's how to configure the AirPort Extreme using a Manual Setup option:
It would be a good idea to first "hard reset" the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) to start fresh. Hold in the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly, hold another second or two when you see this, then release.
If you want to configure the AEBS using wireless, you'll need to log on to the default network that the AEBS provides, something like +Apple Network xxxxxx+. Click the Airport icon at the top of the computer screen and look for this network. There is no security, so it will be easy to log on.
I prefer to configure devices using an ethernet connection instead of wireless. If you want to use this method, connect a spare ethernet cable directly from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS. You can disconnect the ethernet "umbilical cord" if you wish after the device is configured.
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2 Wire router to the WAN port on the AEBS. This will be a permanent connection.
Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
_Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons_
AirPort Extreme Name = Your choice
AirPort Extreme Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    Set Time = Automatically
    Time Zone = Your choice
    _Click the Wireless tab_
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Wireless Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    _Click the Internet icon_
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings. Don't worry when the AEBS "disappears" from AirPort Utility. Close AirPort Utility and the AEBS should restart and you should have a green light in 20-25 seconds. If you used the ethernet setup method, you can disconnect the ethernet cable between your computer and the AEBS.
Now you can click the Airport icon at the top of the computer screen and log on to your new network.

  • 2wire wireless- Airport Extreme- ethernet connection to iMac - how?

I have AT+T's DSL router that has wireless capabilities (802.11g, not n). I'm trying to use the new (802.11n version, although I'm not using n for this obviously) airport extreme to extended my wireless network to give me a wired access point to my old iMac (no wireless card).
So far the best I can do is get the airport extreme on the wireless network with a green light, but I can't get a wireline connection to land on this network. I'd even be ok with the airport extreme was a router that made the wired ports on a different network that would then route out to the wireless network.
When I connect a wired device to the airport extreme, it comes up with a 169.254.94.121 address. The wireless network is 192.168.1.x. The airport extreme does get it's 192.168.1.68 address on the same network as the 2wire. I've even forced my iMac into having an 192.168.1.80 address, but it can't ping the airport extreme's 192.168.1.68 address, so obviously the airport extreme isn't behaving how I would like. I even fired up WireShark on the connection, but it looks like the airport extreme won't even talk to it in any way; I was hoping to find the IP address on the wired side of the AX.
Basically I'm trying to use the airport extreme completely backwards from the usual setup. Wireless to wired instead of wired to wireless.
    Here's what I have:
Airport Extreme - Join a wireless network, security is WPA2, and it's on the network (as seen by 2wire)
Can I get the wired connections on the airport extreme to be an extension of the wireless network or even as another NAT routed connection?
DSL router (2wire) that sends wireless-> Airport Extreme (join a wireless network) -> wired connection to iMac.
Why am I doing this? No phone line connection even close to my iMac.

I had to jump straight into the manual configuration, but it does show Wireless mode: Join a wireless network. And the 2wire shows it as a device connected to that network.
    Connect using: Wireless Network
Ok, I'm still a bit confused. On the AEBSn, the only options available for Connect Using (found on the Internet > Internet Connection tab) are: Ethernet or PPPoE; For Wireless Mode (found on the AirPort > Wireless tab) are: Create a wireless network, Participate in a WDS network, Extend a wireless network, or Off. Unlike the AirPort Express or Time Capsule, there should NOT be an option for "Join a wireless network."
So at this point I think it is extending my wireless network. I just can't figure out how to get the wired ethernet ports to be on that same network.
Regardless, when configuring for "Join a wireless network," the base station would join as a wireless client, not as a means to extend the wireless range of the exiting wireless network. Since this is not the way to set up a WDS, the Ethernet ports on the AEBSn would not be enabled for sharing Internet connectivity.
WDS is not an option as the 2wire router doesn't seem to be able to handle that.
Then it appears that there will not be an option to create a WDS no matter which vendor's router you try to configure the 2Wire to work with. Sorry!

  • Is it possible to use an Airport Extreme router with AT&T 2Wire modem/router?

My AT&T 2Wire modem/router does not have great range, speed, or compatibility with my Macbook and iMac.  I bought an Apple Airport Extreme to try to remedy my problem, however, I did not realize it was purely a router.  Is it possible to use the 2Wire modem/router as just a pure modem and connect it to the Airport Extreme?  Would it be more beneficial to purchase a new modem that does not have wireless functionality?  I have looked at previous posts but couldn't find any definite answers.  Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks!

The easiest route to take here would be to simply turn off the wireless function on the 2-Wire modem/router and then configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to provide a dual band wireless network.
If the 2-Wire performance shortcomings are the result of other wireless interference issues at your location, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme may not perform any better, wireless wise.  It's not possible to know things like this in advance....more of a case of you won't know until you try.
In theory, it might be possible to configure the 2-Wire product as a simple modem...but I doubt that AT&T would be willing to tell you how to do this or provide support in the event of problems.
It's getting to be hard to find a simple DSL modem these days, and even if you do, it will have to be re-configured as a Bridge to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme, so that complicates things as well.

  • 2Wire and the Latest Airport Extreme Cards

After searching the MacBook and Airport forums, I know a lot of folks out there are experiencing this. I purchased 3 MacBooks, two new White 2.0 GHz C2D and one refurbished 1.83 GHz. I can't get the new ones to log onto the 2Wire network. The refurb has no problems. A 17" PowerBook has no problems.
The software for the refurb and one of the 2 GHz MacBooks are all up to date. Those two were set up in another location and were logged into another home network. I'm getting suspicious about the firmware loaded into the MacBook's AP cards.
The 2.0 GHz MacBook Airport Extreme firmware version is 1.0.27p3. I don't know what the 1.83 GHz firmware version is because that one is far away with its recepient (I'll have to call him and find out). My PowerBook and G5 Airport Extreme cards both use the same version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18).
Does anyone out there know if there are any differences between the Airport firmware loaded in an older MacBook (MA254LL/A or FA254LL/A) and the current ones (MA700LL/A)? If there is, it looks like the the current models are incompatible with 2WIRE wireless networks. Apple, what did you folks tweak between the original MacBooks and the current (late 2006) ones and can we please get an Airport firmware update that either regresses back to that or fixes this issue?

Opus_Maru, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no way for the user to directly affect the version of firmware being used by the AirPort Extreme card or the built in 802.11g wireless capability. The firmware is updated silently and without any notice when an AirPort Software update is applied to the Mac.

  • AT&T 2wire network with Airport Extreme and Airport Express

    Howdy,
I have AT&T DSL with a 2wire 2701hg-b plugged in one room but would like to extend my network to connect my Direct TV in my living room.  Can I somehow connect my Airport Extreme (recently purchased) to the 2wire and use my Airport Express to wirelessly connect the Direct TV in the room?  An additional concern is that my wifi keeps dropping on my Macbook Pro but not on my HP laptop. Any guidance/assistance is greatly appreciated.

Well that's great news. . . I figured it probably just wasn't compatible. Just for the heck of it though, does this tell you anything? (I thought I could post a screenshot but I guess not. Here's the text)

  • AirPort Extreme & 2wire HomePortal 2700HG

Hello all. I just got a brand new 2Wire 2700HG expecting that I could take advantage of its wireless features. I configured the router as per ISP instructions, got hooked in with the ethernet cable and everything worked fine. The problem is that whenever I try connecting with my Airport card, I get sluggish speeds, even worse than if I was on dialup. I've been checking almost every aspect of the 2700HG's wireless connectivity settings and still haven't found any positive results.
I've got an iBook G4 12", the latest revision that Apple let out before the new MacBooks arrived with OS X 10.4.7 (and AirPort Firmware 404.2) - Airport Extreme, Bluetooth, 40gb hd and everything. I even tried making a new location for Airport to grab its own IP address via DHCP and still nothing. Airport is on, of course, and the 2700HG's wireless capabilities are on, too - I even tried connecting with security disabled and nothing, it still goes as sluggish as with WEP/WPA enabled. I've used Airport to connect to some other wireless routers, be them Airport, 2wire, belkin or anything, I dunno what makes the 2700HG different, though.
Here are some settings on the HomePortal that might be helpful:
    Channel: 6 (2437MHz)
    SSID Enabled
Security: WEP-Open 64-bit using default encryption key
    Mode: b/g
    DTM Period: 1s
    Max Conn. Rate: 54Mbps
    Power setting: 10
Any kind of help would be appreciated.
    Regards,

    iBook G4 (Mid 2005)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1GB RAM, external DVD+-RW, external FW 250G

I contacted the folks at 2wire, at my ISP and moved heaven and earth and what I got is zip. Nothing. Nada. My ISP knows absolutely nothing because they absolutely don't deal with Mac (gotta love the Windows buffs), so I browsed over 2wire's support forum to ask for a support ticket. Luckily my doubts were kinda, um... 'resolved' today by the technician at 2wire saying that I've already tried almost every solution possible. Here's what I did
    # Switched over to 802.11g, then over to b, then b/g, then g again
    # Hopped between channels 1 thru 11
    # Changed the modem's power settings from 1 thru 10
    # Permutated security keys (BTW, WEP-Shared does no good)
    # Toggled SSID broadcast ON and OFF
    # Heck, I even tried changing the DHCP address assignment! (you know, to assign 192.168.blah, 172.16.blah, and 10.0.blah)
I'm sure there's no source of interference because I brought my iMac G5 17" from the office, set it up to share the connection via Airport and voilá, flawless wireless connection.
Is the HomePortal 2700HG any good? Not for me. Airport doesn't seem to get along with it - it connects, but transfer rates drop dramatically. Sadly, I don't have a PC with wi-fi to test it, but I can absolutely BET a PC would work with it. I doubt a macbook/pro or whatever Macintosh computer you'd buy would get along with the 2700HG. Unless some kind of savior would come and say: "Hey, Francisco, the 2700HG works wonders on a Mac, at least on x or y model!".
Strangest thing is that I setup a while ago a couple 2wire 1800s (I don't remember the exact number, I just remember they were white with gray-ish front panels, like the ones SBC or even AOL used to distribute in the States) and I could connect to them with my iBook. I guess I'll phone my ISP and ask them to trade my 2700HG for one of the 1800s and have the technician prove that it works with Airport. That would be a good solution
So anyways, I've got posts all over the net waiting for a response on this issue. I guess I'll give it a couple more days till I call it quits and ask my ISP for a trade-off.
Cheers, and be on the lookout. Miracles happen sometimes

  • I have ATT internet service at home and a 2Wire device.  I want to switch to an airport extreme 5th generation and I am having difficulty.  Looking for help.

I have ATT internet sevice at home and a 2Wire device.  I want to switch to an 5th generation Airport Extreme and I am having difficulty.  Any suggestions?

Yes, Bridge Mode is the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme when it is connected to another gateway, or modem/router.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "create a wireless network" on the AirPort Extreme. The application should suggest Bridge Mode as the connection option during the setup.
Once you have the AirPort Extreme setup and providing a wireless network, if you don't really need the wireless network that the 2Wire is providing, it would be good idea to turn it off....since having two wireless networks in close proximity can introduce some interference issues.

With sbcgobal I got a Gateway 2wire modem. What I would like to know is how do I set up my APE as remote?
Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this as few non-AirPort routers will work with AirPorts in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
