Airport Extreme WiFi/Ethernet only works one at a time after reboots
I trying to trouble shoot my A1034 Airport (v5.7) router which is having some major problems. I'm hoping someone has seen this:
1. I can setup the router and connect to my Cable modem then connect with my PB wirelesly, but my PC connected via ethernet can not connect to the internet. The same goes vice-versa, if I reboot everything I can connect the PC to the internet but now wifi does not work. Note everything is using DHCP.
2. Rebooting the modem and the router is required to get connected to anything.
3. Print serving is now non-existent for either matching. The PC's version of Bonjour is up to date but the PB can not even print to a printer that is connected to the router.
I've set up plenty of Airports but this thing just does not want to work. The wierd thing is it had been working perfect since I bought it in November.
Any thoughts would be helpful!

Windows Update on VMs seems to only work one at a time
I have a handful of Win 2012 R2 VMs (running on ESXi) I've inherited. I've tried 3 or 4 times to update them now since taking them
over, and noticed the strangest thing - only one of them will download updates at a time. If I start the update on all of them, the others will just hang at 0%. A little while after one finishes, another one will finally start to download. I'm completely stumped
as to why/how this could be happening. Is this even possible, or just an incredibly strange coincidence? Is there anything I can check to prove one way or the other? I'm wondering if it's something odd like they were all cloned from one base VM in some odd
way such that WU is seeing them as the same server when they try to connect or something... Other computers can connect to WU while this is happening; it's just this little cluster of VMs that were all built together.Hi Allison,
Just addition. Did you check if those problematic VMs can access internet at the same time? For example, can
those VMs browser any webpage successfully at the same time, not just download updates? Meanwhile, please check if there has policies on router ports to limit the number of MAC addresses per port.

System only works on first power up after plugging in graphics card
I have a MSI Lightning R7970 that I purchased new however there's an odd problem with it that the internet does not seem to have answers to. Basically my computer only works for the first time after I plug in my graphics card into my motherboard and it works pretty flawlessly (including gaming for hours) until I shut it down or it goes into sleep mode. After that, the computer cannot power up fully but instead only keeps cycling with the fans turning on 1 second and turning off again. This happens all the time and definitely isn't a seating issue because I've gone through this a lot of times already.
If I take the graphics card out and instead rely on the motherboard onboard graphics, this issue doesn't occur at all. I've pulled out every other component in the system and spent multiple afternoons trying to find another cause but I can't find anything wrong. Everything in the system is new.
So should I RMA the graphics card? Or are there other settings I should check?

I am unable to get Airport Extreme WiFi to work with Windows 8 Sony Laptop
My Airport Extreme WiFi works with my Mac Book Pro, iphones, ipad and DVR's, but will not work WiFi with my Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 8. Although it does work with the laptop using a ethernet cable. Has anyone else had this issue and can you please tell me how to resolve the problem?
Windows can have issues with the wireless name.
Make sure the name conforms to windows standard.
Short, 2-20 characters
No spaces,
Pure alphanumeric.
eg AEwifi is a good wireless name.
Fred Blog's Airport Extreme Wireless87AD34 is a really bad name.
Test also by removing the security and just see if you can connect if the short name doesn't help.
WPA2 Personal is really the only security worthy of the name and the password should be mix of upper and lower case plus numbers.. keep it pure alphanumeric also.
Set fixed wireless channels at least for 2.4ghz may help, depending on your location geo standards wise.
Test 11, 6, 1 in that order. With no security briefly. And a short name. (different name on the two bands is also a good idea).
Then wireless is not compatible.. you should download another driver for whatever wireless card the Sony uses.. intel most likely and they have a reputation as lousy. So download latest and a few prior to that as well. -
Airport extreme (gigabit ethernet) b/g not working
I have an airport extreme (gigabit ethernet) that I use as my base in an extended network. I Have always had it in Wireless N mode with b/g compatability. the other day my speeds went from being super fast and happy to less than 1mbps. I went and plugged directly in to the airport via ethernet and got blazing fast speeds again.. I switched my radio mode to n only and wireless speeds were fast again.. switched back to b/g compatible and they are in the toilet.. is it possible for the b/g compatible antenna to just crap out? if so this is very disoncerting as I have several wireless devices in my home that operate on b/g and don't want them to be left out in the cold.
Any input is greatly appreciated.what I did with the b/g testing was I changed the name of the base station to another name so none of the b/g devices that were connecting to it could.. and so it was only the laptop I was using to run the tests.. and still the speeds were terrible.. of course then when I changed it to "n" only mode they were fast again. so I know that my laptop was the only client connected wirelessly or otherwise to the base station when running both tests.
I am extending the network with an airport extreme base station dual band. The solution I have in place currently is to basically swap them. I Have the Dual band running as the main base station in N mode with b/g compatability, and I have the Gigabit ethernet AEBS running as the extender... so far my speeds haven't suffered at all and hopefully it will hold that way. but I still can't understand why the AEBSn would suddenly just stop providing any kind of speed when running as the base in b/g compatibility mode. -
i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

My westel modem (that I rent from my phone provider) quit working with the internet. My airport extreme seems to be working from the dsl (phone) connection through the westel, then through the ethernet cabled to the airport extreme. Do I need the modem? Is the ethernet route less efficent that going throught the internet connection? If I don't need the westel modem; how do I make the dsl conection to the pone port in the wall? Ok, so are you saying that your Internet is or isn't working? Does it work if you plug your computer directly into your computer and bypass the router (make sure you power cycle the modem when you do this)? If it is working this way, then a new modem isn't going to solve a problem with your Internet not working. If it is going slow (try running a speedtest) then you need to call your phone company to have them take a look at why your Internet is slow. If it runs fine this way and then slows back down when you go back through your router there is something else going on. Try unplugging both the modem and the router, let the modem fully sign back in and connect to the Internet, after it gets signed in, plug your router in, and then after it boots up fully, try running the speedtest again...See if that helps any? Sometimes it's just an IP conflict that happens when the dynamic IP that is assigned by your Internet Service Provider changes and the change doesn't flow smoothly.

HT1218 Airport Extreme base station is working, but not visible on network?
My Airport Extreme base station is working: all devices are able to connect to the internet, but Airport Utility shows no connection. Only one computer even shows the device-- greyed out-- saying "Device not Found." The airport utility shows version 6.2; OS X version 10.8.3. How do I update the base station to version 7 if the device can't be found? And how do the devices connect to the internet without "seeing" the device?

If you have not already done so, I suggest that you perform a complete power cycle on the entire network as folllows:
Power off every network device....in any order you want
Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme next, the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up
Check the network again using AirPort Utility
You can also temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to see if a connection is established that way.
If still no luck, try another Mac if you one handy. After that, all that I can suggest is that you perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and configure it again. -
My WiFi & Ethernet connection works but automatic is not working
The settings for my networking have gone kuh fluee (sp???) since I got up and running on my brand new MBP with 10.5.1 (and yes, I've installed all of the updates).
I have 3 locations set up (or I thought they were set up as they worked on my old PB):
WiFi
Ethernet
and then there's AUTOMATIC
Both my WiFi and Ethernet work fine. I want the Mac to understand that if Ethernet is connected, go and use Ethernet; if no Ethernet, then use the WiFi. I thought this would work when the location is switched to AUTOMATIC. AUTOMATIC simply just can't seem to connect. It continues to show all lights green except for the NETWORK light. I restart the modem and router over and over and the Networking thing just keeps telling me to do that again. Ok - what am I NOT getting here. Again, note that both ethernet and WiFi connection as separate locations work; what is NOT working is AUTOMATIC and I want that to work so that the Mac "automatically" detects what is out there for me to connect and if Ethernet, it connects via Ethernet.
Insight? Solutions? Advice???The following is an excerpt from The Peachpit Learning Series for Leopard but I am sure it applies to Tiger and probably Panther as well. I have four computers at home, three with Leopard and one with Tiger. One Tiger machine is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet and my other desktop runs Leopard and also is connected via ether net. My two laptops are connected via Airport.
Open network preferences via System Preferences. You'll see the network window which should list your networks on the left had side of the page in the order of preferences what you might want to do and your individual computer is change that order of preferences to Ethernet first and Airport Second, that way if you are connected via ethernet it will connect that way. If you are not connected via ethernet it will look for the ethernet connection first and not seeing one, it will move on to Airport. You can change the order of preferences by clicking the activity button at the bottom of the window on the left that looks like a little cog wheel and then set service order.
I'm not 100 percent sure but by choosing automatic it either tells the system to do the above automatically when you open your browser or email to it means go to your wireless system of preference.

DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers
I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service. It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers. My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
Internet tab= Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab= Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab= Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch? Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)? -

Yes. If you want your wireless devices to "see" only one wireless network, specify the exact same wireless network name, security and password for the second Extreme.

If you choose to specify different names, and your Network Preferences are configured to not "ask to join new networks" your Mac will automatically switch from one to the other, but it does not do this just because one becomes stronger than the other as you move your MacBook Pro away from one and toward the other. It will switch networks when the wireless signal falls below a threshold that is not user-selectable. It will do that whether or not you specify different wireless network names. -

This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether

Problem connecting switch to Airport Extreme via ethernet
I might not be in the right forum with this question, as it relates to connecting the Airport Extreme in a wired / ethernet configuration. I am okay with the wireless functions. This is the only forum I could find dedicated to Airport issues.
I want to provide Internet via ethernet cable to multiple devices that are 20 feet away from my Airport Extreme. When I connect one of the LAN ports on the Extreme to a NetGear switch, I get no Internet connectivity from any of the other available ports on the switch. I have tested the cables and they are fine, and I do get Internet connectivity if I plug the ethernet cable coming out of one of the LAN ports on the Extreme directly into a device (Bluray player) rather than go through the switch.
My setup is as follows: Modem --> old Netgear FWAG114 wired / wireless router --> AirPort Extreme (wired connection, into the WAN port). My iMac is connected via ethernet to the Extreme, and an HP6500 printer is connected via both ethernet and USB (is that redundant?). I want to connect another available LAN port to the switch on the other side of the room.
A friend suggested that it may be that I need to configure the Extreme to permit multiple IP addresses to be made available through the switch, but I am not tech-savvy enough to understand if that's the issue and, if so, how to accomplish it.

To use the router as DHCP server (the default option), select Use Router as DHCP Serveroption.

Should I elect to have the Netgear use an external DHCP Server and let the AEBSn be the DHCP server? -
USB drive connected to Airport Extreme becomes read-only

I have a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme 802.11n (2nd generation, firmware v7.6). To access the drive, I've set secure shared disks to "with accounts" then defined a user account with read/write access. I connect to this drive using two Windows 7 SP1 64-bit computers.
Reading and writing to the disk is fine. However, after a day or so, I can read from but cannot write to the disk! I then have to restart the USB drive to write to it again. This has been happening for a while.
Also connected to the Airport Extreme (using Ethernet) is a Lacie NAS drive (which runs a cut-down version of Linux). This works fine: I've never had any problems with it! It too is password protected.

PrafulTried what you suggested last night - no change. What is odd, though, is that I can create a new folder on the external USB HDD (through the Hub) and copy a file into it. While I can then close Finder, re-open and see the Folder and file I copied, I still can't see all the data that is currently stored on the drive...Is this a delete and re-copy scenario?
