Airport Extreme will not reset

I have bought a used Airport Extreme Base Station (no model name on the unit). It has the former users network settings and passwords.
It will not perform a hard reset (press reset button while powering on). Still shows old network name, and ask for a password.
I have an iMac 27 running Yosemite with latest updates.
Please help!

OK, thanks for the information.
Before we go too far here with things, you should be aware that the AirPort Extreme is at least 3 years old and as much as 5 years depending on when it was manufactured.
The life of an AirPort router is on average, about 3 years. Some last longer, some don't.
The fact that the AirPort will not reset when you try a Hard Reset is not encouraging.
Try a Factory Default Reset to see if that will return things back to where they need to be:
Power off the AirPort Extreme
Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
If the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, it is now reset back to factory fresh settings.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the AirPort will still not reset correctly, then you have a defective AirPort Extreme that should be returned for a refund.

  • My airport extreme will not connect to the Internet

My airport extreme will not connect to my toshiba router. I connected it to my office internet this morning but when I hooked it up at home it simply will not connect. I have tried resetting all the settings and have had no luck. It did work once upon a time. I currently have my airport express hooked up so I know there is connectivity.

I could never figure it out after trying everything I could and going to the genius bar I ended up just purchasing another extreme.  The really funny thing is that I can set up a network between the two and it works fine.  I am using it at work now with out any problems so I guess there is really no loss :-?

  • My new AirPort Extreme will not turn on anymore, no lights when plugged in.

My new AirPort Extreme will not turn on anymore, no lights when plugged in.  I just bought it a few days ago. It has been working fine. I left the house for most the day and when returning home it would turn back on. I have tried to plug it into other outlets...nothing, I've tried the reset button...Nothing.

That is reported here a few times.. just take it straight back to apple or place of purchase for immediate exchange.

  • Airport Extreme will not show USB drive installed Solved!

Airport Extreme will not show USB drive installed Solved... At least for me!
Here's what I had to do to make it work with the newest 7.3.1 firmware.
Ready for this? No Joke Really!
    1. Connect your USB drive to the Airport Extreme.
    2. Turn it on.
    3. Open the Airport Utility.
    4. Go to Manual Setup.
    5. Choose Disks and File Sharing.
Yep, we are going to set file sharing before we even see the disk we want to share!
You (I) had to set File Sharing on and Share Disks over Ethernet checked as well as set the Work Group (In my case). THEN restart the Airport Extreme.
After it re-started... My USB Drive was now present and ready for use.
I also dis-allowed Guest access. I re-started ALL computers in my network, both Windows and MAC. The USB drive held and works GREAT!
I know... Most of you thought this was a joke, It's not!
I tried everything to get the USB drive to work and failed every time just like most other people. Doing it this way worked like a charm.
    Go Figure huh!
Hope this helps someone with this issue.

  • Airport Express Will Not Reset or Join WDS Network

I have an Airport Extreme which is a WDS main. The Express will not join the network. I reset the Extreme, set up the network again, and did a hard reset of the Express. Airport Utility will not see the Express either from my iMac or MB Pro regardless of whether I connect directly through Ethernet, or wirelessly. The Express flashes amber. I've read the proposed solutions given to others with the same problems, but nothing works for me.
I know I'm doing something incorrectly, but can't figure out what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    A couple of suggestions:
    1. do a factory default reset of the Airport Express. Follow the instructions to the letter, which means don't let go of the reset button until you see the four green flashes in a row. This can take a bit longer than Apple's article suggests - up to 10-15 seconds.
    2. when setting up the WDS (and I suggest you do this all wirelessly) make sure the Mac, the Airport Extreme, and the Airport Express are all in the same room. I suggest you use the iMac - MacBook Pros seem to have their own share of wireless network problems.

  • Airport Extreme will not secure wi-fi signal

I just had my AT&T DSL service activated, and I am trying to secure the wi-fi network using Airport Utility 6.2. My Airport Extreme is broadcasting the unsecured signal but I am completely unable to secure it.
Modem and router are hooked up correctly. I have to configure the base station for the unsecured signal to begin broadcasting. If I cancel the configure, the signal goes away completely.
So I configure the base station again, and I'm presented with a screen that reads "This Airport Extreme will create a network" and am presented with four fields: Network Name, Base Station Name, Password and Verify.
I enter a password and verify it, and am then given a screen to "Provide my PPPoE information I received from my ISP." I do that, and it spins for about a minute and says I am connected to the network I created. Except there is no wifi signal and no connection.
It has been like this for four days now. I am at my wit's end. ATT insists that the problem is not on their end. Any help anyone can give is appreciated. Thanks.

So to be clear - you have a DSL modem from AT&T, and want your Airport Extreme to broadcast this signal as well as route it?
You say you hooked up the modem and router correctly, are you able to get connection when plugging into the LAN port on the Airport Extreme?

  • Resetting airport extreme - will not restart

I have an airport express which i have bee using to extend the network for my airport extreme.  I added a security password and cannot get the express recognized under the airport utility.  I have done hard and factory resets and followed directions to add the express with the password - everything works fine until i update and get the message that the devices are restarting.  I get a message stating the Express setting have been successfully updated and Aiport Express will restart, however after a few minutes i get this message:
AirPort Utility was unable to find your AirPort wireless device after restarting. - It says to try again but the express cannot be found unless i reset it.
this is the link to the directions I have been following - have tried hard, factory resets with and without ethernet cable:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2125180?start=0&tstart=0
Any help on how to fix would be appreciated
    Thanks

There were incorrect settings which caused this problem. Did a hard reset of airport and then re did the setup.

  • New AirPort Extreme will not connect to internet

Purchased AirPort Extreme to replace older D Link 655 router. All of my Apple gear has been plug and play except this
Extreme router.  I cannot get an internet connection to save my soul.  I tried connecting thru both my MacBook Pro and my HP Pavilion dv6.  I just assumed I could move the ethernet cord from the DIR-655 to the AirPort and all would be fine.  Not so.  I have reset, unplugged and restarted so many times I lost count.  Nothing works.  What am I doing wrong.  I even swapped out at store where I bought thinking I had defective router.  any ideas?  My wife works from home and I really need a better router with greater reach and thought this was it.  Please help.

Simply restarting the modem will not always allow it to reset correctly so that it will issue a new valid IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
Power off the cable modem completely for at least 30 minutes....longer will not hurt. Be sure to unplug the power cord from the back of the modem or unplug the power cord at the AC wall jack. If the modem has an easily accessible battery, pull the battery.
Power off the AirPort Extreme as well.
After the modem power down period, insure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. Reinstall the modem battery if it was installed previously.
Power up the modem and let it run for 10 minutes by itself.
Then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a few minutes. Check to see if the Internet connection is working correctly now.

  • New AirPort Extreme will not Connect to iPhone 5

I just upgraded my old AirPort to an AirPort Extreme.  Everything seems to be working fine, except my iPhone 5 will not connect to the new Airport.  When it is selected as the new wifi option, the connection wheel just spins and spins and it will not connect to the wifi.

Reset the airport to factory and start over.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
In the new setup, keep all names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg AEgen6 for base station name.
Since you have issues with wireless name the bands differently.. AE24ghz and AE5ghz
Set no security to begin with.. Set 2.4ghz to channel 11, 6, 1 in that order.
Once the iphone connects.. please set WPA2 Personal security with a pure alphanumeric password of 10-20 characters.

  • Airport Extreme will not connect to Internet

Just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to upgrade old Netgear router.  Netgear was working perfect with both wired and wireless internet.  My ISP is a rural internet high-speed wireless company.  It is not DSL/Cable or Satellite, requires an antenna on a tower, can try to find out more details if it helps. Previous settings were referenced on the old router and DHCP is used to identify what is static IP provided by company.
After several attempts at installing AEBS: green light is on, wireless network is successfully created, but internet cannot be accessed in either wired or wireless mode on any device.  Interestingly, the IP address that the AEBS uses DHCP to find is DIFFERENT from the IP address found by the old router.  I have tried several different configurations of the manual setup, including manually entering the IP address, but when I try this, it also asks for a router address and nothing I put in seems to satisfy the utility's requirements.
I played with so many settings and restarted my computer so many times that each time I try things, I reset the AEBS to default and start from scratch.  I've done this about 10 times.
I'm at a loss.  ISP wants nothing to do with this because the old router works, I would like to use the apple product (with some express(es) to extend range), but I'm unable to get this to function.
    Any help would be appreciated.
I am not running a Mac desktop, if it matters.  Using the airport utility for windows on home-built PC.  No device will work, however, having tried wifi on iPhone, iPad, Laptop and other desktop.

I hope this helps. I don't own an Airport Extreme but an Airport Express and here is what I did:
Perform a Factory Reset, by disconnecting the AE, once unplugged proceed to push the Reset Button and then, without releasing the button, plug it again to the power source and wait a few secs till the lighs begin to blink. Now you can release the Reset Button.
After that, the Airport Utility should detect it. Here is what you have to do. As you want to use it as Router, you have to:
    1.- Click on: Manual Setup
2.- Fill your data for the Airport Extreme, like password to access it and the name of the base station
3.- On the Wireless tab, select Create Wireless Network and allow the security on it and key to access it and all the wireless variables you want to include.
4.- Allow Wireless and Ethernet clients to be able to connect and make an updation of your configuration
Note:  If you are going to use multiple clients for wireless, then you have to go to the Internet button at the top of Airport Utility and select DHCP to distribute the IPs manually.
That should be all from Airport Utility. The other side you have to check is your Windows configuration.
I hope this helps. If not, please share more details after you try step by step the instructions I pasted here.

  • Airport Extreme will not allow me to access settings

I have an Airport Extreme (the new one with 801n) and wanted to add an USB hard drive to it. The system did not recognize the external drive. I tried to access the router settings using the airport software on my MacBook Pro. The software recognizes the router but will not access the settings. I get an error that the settings cannot be accessed. I then did a soft resst with no luck. I finally did a hard reset and I still cannot access the router settings. I tried with an Ethernet cable direct, no luck. I can still access the internet through the router but that is it. The router has the latest firmware 7.1.1 don’t know what to do next.

When changing ISPs (or networking equipment) it's always a good idea to start from "scratch" in configuring your equipment.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

  • Airport extreme will not boot with USB hard disk plugged in.

    Hi there,
I'm using the Airport Extreme Base Station, and I find that if I have a USB hard disk plugged into it, it will not boot up, it only hang-ups with an amber light, and stays there indefinitely.  It's not a terrible issue because it can be overcome by unplugging the disk then rebooting, but it's irritating, especially when I'm not home and there is a power temporary outage and my wife can no longer access the internet or I can no longer access my disks over the internet.
Is there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Marc

I'm going to have to replace the unit, as I'm unable to turn off DHCP services, which is wreaking havoc on my server based environment.
Considering THIS issue *AND* the major DHCP show stopper, frankly, I'm debating etiher the fire pit or tossing the damned thing into the intersection and watching it be reduced to the trash that it is.
Either way, there'll be 7 feet of pack ice in **** before I buy another Apple networking product.
I'll decide later, with a jaundiced eye, regarding our XServe unit. Might reformat it to Linux...

  • Airport extreme will not fix problems or allow manual settings

So I have a recently purchased airport extreme and the dreaded "flashing amber light" problem, but I can't find a solution that works. When I open my airport utility it says it has found an airport extreme that is experiencing problems, and then gives all the specs of my airport extreme (e.g. name, ip address, etc.) and says it is reporting problems.
It then instructs me to press the continue button to resolve the problems. However, when I do that (or attempt to open the manual settings), it thinks and thinks and thinks while reading the configuration and then finally tells me that an error occurred while reading my configuration and I should make sure the airport is properly plugged in and in range of my computer, though it's plugged in properly and sitting immediately next to the computer.
I would also note that the internet works fine on my desktop (being run through the airport to my mac), but just will not work on the danged airport.
Any idea of what I can do now?

It opens up a new window, but still gives me the exact same error message about not being plugged in or in range, though it is both of those

  • Airport Extreme will not auto connect after poewr out with USB Hub!

    Hi all,
I have just purchased the Airport Extreme and have it connected to my ADSL router. All works fine but if the airport looses power (as the household power went off momentarily today) then once it powers back up it will not connect to the internet unless I unplug the USB hub connected to it first.
    Anyone with similar experiences?

    No
Your issue may have something to do with your ADSL router and/or ISP carrier when you have power interruption.
I would contact Apple to take advantage of your free 90 days of tech support by phone since your product is "new." Let them tell you what the problem is.
