AirPort Extreme & Windows 8.0 compatability?

My Netgear wireless router just died and am researching an alternative for our household which includes 2 newer work related Dell laptops running Windows 8.0 and my 2 year old MacBook Pro and IPad 2. It seems most ever wireless router offered, whether an inexpensive throw away to high end ac products all have about 1/4 a1/3 of the reviews insisting they are garbage that doesn't even reliably stay connected to the internet let alone walk  on water as claimed.
Reviews of AirportExtreme claim reliable connection and ease of installation, both important. Forums, albeit several years old, claimed that the router shipped with channel 13 as default setting and that connecting to Windows clients was very difficult and many would not stay connected or had to be reset every time the windows machines hibernated or were shutdown. Are there persisting compatibility issues with Dells running Windows 8.0 or have they been addressed? Does one still need to change the channel to other than 13 to have it work stateside? Thanks for your help.

Hello borzo. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I suspect the problem is that you have two active DHCP servers operating on your local network. One being the Win2K8 Server and the other is the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). By default, the AEBSn's DHCP server service will be enabled. The only way to disable it would be to reconfigure it as a bridge, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode).

  • Documents stuck in printer queue - Airport Extreme + Windows 7

    Hi There,
I have a HP CP1215 Laserjet hooked up to my Airport Extreme and print to it from a Windows 7 (x64) machine.
Everything works fine in the sense that I can print documents and the quality is great, the problem is that the document remains in the 'printing' status in the windows queue forever more and the printer continues to print copy after copy of the document until I manually delete the job from the queue myself.
I also have a mac that uses the same printer (setup with the foo2hp drivers) which works fine so I'm thinking it must be a network/windows issue.
Any help would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    Oliver

Please read this postthen provide some details.  What printer model? How is the printer connected - USB, wired LAN, Wireless LAN, bluetooth?
Running the diagnostics at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue.

  • Airport Extreme + Windows XP = @*#&%#  Help!

    Hi Guys,
Just bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station (gigabit ethernet, 802.11n). I've got all my macs working with it perfectly in 20 seconds. Got a cisco VPN client working on it through Windows XP.
I have one laptop left, a friend's Dell Inspiron 8200 with a wireless card. As long as I do not protect the wireless network with WEP, WPA WPA2 he can connect just fine. The instant I turn on any type of encryption, Windows can no longer connect.
I know his wireless card supports WPA personal (not WPA2) and WEP, because both those standards worked on our old Linksys router. I have spent hours googling and tweaking settings, but so far have come up empty. Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get XP to work on an encrypted Airport Extreme wireless network?

Make sure this PC has the most up to date drivers installed for the wireless card, and that WinXP Service Pack 2 has been installed. When setting up WPA on the PC, also select (if it is an available option) TKIP encryption.
I suspect the most common reason for not getting WPA working on Windows XP is (a) not having all available updates for WinXP installed and (b) not having the most up to date wireless interface drivers installed. Once those have been checked, getting a PC running WinXP to connect to a WPA protected wireless network is not a problem.

  • Airport Extreme/Windows XP

Airport Extreme is no longer working on the Windows XP laptops on my network. I can connect to the internet with no problem, but it won't recognize the base station. When I try to configure it using "Configure Other" it opens, but as soon as I close the window, it gives me the same message, that there are no base stations nearby. I'm broadcasting the SSID and using WEP protection (it couldn't connect using WPA). It has been working fine for the past several months, so I'm not sure what is causing the problem. I'm unable to print using the network printer now, as Bonjour won't load either.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much.

    I fixed it.
I clicked START > CONTROL PANEL > NETWORK & INTERNET CONNECTIONS > SET UP A WIRELESS NETWORK FOR A HOME OR SMALL OFFICE.
Next, I typed the existing name of the Airport Extreme network into the empty space presented by the wizard and then I clicked through the rest of the steps of the wizard and that is what had -- for whatever mysterious reason -- happened. The name of the network was somehow missing from that wizard! I'll never understand Microsoft Windows.

  • Connecting Printer and HDD to Airport Extreme (windows)

I have gone step by step and the bonjour keeps freezing when I tell it to finish the printer setup. The computer will recognize the printer but will not print. I also tried connecting a usb hdd to the AE and in the utility it shows up but not under my computer. I will say I am pretty dumb when it comes to network drives so a little help would be big!
    Thanks

  • Airport Extreme Disk works great on OSX and Windows XP but no go on Vista

Just bought the Airport Extreme and attached a Seagate 320GB HDD to the USB port (formatted MAC journaled).
Using the Airport Disk Ultility, I can access the NAS drive and read/write files from a 24" iMac and Windows XP PC.
    But on the Vista PC, Airport Disk Ultility recognise there is a drive, but when I try to connect to it and enter the password, I get this error;
    AirPort Disk Agent
Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator.
I have tried setting the share to disk password, base station password and user accounts. All with the same error and only in Vista.
Has anyone managed to get the Airport Disk working in Vista?

  • Airport Extreme: PEAP authentication failure when NAT is enabled

Setup: Airport Extreme firmware 5.6, Windows Admin Utility 5.2
Airport's WAN port connected to an internal network with Windows 2003 IAS RADIUS server; Airport's LAN port disconnected.
Windows XP client (using Microsoft zero-configuration client)
client and server set up to use PEAP authentication
If I set up the Airport in bridge mode (uncheck the "Distribute IP Addresses" box in the Network setup tab), the client can authenticate correctly and can obtain an IP address from a DHCP server on my internal network.
If I check the "Distribute IP Addresses" box, select "Share a single address with DHCP & NAT" and the 192.168.1.1/24 address range, the client can no longer authenticate. I haven't changed anything else on either the Airport or the RADIUS server.
Network traces taken on the wired (WAN) and wireless side of the Airport show that the first few exchanges of the EAP handshake go through fine, but the server's reply to the client's "TLS Hello" message are being blocked by the Airport. Up to that point, I don't see any significant difference between the exchanges with NAT enabled or disabled; it's just that the Airport passes the server's message to the client correctly when NAT is off and blocks it when NAT is on.

  • Airport Extreme and UPS

I was just wondering if someone powered a AE over a UPS (APC for example)? I had huge problems, the AE just could boot and after little time (less than a minute) it's unreachable. I did a reset, reconfigured, no chance. So plugging the power cord to a normal power oulet just got it working as expected... any clues about this???
    Airport Extreme   Windows XP Pro

The UPS is in fact behind a wall in an other room, there's 2m between the UPS and the Airport base and a wall. So I don't think there are any interferences possible. And I don't think that there would be interfrences at 2.4GHz, if there would be interferences caused by the UPS they would be at much lower frequencies.
But anyways that's strange as I read some messages of people using a UPS with their Airport base station...

  • Unable to connect to workplace vpn with airport extreme

I have a 6th generation Airport Extreme and I cannot connect to my work place vpn. In the past I used a Netgear router and it connected perfectly, but I have tried everything that I can think of to get the Airport to connect and it does not. Is it even possible to set it up to connect to a workplace vpn?

    airport extreme, Windows XP
Probably not with this combo, unless you manually forward the ports.
Apple routers do not use upnp used by PC to open ports. Therefore VPN will fail.
There are innumerable vpn so you need to find the specific ports required to be opened and manually do it.
IMHO this is where you are going to find the PC world and the Apple world do not interface very well. It is much easier to use a router.. eg your old Netgear and bridge the AE to do what it does best.. wireless to apple clients.

  • Airport Extreme and UPnP enabling

I am trying to connect my Panasonic IP Camera to the Apple Extreme (using a PC with Window XP Prof installed) but received the following error message regarding UPnP:
"Failed to configure the router's Port Forwarding by UPnP.
The router may not support UPnP function or UPnP function is disabled. Please enable your router's UPnP or configure Port Forwarding manually".
Can someone please tell me how I can enable the UPnP or configure the Port Forwarding using the "Airport Extreme Utility Program"?
For your info, my Airport Extreme firmware has already been upgraded to Version 5.7.
Appreciate if someone can assist please. Thank you.

My apolgy for late response as I was away without internet for quite a while.
Not sure if you or anyone knows: is there a way to enable the Apple Extreme wirless router to update the Dyndns.com database automatically with my dynamic IP address as what the Linksys and Buffalo routers can do? I do not want to leave my PC on or else I would have used the "DDNS Updater" programme instead.
Appreciate if I can get some advice from you or other experts out there on this matter. Thank you.

  • Airport Extreme Compatibility with Windows Vista

I hope someone can help. I installed airport extreme and all my computers (Mac's and pc's on XP) can connect ok to the internet. The new laptop I just bought with Vista will not work. After two hours of tech support from Apple and then Toshiba, I learned that the router works when no security is selected, but when either available security level is selected, the laptop will recognize the router signal but won't connect to the internet. I downloaded the 7.1 Apple update and did a firmware update to the base station. Any ideas about this? It seems as though the security levels in the Apple router are not recognized by Vista. But I don't see an available fix to download.
    Thanks for any help!

One possibility is to locate an older wireless access point and configure it in bridge mode and use it only for 802.11g wireless access to the network by the Vista notebook computer.

  • Windows Vista can't log onto wifi network with Airport Extreme

Several problems with our network. 1. My sister's new Gateway laptop sees the network I set up from my Mac using my airport extreme, but cannot log on to it even when I removed password/encryption - even when I entered 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 in my DNS server fields. 2. the reason I even did the above is because although my Mac (Titanium G4 Powerbook previously running 10.2.8) could get on the network through the airport, I could not get to any site Google related until I read about the DNS entries as a work around. Yes the work around works but what's the real problem/fix? Regarding probem 1., some advice I'd gotten was to update the firmware on my base station as it might be a compatability issue with that and Vista. I begrudgingly upgraded to Tiger 10.4.6 then downloaded the patch to 10.4.10 (where I am now) which did lead me to an upgrade for my airport (5.3 to 5.6 now). Still, Windows cannot get on to the unsecure network!! What the heck do I need to do?!

I hope I may have found how to make the vista machines get to your Time Capsule. On the vista system go to network and sharing center. Then click on status, then you will see a window pop up with wireless network info. Click on Wireless properties and then click the advance tab at the bottom, a box without a check mark needs to be checked which says "connect if not broadcasting". I hope I got that right...try it, it's seemed to help for today at least.

  • Airport extreme on windows 7 or 8

I am really interested in purchasing an Airport Extreme router, but I currently use a Windows XP machine, and I am thinking about upgrading to either Windows 7 or 8.  It seems like the Airport Extreme gets really good reviews for dependability and range.  Someday I would like to transition to Mac computers, and I already have an iPhone, so I was wondering if it is going to be really difficult to get the AE to work on Windows 7 or 8.  Apple doesn't seem to make much mention of Windows compatability, and from what I've read the software for Windows setup is very old and not very pretty.  Any thoughts on this?  Thanks.

use an iOS device to set it up, your windows machine will work fine with it just like any other router

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n connectivity issues with Windows Vista

I recently purchased the 802.11n airport exterme base station and set it up using my MacBook Pro laptop. During the configuration process I set the security to be WEP enabled since there are other computers on my network, one of which has only an 802.11b wifi card, that can only accept WEP security protocol. The set up worked great and I was surfing on the internet with my Mac in no time.
When I go to connect to the 802.11n extreme base station with my Windows Vista desktop PC, I cannot get any type of connection. I re-entered the Network SSID to match that on the AE base station and re-entered the WEP enabled password.
Is there a compatibility issue between the Airport Extreme Base Station and Windows Vista? I realize that the base station works on XP based PCs but not sure why it could not work on a Vista machine. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo

Upon further review I determined the flaw with my earlier attempts to set up the airport exterme base station with my winodws vista desktop pc. I realized that I should not use a WEP key but rather a WPA key since the wireless adpater connected to my desktop is a wireless G enabled adapter that can handles WPA and WPA2 security.
Therefore, no issues with Vista and the airport extreme base station. Works great.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut
