Airport Extreme wired network can't assign IP address, but wireless works

*Problem details:*
We have three computers intermittently on, wired into the ethernet LAN managed by the Airport Extreme.
We have a few more computers that connect to the wireless network managed by the same Airport Extreme.
As far as I know, no fancy settings hijinks have been attempted. I manage the router, and I only plugged the Airport into the cable modem and connected all the wires to the computers. The WiFi setup went a similar way -- I just turned it on and it sorted itself out. This was eight months ago, mind you -- everything has been going quite well up until this weekend.
But! I got home from a trip this weekend to discover that all the machines that connected over the wired network could no longer get a connection to the internet. Any machine connected over the wireless network, however, was working just fine. Indeed, my macbook pros couldn't even see the Airport Extreme when I turned off their WiFi, connected them over Ethernet and opened the Airport Extreme configuration app!
The wired machines complain that they have a self-assigned IP address. Sometimes, after resetting everything, they look like everything's fine for a moment. Like I said, ordinarily my macbook pro does not even recognize the router over the wired network. However, after reverting to factory defaults and restarting the Airport, the laptop did see it (until a few minutes went by and it realized something was wrong).
I figured that renewing my DHCP lease would fix this problem, but it did not. Nor did turning off Passive FTP Mode (PASV) under Proxies in the Network configuration pane.
I have tried resetting the router to factory defaults, power cycling the modem and router in various configurations, etc. but nothing has worked. In addition, I have verified that connecting any machine to the ethernet directly from the modem will work, so the problem is definitely being introduced by the Airport Extreme.
So I guess my question is: what do I have to poke to return everything to normal? I'd like working wired and wireless networks again.
*Some last few details:*
The Airport is running 7.5.2, but downgrading to 7.4.2 produced no tangible difference.
I have an Ubee D3.0 modem. All lights are green and blinky except the DS light, which is solid amber (and it is green when the modem is wired directly to one of my computers -- it's only amber when connected to the Airport).
Some of the machines that can't connect to the wired network are PCs, so it's not just an OSX thing.
My roommate's XBOX 360 can connect to the internet over the wired port. It doesn't have WiFi, so I'm pretty sure there's no way it could be fooling me.

I didn't realize I was posting this in the "Airport for Windows" section. While a Windows computer's connection is a concern, I would much rather get my Macs online and deal with that first. I can't figure out how to move the message myself.

*An update:*
Several days later, this issue seems to have fixed itself. I suspect there may have been Funny Business on my ISP's end (but then again, it's an ISP).

    I upgraded to the 7.6.1 a few weeks ago and recently noticed some oddities,  My guest network clients get an IP in the 10.x.x.x network but can't access the internet, the private network is just fine.  I looked on the airport utility for any advanced wireless options to indicate setting for the guest but I didn't see anything. 
    Is this the desired method of operation?  My private network is using the 192.168 network, do I have to set my GUEST network to the same range in order to get out with it?
    I use a lion server on the network that is also giving out IP via the Lion DHCP Service, is there some other change I need to make to the Airport Extreme to have it forward the Guest network dhcp requests to the Lion Server?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Turns out when I set my DNS server IP for my APE DHCP to my Internal IP on my Lion server, the Airport Extreme is not allowing those guests to talk to my DNS Server so I updated the DNS to be my external/Public IP and now the guest network can do DNS and access all the cool stuff on the internet.

  • I have the airport extreme.  I can print from my mac using wireless.  I set up the bonjour with my mac laptop.  It see's the printer but when I try to print from my laptop it tells me the printer is offline.  Printer is on and prints from mac.  Help!

  • Can't connect via cable, but wireless works.

    iMac, Leopard, iTunes, all current. AppleTV only shows up when I disconnect my ethernet cable. At that point my Airport base station (older version) makes the connection. If I turn Airport off in the OS, still no go. I've tried multiple cables too. I've also tried my Macbook pro.
    I obviously want the wired connection for greater speed and since the ATV is in the room right next to the computer it's no big deal to run a cable. I swear I had this all running correctly under Tiger, but now I'm starting to wonder if it had been wireless all along and I never realized it.
    Help!

    I had the same problem and this worked for me -
    Go to System Preferences/Sharing and enable "Internet Sharing" where it says "Share your connection from" choose Airport and where it says "To computers using" select the ethernet port that you've connected the cable from the ATV to on your computer.
    Go to System Preferences/Security/Firewall and if you've selected the last option "Set access for specific services and applications" add iTunes to the list by clicking the + and navigating to it.

    have you made sure that the network setting in the system preferences is set up to use dhcp? if not i would try changing it so that it shows that it is getting its address by dhcp

    Unfortunately no, since the AirPort Extreme should be configured in Bridge Mode if it is connecting to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
    The Guest Network option cannot be enabled when the AirPort is configured in Bridge Mode.
    Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network cannot be "extended" either by using an Ethernet connection or wireless. It is only available from the Time Capsule "main" wireless router on your network, not any extending devices.

    Just spoke with Cisco about the router.  They said the router is compatible with the E1500.  They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1).  They told me I would have to change it if that was the case.  How would I do that?

    When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
    Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
    I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
    Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

    Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

    Let's see if I can get this straight.
    You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
    Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...

  • This Airport Extreme base station can't connect to iCloud

    I have a Airport Extreme base station (model A1408) running firmware 7.6.4.
    In troubleshooting a Back to My Mac issue, I noticed that the configuration page for the base station had a yellow dot next to my apple id in the "Back to My Mac" section of the "Base Station" tab, with words underneath that say, "This Airport Extreme base station can't connect to iCloud".
    When I delete the id and re-enter it, the dot goes green and no errors are generated (the id/password tokens are accepted). Then, I push "Update", and after the base station comes back, the light is yellow again. (To be clear, the dot next to the apple id is yellow, not the base station status light, which is always green.)
    I'm connected to Xfinity Cable Internet service via a Motorola SB6141.
    Everything iCloud related works for my various iOS and MacOS devices except Back to My Mac.
    Can anyone point me to a solution? I've already been through Apple's troubleshooting and support docs related to Back to My Mac.

    NEVER MIND!
    After reverting to the old LinkSys router, I left the AEBS powered up all night. This morning, I tried once again and the AEBS mysteriously started working with my laptop after reconnecting and power-cycling the cable modem. Go figure!
    Unfortunately, the iMac in another room doesn't seem to be able to join the new network, but I'll close this thread and perhaps open a new one after doing some more trouble-shooting.

  • Slow wifi on Airport Extreme Extended Network

    My network is Time Warner Cable (NYC) wideband cable modem to first generation Time Capsule 80211.n (Speed of wifi is great)
    Then I extend the network on the same floor wirelessly using an 80211.n Airport Extreme access point. (The speed of the wifi is still great)
    When I extend the network a second time to downstairs - using an 80211.n Airport Extreme access point the speed slows down.
    The wireless network remains fast upstairs at the two access points, but internet access at the downstairs access point is very very slow.
    - I have all three boxes updated to the latest firmware 7.6
    - I have cycled the power so the cable modem is on first and then the time capsule and then the other two Airport Extreme access points
    - I have returned the devices to the factory settings and reconfigured from scratch
    - I have set up the Time Capsule to only make an 80211.n network
    - I have used the default channel settings and also tried individual channels to avoid any interverence. It seems like it makes no difference
    - I'm connecting iPads and Mac laptops to the network
    QUESTIONS:
    - Why is the internet speed plumeting only on the downstairs aiprort extreme?
    - The downstairs access point was configured wirelessly and is seen by the upstairs access point. It puts out a full signal, but might it be too far from the original access point to put out fast internet?
    - The airport extremes are first generation. They do have 80211.n but might upgrading them speed up the internet access?

    - Why is the internet speed plumeting only on the downstairs aiprort extreme?
    Think of the 802.11n extended wireless network as a wheel, with the base station being extended at the hub and each of the extending base stations as spokes on that same wheel.
    With the extending AirPort Extreme (downstairs) farther from the hub than the other extending AirPort Extreme, you can expect lower bandwidth to be available as the signal quality of the extended Extreme will be much weaker at the location of the downstairs Extreme.
    - The downstairs access point was configured wirelessly and is seen by the upstairs access point. It puts out a full signal, but might it be too far from the original access point to put out fast internet?
    Correct. However, you may still find that by just making small adjustments to where this extending base station is located, that you may get better bandwidth performance. You can do this by taking SNR measurements with a Mac laptop if you have one available by using the OS X System Profiler utility.
    SNR (in dB) = Signal (in dBm) - Noise (in dBm)

    While your still in the System Profiler, note the value for Transmit Rate.
    These values should be negative numbers. For example, mine currently read: -67 dBm / -95 dBm, with a transmit rate of 27 (Mbps). Plugging in these numbers yield: SNR = -67 - (-95) = 28. My Mac Mini is about four rooms away from my AEBS with about five walls between them. As you can see, the signal is still quite useable ... but the bandwidth is minimal, especially for streaming.
    SNR Guideline
    40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
    You will want to place the downstairs extending Extreme at a location where the SNR is 25+dB.

    Upgrading to the latest generation of AirPort will not affect the Internet speed provided by your ISP. However, the latest generation models do offer better WAN-to-LAN throughput over the earlier generations so theortically, if you use an Internet speed testing program, you should see better results between the test site and your computers.

    Please perform a Factory Default Reset exactly as follows:
    Pull the power plug from the back of the AirPort Extreme (AEBS)
    Wait a minute
    Hold in the reset button first and continue to hold it in for at least 7-8 more seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the AEBS
    Release the reset button after the 7-8 second hold period
    Allow 30-45 seconds for the AEBS to restart
    Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS
    Open AirPort Utility to see if can now see the AEBS
